  • 9/30 7:56pm To NC - Jane and Paul's Farm is a good place to get wood
    - DN

  • 9/30 6:01pm Our chimney is in need of some tuckpointing, I believe. Does anyone have a recommendation for a good chimney repair person in the area?
    - DF

  • 9/30 5:06pm To JW - I would highly recommend :
    Clark & Reid Executive Movers
    One Dunham Road
    Billerica, MA 01821-5728
    Tel: (800) 358-3600
    Fax: (978) 670-9221
    clarkreid.com
They moved us across country and I cannot say enough about the service. The drivers that picked up our "load" on the west coast were the same drivers that delivered to MA. The drivers kept in touch by cell phone before and after the pick up.

  • 9/30 5:04pm To EF: I am always looking for bedding - old towels, bed pads, sheepskins, sheets, blankets, etc, something soft for the animals to sleep on. I rely on "use and throw out" items because of the risks I take bringing in animals that could potentially be carrying disease. If anyone wishes to drop off items for Animal Control, please do so at the police station between the hours of 8-2 Mon through Fri. Thanks

  • 9/30 4:58pm From Town Hall Notices:

  • 9/30 11:16am To the animal control officer - Do you need any donations, food or other items for the animals you are taking care of? Thank you!
    - EF

  • 9/29 9:17pm Butch Vito said last night, at the Board of Selectmen meeting, which can be viewed on the Norfolk Channel, that the trees must be moved to allow Plows to do their work and so the root system does not destroy the sidewalk as they grow through the years. He further said that the trees will be placed elsewhere in the town center and not gotten rid of.
    - DB

  • 9/29 9:12pm As one who proposed a tree by law over a year ago at a town meeting only to see it fail, I ask your patience while I go thru the obvious necessity to have a degree of co-operation so incidents like the present can be avoided (re Norfolknet.com)
    1. Several copies were handed out when I was manning the Information Station at the town hall since some people were interested in taking care of trees.
    2. Copies of the Tree Management Manual produced by the Town of Lexington was handed out to a few Town Depts in addition since I thought the illustrations were excellent.
Especially apropos is page 13 which states "Tree planting must have a minimum of 25square feet of cutout area. The tree must be set back a minimum of 30 inches from its center to the face of the curb"
Be that as it may I feel that interested persons should review the manual and thereby benefit from the excellent job Lexington has done in making full use of resourceful citizens in establishing an interwoven system of implementation and cooperation to mutual benefits to their Town.
Since there isn't an Information Station any more I plan to leave a copy with Town Administrator Jack Hathaway. Hopes this helps the exchange on the Norfolknet.
Certainly let me know your comments on the contents.

  • 9/29 2:57pm Does anyone know a source where I can get some logs split to use for firewood?
    - RF

    Lost dog, 24K

  • 9/29 12:38pm This guy is trying to find his owners. He was picked up in Norfolk earlier this week. He has a Navaho print collar but no id. He is not microchipped, neutered male, mixed breed. If you are missing him, or you know who owns him, please contact the Norfolk Police Department. If he is not claimed by the end of the ten day period he will be placed for adoption. (508) 528 3232.
    - Hilary N. Penlington, Norfolk Animal Control

  • 9/28 9:56am This morning at roughly 5 am a cat was struck by a car on Lawerence Street by the bridge end near Park Street. This cat is getting basic medical care currently and we need to find the owner. If you are missing a black, short haired female cat roughly 2 - 4 years old, and live in or near this area please contact the animal control officer at the police department 508-528-3232.
    - Hilary N. Penlington, Norfolk Animal Control

  • 9/28 9:22am Maybe they'll transplant the library trees over on Medway Branch, just in time to be cut down for the sidewalks.
    - KB

  • 9/27 10:22pm To Steven McClain, Chairman, Norfolk Planning Board and to Harvey Boulay, Library Trustee:
Question #1. Will trees be removed from the site? Yes or no is fine.
Question #2 If yes to above, who will be removing them and under what authority?
    - LS

  • 9/27 8:41pm The stink bugs are back; I didn't see any last year but have had 2 in my house already. Wonder where they wintered last year. What a September we are having, gloriously warm during the day and not too bad at night. Hope it continues through Oct.
    - JW

  • 9/27 8:39pm Does anyone know of a place we can buy seasoned firewood? Thank you
    - NC

  • 9/27 5:47pm Harvey Boulay, you are a Library Trustee. You should at least make an attempt to get some facts straight before accusing boards in this town of a "culture of control". The Planning Board has made no requests for the removal of any trees and knows nothing about any other departments' request. It is part of the Site Plan and any request for tree removal should go before the Planning Board if it is on the Plan. Ignoring rules and procedures and making statements such as these are what made the Site Plan process of the Library so difficult for everyone involved.
    - Steven McClain, Chairman, Norfolk Planning Board

  • 9/27 1:37pm From Town Hall Notices:
The Norfolk Department of Public Works will be interrupting water service on Standish Road between Boardman Street and the cul-de-sac on

    Thursday, September 29, 2005

Service will be interrupted for approximately one hour beginning at 10 Am. this shutdown is necessary to check the operation of gate valves on the street. Next week new gate valves and water mains will be installed at the intersection of Standish Road and Old Mill Road. We will notify residents concerning this pending work, its nature and the day it will be done.

Residents are urged to draw water for use during this shutdown and advised to check water before washing clothes. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your patience and assistance in this matter.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact the DPW office at 508-528-4990.

    - Wm.

  • 9/27 11:37am Thanks Wm., my thought exactly. Mr. Boulay is also right on: the new library is wonderful and all efforts should be commended. But why not look into Wm.'s question and alternative snow removal? ...Again, it seems a waste.
    - TN

  • 9/26 9:19pm We received a letter with more information about snow blowers; here's the relevant portion:
I've used various older Ariens models ranging from 6-11 HP and will swear by them for reliability, and durability. I recently purchased a heavy 1998 11 HP model with a 36" auger and have determined that the 36" is too wide for the HP. The first pass in 2+ feet of snow requires 1st gear to prevent the engine from bogging down. The 32" wide model with the same HP would probably be the ideal combination for quickly clearing an 8-10 car driveway based on the snow that fell last winter. I think Ariens increased the HP on later 36" models which may have solved the problem.
    - Wm.

  • 9/26 9:11pm To JW - I would highly recommend Olympic Moving Company. Both friends and I have dealt with a gentleman by the name of Mike O'Shaughnessy and have been very pleased with his services. He can be reached at 617-926-5555 or 800-222-4744. Good Luck,
    - PN

  • 9/26 5:13pm To TN about the Library trees. I believe the rumor is true. Apparently there was concern about snow removal if the trees remained, so the Planning Board (which mandated in detail the planting of the site) has agreed that the trees are to be taken out. Yes, we just spent about $2,000 on the trees, plus the labor to put them in. No, we weren't ever notified by the Planning Board or the Public Works Department of this matter--not before or after their decision. Such is the unfortunate "culture of control" in our small town. It's a minor matter that shouldn't cloud over the terrific new library we're about to open, but I'd still rather keep the trees and have a discusison about alternate means of snow removal.
    - Harvey Boulay, Library Trustee

[But... I don't understand. Aren't these the little trees in the strip of dirt between the sidewalk and the curb, the same strip where the lightposts are? Wouldn't the lightposts be just as much in the way? - Wm.]

  • 9/26 2:45pm Can anyone recommend a good moving company especially for long distance moves? Thanks!

  • 9/25 10:31am A sincere thank-you to everyone who came to my yard sale on Boardman St. yesterday. Enjoy your purchases!

  • 9/23 6:01pm Landscaping around the new library is really pretty. But I've heard from someone in town that some of the newly planted trees are going to be removed by the Highway Department. Does anyone know why they might want to take them out? These trees were budgeted and paid for out of the original Library budget. Seems like a shame and a waste...

  • 9/23 5:56pm If anyone is interested in snow plowing I am snow plowing in Norfolk this year. I charge about $30 per driveway and charge just once per storm. If interested call Rob at 508-989-7913.

  • 9/22 7:49pm Here we are again... things change hour by hour!! Whew... Well due to Hurricane Rita, the next semi truck load bound for the Gulf by us, The Citizen Action Team, is being postponed until sometime next week, probably next weekend. We will post another "we need volunteers" email as soon as we have more info. In the meantime, we are still collecting school books/supplies, cleaning/building/roofing supplies and other assorted items. We do need monetary donations and all the assistance you care to share with us. Please mail us at: rubytunes@aol.com if you are interested in participating in our relief effort. Thank you.
    - PRR

  • 9/22 2:08pm Hello from The Citizen Action Team * Real Time Disaster Relief
Volunteers Needed To Load Truck - Sat. or Sun. - Book/School Supplies Drive Now On!
    1. We may (most likely) need strong, able bodied volunteers this coming weekend to assist in loading our 3rd, yes third semi truck bound for the Gulf. (If we don't load this weekend, depending on whether hurricane Rita hits to close to where we are headed, we will move loading date up a week.) We are conducting a school book and school supplies drive right now as I write this email. (The truck will be Mayflower Movers' warehouse, Norwood, MA) Better than the gym... come on out!! Email us to find out what you can do to help! We also need monetary donations for gas money! NOTE: We are not sure yet whether it will be Sat. or Sun., but most likely Sunday, according to the folks donating the 53 foot semi. (Sorry to be up in the air! It all depends on truck delivery time.) Please email to confirm, get directions, more info, etc. ASAP if interested at: rubytunes@aol.com
    2. Let me thank those of you who were so generous with your time, your donations and support with/for our 2nd truck, loaded last Sunday, 9/18. It arrived in Gulfport/Biloxi, MS on Monday night, the next day thanks to the drivers of Teamsters Local 25!!!! The drivers, Rick and Paul from Local 25, called me the next morning and said they'd been greeted with flashlights, cheers and tears as they rolled into the dark, torn and beaten town... a team of 15 volunteers of all ages from California who were sleeping on the floor in sleeping bags inside a church, helped the folks who had lost everything to unload the 53 foot semi! People were hugging the drivers and asking them to thank us! We got there with your help, before the Red Cross, before FEMA!! The town was not forgotten and we all did THAT!!!
What a great town Norfolk is!! Having recently moved from Jamaica Plain where I knew everyone, I am truly overwhelmed by how many people in Norfolk responded to our requests for Hurricane Relief.
    3. To udate you, Re: the animal rescue supplies and items collected at the Transfer Station trailer before 9/18 for the Animal Rescue Effort, spearheaded by wonderful Aislynn, were delivered by us to New Orleans on Tuesday and received with much gratitude. Please continue to bring your animal supplies, new or otherwise to the white trailer past the transfer station. Animal feed is not as necessary now, but clean crates, leashes/collars, clean bedding/towels, flea and tick medications, animal washing products, TOYS!! etc. are excellent. We will continue to collect donations there up to and thru Sat. if that is okay with the Town. Any questions, please email: rodeghie@bc.edu Thank you.

  • 9/22 10:59am Hi KGD, Norfolk has a great club called the Norfolk Community League. Wm, do you have the website? As for toddlers, the Norfolk Recreation Dept has some great programs for little ones. I am also an avid "park mom". We go to Boardman Kid's place every week, it's a great place to meet other moms and is very safe for the kids. Welcome and good luck!!
    - JB

[Yes, norfolkcommunityleague.org, from the Organizations page. - Wm.]

  • 9/22 8:12am Hello! I'm new to town and was wondering if anyone knows if there is a Welcome Wagon or Newcomers organization here. I would also appreciate any information on playgroups for toddlers. Thanks very much!
    - KGD

  • 9/22 8:11am Happy Autumnal Equinox! From tonight until the Vernal Equinox in spring, the axis of earth's revolution will be pointing away from the sun. The tilt will become more and more pronounced as the earth travels in its orbit, resulting in shorter days and longer nights. The shorter daylight hours and shallower angle of the sun will lead to a gradual cooling in the northern hemisphere, resulting in water vapor precipitating out of the atmosphere in solid, crystalline form.

  • 9/21 10:36pm While driving from Millis to Norfolk on Rockwood Road I almost hit a wandering dog. He has a collar on with tags, white with brown spots, maybe a beagle or small hound. He is spending a lot of time in the center of the road and side of the road. This dog almost got hit by my car and two others. People need to keep these types of wandering pets close to home. Just a tip in case anyone knows who the owner is so they can pass the information on that their dog is in danger of beingh hit by a car.
    - ES

  • 9/21 6:30pm DL - I've been a little busy and missed your inquiry on dog shows. What is it you are interested in?
    - JMC

  • 9/21 6:02pm Fore Kicks has decided to create a "Golf Fore Katrina Victims Day" where half of every greens fee purchased will be donated to the American Red Cross. The day selected is Saturday October 1st. During the day we will also have several contests and prizes. Each golfer will be given a free bucket of balls to our indoor driving range. [See the Notice Board for details].
    - BD, Fore Kicks

  • 9/21 5:12pm The legislation for Bill 4242 is signed, and the Interim Board of Public Works is now seeking volunteers to fill the two Board seats vacated earlier this year. These positions do not require specialized training or the like, simply a desire to get involved with the decision making process for your Town. The Board oversees the activities of our Public Works Department including water, highway, solid waste, grounds maintenance and vehicle maintenance. We meet biweekly, and the appointment if for the remaining two plus years of the Board's existence. Interested parties should send a letter stating interest and relevant skills or qualifications to the Mr. Jack Hathaway, Town Administrator for consideration by both the Board of Selectmen and IBPW. Information on the Public Works Department, previous meeting minutes, and other correspondence is found at [town DPW page]. Thanks,
    - Ed Melanson, Chairman, Interim Board of Public Works

  • 9/21 2:35pm I had a 4 hp Toro that I bought used in 1993. That thing would chew through any snow bank. It finally died when it tried to eat a large stick. Now I have the Ariens 8.5.
    - DC

  • 9/21 11:54am Hi PFD, If you get a snow blower spend the money and get an Ariens or Toro. While the cheaper brands work well they won't last like these. I just sold a 1964 Ariens for 200 dollars not a thing wrong with it only that it was a 5HP. I now have an Ariens 8.5hp; while not built as well as the 1964, it will last just as long. Take a ride to Norfolk Power Equipment and check them out.
    - JMD

  • 9/21 11:50am Saw on the Town Clerk's website that the special town meeting last night voted in favor of funds for KP High.
    - Wm.

