  • 12/27 8:53pm   Looking for recommendations on gutter cleaning (better late than never :) ). Thank you.
    - JP

  • 12/27 8:49pm   PS, I also highly recommend Charlie Hewitt. He has done multiple projects for us over the past several years. He is a wonderful carpenter and a great person. I agree with everything that KW says about him!
    - KS

  • 12/27 8:47pm   A special thank you to the Norfolk Lions who've helped us to promote the annual Christmas tree pick-up fundraiser for the Boy Scouts of Norfolk Troop 80. This is one of our major fundraising events that helps us to support scouting activities.
Thanks very much to the Norfolk residents who have already signed up to have their Christmas trees picked-up and recycled on January 5th.
If you haven't signed up yet, there's still time.
    - E-mail us at xmastree@troop80.net or call 617-407-4045.
    - Give us your name, address, and telephone number.
    - Please mail a check payable to Norfolk Troop 80, BSA, PO Box 757, Norfolk, MA 02056.
The cost is $10 for trees under 10 feet and $15 for larger trees. The senior discount rate is $5.
Remember to place your tree at the end of the driveway or in a location where it can be seen from the road by 9 AM, January 5th.
If you forget to mail your check, please put your payment in an envelope and attach it to your Christmas tree or front door.
We look forward to helping our neighbors again this year and we thank you for your continued support!
Happy New Year from the Scouts of Troop 80, Norfolk
    - AB

  • 12/27 8:45pm   Charlie Hewitt put a door on my porch about 12 years ago that never closed right. My husband, no carpenter, fooled with it and it's better, but still doesn't close properly. Facts are stubborn things.
    - AB-G

  • 12/27 8:44pm   For TEM: Well, I never expected to be so in agreement with you, but here it is. Good for you, taking one of the main stream media to task, and very well said. There is no point below which they will sink, obviously. Thank God I didn't see it (because I never watch them). Happy New Year, TEM!
    - AB-G

  • 12/27 8:43pm   Wanted: Norfolk Horse Boarding! Responsible, no drama adult seeking friendly place to board one horse, hoping for access to riding trails. Needed by January 11th. Eeek!! Contact box415@norfolknet.com
    - MF

  • 12/24 12:19pm   TEM, Good for you, calling out the bad behavior by the journalists interviewing traumatized children! I was horrified to see that as well. I hope the coming year brings us all peace and more respect for others.
    - MJS

  • 12/24 12:09pm   KB - I just had my 2nd child and struggled to find good maternity consignment around here. I actually have a lot of maternity stuff I was going to sell online that I'd be willing to sell to your daughter, I have nice stuff and am not asking very much. I'm not sure what you are looking for but I have a lot of summer stuff and business casual work stuff. The sizes should fit her....8-10 or size Large. Contact me through the web master - I'd be willing to have you or her come over and go through the stuff. [You can use box414@norfolknet.com - Wm.] Thanks!

  • 12/24 12:04pm   Pack of 4 coyotes seen in our backyard on Village Green at about 7:30 this morning. Heading through the woods towards Cleveland Street.
    - JH

  • 12/24 12:02pm   TO SN: We have been using J. Sherrick Landscaping ( Ph: 508-380-5607 ) from Norfolk for about a year now. We have found them very reasonable priced compared to other companies.
    - TA

  • 12/24 12:01pm   I am so glad to hear of a place that sounds like they offer quality Chinese take-out in our area. The one in Franklin (Shaws Plaza) has truly gone down hill, badly in my opinion. So Asian Village is where I will go soon. Thanks RB for your suggestion!
    - CN

  • 12/24 12:00pm   PE... Thanks. We are on town water so guess we're safe... but... then again... who knows? Welcome to Norfolk. I't a good place to live.
    - JHR

  • 12/22 4:24pm   Happy Winter Solstice!
    - Wm.

  • 12/22 4:19pm   OMG -- we are so excited about the new Asian Village take-out restaurant in town (located where the former Golden Ginger restaurant was in Rocco Plaza on Pine Street). We love the food -- we've gotten take out 3 times from there in the last couple of weeks.
And the young couple that runs it is so friendly and accommodating -- you can special order stuff, e.g., we like white vegetable friend rice (so common in Chinatown) and it's no problem; also, they seem very flexible with regard to switching veggies that come with your dish when you ask.
And if you try anything on the menu, you must try the Salt and Pepper Calamari appetizer -- OMG -- you won't believe how good it is. It is a must have whenever we stop there. It's a spicy item but you can order it mild, as you can with any of the spicy dishes. So, support our local businesses and check it out!
    - RB

  • 12/22 4:18pm   PS, I highly recommend Charlie Hewitt to finish your basement project. We have known and worked with Charlie for over 10 years. He is trustworthy, personable, responsible, reliable and the quality of his work is excellent.
    Charles J Hewitt Carpentry, Norfolk, MA 02056, (508) 528-5675
    - KW

  • 12/22 4:16pm   To PE - We have been using Old Colony Clean Water for years for our reverse osmosis water system. We recently had them replace our water softener system as well. They are a Norfolk company and we would highly recommend them!
    - CK

