KP, Norfolk Music Get Medals

KP Chorus, 69KB Local music groups from the King Philip Regional School System and the Norfolk Freeman-Centennial School, placed at or near the top in eight Massachusetts or New England competitions this past week end.

On Friday, at the Massachusetts Instrumental and Choral Conductors Association (MICCA) Concert Festival in Hopkinton, the King Philip North Middle School Eighth Grade Band, conducted by Joshua Wolloff, took a gold medal.

It was the second gold award for the KP North Middle School. It was also the second gold for many Eighth Grade Band students won MICCA gold last year with the Seventh Grade Band, also conducted by Wolloff.

The King Philip Concert Band, a new group of 9th and 10th graders conducted by Peter Tileston, took a silver medal.

The King Philip Symphony Band, performing later on Friday, won a gold MICCA medal, conducted by Tileston. Winning a gold medal rating earned the band its Fifth consecutive bid to play at "Stars at Symphony."

"Stars at Symphony" invites all MICCA gold medallists, including the KP Symphony Band and the KP North Middle School Eighth Grade Band" to perform at Boston's Symphony Hall, this year on Saturday, April 26.

The public is invited to attend "Stars at Symphony" free of charge, and a performance schedule will soon be announced for these talented students.

On Saturday, the King Philip North Middle School Seventh Grade Band, conducted by Wolloff, took a silver medal in the MICCA Concert Festival. The Norfolk Freeman-Centennial School Band, conducted by John Fouracre, took a silver medal in its first ever MICCA Concert Festival.

On the same day, the King Philip Indoor Percussion Ensemble, directed by James Powers, took second place in the Concert Percussion World Class in Salem, Mass., at the New England Scholastic Band Association (NESBA) Indoor Percussion Championships.

On Sunday, the King Philip High School Chorus, directed by Tileston, won a silver medal at the MICCA Choral Festival in Norwood.

"The students were truly outstanding, and they are a joy to work with," said Tileston.

Also on Sunday, the King Philip Indoor Color Guard, directed by Leonard Machado, finished a championship season by taking the World Class Championship at the NESBA competition in Salem, MA, the sixth NESBA Championship since the indoor guard began in 1990.

The KP Guard was also the Winter Guard International (WGI) Scholastic A Champions at the New England Regional WGI competition in February and at the Southern New England Regional WGI competition in March.

The guard is led by seniors Shalyn Simmer, Renee Robinson, Rachel Cardillo, Katie O'Neil and Emily Jaronski.

"It is the culmination of a great spring competitive season for our groups," Tileston said.