  • 9/21 9:27am Re: 9/20 4:24pm Okay, I have a snow blower question. We bought an electric start MTD brand, 26" wide 2-stage snowthrower with an 8 HP Tecumseh engine for $679 in 1996. It has been adequate for our average home and driveway. Two-foot snow accumulations required going slow, but 8 HP did the job. There had been only one problem with it: a nut vibrated loose and a bearing for the snow auger was lost. Now I torque all nuts before the snow flies. At this point it needs only a new friction wheel and v-belt. Those two parts tend to degrade the most with time and use; fair wear and tear.

  • 9/21 9:19am PFD: Consumer Reports rated snow blowers in October of 2004. The 2 'Best Buys' were the Yard Man E5KLF 9.5hp ($1100), and the Sears Craftsman 88790 9hp ($950). Two other highly rated blowers were the Toro 828LXE 8hp ($1250) and the Troy Bilt Storm 10030 10hp ($1300). Interestingly, the Craftsman 11hp did poorly.

  • 9/20 4:59pm The Norfolk Area's Runners' Club (NARC) is a newly formed club interested in adding new member to its runners' and walkers' groups. We welcome runners and walkers of all levels from Norfolk and area towns such as Norfolk, Millis, Medway, Medfield, Bellingham, Dover, Wrentham, Walpole, Foxboro, Plainville and Franklin. Anyone interested in running or walking with the club is encouraged to join us on Sunday mornings at 10 am in Norfolk's Dunkin Donuts parking lot.
While some runners' groups can tend to focus on elite runners, NARC will strongly encourage and place an emphasis on beginner adult runners, youth runners, and also walkers. Currently the group will be running and walking from Dunkin Donuts in Norfolk for a 5K fun run and a 1 mile run/walk for beginners and youth. In the future, we plan to add track workouts and longer runs for those so inclined
N.A.R.C. is also looking to add to it's membership, those individuals with coaching and administrative skills. Our club is open to new ideas and suggestions and plans to meet monthly. If you believe that you can help in these areas, we would be glad to have you on board. In addition, we are seeking a webmaster to build and maintain our club website.
Anyone interested in joining the group as a runner, walker, or coach, please contact the Norfolk Area's Runners' Club at kpsoftball@gis.net or call Craig at 508-520-0163.

    snow!

  • 9/20 4:24pm Okay, I have a snow blower question. Looking to buy one for this upcoming winter and need opinions on whether I really need a 10+ hp snow blower? Can I survive a New England winter like last year with an 8-10 hp blower? Any opinions on brands to avoid?
    - PFD

  • 9/20 3:47pm The Federated Church of Norfolk will hold their annual flea market on Saturday October 15th from 9am to 3pm. A "Movie night" basket, a "Gourmet" basket, a "Zoo Day" basket and many many more. Price ranges are varied, but there will be something for everyone, so please, mark the date on your calendars, and come join us !!

  • 9/20 11:54am Have any arrests been made in the break-ins? Any news?
    - JB

  • 9/19 11:17pm Can I just restate: "Thanks to ALL who were involved in this [the Miller St Bridge] project." Butch got a special mention from us because he was our point of contact for information and he unfailingly responded to our frequent requests for updates. I am glad that this forum enabled other parties to receive their share of the kudos and I am sure there were many others un-named who provided invaluable input.
For those of you who would like to come see the infamous bridge, you might like to consider a visit next Saturday... Weather permitting, several residents are planning yard sales and one family is running a clothes exchange (bring us your 'outgrown-but-in-GOOD-condition' clothes, boots, skates, etc. and take what you can use - no cash involved!). Any and all residents on River, Lakeshore, Priscilla, Cresson and surrounding roads are invited to join in the fun by running their own yard sales and/or roadside stands. So... Come fish for some bargains at the 1st Annual River Flea Market, Sat 24th Sept, 9-3pm.
    - SDM, Norfolk Airport Neighborhood Committee (NANC)

  • 9/19 8:07am Mr. Hathaway-Most of us would love to get the inside skinny on what the people we serve are thinking. I'd prioritize a visit to Norfolknet every morning just as I glance at the front page of the Globe. Consider yourself lucky. In my opinion, all town employees should consider it a valuable and free service.
    - MJD

[Disclaimer: Norfolknet publishes all messages from town residents that meet the posting guidelines. The views expressed are those of the authors :-) - Wm.]

  • 9/18 10:59pm Apropos disseminating information on town projects, what happened to the town hall information office?
    - AR

  • 9/18 5:15pm DM - Thanks for the response. You certainly have the right to your opinion, as do I. I responded when you said that our work (Communication) was appalling. I felt it was my responsibility to point out the steps we have taken that would argue your claim that our work is so appalling.
CF - I would be happy to work with the webmaster to create some type of a FAQ or Ask the Administrator section - sounds like it is a win for everyone. What I don't want is to set as an expectation that I am going to continuously read this site - I don't think that would be a good use of time, but I think one of the alternatives will work well for me and you.
More later - going to go watch the PATS, and hopefully the Red Sox will keep their distance from the Yanks.
    - Jack H

  • 9/18 10:08am Mr. Hathaway, would it not be more efficient for a public forum, such as Norfolknet, to answer citizens' questions. That way the volume of individual e-mail or fielding telephone calls could be reduced.
It would also provide the information to "all citizens" versus an individual.
Could the Board of Selectmen designate Norfolknet as a "sanctioned Town forum"? Perhaps that could be an added feature to the official Town of Norfolk website.
    - CF

[It might be enough to post/maintain a list of questions with answers somewhere, we could link to it easily. - Wm.]

  • 9/18 9:31am Jack - Thank you for your response. I understand that the Miller Street bridge project was a state project. That is why I contacted our good Senator for help in this situation. I believe I have every right to offer criticism about the bridge fiasco as I was affected by it every day and my family was put at risk by it every day it remained closed (emergency vehicle response time.) I had contacted your office via telephone with the DPW website suggestion, though I did not speak to you directly. I suggest that maybe instead of taking my grievance personally you learn from my complaint and suggestion... I apologize if my first post offended. It was truly only meant to put the kudos in Senator Brown's corner where I feel it belonged. The town's hands were tied through much of this. I guess there is a fine line between constructive criticism and complaining. The nuances of both may be lost over electronic mail. I was very involved in this community when I first moved to Norfolk. Personal situation has limited my involvement. I intend to resume my prior level of involvement in the future and look forward to working with you.

  • 9/17 10:58pm Hi there. Question: Is there anyone out there feeling kind who owns a large van or, if it is raining, a covered truck, that would be interested in lending a hand and driving to Norwood at 9:30 AM Sunday (9/18) morning? Reason: My husband and I have been collecting donations from Norfolk folks this week for the Katrina Relief Effort and we have approximately 2-1/2 to 3 car loads in our garage. It would be really nice if we did not have to make 3 trips to Norwood in the morning. There will be people at the Mayflower Moving Co. warehouse loading a 48 footer semi truck with donations. (We can always use more able bodies - HINT HINT, but helping us to get the Norfolk donations there would be awesome enough!) The truck will be heading down south to Gulfport as soon as it is loaded. We have to be there no later than 10:00 or 10:15 AM. Please email me at Rubytunes@aol.com if interested. Thank you!

  • 9/17 10:28pm DM - Miller Street Bridge is a State Project. And you're right, the communication has been poor. I received quite a few updates from the State that turned out to be incorrect. Trust me, it was frustrating for Butch and me too. I appreciate the help that Senator Brown and Representative Ross gave to us. They were able to push buttons for us on several occasions when we ran in to stone walls.
I would suggest that rather than complain about it now, you help us learn from this. It would have been a good idea to post information on the web-site, if it had been suggested to me - we would have done it. We did talk about it on every monthly cable show on NCTV, and we did talk about it every 2 weeks at the Board of Selectmen's meetings - which are available on channel 22 as well as on streaming video. We weren't avoiding the issue, and every time we received new information from the State engineers we shared it. Next time you have an idea, send me a note or give me a call - I'd appreciate the help.
Please remember that posting something on this site, doesn't mean a town official is going to read it. Please contact us directly and we will give you all the information we have. Thanks,
    Jack

  • 9/17 10:12pm Medway Branch is being paved with money that the Planning Board required from the Cape Cod Estates Developer. Cape Cod Estates was one of the first developments where the Planning Board allowed, as part of their Sub-Division plan, to have the Developer deposit money into a mitigation account in exchange for building sidewalks on both sides of their sub-division roads. In this case the money was specifically ear-marked for Medway Branch - which would create a sidewalk connection to the center of town from the development.
In more recent years the Planning Board has collected the money from developers when approving new sub-divisions, but not ear-marked it for a specific road. This is a big piece of the sidewalk strategy created by the Road Safety Committee and would have gained a lot of momentum if question #3 had passed last Spring.
I would encourage anyone interested in the prioritization of the installation of sidewalks to contact the Road Safety Committee, or better yet - volunteer to join. The RS committee performs a lot of valuable functions for the Town and they deserve our appreciation. Among their duties they have championed the quest for funding sidewalk construction and I know they have been frustrated by the lack of support. They have done a tremendous amount of work developing plans, cost estimates and presentations for various board meetings and Town Meetings.
As far as the asphalt versus concrete question for Medway Branch, I believe they are asphalt, but the DPW would be able to answer that question for anyone interested.
A final thought - I've seen messages posted here several times where people are frustrated when they don't get an answer. I don't make a regular habit of reading this site, and I suspect few other officials do either - simply because of the time it would take to do so. However, I do answer all the inquiries that come into my office.

  • 9/17 9:56pm Re: "Our thanks to all involved in this project, especially Butch Vito, Dept of Public Works, who has done such a wonderful job of staying in touch and involved with this state project."
Though I'm sure Mr. Vito stayed involved and in touch with this project, I believe the dissemination of information on this project was appalling. Count how many norfolknet posts asked when the bridge will be completed. How difficult would it have been to put recent updates on the DPW website?
A big thanks should go to Senator Scott Brown who I know contributed to the later part of this project being completed expeditiously. It is my opinion that this fiasco would have lingered on without his help and intervention.

  • 9/17 8:42pm Flash!! Update 9/17 The Citizen Action Team * Real Time Disaster Relief
Please Email: Rubytunes@aol.com with any questions. Please Call: 978-266-2778 to let us know if you can assist tomorrow in loading the semi truck at 10:30 AM Sunday morning in Norwood (For address/directions see previous posting at 5:19 PM today. Thanks.)
New Ideas - how to give with more efficiency! We have changed gears. The semi truck leaving tomorrow, this Sunday (which we DO need help loading in Norwood, MA, btw - please see previous posting at 5:19 PM.) will be going to Gulfport, MS instead of Hattiesburg, MS. The folks at the shelter we are in contact with in Hattiesburg have just received two semis full of clothes. So, we have located a shelter that can distribute in Gulfport that does need the donated clothes and assorted items. Things change hour by hour. That is why flexibility is so key. When you are dealing with this huge a national relief effort things change.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Please be advised that if you are going to donate items (including cleaning & hospital supplies) please make sure that they are new, unopened and properly packed with like items and labeled in good, strong boxes. Thank you. Bed linens and towels need to be in good shape. Again, everything needs to be sorted with like items, properly boxed and well labeled. Thank you!
Now, what we need most are monetary donations, because at this point we believe the best way to give aid (after we ship down what we have already collected) is to make arrangements with local gulf stores to "sell" items to us wholesale directly from their stores and have shelters pick lots of items up or let people individually go into the stores to "purchase" the previously paid for items themselves. Then we don't have to spend precious dollars on gas, find trucks, storage and warehousing for donated items. We are working this out now. The least amount of extra expenses, such as paying for gas, etc. that we incur, the more we can really help with what people really need. Any thoughts? Thanks,
    - PRR

  • 9/17 5:21pm I would like to thank Jack Hathaway for setting the record straight for RS and the rest of the conspiracy theorists. Feel free to open up all the cans of worms you want, Jack. NorfolkNet is chock-full of armchair municipal finance strategists, many of whom can't be bothered with pesky litle details like facts. Information is their kryptonite, so keep it coming!

  • 9/17 5:19pm Okay folks... you are all great!! To those of you who have come by and made your generous donations, we thank you!
What we need now!: (Please call 978-266-2778 TODAY to confirm!!!) Able bodies to help load our next semi truck tomorrow at: Mayflower Movers' Warehouse, 249 Oceana Way, Norwood. Go Rt 95 to University Ave, to 675 Canton St. 675 is a long driveway/road with a ton of loading docks to your left. Go all the way past the loading docks and up the hill to your right. Stay to the left of the building and look for us!
WHEN: Sunday 9/18 at 10:30 AM Bring the kids!!! And your cameras or video cameras, it would be nice to be able to document this event... community and volunteer action in action! This is a humbling learning experience for us all.
We also can take donations of these items on Sunday. (only if they are properly sorted, boxed, and labeled): NO MORE CLOTHES EXCEPT WHAT IS LISTED BELOW!!
    - NEW UNDERWEAR. New womens, mens and kids underwear are also still in great need.
    - EMERGENCY CLEANING SUPPLIES. Cases of rubber gloves, bleach and industrial cleaners, surgical masks, scrub brushes, etc etc. They need these brand new and cased to allow for quick distribution to the on-the-ground teams.
    - BED LINENS/TOWELS. No tableclothes or curtains yet.
    - SUITCASES/TRAVEL BAG/TOTES. About 50% of the people are still "mobile" and will be living in shelters for a little while. These folks still need suitcases, duffle bags, travel bags, etc.
    - NO MORE CLOTHES!!!! except new underwear, or new business clothes with tags on them. These folks need to go on interviews and can't afford to dry-clean the donated used clothes yet.
    - HOSPITAL SUPPLIES They are pretty well set for bandaids and basics (from local donations trucks) but they still need things like antiseptic alcohol and creams, larger bandages and latex /non-latex surgical/sterile gloves.
EMAIL: Rubytunes@aol.com for questions or to make monetary donations! We need $'s for fuel to get our trucks down and back. It costs $1,800 per semi truck!! Thank you.

