Help Build NorfolkNet!

Volunteers needed!

How would you like to help build this web page? It's easy, no special computer knowledge needed! We could use help with the following:

General, no-computerese-needed, standing items, both short-term and long-term

  • Content! We can always use contributions from town residents; specific comments or observations about life in general. If you attend town events, or bird-watch, or hear news of interest, you might want to tell others about it - how it went, what you saw.

  • Suggestions! for how to organize the information we already have, and where we should focus more effort.

  • Adopt a page! If you have a town-related topic that you would like to put on-line and maintain, I would be willing to do the actual page maintenance if you do the work of figuring out what to have on the page! (For example, the pets page could use work; or maybe a sub-page only for cats, etc.)

  • Truth-in-advertising! It would be nice to periodically verify that all the links on the various pages still point to valid URLs. Sites change all the time, and pages often get moved.

  • Photos! If you take lots of snaps and like using your scanner, or better, have a nice digital camera, we sure would like some photos every now and then as pictorial illustration of life in Norfolk.

Andras' list, which involves grinding through code or HTML or both:

Worthwhile items, requiring some amount of programming (or at least typing), but that would be useful in the near future:

  • page about town, with photos
  • link to map of Norfolk and area (and state) onto town info
  • town sub-page needs material!
  • op-ed page for essays, analyses, or discussions
  • reorganize this to-do list to be more manageable, ie. to be able to add items, track them, and mark them completed when done
  • reorganize listings to full-width two-column sections
  • fill-in form for adding listings and listing clubs
  • keep a list of all links mentioned on the web page
  • split the archives into volumes, since notes is alreay too large
  • a guest book script! (e-mail post form)

Long-term items, requiring lots of programming or of little actual merit or that would be substantially time-consuming to accomplish:
  • tool / equipment loan club
  • used computer parts swap
  • calendar script (to summarize time/date, calendar, weather on news page?) . . . getting dangerously close to becoming a portal! :-)
  • kids page, cars page, travel page, books page, entertainment page, local outings page (bike trips, parks), question-of-the-week program

Accomplished:

  • RCS checkpoint script! (source control)
  • town sub-page should be renamed just "town" (from townhall)
  • town sub-page needs reorganization: towninfo, towngov, towndocs
  • split the webmaster notes archive into year 1999 and 2000 volumes (and may have to split 2000 itself again)
