KP Jazz Ensemble a Most Outstanding Band

The King Philip Jazz Ensemble was named one of the Most Outstanding Bands at the University of New Hampshire Clark Terry Jazz Festival Sunday. King Philip was one of four outstanding bands in a group of 18 bands from similar-sized schools.

After the outstanding evaluation, the King Philip students were treated to a concert with legendary jazz players Branford Marsalis, trumpeter Billy Pierce, pianist James Williams and the festival's namesake Clark Terry, a spry 82 years old.

The UNH Festival rating is part of the continuing tradition of top notch performances for the Jazz Ensemble. On March 4, the band won a gold medal at the Southeast District Jazz Festival of the Massachusetts Music Educators Association in Stoughton, where three band members were named Outstanding Performers: trumpeter Mike Butler, drummer Steve Dacko, and pianist Jeff Jacobson.

On February 13, the band performed in exhibition, at the Norwood Jazz Classic, receiving a gold medal level rating overall.