  • 9/17 3:41pm Just a question, are the proposed Medway Branch sidewalks asphalt or concrete? If they are concrete, what's the price difference? If possible, can they be switched to asphalt so as to fund additional sidewalks for King Street? If already asphalt sorry and please correct me. I understand concrete is aesthetically pleasing but I don't believe we should forego safety for beauty.

  • 9/17 2:58pm The Miller St bridge is... Open?!! No official record of this fact yet, but the workers took down all the signs and fencing and we're driving over it!

  • 9/17 11:24am It would be wonderful if we had all kinds of money to spend on sidewalks all over town... but, given what we have now, why are we spending $$ on Medway Branch Road? • 9/17 10:24am Sidewalks I thought Mrs. Bristol paid for the North Street sidewalk so folks could walk from the center to Stony Brook.
In line with Jack Hathaway's comment, more sidewalks could be provided if money was available. The Road Safety Committee worked to come up with a plan to get more sidewalks built, but the sidewalk override question failed.
Regarding the Pond Street section of Route 115 - If you watched the Selectmen and Board of Public Works meetings on NCTV, you would know that the state has just awarded Norfolk a grant to reconstruct Route 115 from the Stony Brook intersection, past the Pond Street complex, out to Routes 1 and 140. So probably in 2007 or 2008 folks will be able to walk, board or bike safely to the Pond Street complex and towards Gillette Stadium.
With enough money, almost anything is possible.

  • 9/17 10:22am Re: 9/16 8:05pm Any recommendations for a furniture repair shop in the area? [...] Suggestions appreciated! - DL A local antique repair shop is in the local Verizon Super Pages: American Antique Restoration & Reconstruction Co., 60 West Wrentham Rd, 401-658-3466. A furniture repair shop is Classic Furniture Services in Franklin, 1-800-834-6016.
If your chairs are worth a lot of money, the less repair the better: no stripping or extensive disassembly or refinishing, and you might consider using a museum-quality repair shop for evaluation and restoration. One such firm is Trefler & Sons, in Newton. URL: [trefler.com] These folks are used by the MFA and their work is very well done.

  • 9/16 11:16pm Hi MW, I'm with you on this sidewalk issue about King Street. Such a country road, no place to walk to school - and how about the new fields on Pond Street (Rte. 115). I see children riding their bikes to the sports field and no sidewalks? Go figure. I reside on Rte 115 and have a sidewalk in front of my home, and do you know why? Many years ago a child on a bike was hit by a car near the Stony Book area, and that's when the town decided to put sidewalks on North Street. Such a sad issue on the town's behalf, what will it take for the town to wake up when a kid on their bike goes to the sports field for roller blading, soccer, or meet with friends, and hit by a vehicle. Another wakeup call for the town.

  • 9/16 12:32pm Here is an information sheet [PDF file here] for the upcoming Special Town Meeting for consideration of the King Philip debt exclusion. This sheet was made available by the King Philip administration on their web-site and was discussed with the Norfolk Board of Selectmen at their meeting on September 15th. I hope that everyone will participate in the Town Meeting on September 20th at the King Philip Junior High School at 7:30 P.M., in the mean time if you watch the rebroadcast of the Selectmen's meeting you will learn some valuable information. The meeting is available on NCTV or can be viewed through streaming video on the Town's website - www.virtualnorfolk.org.
Against my better judgment, I'll open up a can of worms. I'd like to respond to RS 9/13 10:53pm regarding your concerns.
The King Philip override shouldn't be a surprise to anyone who has been paying attention, this has been discussed since early last Spring, at Selectmen Meetings, Advisory Board meetings and most importantly at Town Meeting when we voted the FY06 budget. So your comment "What a joke to you people that voted for the override" leads me to believe you, RS, don't have all of the information and taking a pot shot on the web site is unfair when you haven't bothered to listen to the information we have been providing. Did you attend Town Meeting? Did you attend the budget workshop we held before the election? Did you call my office looking for information? Did you watch any of the Selectmen's meetings when we discussed this at length?
You mention some new found money - I don't know what you are referencing, but maybe I can explain if you give me some background to your question. For now, I'll assume you are talking about "Free Cash". Free cash is the money that is available to the Town at the end of each fiscal year. It represents the sum of prior unspent Free Cash, plus money unspent from expense budgets from the prior year, plus or minus the difference between actual versus estimated revenues. I am perplexed when people are critical of our ability to create Free Cash, because the largest driver is the control of expense budgets. We could spend everything appropriated and have zero Free Cash, but no one wants that. We have and I'm sure we will again need Free Cash in the Spring to cover cost overruns, which this year will likely be in the Snow & Ice Budgets (hopefully we don't have a year like last year) and in the Fuel Accounts - resulting from a spike in prices from Hurricane Katrina. We will be working to mitigate those problems, but I'm warning you now those are the trouble spots for us, as I'm sure there are concerns for your family budgets as well.
As you can likely tell from the tone of my email, I do get frustrated with people making accusations or making assumptions without doing some research. I am very disappointed by the small number of people who contact me with questions or suggestions. There were 3 people at the budget information session we held prior to the override vote, I had 6 people call me with questions leading up to the Town Meeting and Election. Were you one of those people, RS? I wish you would contact me before you take a shot at Town officials.

  • 9/16 10:32am MW-I've said it before and I'll say it again, I have no idea how the town prioritized Medway Branch for sidewalks. It is wide, has a shoulder to walk on in most parts, is not heavily traveled except on Wednesdays and Fridays and does not lead directly to a school to which children walk. Medway Street is much like King, very dangerous. If they wanted to put sidewalks on this side of town, they should have chosen Medway not Medway Branch. It sounds like King Street is as much an issue.

  • 9/16 9:56am Re. sidewalks at KP Middle School... or lack thereof! I'm feeling frustrated over the voters lack of concern for our school children... Many children are forced to walk to KPMS on King street... with NO sidewalks! How can there be no sidewalks in a school zone??
My son was almost hit by a car - not once, but several times. And he is not the only one that has had close calls! The road is winding... and the banks along the side are cliff-like... there is nowhere to go if a car or bus were to skid out of control. My son tells me that he can sometimes feel the cars brush up against his coat in the winter... in an attempt to squeeze by him! Medway Branch road is getting new sidewalks?? I think that King Street is a much more urgent matter! The residents of the area have been asking for sidewalks since the school was opened in the 70's!

  • 9/15 6:57pm Gulf relief update from The Citizens' Action Group * Real-Time Disaster Relief
Okay!! We now have another semi-truck leaving on Sunday from Norwood for the Gulf. The Local 25 Teamsters Union came through!! Bravo and thanks to the teamsters! Any more truckers interested in helping out? We have almost enough to fill another semi and are now collecting school books and school supplies for kids as well as small pieces of furniture and more. No more clothes for now please.
We will be making deliveries in Baton Rouge and/or the Gulfport region by Tues. or Wed. if all goes as planned. Shelter needs change day by day... so we are hanging in there re: exact destination. We need another truck!
BUT most of all, we need financial donations (It all adds up!! Every bit helps!) to pay for the gas. Each trip costs approx. $1,500 per truck to get them down and back. It is 3,000 miles! The truckers are kind enough to let us use their trucks and their time and energy, but we must pay for the gas... so folks... any givers? Please email me at: rubytunes@aol.com re: the quickest way to get donations to us. Please note: Time is of the essence as we have to work within the trucking companies' availability schedules. Thank you very much!!! "Build it and they will come!"
[Our newly formed, politically unaffiliated, independent group, "The Citizen Action Group * Real-Time Disaster Relief" is working like crazy to keep tabs on what under-served "pop-up" shelters need what and where they are, making contact, setting up distribution centers and then finding trucking companies and independent truckers who will drive the supplies down south for us!! We aren't sleeping much these days!]

  • 9/15 3:57pm We live on Myrtle Street, and Monday the 12th a strange young man in his early 20's showed up asking if we were the Marchands - he claimed he was supposed to be giving them a roof estimate. He was clean cut, Caucasian, with dyed blond hair, in a white older model sedan with a young female driver. We told him he was mistaken, and he had the wrong house. He gave us a bad feeling and was acting suspicious. Not even twenty minutes later the Norfolk police showed up, asking about the young man. Apparently he had been stopped prior to him ringing our doorbell. We weren't sure if he was staking out our house or something else strange was going on. Either way, be on the lookout for this individual and suspicious activity in general, given the recent break-ins in the area. Trust your instincts and call the police. We need to let the people responsible for these break-ins know that they are not welcome in our community.
On an additional note, kudos to the Norfolk police department for their promptness, thoroughness and generally pleasant and friendly manner. We have had to call them out to the house previously for suspicious activity, and we have consistently been impressed with their professionalism. Keep up the good work!

  • 9/15 12:10am The addition and renovation of the Norfolk Public Library will soon be completed, but before the doors are opened there's still lots of work to be done. Our small staff is unable to complete the necessary tasks alone, and volunteers will be critical to the success of the move. The Friends of the Library is coordinating the effort and creating a list of citizens who can help. The library will be closed for four weeks beginning September 26th. Hopefully we can reopen on the last week of October or the first of November.
During the first week of the move, volunteers will be needed to interfile books arriving from several locations i.e. the temporary library, town hall, storage trailers, and both elementary schools. It's not heavy work, and will include moving books from carts into the correct location on the shelves one at a time. Training will be provided.
During the second, third, and fourth weeks of the move, volunteers paired with staff members will be attaching tags into each book, CD, and DVD in the library. We currently have approximately 56,000 items that need to be tagged.
With 24 volunteers per day between the hours of 9:00 am and 8:30 pm, six day per week, working in approximate three-hour shifts (no limit to the number of shifts you can volunteer for!) this project should take three weeks. Children should not be participating in this project, as there will still be some finish work being completed by the contractor. High School students are welcomed and may be able to be of particular service during the difficult hours of 4:00 to 7:00 pm. We will not be working on Fridays or Saturdays after 4:00pm.
Once you're inside the new library you'll be amazed at how bright and functional our new space is. As much as this is very important work, the process should be enjoyable. Please call Mary Jo G. at 508-384-5965 to offer your services or for any questions or clarification. Thanks,
    - Mary Jo Gothorpe, President, Friends of the Norfolk Library

  • 9/14 5:11pm Gulf relief update!
Hi there. First, thank you to all of you who have already come by our home and made donations. Our newly formed, politically unaffiliated, independent group, "The Citizen Action Group * Real-Time Disaster Relief" is working like crazy to keep tabs on what under-served "pop-up" shelters need what and where they are, making contact, setting up distribution centers and then finding trucking companies and independent truckers who will drive the supplies down south for us!! I haven't slept much!
We are now on our 4th truck... Local 25 has just offered us two drivers and a 48 footer, leaving either Sunday night or Monday in AM. We need another truck as well by the end of this weekend. Any leads? (BTW, I also have the names of three animal shelters that have been set up that are despereately in need of supplies.) We also need a barn or somewhere secure and dry ASAP where folks here in Norfolk can drop off boxes... sorted, labeled and organized. My husband has been sorting for days... our garage is getting full. Thanks again.
If you are interested in donating money for gas (It costs around $1,500 per semi to get it down and back), or household items, etc.: Please email me at: Rubytunes@aol.com I will send you an updated list by email. The lists change day by day, shelter by shelter. I am being told now that clothes are not as necessary, as folks from all over the country have been cleaning out their closets... I will have an updated list shortly. Think of all the things your hands touch throughout the day... shoes, pens, paper, books, small furniture items, toiletries, etc.. We are encouraging folks to go to outlet stores and purchase new items as well... better for the morale!!! Thank you very much... "build it and they will come!"

I live on River Road and am constantly covered in mosquito bites. I don't let my daughter (toddler) outside for more than a few minutes at a time with lots of bug spray. We could definitely use the help of mosquito spraying. Thanks for your help!!

If you think that Math Tutoring might help your child or if your child struggled through last year and you wonder if it may be time to step in before things get rough again, please consider speaking with me. I will put together an individualized tutoring/study plan based on your child's curriculum and learning style and will work with them to supplement their learning. I enjoy teaching and have experience working with children requiring 1:1 and group assistance for learning. • 9/13 10:53pm I guess we're up for another override, or a transfer in funds - just another game, I guess; please, all remember the override, and I did state to all on the Norfolk web site that they will find money, and I quess they did, big time, as I mentioned during the override. One person said on the Norfolk web site that there was no money to be found - somehow they found some money. What a joke to you people that voted for the override. Please think about the next time, as our tax base gets larger. Our officials should get more Math Classes than our children.

  • 9/13 9:10pm Re: 9/13 9:24am Does anyone know if Norfolk is spraying for mosquitos in light of this EEE presence in the state? Just curious. - TC I asked that question of the "email NCMCP" line at the Norfolk County Mosquito Control Project URL, massnrc.org/ncmp. The answer, from John J. Smith, Director of the Norfolk County Mosquito Control Project, was that they continue to spray the towns in Norfolk County until the temps go below 60's in the a.m., and they will be happy to have a truck come out to our area on Friday, 9/16.
Is there a particular area of town that has a lot of mosquitoes at this time, besides Pondville, which has a large supply? I want to reply to Mr. Smith and mention specific areas of concern besides their usual spray pattern.

