Cabaret at the Orpheum
The “wunderbar” musical Cabaret by Kande & Ebb, which blended a feverish period of history with the vibrancy of a modern song-and-dance show -- and won all the available prizes and awards when it began its triumphant three-year run in New York in 1966 -- will be presented by Bay Colony Productions at the Orpheum Theatre from August 3 through August 12, 2007. Cabaret is set in Berlin at the beginning of the 1930s, just before the storm and the storm-troopers took over Germany, when a sense of impending doom drove people to a forced and frantic gaiety. As the Nazis begin their rise to power in Germany in the late 1920s, American writer Clifford Bradshaw(Dave DaCosta - Attleboro) visits Berlin. After making a few friends and finding housing, Clifford visits the sleazy Kit Kat Club with there EMCEE (Jeff Mahoney, Walpole, MA)and meets an English singer, Sally Bowles(Aimee Doherty - Walpole). The writer and singer soon fall in love. Meanwhile, Clifford's elderly landlord, Fraulein Schneider(Beth Morell - Randolph), gets engaged to a Jewish greengrocer, Herr Schultz(Steve Dooner - Weymouth) – not an easy decision given the increasing influence of the Nazis. Soon, Clifford discovers that he has been inadvertently helping the Nazis by delivering packages to Paris for a German friend of his, Ernst Ludwig(Bill Stambaugh - Holbrook). Clifford ends up deciding to return to the United States but Sally, after aborting their baby, decides to remain in Berlin.Musical numbers include It Couldn't Please Me More, Willkommen, Cabaret, Don't Tell Mama and Two Ladies.
