Norfolk Residents - We Need You!
Fire Chief William F. Kelley requests your assistance with keeping hydrants clear from snow this winter. He is requesting that residents "Adopt-A-Hydrant" in their neighborhoods, as has been done in the past. With budget constraints and limited manpower, it is impossible to keep all hydrants cleared.
Residents, who are willing and physically able, are requested to accept responsibility for keeping the hydrant nearest them clear of snow. It is extremely helpful for the fire department because it ensures rapid access to a water supply should a fire occur in your neighborhood. The quicker we gain access to water, the surer we are of preserving life safety and property.
Likely wintertime fires can include poorly maintained oil burners, other heating system malfunctions, and chimney fires as well as carelessness with candles and smoking materials. Please make sure that your smoke detectors are in working order and that your house number is affixed to the front of your house.
It is worthy to note that it is against the law to deliberately pile snow in areas that block a hydrant and is punishable by fine.
Fire protection of your property is directly related to the accessibility of your nearest hydrant.