  • 9/13 9:09pm We walked over to the new bridge and admired how level it was with the rest of the causeway. The water in the river is low this time of year. I viewed the bridge from the side and noted that the low water level was only a few inches from the bottom of the bridge! When the water rises the causeway and bridge will act like a dam? Higher water levels in the upper swamp may slow flooding downstream? Did the old bridge block the water? Should the new bridge have been built at a higher elevation to allow flooding to easily pass beneath? Will the new bridge cause the upper swamp to fill and flood over the road? We may need those "Road Closed" signs for Winter and Spring. Did anyone hear about an engineering mistake?

For those of you not familiar with Lisa Hull and her work, she has been coming to Norfolk for several years and taking wonderful photos of kids, families, pets, etc. It's also a great way to get that pesky Holiday Card task out of the way. once you get your pictures back from Ms. Hull, you can order your holiday cards through her! Call Mary for more information and times available. This event is sponsored by the Norfolk TPA, who thanks you again for your support.

  • 9/12 10:25am Can anyone recommend someone that does insulation work? Specifically, I'm looking for someone that does blown fiberglass or foam insulation work. After researching companies on Service Magic and Boston BBB none of my emails or calls have led anywhere. Thank you.

Workers on the Miller Street Bridge have said work will be completed by the end of September.
There is definitely an end in sight. A recent visit to the site revealed "2005" engraved in one of the bridge pillars. So, chances are pretty good that the bridge will be done by 11:59PM December 31, 2005.

  • 9/11 11:33pm On MHC's recommendation we stopped at the Jalapeno Taqueria in Walpole Saturday (on the SE corner of 1A and 27, where the ice cream shop used to be). It's a great place! It's small, but outside seating is available, and they make their salsa, guacamole, and even chips in-house. Corn tortillas, rice, beans - the taste was as it should be.
This is a restaurant for those who love hot food. The chile rellenos were spicy, and the guacamole with the rolled tacquitos had jalapenos in it! The tables each had a small bottle of El Yucateca green hot sauce (hotter than Tabasco, without the sour). I hereby second the recommendation; if you like real Mexican food, and especially spicy Mexican food, this is the restaurant to try!

  • 9/11 7:26pm As you know, Hurricane Katrina has devastated the Gulf Coast region. I am calling upon you to consider the pets that have been displaced because of this natural disaster. Many of them have lost their families (over 1,500 dogs and cats are standing at the side of the road waiting for someone to get them), been left in flooded homes, taken to overcrowded shelters, or found swimming along the water-filled roads. As a concerned pet lover, in cooperation with the town Board of Selectmen, the Animal Control Officer and other such town leaders, I am asking that we come together as a community to provide needed relief to the abandoned pets both here (Otis Air Force Base) and in the Gulf.
The immediate needs include: [See announcement for complete list]

    • dog/cat food
    • new/used leashes & collars
    • sheets and towels
    • ...

We will be collecting items for two weeks: September 10 - September 24. The primary drop off facility will be on the DPW grounds across from the Transfer Station. A trailer/truck will be there daily for drop off (M-F) and on Saturday during regular dump hours. [Read on for alternate collection arrangements, delivery sites, etc.]

This centralized source must include a dedicated Internet Web site, a toll-free telephone number, and a postal address. The URL for the dedicated website is: [annualcreditreport.com/cra/]. You can see and print your credit reports now, via the secure website, or call a phone number for mailed copies, or fill out their form, mail it in, and get copies in the mail.

  • 9/11 12:04pm Car salesmen are an odd bunch.
We stopped at the corner car lot in Franklin the other day, just to have a peek. We'd been out looking at a used truck, and were curious whether the dealer had any in stock.
Our arrival stirred up a small flock of staff, who started converging on us. After a moment of turbulence, they settled back down and only one continued walking.
We asked the sales guy who reached us whether they had any used small pickup trucks. This is how the episode played out:
    Salesman: "Yes, F150s, 250s..."

We: "No, small like a Ranger"

    "How about a ZX3?"

    "What's that?"

    "It's a Ford Focus."

    "Uhh... no. Truck."

    "Can you drive a stick?"

"Yes! In fact, I prefer stick over automatic."

    "Great, let me show you..."

He walked us over to the other end of the far lot, where one lone white Ranger was sitting among lots of big trucks. He showed us the console, the extended cab, and asked if we'd like to take it for a test drive. He turned on the engine. When I got behind the wheel to evaluate the driving position and seat, he must have smelled blood. But we did decline the test drive (we were willing to stipulate that it would drive like other Rangers). And this truck sure looked like a recent model year...
    We: "What year is this?"

    Salesman: "2005."

And sure enough, on the far side of the cab was pasted the information sheet that all new cars have. Sticker price over $17K.
"We were really looking for used... do you have any used?"

"What if I can make you a great deal?"

"Oh? How much do the new models go for?"

"You want to know the price?"

    "Uhh, sure."

"Come, let me get that for you."

We proceeded to walk back across the two lots to the office.
    "Name?"
    "Last name?"
    "Address?"
    "Phone number?"

"Phone number? Why do you need the phone number?"

"Umm... just as a record that you came by. We won't call you or anything."

I was in a good mood, so I told him.
"And will you be bringing a trade-in?"

"I don't know if you'd be interested -- I drive an 87 Accord with 277,000 miles. I put 200,000 of them on myself. I love that car!"

    "So no trade-in then?"

He excused himself, walked to the other side of the hall, and was back in a minute or two with the sheet, on which now was written across in bold black marker: "$13,239 2005 Ford Ranger N/T." I figured N/T stood for no trade-in.
"Thank you, but this is really much higher than we were looking to spend. We just started looking, and are not ready to spend for a new vehicle yet."

"Oh... if I could sell you the truck for $6000, would you buy it?"

    "What?"

"Would you pay $6000 for the truck?"

"For $6000 I could drive it a few years and still sell it for $6000, so sure, I'd buy it!"

    "Ok, hang on a minute..."

I didn't understand why he asked such a meaningless question, though later it occurred to me that he could have been gauging my readiness to actually spend money -- whether I was buying or just looking.
He walked back and met us in the middle of the showroom with a new figure:
    "$199 a month! Ford financing."

"For how many months? 60? 72? That's basically the same as before!"

    "Let me go check."

We continued our walk out of the dealership. As he reached the counter near the exit, he exclaimed to the others behind the desk "Well, I tried -- but no go!" Pitched loudly enough to project. For effect, one presumes.
As we got near the door, he approached again, with "84 months." After a moment spent doing mental sums:
"But that's almost the same as paying list!"
This prompted the guy running the figures to chime in and correct,
    "No -- that's interest."
Which gave him the last word, and may have given him a smug competent feeling, but if you're ready to pay cash, it really doesn't matter whether the $4000 extra is paid to the dealership or the finance company -- the total paid is the same either way.
No 'thank you', no 'have a nice day', no 'please stop by again', 'hope to do business with you.' No used truck, either, which is what we wanted. It would have been simpler, and would have saved us both time, had they answered honestly, "Sorry, we don't have any used Rangers a this time." But they had no other customers, and we must have looked like patsies.
They seemed to operate with a limited number of holes. If you have the misfortune of not matching the type of peg they know how to fit (and knowing what you want seems to be enough to distract them), you're out of luck.
An odd bunch indeed. Listening must not be in the job description. Didn't show us what we asked for, tried to sell us something we didn't want, and developed attitude when we didn't buy. Wonder how they stay in business.

  • 9/10 10:42pm As a relative newcomer to Norfolk, I would like to say that I truly appreciate the beauty of this town and feel the cost of keeping it attractive, safe and livable are worth the price.
My husband and I moved to Norfok from a mid-sized town in the Midwest. This town was a disgrace - trashy, stinky and ugly. We paid taxes there that, in relation to the assessment of our house, were MORE than the taxes we are paying in Norfolk. Talk about getting zip for your tax dollars!
So, instead of complaining, you might want to take a drive through other areas of the country to see what other towns of comparable size are like. I wager you will come back to Norfolk with a new appreciation for the hard work our town fathers and mothers do to keep Norfolk a lovely, safe and well-functioning place to live.

  • 9/10 11:51am For my fellow Mexican food lovers, I have found a gem of a restaurant in Walpole Center, Jalapeno Tacqueria. It is by far the best Mexican food I have eaten outside of Mexico and California. They have a small dining room, and take-out, and are open for lunch and dinner. It is fresh, delicious Mexican food at its very best -- no Tex/Mex here! Give it a try; you will be delighted to have found it too.

  • 9/8 7:48pm The following Public Health Advisory was issued by the Dept. of Public Health on September 6, 2005:
Recreational Activities and the Risk of Mosquito- Borne Diseases

September means back-to-school activities, including the resumption of school-related outdoor sports, and while the weather is good, more barbecues and other outdoor recreational activities. However, September is also an active time for mosquito-borne diseases, including West Nile virus (WNV) and eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV) infection. The peak time for transmission of these viruses is in late summer and early fall.

Many of the sports and recreational activities in which students are likely to participate occur during the evening and dusk hours, the time of the day when many kinds of mosquitoes are actively biting. Other mosquitoes feed during daylight hours. Active participation in outdoor sports increases our availability to mosquitoes. Physical exertion and sweating may also change individual attractiveness to mosquitoes and may decrease the time that repellents are effective.

Parents should review with their children the following steps to reduce the chance of infection:

Avoid Outdoor Activity During Peak Mosquito Hours. The hours from dusk to dawn are peak mosquito biting times for many mosquitoes. Take extra care to use repellent and protective clothing during evening and early morning -- or consider avoiding outdoor activities during these times.

Clothing Can Help Reduce Mosquito Bites. When possible, wear long-sleeves, long pants and socks when outdoors during peak mosquito activity time.

Apply Mosquito Repellentwhen you go outdoors. A wide variety of mosquito repellent products are available. The most effective repellents contain DEET (N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide), Picaridin (KBR 3023) or Permethrin. Always follow the instructions on the product label. DEET and Picaridin products can be used directly on skin and on clothing. Permethrin products can be used on clothing but not directly on skin. Oil of lemon eucalyptus has also demonstrated efficacy against mosquito bites, with protection similar to repellents with low concentrations of DEET. Products containing DEET should not be used on children less than 2 months of age and should be used in concentrations of 30% or lower for older children and adults.

Apply only as much repellent as needed. Choose a product that will provide sufficient protection for the amount of time that you will be spending outdoors. Saturation does not increase repellent efficacy. Product labels often indicate the length of time that you can expect protection from a product. Keep repellents away from eyes, nostrils and lips: do not inhale or ingest repellents or get them into the eyes. Avoid applying repellents to portions of children's hands that are likely to have contact with eyes or mouth. Never use repellents on wounds or irritated skin. Wash repellent-treated skin after coming indoors.

This year, some areas of Massachusetts are experiencing significant levels of mosquito-borne disease. Contact your local board of health concerning the latest up-to-date information about the circulation of these viruses, the risk of transmission in your specific area, and the steps you may take to reduce risk of infection (including postponing certain activities).

More information on mosquito-borne diseases, on protecting yourself from bites by mosquitoes and on safe application of mosquito repellents can also be obtained by visiting the MDPH web site on arboviral (mosquito-transmitted) diseases [mass.gov/dph/wnv/wnv1.htm].

It seems to devote a page to each of the surrounding towns but skips Norfolk. I know that this is plenty going on in town that would be newsworthy. • 9/7 3:35pm To RF: Try Bush Pond (Lawrence St, off Park St). I've seen kids pulling decent-sized bass out of there. Although they have changed their policies re fishing over the years, you might want to look into Stony Brook (North & Needham Sts.). There are two ponds, the main one on one side of North St. and a smaller one on the opposite side of North. The last I heard they allow fishing in one but not the other. Check with them at 508-528-3140. On Route 140 in Wrentham I've seen fishermen headed for that body of water between Elysium and Pendleton Roads. Traveling on Rt. 140 from IA you'll see a small unmarked parking area (fishermen love to keep these places closely guarded secrets) on the right side of the road. This time of year there's usually a farm stand going. Park, cross 140, and you'll find a hidden pond there. People also fish at a nearby section of Lake Pearl by following a path on the north side of this abutting pond.
Good Luck and let me know how you make out. Or better yet, invite me to the cookout.

  • 9/6 10:24am Re: To lighten our transportation supply dilemma, how many gallons of oil constitute a barrel? From [UNC units dictionary]:
barrel (bbl or bo) [2] a commercial unit of volume used to measure petroleum. By international agreement a barrel of petroleum equals 42 U. S. gallons, which is about 158.987 liters. The symbol bo (barrel of oil) is used for this unit in the petroleum industry. The petroleum barrel originated in the Pennsylvania oilfields (the first commercial oilfields) in the late nineteenth century. Apparently, 40-gallon barrels were increased to 42 gallons to provide insurance aganst any spillage or underfilling. By coincidence (it seems), this unit is the same size as the traditional tierce, a wine barrel.

  • 9/6 8:52am To JO - A "barrel of oil" is typically 42 gallons. This chart from the British Petroleum Association provides a simplified approximate breakdown of what is made from a single barrel. [Click on the graphic to see it full size - Wm.] Hope this helps.

  • 9/6 8:50am SR: I stand a firm believer in pellet heat. At first I was skeptical, but after I became more educated and learned how to operate and maintain the unit it turned out to be great. I purchased a freestanding Harmon from Kirley Masonry in Mansfield. They were very helpful and the prices competitive. Although the initial outlay for the stove was 1800, I have already made back and saved. My unit heats 2000 square feet, I feed it a bag a day of pellets (right now bags are $4.50 roughly), and it really is an added beauty in a house that never had a fireplace. And the safety was the biggest issue for my situation as well. The newer stoves really have amped up safety features. My house is attached to a working horse barn and I was worried about the safety issue of ash, etc. There are several pellet dealers around that will deliver tons to your doorstep at great prices.
Last year I spent roughly $650.00 to heat my house for the whole season. The year before there were monthly gas bills that compared to my season total! Good Luck!

Other. Excellent article in Globe re fisher cats.

