• 7/3 5:54pm At the Annual Bridging Ceremony, held June 9, 2010, Norfolk Girl Scouts honored 20 Junior Girl Scouts who had earned Girl Scouting's highest award during the past year - The Girl Scout Bronze Award.
Junior Girl Scouts are scouts in grade 4 and 5. The Girl Scout Bronze Award is the highest honor a Junior Girl Scout can earn. It requires her to learn the leadership and planning skills necessary to follow through on a project that will make a positive impact on her community. Prior to completing the Bronze Award project, girls are required to earn two badges related to their project, one of the Girl Scout Signs, and the Junior Aide Award or two additional badges relating to Girl Scouting and leadership. Once they have met these requirements, they can plan and complete their Bronze Award project. Bronze Award projects take about 15 hours from planning to completion and show that the Girl Scout understands and lives by the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Bronze awards are generally earned over a two year period.
The Girl Scout Bronze Award recipients from Troop 73616 are Kaleigh McNamara for her "Stools for the Library" project, and Hannah Bruno, Lauren Chandler, Caitlin Donahue, Taylor Manning, Katie McMahon, Maya Moreschi, Meghan Piller, Corinne Palumbo, Eliza Sheehan, Eleanor Spellman and Caroline Wilkins for creating and carrying out a service project called "People to Pet Food Drive" to benefit the Norfolk Food Pantry and Norfolk Animal Shelter. Their leaders are Janet Chandler, Megan Donahue and Tara Spellman.
The Girl Scout Bronze Award recipients from Troop 73600 are Genny Cohen, Hollyann Edwards, Emily Kuzeja, Jenny Mutch and Emma Powers. The title of their Bronze Award project was "Let's Make A Difference". The girls planned and held a Senior Appreciation Day at the Norfolk Senior Center which included various activities such crafts, games, refreshments, and visiting time. The troop recruited all their family members to help with a Fall Yard Clean-up Day at several homes of Norfolk seniors: they raked leaves, trimmed trees and shrubs, picked up trash, swept driveways and walkways, as well as decorated the yards with pumpkins and flowers. In addition the troop helped to serve breakfast to seniors at their Veterans' Day celebration, and decorated the Senior Center's Christmas trees with many ornaments including some which were handmade by the troop. The girls also collected new toys which were donated to the Salvation Army's Toys For Tots program. The leaders from Troop 73600 are Jennifer Kuzeja, Dawn Cohen and Jane Powers.
The Girl Scout Bronze Award recipients from Troop 73617 are Erin Carter, Emma Lopez and Isabel Ladoulis. Their Bronze Award project was a pre-school reading group for children ages 4-7 held at the Norfolk Public Library back in October of 2009. Each session featured a theme with stories, crafts and other activities. Their leader is Lorna Carter.
