NCL Road Safety Day

After last summer with three fatalities and two life threatening injuries in our small town of Norfolk, we, at the Norfolk Community League felt compelled to do something to help encourage road safety in our community and so Road Safety Day was born.

As President of the Norfolk Community League I would like to invite all residents of Norfolk and our surrounding communities to Road Safety Day which will be held on Saturday, June 9th from 10:00 - 3:00 on the Norfolk Town Hill.

Any parent who has children (from infants in rear facing car seats, to elementary school childen, to children who are just learning to drive), can not afford to have their families miss this important, fun and informative day. It may very well help them prevent a serious injury or loss of life in their own family.

The day will begin with the 5th Annual NCL Charity 5K Run/Walk. Registration is $15. The first one hundred registrants will receive a free Running Safety Vest. There will be the Kids Races (with entry fees from $3-$5). Applications are available at the Norfolk Public Library or you may register that day beginning at 8:30 A.M. Proceeds from this event will replace the worn out Bullet Proof Vests for the Norfolk Police Department. Let's Protect them . . . they protect us.

This free event will feature a Car Seat Inspection Station conducted by R.I. Safe Kids Organization and the National Highway Traffic Safety Authority. Please plan to stop by - remember nine out of ten car seats are installed incorrectly - jeopardizing your child's safety. The event also features many interesting booths and activities including:A Virtual Reality Drunk Driving simulation, Vince & Larry the Crash Test Dummies, an opportunity to dress as a Norfolk Police officer, a presentation by Norfolk Road Safety Cte regarding Sidewalk Expansion, MADD/ SADD information & activities, Icecream, music, and much more.

The HIGHLIGHT of the day for most youngsters will be the Live Performance from 12:30 - 1:30 of Perfection On Wheels - A bicycle stunt team with a very important safety message. We believe that the safety message they have is being delivered at a critical time as we head into the summer months when the number of injuries and fatalities among children rises dramatically. Get a preview of this group at www.perfectiononwheels.com.

In an effort to encourage helmet use among our youngest residents the Norfolk Community League and the Norfolk Police Department will be kicking of the "Ice Cream Cones for Safety Campaign." Children 'caught' playing safely by a Norfolk Police Officer, wearing a helmet when cycling, scootering, or skateboarding will be given a gift certificate for a free Friendly's Ice Cream Cone.

Parents - Please schedule time to stop by. You can't afford not too. Check out the Safety Programming being featured from now until mid-June on NCTV Channel 8. For more information visit www.norfolkcommunityleague.org.

We at the Norfolk Community League hope to see you all on June 9th and wish you safe travel.