  • 9/5 8:29pm Hi There! With the ridiculous cost of heating oil this winter, my husband and I were thinking of acquiring a pellet stove/insert. Any one out there have one? How much did it cost? How has it worked for you? Thanks,

  • 9/5 2:32pm DS - In regard to the question about Comcast phone service, we did indeed sign up and have had a very bad experience thus far. Our service went up at 2 on Saturday and went down at 5 on Saturday and has been down since. We have spent a lot of time on this beautiful holiday weekend trying to resolve the issue with not very helpful service reps at Comcast. We have been given the run-around and the best they can do apparently is to come back out on Wed, the 7th, to take a look at what they may have done wrong. We will be without a phone for over 4 days and the aggravation and frustration has so far not been worth the $15/month savings we were going to gain by using their service. I hope to have better info and/or feedback once they come on Wednesday. I will keep you posted.

  • 9/5 2:08pm JC: Congratulations to your kids for such a great job! It's heartwarming to see the outpouring of support. My six year old and her friend got inspired the other day by some neighbors who'd raised over $100, and quickly did the same on North Street. They raised $89 selling lemonade and cookies. I was floored by the number of people who stopped just to put in a few dollars, asking for nothing in return. It's a great lesson for our kids. The residents of Norfolk demonstrated a lot of heart. (Now if they would just slow down a little!)

  • 9/4 7:49pm Dear Myrtle St. Residents, I'd like to thank everyone who stopped today and donated to the hurricane relief fund. My kids and I were out there for 6 hours. We earned $112. Thanks to a very few very generous donations of Myrtle St. residents! My husband, kids, and I matched every penny and just just donated $224.00 to the Red Cross. I did think many times why more people didn't stop for a lemonade or just just to throw a few quarters in the donation jar, I guess too many people were just driving too fast. Please, everyone who drives on this very winding road, we do have to pull out of our driveways and have kids. Please slow down! Myrtle St. Family who Cares

  • 9/4 1:42pm On behalf of the three Animal Control Officers who stood out on the corner of 1A and 115 yesterday morning, I would like to thank everyone who donated to the MSPCA Natural Disaster Relief Fund. It was great to see such generosity for all the animals and shelters that are in desperate need due to Hurricane Katrina. We raised $2140.00 over the three hours on the blacktop and 100% percent of the donations will be sent to the MSPCA Natural Disaster Relief Fund. If you'd still like to donate, we will have a can up at Dunkin Donuts until lunch time on Tuesday. We have also had a few very generous donors who have or are planning to pledge 5,10+% of our totals that we collect.
I would also like to thank John Hazeldine who is the ACO for Foxboro and Sue Thibedeau who is the ACO for Wrentham for volunteering all their time and standing out there for this cause and helping collect donations. Along with the thanks, all the media outlets, paper, tv and radio who on short notice helped spread the word of what we were planning. And a thank you to Vital Signs in Millis who not only made our road signs in less than 2 hours but donated them as well. Thank You all again,
    - Hilary N. Penlington, Norfolk Animal Control

  • 9/2 9:44pm JC: School begins for grammar schools [HOD and F/C] on Tuesday and Wednesday for the Middle and High Schools... which begs the question: Why? Am assuming it has something to do with bus scheduling, but have never heard the real reason. Just curious. Oh, and good luck to all the kids next week. There will be some sleepy ones getting on their buses - including mine!

  • 9/2 1:29pm Taken from the Norfolknet Essays: Written in 2001, but still pertinent today.
    Tragedy
9/12 9:31pm Wow, how to come to the realization that the problems we face day to day, ergo, to golf course or not to golf course, to pave, tear down, build up, scrape up, seize up, my neighbors (dog barks, kids yell, radio is too loud etc.) mean NOTHING in the large scheme of things. I sit transfixed, in front of the TV set, watching those terrible pictures over and over again yet unable to turn away, all the while thinking, ``What am I going to do, how is this going to affect me, my kids, my grandkids, my world?'' All of a sudden, I feel very small and very vulnerable and very thankful that I am where I am and not where "they'' are. I am sorry for everyone in this world, it's not supposed to be like this. Everyone that is safe today, take a minute and breathe, tell people how much they mean to you, smile at all you meet, and above all, Love and Laugh together.

  • 9/2 12:01pm We are all feeling helpless at being unable to help and aid those who are affected by the natural disaster down south. Norfolk Animal Control has set up a fund raiser with volunteers from other Animal Control Officers in the area. We will be stationed at the lights at 115 and 1A tomorrow morning (Saturday) starting 10AM looking for donations for the MSPCA Natural Disaster Relief Fund. This fund is used exclusively to aid the animals and shelters that need resources for all areas not limited to animal rescue, veterinary care, shelter assistance, food/water, etc. We are asking for your financial support. If you would like to contribute please come down 115 either direction and make a donation. We will not be on 1A proper due to safety issues. Another way to donate is to stop in at Dunkin Donuts in our town. They have also graciously agreed to let us place a can on their counter tops to collect for this fund as well. No donation is too small or too large. Thank you all!
    Sincerely,
    - Hilary Nolan Penlington, Norfolk Animal Control Officer   (508) 528 3232

  • 9/1 10:03pm To TB: My family and I relocated to Norfolk five years ago from Danbury, Ct. We heard of the town through word of mouth from my husband's boss, who has lived here for many years. We like the feel of small town living with the conveniences not too far away. If you move from a more populated area, as we did, it takes a little getting used to the fact that you need to drive farther to get that Chinese takeout, or whatever.
We are very happy with the quality of schooling that our kids have received, and the resources available to them (we have a 2nd grader and one going into 9th grade). You should be aware that from 7th grade on, the school system is regional, involving three towns, and the class size is in the 400's for each grade. The middle school was recently renovated and looks like a new school, and the high school is in the early stages of renovation.
There are lots of activities for young children through Norfolk Recreation, and many sports activities also. There are three preschools located in the town.
    Good luck with your move!

  • 8/31 4:19pm We are not residents of Norfolk, although my wife and I are thinking about Norfolk as we plan a soon-to-be relocation with our young children. We currently live in Connecticut and we have heard positive comments about Norfolk, but we know nothing about the area and would be interested in hearing from some of the residents who live there. Is it conducive to raising a young family? Are the schools good? What are some of the good things and some of the bad things about Norfolk? Thank you! Kind Regards,

  • 8/30 9:29pm Has the proximity of the Mann Pond Lateral been studied carefully to make sure there is no effect on the Lateral due to the the addition of 5 houses going in off Standish and exiting near Seekonk? Is an impact review needed, since the landscape has/will be changed. I recall years ago when all residents had to be notified along the Lateral when Hoover Road and the lower end of Old Colony Drive were proposed (and built). Has the Planning Board or the Consevation Comm. addressed this issue, since it is a vital stream?

  • 8/26 8:27am Re: Online telephone service. A friend of mine just introduced me to Skype... an online "telephone" service...
She "called" me this evening on my land line from her computer and it was amazing! There was a bit of a "digital sound", but her voice was very clear. Apparently, you can talk into your computer's microphone or you add an auxillary microphone and talk into it and whomever you are calling, their computer receives your call, either for free from your computer, or for a small charge on their land line telephone. So, that is an option if you make lots of long distance calls including expensive international calls. Just a thought, FYI... Enjoy! Ahhh the modern world... remember to take time to enjoy the tail end of the summer...
    - PRR

  • 8/25 7:08pm JC - We have Vonage which is another cable phone service. It is less expensive; you can choose a limited number of minutes for $14.99 per month or unlimited for $25. We like it although occaisionally the line is crackly and my family complains. I have friends with other cable phone service providers and they have the same complaint, so I guess it's the technology and not the company. It saves us about $60 per month which to me is worth it!

  • 8/24 11:14pm To DS -- I have not signed up for Comcast digital phone service. But they are calling around soliciting customers. If you have both their high-speed internet acess and cable TV, you can add the phone service for $39.99/month (plus taxes) As a promotion.or the first three months, they're offering the service for $26.99/month. This includes unlimited local/long distance calling and some really good calling features. One thing to keep in mind with Comcast, however, is that in the event of an extended power outage, you would not have phone service (or 911 calling for that matter). The Comcast system comes with a battery back-up which is good for 9 hours... beyond that time... no phone service. I guess a power outage greater than 9 hours is rare, but one never knows.... I would be curious to hear from others about the pros and cons of this service.

  • 8/24 4:55pm On behalf of the Department, we wish to extend our sincere thanks to all those who contributed money and enthusiastic support to "help Jerry's kids" during the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) fund raiser on Saturday. Through your efforts, the community donated close to $1,300 to the MDA.
Seven firefighters working at the Main Street round-a-bout for only one and half hours ensured our efforts raised more than our goal of $1,000. It was heartfelt to hear the comments of those who stopped and encouraged the firefighters. For anyone who was inconvenienced, please accept my sincere apologies as the Fire Chief. Finally, to the half dozen residents who stopped to introduce themselves to me, it was great to have met you.
A comical moment during the morning involved a young lady who inquired who was Jerry and his kids. I am sure you would feel as I did, knowing our recognition of Jerry Lewis and the MDA date us to today's youth!
The MDA fund raiser was hosted by the International Association of Firefighters (IAFF), our Local 4134 and Co-Chaired by Lt. Doug Johnston. Those who volunteered their time along with Lt. Johnston included Lt. Mark Kantzer, Firefighter Jim Leary and they were assisted by the on-duty shift, Lt. Jack Kelley and Firefighter/Paramedics Mike Findlen and Russ Hall (who were still responsible for their daily chores at the station). We would like to thank Dunkin Donuts for their support during the morning and again to all those who contributed. THANKS from your Norfolk Firefighters.

I got a letter the next day confirming, and talked to someone there a couple of times. I did have to leave a message once, but got a call back within an hour. I also setup an appointment for cleaning my furnace and got a date in less than a week. They have a great price ($1.99 if you pay within 10 days of delivery) and pretty fast response. I'm happy with them so far.

  • 8/18 9:12am Hi SD - the tentative date for the library opening is around Oct. 24th or the week after, if the remaining parts of the project stay on schedule. The carpeting and bookshelves will be installed in the next few weeks, and the librarians are planning to start moving on Sept. 26th. As anyone who has undertaken a major construction project can attest, these dates aren't set in stone, but everyone on site and at the library is working hard toward these goals. Thank you for your patience! I think you'll agree that the wait was worth it when you see the result.

  • 8/17 8:08pm To JK regarding wireless service, the consensus seems to be that Verizon has the best coverage in the area by far. In addition to my personal Verizon phone, I also have a work phone with Cingular, and it's awful around Norfolk. • 8/16 1:12pm Does anyone know of a Norfolk resident that sells Tupperware? If so, could you please let me know his/her email or phone? Thanks!
    - SB

  • 8/16 12:54pm Does anyone know of a nearby dog boarding facility that also offers doggie daycare? Anywhere from Franklin on west (towards 128) would work for us.
    - JP

  • 8/16 10:28am Our dog Pooka has been found. A great big thank you to Norfolknet, Hilary Penlington and the Norfolk Police Department. Everyone we have spoken to for the last 48 hours could not have been kinder. Hilary went above and beyond the call of duty and is the absolute best at what she does. Thank you all again!

  • 8/15 11:22pm AP, If you want an absolutely amazing restaurant you have to try CAV on Imperial St in Providence RI. Believe me this place has it all fabulous food, a great atmosphere and great jazz music. They have a Web page so you can check them out at www.cavrestaurant.com. This place is wonderful!! Happy Anniversary.

    Pooka, 54K
Our dog has been missing since Saturday night from 1A in Norfolk near Tyler's Restaurant.

She is a black lab with a white blaze on her chest. She is shy and barks at strangers.

Please call the Norfolk Animal Control Officer at the Police Station with any information.

  • 8/15 11:52am Basil's in Medfield is one of the best restaurants I have ever been to - I go there every year for my birthday. It is a bit pricey - $90-$125 for two for dinner, but that included appetizers, dinner, dessert, tip and a ``to go'' box for the next day. Adding wine or other alcoholic beverages would push the price higher. Service is always excellent - very attentive and helpful. They have a butternut squash and caramelized onion soup that is excellent and I would recommend the chocolate lava cake for dessert. Happy Anniversary!

  • 8/15 11:49am In answer to JG: the groomers I have used and would recommend to you is the Village Groomer, Route 1 South, Walpole. Great people, great groomers and very busy!
    - KB

  • 8/15 8:51am HB: Glad to hear the good review on Shakers. My husband and I tried to go there a few weeks ago but it was closed. We ended up at Signatures, which is right around the corner from there on Rt. 152. The food was great and we thought the prices were very reasonable.
Too bad Girard's Bistro is closed. Does anyone know if they re-opened elsewhere?
    - MP

  • 8/14 11:27pm Hi, Can anyone recommend a groomer in the area? Thanks.
    - JG

  • 8/14 11:07pm Upon returning from a weekend trip today we were notified this evening that our beloved 5.5 year old Black Lab mix was missing. She had been missing since Saturday night when she got away from one of the technicians at Whispering Pines in Norfolk, where she was being boarded. She had a purple Black Dog collar with a blue tag with her name and telephone number on it. If you have seen her or if you have any information, please contact Whispering Pines at 508-384-5904.

