Volunteers Needed

The addition and renovation of the Norfolk Public Library will soon be completed, but before the doors are opened there's still lots of work to be done. Our small staff is unable to complete the necessary tasks alone, and volunteers will be critical to the success of the move. The Friends of the Library is coordinating the effort and creating a list of citizens who can help. The library will be closed for four weeks beginning September 26th. Hopefully we can reopen on the last week of October or the first of November.

During the first week of the move, volunteers will be needed to interfile books arriving from several locations i.e. the temporary library, town hall, storage trailers, and both elementary schools. It's not heavy work, and will include moving books from carts into the correct location on the shelves one at a time. Training will be provided.

During the second, third, and forth weeks of the move, volunteers paired with staff members will be attaching tags into each book, CD, and DVD in the library. We currently have approximately 56,000 items that need to be tagged.

With 24 volunteers per day between the hours of 9:00 am and 8:30 pm, six day per week, working in approximate three-hour shifts (no limit to the number of shifts you can volunteer for!) this project should take three weeks. Children should not be participating in this project, as there will still be some finish work being completed by the contractor. High School students are welcomed and may be able to be of particular service during the difficult hours of 4:00 to 7:00 pm. We will not be working on Fridays or Saturdays after 4:00pm.

Once you're inside the new library you'll be amazed at how bright and functional our new space is. As much as this is very important work, the process should be enjoyable. Please call Mary Jo Gothorpe at 508-384-5965 to offer your services or for any questions or clarification.

Thanks,

Mary Jo Gothorpe
President, Friends of the Norfolk Library