  • 8/14 6:33pm AP - Last night my husband and I went to "Shakers" - a new piano bar located on Man Mar Drive off Rte 152 in Plainville. It is owned by the same couple who own James' Roadside on 140 in Franklin (also my favorite breakfast place). It was FABULOUS! Check out there website www.shakerspianobar.com. It is a small restaurant and they have live jazz music (which I loved). They have an open kitchen and a very nice atmosphere. I would compare the ambiance and the food quality to that of Boston's South End - although the prices were much more reasonable. Happy Anniversary!
    - HB

  • 8/14 6:32pm ER, I think that restaurant reviews are much appreciated even the bad ones. For those of us who rarely get out, it is nice to know if a place is not top notch. I don't think that HPK said anything to be ashamed about. An honest opinion expressed!
Now, I tried Olio in Canton, the food was decent, very pricey and not particularly charming, I am experiencing no shame whatsoever! I understand that Coriander in Sharon center is excellent, but expensive. How about Basil in Medfield? Not overly fancy but relaxed and the service was great - Good luck!
    - MJD

  • 8/14 6:30pm To HPK: Yes, shame on you! What country do you think you live in anyway? Speaking your mind like that. For shame! You're right ER. After all, my wife and I had a terrible experience at Rossi's and I have kept my negative experience to myself. I also never said a word about speaking to the owner directly. And you would have to twist my arm for me to say I haven't been back there in 5 years and won't be back any time soon.
Some people just can't keep things to themselves.
    - DM

  • 8/14 6:28pm To BF - We also struck out with a large cleaning company in the past... then we found Sonia! She's FANTASTIC--very trustworthy, dependable and thorough. She takes much pride in her work. She was recommended to us by our neighbor who has been using her for years and my neighbor's family have used her for even longer. Here is her info: Sonia - 508-335-9586 Good luck!
    - KM

  • 8/14 6:26pm For HPK... I don't think you needed to share your negative opinion about Zebra's... People spend endless hours building their business and it can take one person writing 4 lines to try to distroy it... Shame on you ... Did you voice your opinion to the owner at the time?
    - ER

  • 8/14 6:25pm Re: 8/12 10:47am To KAM: could you reveal which oil company was able to cap the oil price under $2? We are new in the area... but we were able to get the price of heating oil capped at the price of $1.89 for the next year with HORAN... I'll bet their "special offer" is higher now... this was back in May. Good luck!!
    - PR

  • 8/14 6:24pm We are thinking of finishing our basement and wanted to know if there are any recommendations to contractors who do this work and who have done this in Norfolk?
    - SD

  • 8/13 10:22pm Rossi's in Millis has lovely ambiance (relatively intimate) & generally gets very good reviews from patrons. Lucianos on Rt. 1 in Wrentham has very nice food, but has the feel of a large restaurant (not intimate), which it is. I have had exquisite desserts there (my favorite part of the meal!). Sherborn Inn is just all around lovely - ambiance, food, etc.
Good luck & happy anniversary. I hope you'll let us know where you went, & how it was!
    - SC

  • 8/13 10:21pm I would not go to Zebra's again. It was overpriced, pretentious, and the food didn't seem very fresh to me. I was mystified by the fried onion rings that garnished the lobster ravioli in cream sauce that I had ordered -- talk about a dish not hanging together! Yes, you might have to go into Wellesley or Boston for a truly celebratory meal.
    - HPK

  • 8/13 10:02am AP - Locally Zebras in Medfield is supposed to be nice. A little farther away but still local, on Rt 1 in Norwood is Sky. I'm salivating just thinking about their food. Happy Anninversary!
    - NJD

  • 8/12 11:04pm To: CR... There are several towns in Massachusetts supporting the use of rain barrels and offering discounts on their purchase price. Unfortunately, Norfolk does not have such a program. However, we're fortunate in that there are two companies which manufacture them and, if you don't mind a short drive, they're available for pickup. One is in Peabody and the other is in Hyde Park. Click here for info: greatamericanbarrel.com -OR- nerainbarrel.com I hope this helps...

  • 8/12 11:03pm Does anyone know why the 2 fire hydrants on Rockwood (one at the foot of Fleetqwood, and one near Cliff's Cycles) have orange bags on them saying "Not in Service"? What does this mean in terms of fire safety for nearby residents, & when can they be expected to be in service?
    - SC

  • 8/12 9:27pm AP - If you like Italian, try Sarcinos on Hanover Street in the North End, about halfway down. It's a little expensive but I have never left there feeling cheated. If you go, ask for the "Franks Special" for an appetizer, it's not on the menu so you have to ask for it. It's to die for! Also there's nothing in it that would surprise you like squid or anything. The wine selection is great and the end of the meal... top it off with a Lemoncello.
    - RTG

  • 8/12 4:14pm AP - If money is not an issue, Blue Ginger in Wellesley is my absolute favorite - can still remember my last meal there, and that was 3 years ago! Ming Tsai is the owner/supervising chef - several of his cookbooks are in the library. Kind of American meets Asian fusion. Interested in seeing what other suggestions you get!

  • 8/12 1:52pm To JLH: Two summers ago, my then-5 year old got a very high fever (105) which lasted from the middle of the night til the next evening. This was after a day spent at Sweatt Beach. Another boy we went with also had a high fever that night. A couple of days later they closed the beach for chemical treatment (I think due to goose droppings, but I'm not sure). Although my doctor wouldn't confirm it, I'm absolutely convinced the fever had to do with his day at the pond. I have heard of the same thing with other children too. We live on Kingsbury Pond, and he's never been sick after going in the water here. I think a large part of young kids getting sick after being at a local pond is due to the amount of water they ingest.
    - KT

  • 8/12 1:51pm Both my kids had the high fever virus this summer. Lasted about a week with some ups and downs. Their pediatrician confirmed that there is a virus going around - just fever, no other symptoms.

  • 8/12 1:24pm We are a Norfolk family currently looking for a full time nanny for 4 days per week. Must have transportation. Looking for someone to start the 1st week of September. Please call (508)243-3845 or e-mail to brookeybear@comcast.net Any suggestions would also be greatly appreciated!

    beagle, 40K

  • 8/12 11:50am This dog has been here for 13 days, was unclaimed and needs a home. He's a young adult beagle. He is full of energy and neutered. He needs a home that will spend a lot of time with him learning basic commands. He is very quick to learn and really wants to please. He does great in a kennel run, non bark/bray type. A real cute dog for the right family. If interested please contact the animal control officer at the police department at 508-528-3232. Sincerely,
    - Hilary Penlington, Norfolk Animal Control

  • 8/12 10:47am To KAM: could you reveal which oil company was able to cap the oil price under $2?
    - PAN

  • 8/12 10:46am Re: High fever - I may be totally wrong, but I think it is just a viral bug going around. My grandson, from RI, and another child from Norfolk, had this kind of fever a couple of weeks ago, very high, lasting for 24-36 hours, neither had been swimming at a lake or pond.
    - JW

  • 8/11 10:56pm Last week I received a card from Comcast introducing their phone service and asking me to sign up. Has anyone had any experience with digital cable phone service, and if so, how did you like it? I am thinking of making the switch!
    - AL

  • 8/11 9:58pm Since moving to Norfolk and with the hot weather, I have been spending many days at the local swimming ponds/lakes with my 2 children. When we returned home from swimming the other day, my 4 year old had a very high fever and it lasted through the night and into the next day. A child of a close friend, also after swimming in the local pond (a different one from where we had gone), had the same type of illness. I have spoken to a few parents and have heard similar stories. I have not heard of any child coming down extremely sick. It is typically just the fever, lasting a day or two. Is this something (viral or bacteria) that people should be concerned about? Swimming in ponds is quite new to us (we used to frequent beaches & swimming pools) so, I am quite interested in any information about the quality of the pond waters near by that we are swimming in (Pearl, Sweatt Beach, Kingsbury & Tilson (not sure that is the correct name - off Beaver Rd, Franklin). We love having the ponds nearby and have been enjoying it very much, but I am becoming concerned over this coincidence of these fevers amongst some children. Thanks for any information.

  • 8/11 8:31pm Since the initial question about oil companies was about "oil rates", is anyone willing to share their lock in or cap price for 05 - 06? We got in just under $2 per gallon capped.
Cronin's quoted over the phone price was nowhere near that. Though I can appreciate that they may offer discounts to long term customers or other incentives not mentioned during my call.

  • 8/11 2:26pm To DB: Getting good air-conditioner service at this time of year and during a heat spell can be challenging, to say the least. I empathize and wish you the best of luck as I've been there. Try Jim Lane of Lane Refrigeration in Norwood (781-762-6226). These folks were a godsend when I was in a bind with my central air last summer.

  • 8/11 2:25pm I am just wondering if the town has any kind of program to purchase rain barrels.

  • 8/11 11:19am Could anyone recommend a "mother's helper" to help a stay-at-home mom with a variety of tasks in Norfolk? Help will be needed after the birth of a new born, expected in mid/late November. We will need help with housekeeping and day care for a 2 1/2 year old very well behaved boy. Hours and number of days per week are flexible. We are looking for a responsible person who is able to transport themselves to/from. Interested parties can email jillandjohn1@verizon.net.
    - JL

  • 8/11 11:17am Can anyone recommend an air conditioning service company.  My central ac unit kicks on about every 10 minutes for no reason.
Also, I recommend Howie Oil in Millis - our family has been using them for years.  Not only do they have one of the cheapest "lock in" rates, they will be at your house within hours if there's a problem.  Nice family run business.
    - DB

  • 8/11 11:00am To BF: Try K.D. Cleaning Co. A local business that really caters to the customers needs and has reasonable rates. They are closed for vacation this week so leave them a message. 528-0929. Good luckt!!

  • 8/11 10:59am Are you missing a brown tiger cat, short- or medium-haired, possibly male, with a very small "meow"? He's hanging around our yard near Kids' Place and seems to want to be friendly (doesn't quite trust us yet). He's also very hungry and needs a dermatologist! If you think he's yours, contact me at purrlene@hotmail.com

  • 8/10 10:07am Can anyone recommend a good cleaning person for our home? We have struck out twice now with this type of service and are simply looking for someone who is trustworthy, reliable, professional and thorough with the cleaning. We would not hire one of the large services as they tend to send out a variety of persons for the job. Thanks,

  • 8/8 3:35pm Fourth for Cronin - I've had to have them come in the middle of a blizzard !
    - BD

  • 8/8 3:35pm LM We also use Cronin Oil Co. and have locked in. If you have a problem they are there for you. We had a furnace problem about 5 years ago on a COLD winter's night and they were here in less than 20 min. We have had them for over 22 years and we like to do business with the local people.
    - BR

  • 8/8 2:01pm LM - I second the recommendation for Cronin. They are a great company. We have used them for many years.
    - DB

  • 8/7 10:09pm We've been with Cronin Oil for twenty years and just locked in an oil rate, as we always do. There's just no better service than Cronin. That's especially true if/when your furnace quits on you. There's less expensive oil dealers and many that take credits cards or electronic payments, but none better overall.
    - SP

  • 8/7 10:07pm LM - After much deliberation I changed oil companies, from Petro, after 5 years of great service and got a capped price I could deal with. I decided not to lock in due to all the fluctuation and speculation in the oil market. Please ask the Wm. for my email info. to discuss further.
    - DM

  • 8/7 10:06pm Semi-retired couple in their 60's available to house-sit this winter. Very responsible with great personal and professional references. If you are headed south this winter and don't want your home unoccupied, please respond and I will put you in touch with them!

  • 8/7 1:00pm I was wondering if anyone has done the daunting task of locking into an oil rate. Any recommendations for an oil company would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

  • 8/4 2:10pm DH - PeaPod is available in the Norfolk area.
    - BD

  • 8/4 12:58pm Thank you so much for the suggestions about shopping and so forth for my mother. I was wondering if PeaPod operated in your area - it actually started here, in Evanston IL, where I live. I just moved here from NYC, where I used a similar service (Fresh Direct) that was pretty good. I have been through many of the Norfolk links and sent a mound of stuff off in the mail. My mother has never seemed to get the hang of the computer! Even with the web research, it can't replace what people on the ground know, so thanks very much.

  • 8/3 9:15pm To: RH (et al)... There are several companies offering pre-paid cell service. You may want to search the Internet under 'prepaid phones' for the names of them. Some companies offer phones locally. For example, you can buy a 'TracFone' at the Radio Shack stores and 'Simple Freedom' phones are at Wal-Mart. But you'll find better deals including free phones if you do business on-line. The major phone companies also offer pre-paid service. Cingular, Verizon and T-Mobile offer their own Pre-Pay service but check the rates as some have a daily access charge and other fees. As I mentioned in my previous message, it depends on how much you'll be using the phone. I dropped my Cingular phone when the 2-year contract was up and now use TracFone (tracfone.com) and kept my original phone number. As it turned out, my phone is on the Cingular network so I'm still getting the same service at a lot less cost. In my last message, I mentioned that I'm not affiliated with any of these companies - just a retired guy on a fixed income looking for ways to hang onto a buck or two. But, if you decide to go with TracFone, let me know **BEFORE** you make your purchase and we can each get an extra 100 minutes for free via their referral program. Write to me at bitbum@gmail.com. Hope this helps...

  • 8/3 7:17pm RP: Thanks for that cellphone info. Could you tell me the name or website for a couple of those "pay-as-you go services"? It would be nice to find one that uses the facilities of a good service provider, such as Verizon.

  • 8/3 2:54pm To RH - Depending on your cell phone usage requirements, you may wish to consider one of the 'Pay-as-you-go' services. They offer nationwide cell phone service with no contract and no monthly bills. You purchase the phone along with the number of minutes and the length of service you wish - from 2 months to a year. There are no free weekend or nighttime minutes. Each time you turn on the phone, it displays the number of minutes remaining and the current service expiration date. When the service date or minutes is about to run out, you just buy more and add them to your account via phone or website. It's like the pre-paid phone cards except it's for cell phones. If you decide you don't need the service any more, you just stop using the phone - there are no penalties. Service is provided by the major phone companies and works the same as any of the contract phones. You get assigned a phone number or you can transfer the one you presently have. There are no special codes to enter in order to place a call. You can call any phone and any phone can call you. Text messaging, voice mail, call forwarding and caller ID are included. Occasionally, there are deals where you can get the phone for free. If this sounds like something you'd be interested in, write back and I'll be glad to tell you more. I'm not a salesman - just a satisfied user who likes to save money! I hope this helps.

  • 8/3 1:57pm DH - Norfolk does not have a grocery store of its own. We do have to travel either to Medway, Millis or Franklin. Medfield is a little far, I'd suggest she try the very nice, new Shaw's in Medway. Closest movie theater is in Bellingham off of Rt. 495. Regal theater I think. Pharmacy would be in Shaw's (Osco) or a CVS is in Franklin or in the Roche Bros parking lot in Millis. There is a Walgreen's in Medway. Good luck and "Welcome" to your mom!

  • 8/3 1:56pm CR -- Fireworks for a birthday party, huh? Must have been quite a bash! It was full-blown, July 4th-style display.

  • 8/3 1:09pm I thought I'd try again to see if there isn't someone reading this who could give some information for me and my elderly mother who just moved in to Norfolk - wondering where she can find the closest grocery store, movie theater, pharmacy, etc. She has been going to Medfield to Shaw's, but she wonders what might be closer. Thanks very much,
    - DH

  • 8/3 1:08pm Can anyone suggest the best, most economical, local cellular service provider for the Norfolk - Attleboro - Mansfield area? We don't need nationwide service.
Also, can anyone suggest the best brand of cell phone instrument: We need two; talk between phones capability would be nice; cameraphone is not really needed unless very inexpensive; text messaging would be nice if inexpensive. The home phone number will not be transferred to either cellphone. Thank you !

  • 8/2 9:43pm RP, JO: Re Cell Towers in Norfolk. Off the top of my head we've got Omnipoint/T-Mobil towers in at least two, and maybe three locations: co-located on the radio tower, in the flagpole on the Moonscape, and maybe another one located on an electrical transmission tower off Rockwood Road. Sprint has a couple in the flagpole and on the radio tower, and Cingular will be before the Zoning Board in August for two permits for antennas on electric transmission towers on Seekonk and next to the skating arena. These two locations had been approved last year for AT&T, but they never built the antennas and the permits lapsed so Cingular needs to come in for new permits.
Those are the permitted sites. I can't vouch that they've actually all been built, but I would bet the ones on the flagpole and the radio tower have been; I'm not sure about Omnipoint/T-Mobil's site on Rockwood.

  • 8/2 12:45pm I thought this might be of interest to those who feel nostalgic about Norfolk's agrarian past. From The Boston Daily Globe, October 9, 1874.
The Fair at Norfolk Yesterday - A Highly Successful and Interesting Exhibition

The ninth annual agricultural fair of the Norfolk Farmer's Club continued, yesterday, on the grounds of the club near the Norfolk station of the New York and New England Railroad. The opening on Wednesday was confined chiefly to the reception of agricultural implements and classifying the entries. Yesterday was a gala day, and at early morn crowds of vehicles and pedestrians could have been seen wending their way to the grounds, around which was the customary gathering of peddlers' stands. There was a good display of agricultural implements, cattle, pigs, horses, and poultry. Some of the important contributions deserve notice: Scotch harrows and ploughs, by Frank Sweeney; in the poultry department a good display of Brahmas, by Dr. H.C. Perry of Foxboro; a small box containing five fifteen-months-old ducks so much crowded that they could not open their bills to quack, exhibited by Eddy Bragg; merhead pigeons, by L. David of east Medway; Dominique fowls, by Otis Deane of East Foxboro; two owls, Horace Dupee; bantams, Seabright breed, Bathomeley Murphy of Norfolk; trio of Leghorn fowls by William H. Hunting of East Medway; pair of Calcutta fan-tail pigeons, by Freddy Adams of Milford; trio of Madagascar lopped ear rabbits, by Rufus Richardson of Norfolk....A large and fine display of vegetables, butter, bread, flowers, ladies' work, manufacturer's cloth of the Eliot Felting Company, etc., were given in Lyceum Hall, which, some years ago, was used as a Congregational Church, and where Moses Thatcher, the noted anti-Masonic preacher, was settled. His course in this respect was so displeasing that a portion of the members left the church and built another edifice opposite the old one, which is still used for religious meetings [this is today's Federated Church]....

At noon, there was a fine display of horses and at 1 1/2 P.M., a procession was formed and headed by the Franklin Cornet Band and marched to the large tent, where dinner was served and to which about 200 couples sat down. The Rev. Daniel Round presided, and after the Rev. Mr. Stewart had invoked the divine blessing, all fell to, and for a brief space of time, nothing was heard but the clang of knives and forks. At the conclusion of the repast, the presiding officer introduced the orator of the day, Colonel Daniel Needham of Groton, who made a very fine address, in which he contrasted the difference between the farmer and the merchant, and spoke of the great advantages in favor of the former, and portrayed in vivid colors the injustice which the farmer's wife has to labor under in overworking the body. Mr. Hammet was introduced as toast-master and Mr. Round responded to the first toast and was followed by Colonel Ebphalet Stone of Dedham in a very happy manner, keeping his hearers in good humor. Others followed, and, taken altogether, the speaking was of an unusually good order. The Secretary, Mr. L.C. Keith of Norfolk, read the reports of the committees....

  • 8/2 11:28am To ML: I worked at the water stop for Norfolk a year ago and riders start to come through anytime after 8am until 9:30ish. They come up Rt 27, make a right onto South/Seekonk, and then onto the water stop on the Norfolk/Wrentham line (Shears St?) I think. If you are at Tom's Tavern, it's the field to the left. You can also go to www.pmc.org and check out the route, if you'd rather watch them in another town. It's inspiring, try to go!
    - AL

  • 8/2 10:38am ML: Pan Mass Challenge - One of the routes leaves Babson College in Wellesley at 8:00AM on Saturday morning and will be making its way up Seekonk to Needham Street then North Shears. Anywhere along those streets should be good especially at Seekonk and Main Street. The front riders should be passing by starting around 8:45AM if they leave on time. You can get a lot of info from their site (www.pmc.org). I rode for 6 years, and they are a class outfit. More than 90% on their contributions making it to the end cause.
    - PN

  • 8/2 10:36am ML, the route can be found on the PMC website. They leave Wellesley at 7:30 AM. Norfolk is listed on their site as only being 17 miles away. That should put them through Norfolk around 8:30 or so (possibly sooner for the faster riders). Looks like Seekonk to Needham Street to North Street. www.pmc.org/routes.asp?RouteID=11

  • 8/1 6:32pm If anyone is been missing a tri-colored male beagle with no identification, since 7/31, please contact the animal control officer (ACO) at 508-528-3232.
Also, we are still looking for homes for "Tiny" and one kitten. Tiny is the very large black and white cat. She is double pawed and declawed and is really affectionate. She would be a great addition to a family with children. She would need to be an indoor only pet.
The one kitten left in the litter is finally ready to be adopted. He would be best in a family who could spend a lot of interaction time with him right from the start. He is very friendly and loves attention.
If interested please contact the ACO at 528-3232 or through email at Norfolkk9@aol.com

  • 8/1 1:26pm Hi, my mother just moved to Norfolk and we are interested in learning about area resources. Can anyone help with some of these questions? What's the closest movie theater, pharmacy, grocery store? Is there a book club or other social activities for seniors? I noticed the Garden Club meetings on the library calendar. Any other tips? Thanks very much,

  • 7/30 12:26pm Here's a website which will show the locations of the various towers in the area. Type in the name of the town in which you're interested, along with the State. Once you get to the map, click on any of the red 'pins' and you'll see a pop-up 'bubble' which displays the owners name. Then, if you click on the owner's name, you'll get a more detailed list of info about the tower and owner plus a satellite image of the location. Check it out here: www.cellreception.com/towers/

  • 7/28 2:54pm I just made an entry in my (fairly new) Blog on the topic of a path out to Pond Street as follows:
I just finished a relaxing week in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire. Wolfeboro is blessed with three major bodies of water: Lake Winnipesaukee, Lake Wentworth and Crescent Lake. Connecting the lakes with each other and the center of town is a multi-use recreational path. Like many of the best paths in the U.S., it was converted from it's earlier use as a rail line and is now a rail trail. So, in Wolfeboro, its very practical to hop on your bike and take a ride into town to do an errand such as mailing a post card, or to walk into town for breakfast. Many people do just that.

In my home town of Norfolk, the main paths are sidewalks, which fork out from the center of town. These are also used both by bikers and pedestrians, but there are many parts of town that are underserved. Three years ago, the town opened up a recreational center about two miles out of town on Pond Street. It's a great facility and is now the site of year round sports, a playground for young kids and a shade structure for concert events. What is missing is the path that will connect the Pond Street facility to the center of town, so that people of all ages can safely get to the park without having to get in an SUV. Wolfeboro is an example of how useful these shared paths can be. I'll close this note with a picture of Wolfeboro's Bike Path.

  • 7/28 12:09pm I would also like to add a word of appreciation to Pam Mele, now former Director of Norfolk Children's School. Our daughter attended NCS for two years, and we can't say enough about the wonderful, nurturing, caring, and special environment Miss Pam created at her school. That early experience helped to lay a foundation not only for school, but for social skills, love of learning, understanding and kindness toward others, and self respect. Pam is an extraordinary educator, and we and the entire community have been blessed to have her. I wish you well in your new endeavors, Pam. We are eternally grateful!

  • 7/26 10:15am Pam, I can still recall one early fall morning pulling up to Norfolk Children's School. There waiting for us was Ms. Pam. As the door opened we were all greeted with a big smile. With one last I love you the door shut and my daughter was bounding up the stairs. Her smile said it all to me, this was the right place for her and with all the comfort and security in the world she went into preschool knowing she was in very capable and caring hands. As I drove away that morning I too smiled as a feeling of calm came over me, my daughter was in very capable and caring hands. Then one rainy morning, in late spring, we arrived at preschool and waiting for us was Ms. Pam. Armed with an umbrella and a smile I pulled up and started to feel my eyes fill with tears. Our days with Ms. Pam were numbered. However, it was I that was truly going to miss seeing her smile and knowing that my daughter was in very capable and caring hands.
We will miss you Pam! Thank you for your years of community service to Norfolk!

  • 7/25 3:00pm I live in town and am interested in moving to a 4 bedroom home in a quiet neighborhood. I have seen 2 houses on Isoldmyhouse.com that look interesting. I haven't gone through the preapproval stage yet so I can't get the addresses of the homes. I'd like to drive by them before I waste anyone else's time with trying to set up a time to see the house. • 7/25 2:53pm To PCD - Wrentham State forest allows dirt bikes with parking available off Taunton Street in Wrentham and Foxboro Forest also allows riding opportunities with parking available on High Rock Road (off Route One by New England Pottery). Both require bikes to be registered. Another good place is Uxbridge motocross park in Uxbridge, MA. I'm not sure if they have re-opened but it is a great track if you like motocross more than trail riding. It is a little bit of a drive but worth it. Uxbridge is like everywhere else in that people complain about illegal riding, then when a place like Uxbridge comes along the first thing the town does is try to shut it down, go figure. One other place is across from Aggregrate industries near the outlet mall in Wrentham; I'm not sure if you are supposed to ride there but people have been forever and nobody seems to mind. It is too bad they built the condos off Route 115 near Millis. That was the best track for years but I assume that is no longer an option with the new housing. It's too bad really, there is a huge demand for riding areas but fewer and fewer all the time. Hope this helps you out.

  • 7/25 1:57am To the Norfolk Community and area towns: Since 1989, I have owned and operated Norfolk Children's School. During those years I have met many wonderful town employees, parents, children, and business owners. As many of you know, I have decided to sell my school to Renee Tocci of Franklin. She plans to continue to operate NCS as a quality preschool, and my soul soars at the thought of "my baby" being in Renee's capable hands. I wanted to thank those of you who have supported me over the years, and made my ownership and directorship of NCS a labor of love. Many of you contributed to the dedication of bricks in my honor at the new library. This recognition has touched me and my family deeply. Again, thank you for your incredible love and support.
Sincerely, Pam Mele "Miss Pam", Norfolk Children's School

  • 7/23 8:48pm DP - We were constantly having comcast problems and the same as most everyone else, it was our equipment until we had a wonderful service tech (Julie) who diagnosed an old cable underground and it was replaced this past March. Since then no problems. Good luck
    - JMC

  • 7/23 5:16pm DP- I tried to get a refund from Comcast but they said that they only refund part of your monthly fee for 48 hours of total service failure on their part. Of course if you work from home as I do, you might lose a day's pay because of their service problem. Annoying really!
    - MJD

  • 7/22 9:50pm JC, I agree they usually resort to "user / equipment error" which is pretty funny considering their trouble shooting consists of unplugging the modem. My service is back now 6:30 PM it was out all day. If you lost service for the day, call customer service and ask for a refund; may only be a few dollars but it's the principle. If enough people do it hopefully they will pay more attention.
    - DP

  • 7/22 9:48pm PCD - I may be wrong but I think I have seen signs up at the YMCA that dirt bikes are allowed in the Franklin State Forest on Forge Hill. Might be worth looking into.
    - MJD

  • 7/22 3:55pm In response to DP... yes.... I'm having major Comcast connectivity problems! What is going on with them? It sounds like they won't own up to the fact that there are problems with their service and they're very quick to blame it on the customer's equipment.

  • 7/21 10:03pm JB: Hardly an expert [!] but sounds like a dehumidifier in your basement might help. We have the same issue and run one almost all year round [deep winter months are drier with heat on 24/7] which really improves the smell. Kids spend a lot of time in our basement - it's finished - and can tell right away if the machine is off. Just a thought.

  • 7/20 11:42pm DH - We just got rid of our carpenter ants this week! We used F&W Pest Control out of Wrentham (508) 384-6400. We have used them for many different issues we have had over the years. They are not cheap, but they were here within hours and the ants are long gone! Good luck.
    - DB

  • 7/20 11:38pm DH, we used an exterminator and had fewer ants. This year we used the Raid ant spikes that you put in the ground around your house and have not had any more ants than when we paid the exterminator. They are about $14.00 for four and the exterminator was $200 for three sprays. I don't like the spray all over my deck where my kids play so we thought we'd try something else this year. It did seem to work as well. I guess you should see if you have a nest in the house though so maybe pay someone the big bucks this year and put the spikes out early next year. Just a thought.
    - MJD

  • 7/20 11:36pm With the humid weather we are having, I have noticed that our house has a musty, mildew smell, especially in our basement. Any tips on what to do? There is no evidence of mold or mildew just the musty smell.
    - JB

  • 7/20 12:19pm Thanks TS for your nice comments. The kids deserve the congratulations, as we just passed the $2,000 mark! We have great kids in this town, willing to help others, especially little 2-yr old Jack from Medfield, as he fights his battle with cancer. For those that missed it, you can go to www.necn.com and click on the Pan Mass Challenge logo, where a list of stories will come up (they should be on the site for a few months). "Kids Pedal Power" ran on the 9:00 news Monday night, and it shows the spirit of the kids in Norfolk. Thanks to all, parents included, and good luck to all those Norfolkians riding in the Pan Mass in a few weeks!

  • 7/20 12:13pm I do not currently have Verizon DSL due to the fact it is not available in the Freedom Trail area. I did have it when I lived in Quincy and found it to be a superior service to what I am currently getting from Comcast. The price is better and Comcast seems to nickel and dime their customers at every opportunity. I think Verizon would do the same but they are tariffed. It is correct that the farther away from the serving equipment you are the lower your speeds will be. The term tower is a misnomer as that would imply, to me anyway, that DSL is a wireless service. DSL is provided from either the Central Office in Wrentham or Franklin depending on where you live. It can also be provided out of the underground huts (CEVs) that are around town, if they have been upgraded. The limits of the service is between 18,000 to 20,000 feet from the Central Office or CEV depending on the gauge of the cable. If you are at the outer limits of the footage requirements I would advise you to go with Comcast. I have heard that Verizon will be running their new fiber optic network in the Wrentham, Franklin and Norfolk area within the next 2 years and that will provide phone, data and TV via fiber optics to the side of your house with speeds that are 15M downstream and 2M upstream.
    - DCC

  • 7/20 12:11pm I had Verizon and loved it, until I experienced Cable. Ya' know what they say once you've had speed you can not go back to DSL! :) Comparing DSL and Cable are like comparing Apples and Oranges

  • 7/20 12:07pm Carpenter ants are once again attacking our home. Does anyone know a good local exterminator? There seems to be a bumper crop of these critters in and around our home this year. Thanks,

  • 7/19 2:23pm Congrats to the children of Norfolk that participated in the PanMass Kids Ride last night. Although it was hot and steamy, it did not stop the 75+ kids from riding for the Jimmy Fund. Kudos to Alison and Dave Lutes and Sharon and David Midura for organizing a terrific event! My kids can't wait for next year!
    - TS

  • 7/19 2:21pm To DCC, The problem with DSL though is that you are affected by the distance to your home from the tower. You may not share the line, but if you are at the end of the line you will not get the same speeds as someone close to the tower. With Comcast that is not the case.

  • 7/19 10:57am Hi - I just read RP's note about bandwidth and sharing the same pipe etc. It is true what he says about the broadband service offered by Comcast but I believe he misspoke about the DSL service from Verizon. With DSL you do not share bandwidth with anyone, you have a straight shot to the equipment in the central office/CEV and speeds ARE NOT affected by number of users. You can verify this with a call to Verizon.

  • 7/18 11:55pm In response to JH: Both my children attended the Norfolk Cooperative Preschool in the center of town (located in the Federated Church, but not associated with the church). They both had wonderful experiences there and were fully prepared for kindergarten. I would recommend calling the director to see if there are openings - 508 528-6440.
All the preschools in town seem great. I think most of the preschools in town are NAEYC accredited. It really depends on what you are looking for. Some don't celebrate holidays. The Coop does and I wanted that for my children. Check them out. It may be difficult in the summer because the classrooms won't be decorated. Good luck.

  • 7/18 12:21pm To: JM, TEM, KF, GA... Re: Slow Comcast Internet service. You'll find that access will be slower than normal depending on the time of day, day of the week and where you live. Your cable is shared by everyone else in your neighborhood, so if there are a lot of folks on at the same time, your 'packets' of data will have to get in line with the others. When you consider that all 270 digital TV channels, several analog channels, 45 music channels, the 'On Demand' pay channels, the on-screen TV guide, digital telephone service and broadband Internet access is all coming into your house on a single piece of thin copper wire, it's amazing that the thing works at all!! When you call to complain, Comcast will not have any reports of outages or problems because there are none other than an Internet traffic jam in your area. Verizon DSL is no different and the same factors apply there. Years ago we referred to this as the "Simpson Factor". When it was the number one TV show, everyone got off the computer and tuned in to watch "The Simpsons". That was the best time to get online because speeds increased due to less activity. You could practically predict when things would slow down. For example, when the kids got home from school, they'd all get on AOL, IM or the chat lines and clog the throughput. As Comcast, Verizon DSL and the others gradually convert from copper wire to fiber optics, speeds will increase. I run several speed tests occasionally when I think things are slow and, as of this writing at noon on Monday, I'm averaging 3.5 Megabits download which is excellent. You can test your speed to various parts of the country at this site: www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ I hope this helps... PS... I'm not a Comcast employee... just a retired computer geek.

  • 7/18 12:20pm For JH, My daughter is going to the Norfolk Children's School in town. She attended last year and will be going back in the fall. They are on Union Street. I know how hard it is to find a good preschool. We looked at a bunch including the Dean Children's School. They are all good in their own way. Give diffent ones a call to set up a tour so you can get the feel for the right placement. Good luck.

  • 7/18 12:11pm To JH regarding preschools: Our son goes to the Goddard School on Route 1 (across from the Funway Cafe). He has been there about a year in the toddler room and we are very happy with the teachers, the curriculum and the overall program. Our son seems to be growing by leaps and bounds each day and is always happy when we pick him up at the end of the day. Currently I work part-time but will be trying to keep him in for two 1/2 days when I begin staying home with our second in November. I suggest you visit to see if it is the right place for you and your child. Good luck!

  • 7/18 1:55am For JH: Our youngest attended preschool at the Co-op in town at age 3 and was happy. Long story, but for his personal growth, interest level and development we decided to try the preschool at the Dean College Children's Center the following year. We all LOVED it. The program was excellent as were the teachers and student assistants [who were all early education majors]. Our son had exposure to wonderful resources and was challenged by the "curriculum." He also had lots of fun, which at that tender age is perhaps most important. And, when it came time to enter Kindergarten at HOD, our boy was ready and had a smooth transition. Tuition was more expensive, but we felt very much worth the difference. You might consider it. Good luck!

  • 7/16 10:33am Does anyone have the complete Verizon package.?. This would be for phone, computer and High D. T.V.. At the moment we have Comcast for tv and computer and Verizon for the phone. Verizon says you pay $299. plus shipping for the equipment to hook up. They tell me with Comcast we have been paying for renting it each month. There would be about $80. less a month to pay but I don't know how good verizon is for high speed internet. The $299. would be made up very quickly.
I have been doing the same as TEM cleaning out files as Comcast(or I thought my computer) was very slow. I hate to change my e-mail but if I get good feedback on Verizon I think I'll go with it. I do see a lot of Verizon trucks in the area but I don't know if they are doing repairs or what they are doing.

  • 7/14 5:04pm sNorfolk DPW - most towns utilize a bypass method for this type of work and do not shut off water for a whole day. I wonder if the Town is doing this work or hiring a contractor?
    - LS

  • 7/14 5:03pm To JM: Yes, I've noticed the same problem with Comcast--pages loading at a snail's pace, taking forever to go from site to site, and related problems. I really appreciate your post as I thought it was my aging laptop, and have been cleaning out unnecessary files, checking for updates I may have missed, defragmenting, cursing much more than usual as I work, etc., etc.

  • 7/14 4:49pm Kittens and cats looking for homes [Click on the images for a larger view - Wm.] -
The first kitten shown is orange. He is the kitten that was picked up from Dunkin Donuts about a month ago. He is now ready for adoption. He is friendly and sociable, but I would prefer that he would go to a house where there are no small children as he does get overly playful. This kitten is close to 22 weeks old.

The second kitten shown is named "Spitfire". He is 8 weeks old and ready to be adopted. He is part of a litter of 5.

The third kitten is all black with a little sable on the tips. He is 8 weeks old and is ready to be adopted.

The fourth kitten is also all black. he is 8 weeks old and ready to be adopted.

The next picture is of two kittens together.

The next picture is of a cat named "Tiny". Tiny is all black long hair with a white bib. This cat is middle aged and was found up on turner street. This cat is very large weighing 20+. This cat is double pawed and declawed in the front. She should be an indoor cat. She is very sociable.

The last cat listed has been a resident for a long time. He was living outdoors in a wild state for months. He is desperately looking for a home. He as well is middle aged. He is friendly and laid-back.
All of the cats listed are litter trained and ready to go.
If anyone is interested in adopting, please contact the Animal Control Officer at the police station at 508-528-3232. Sincerely,
    - Hilary Nolan Penlington, Norfolk Animal Control Officer

There'll be new dreams, maybe better dreams and plenty
Before the last revolving year is through.
And the seasons they go round and round
And the painted ponies go up and down
We're captive on the carousel of time
We can't return, we can only look behind
    From where we came
And go round and round and round
    In the circle game.

  • 7/14 2:47pm A friend of mine in Norwood has been relating the tale of woe that has overtaken Canadian hemlock trees in the area. See Hemlock Woody Adelgid for the seriousness of this blight or log on to U Mass Extention.
I had 40 of them when I lived in Dedham 35 years ago and they made a durable screen that I thought was disease and insect free. Any one seeing the symptoms?

  • 7/12 11:35pm Would someone be able to recommend a local company for gutter replacement?

  • 7/12 11:35pm To JW. I noticed Saturday that there were only 3 but I thought I might be wrong as I was driving over the bridge and did not stop and get out.. They have gotten so big I thought the turtles would leave them alone. Only 2 out of 5 survived last year.

  • 7/12 11:35pm SC: In keeping with the "round tuit" theme, there is all the other Yes hit "Long Distance Round Around."

  • 7/11 10:34pm I was wondering if there was still the concert on the common by the gazebo or is that postponed because of all the construction?

  • 7/11 10:30pm And don't forget the classic:

  • 7/10 4:01pm You all forgot the Yes classic "Roundabout."
    - AB

  • 7/10 11:26am Great idea, DF. The "Roundabouts" could play such tunes as "I Get Around" (Beach Boys), "When I come around" (Green Day), and "Come Around Again" (JET).....Let's do it!
    - RP

  • 7/10 8:22am Maybe Norfolk could have some t shirts with a "round tuit" on them to go along with the roundabout t shirts. These could memorialize study committees, the moonscape, and various other aspects of our town (&, I suspect, most other towns) that never seem to get a round tuit! ;)
    - SC

  • 7/9 10:14pm This town should have a community band called "The Roundabouts." I'd volunteer on drums...
    - DF

  • 7/8 5:46pm As I sit here typing, I'm proudly wearing my new ``Norfolk - Home of The Roundabouts'' T-Shirt. Yes, we've finally made the big time with our own T-Shirt emblazoned with the symbol of our unique new town center! What a great idea and beautifully done. But, you'd better hurry and get yours before they're all gone. I got mine at Tedeschi's in the Pondville section of town (Route 1A). A special thanks to those responsible for the creation and marketing. It's nice to know that despite the problems of the world, something as simple as a shirt can remind us that we still have a sense of humor.

  • 7/8 5:45pm I know the (DPW) has been very busy and my request for a sign may be on the bottom of the list. Two years ago I wrote a letter to the selectmen stating that my mother has a hearing problem and walks her dog up and down the street. One year ago I went to the selectman's office only to be told that my letter would be brought up at the soonest possible meeting. Well, we are into another year. I hope this can taken soon before my mother and dog are run over!

  • 7/5 1:22pm I know everyone is focused on the center of town, but does anyone know when the town will finish the corner of Union and North?
The piles of dirt have been there since last Fall. I can't imagine it will take more than a couple of hours to spread the dirt and put down seed.
    What's the hold up?

  • 7/4 9:18am Every July fourth (at least when I remember to do it), I read the following piece by E.B. White, who was asked "What is Democracy" by the Writers War Board in the summer of 1944. This was his reply.
"It is the line that forms on the right. It is the don't in 'Don't Shove.' It is the hole in the stuffed shirt through which the sawdust slowly trickles; it is the dent in the high hat. Democracy is the recurrent suspicion that more than half the people are right more than half of the time. It is the feeling of privacy in voting booths, the feeling of communion in libraries, the feeling of vitality everywhere. Democracy is the score at the beginning of the ninth. It is an idea which hasn't been disproved yet, a song the words of which have not gone bad. It's the mustard on the hot dog and the cream in the rationed coffee. Democracy is a request from a War Board, in the middle of a morning in the middle of a war, wanting to know what democracy is."
    Have a great day!

  • 7/02 3:05 pm To MFZ - Not sure if it is the same horn that we are hearing but we hear the horn go off twice in succession at 6:30 AM and twice at 6:30 PM. What we are hearing is the Walpole Fire Station that tests their alert to volunteer firemen every morning and evening.
We just moved here from Walpole last year and we used to actually use it as our alarm clock in the morning.

  • 7/01 10:48pm We are looking for a fireworks display in the local area. We are not interested in going into Boston for the Hatch Shell as we have little kids who would have trouble making the trip. What we are looking for is something that isn't too crowded and close by. Thanks for the advice in advance!
    - DS

  • 7/01 10:45pm I am pretty sure the horn you are hearing is from Medway Fire or Millis Fire.
    - SB

  • 7/01 9:01pm This may seem like an odd question but I was wondering if anyone can tell me what the horn is that we hear from time to time. I have asked several people since we moved here 4 years ago and no one has been able to tell me. We most often hear it in the morning but have heard it at night as late as 2:30 a.m. It sounds like a fog horn and reminds me of the horn used in the town where I grew up to alert the volunteer firemen to a fire. Since my friends who live on the other side of Norfolk say they have never heard it, I am wondering if it might be from Franklin. Just curious.