  • 12/22 4:15pm   So glad the dog Chili is back! It's a true Christmas gift for the family. Actually, last night I kept thinking about him. Any idea where he was for so long? Did someone bring him in?
Also, does anyone know where and when there might be a recycling event for electronics and old battieries. I am going to check w. Town Hall on Monday as well.
    - AB-G

  • 12/22 4:09pm   EK: if you'd like me to post your cat through petfinder I certainly can. Send me an email at Norfolkk9@aol.com with all her information and pictures.
    - Hilary Cohen, Norfolk Animal Control

  • 12/22 4:08pm   To PS looking for a general contractor: try Knowles Construction right here in town. Please email knowlesconstruction@gmail.com or see website: paulknowlesconstruction.com
    - TK

  • 12/22 4:07pm   To JHR regarding residential water treatment: My house in Norfolk needs water treatment because the water from my well contains elevated levels of manganese, which is medically harmless but is staining my fixtures, dishes, and linens, and, more seriously, radon, which is a carcinogen. You will need to have your own well water tested to see if this is a concern for you. If your water comes from a municipal supply these concerns are being addressed for you.
    - PE

  • 12/22 4:06pm   In response to recent events the NCL recognizes the spirit of community.
The tragedy that occurred last week in Newtown, CT has touched each of us in very different ways. Perhaps you are feeling sad for those who died and their families, proud of the heroes who emerged or confused at the unspeakable violence. Now is a time for reflection and peace as we celebrate the holidays and look ahead to 2013. We have witnessed the Newtown community rise up and join together in healing and we hope the town of Norfolk can also find peace within our own community.
Beginning on Saturday evening, you will see a candle memorial lit in the center of town as you drive around the rotary. The Norfolk Community League has donated 26 LED candles that will be in place for 26 days as a tribute to recognize and remember all who lost their lives in this terrible tragedy. We hope that when you drive or walk by the candles, you will find a source of strength during the days ahead.
From our community to your family, we wish you peace and happiness during the holiday season.
    Sincerely, The Norfolk Community League
    - JT, NCL

  • 12/22 4:05pm   I am looking for a referral for lawn and yard care. I have been using two separate companies and want to consolidate. I'd like to use someone locally and not a chain or franchise. Any recommendations are appreciated.
    - SN

  • 12/22 4:04pm   To P. S. - I have used Wayne Urquhart for several projects and am very pleased with his work. He is dependable, fair and produces an excellent job. He can be reached at 508.384.1900.
    - SN

  • 12/19 5:05pm   Looking for a recommendation on a general contractor who can help finish off a project to finish our basement. I'm at the point so far that I have the rough electrical inspection but now need some help with the fire blocking of the electrical work for my framing inspection. I'll then need someone to do the blue board and finish work.
    Thanks,
    - PS

  • 12/19 5:04pm   I sent the below note to MSNBC. Although I singled out MSNBC because it is the coverage and network I watched during and immediately following the horrifying event in Newtown on December 14th, it is my guess that other networks, cable or otherwise, were also guilty of the same offensive and irresponsible behavior. I encourage others to send their own written complaints if they witnessed the same treatment of those children, whether on MSNBC or any other network news coverage.
"The practice of interviewing traumatized children still at or near the scene of an event like the Newtown massacre is not acceptable reporting or responsible journalism. It is, in fact, grossly negligent, demonstrating absolutely no regard for the emotional well being of the kids being questioned or interviewed at such a grossly inappropriate moment. Additionally, acceptance or encouragement of such callous behavior on the part of NBC-News Teams and reporters continues to be just as inexplicable and perplexing as our lack of adequate gun control laws."
    - TEM

  • 12/19 5:03pm   PE... Why do you feel that Norfolk's water needs to be treated? I've lived in town for close to 40 years and have never treated it. Is there something I should know?
    - JHR

  • 12/19 5:01pm   EF: Make sure you get a quote from Solar Flair. Established company and very good to their employees. My son-in-law works for them. They have an informative website too.
Does anyone know of a good consignment place for maternity clothes? My daughter just learned she is expecting her first and is on a budget. She's about a size 10 (now).

  • 12/13 5:32pm   EF My understanding is that in order to offset the costs, both the state and federal government may offer incentives/credits to convert to solar. I have heard some say the cost is actually free after all is said and done and others have told me of much smaller amounts covered. Before I did anything I'd be sure to check what the actual finished costs will be. We are considering panels as well so if you'd like to discuss it please get in touch with the webmaster and he can give you my contact information. [Use box413@norfolknet.com - Wm.]

  • 12/13 5:24pm   EF, About Solar Energy. There was/is a company out of CA. that was advertising this year, the installation of free solar panel systems for residential applications in our area. The basic way it worked was that they install the system and sell you the energy produced for a fraction of the cost compared to our current rate paid to our local power companies. Any excess power produced belongs to them and sold back to the local power companies plus they collect any government subsidies.
For more information, check out [blogs.scientificamerican.com page] I forgot the exact name of the firm that I had called (sorry) but while on the phone, the person on the other end asked my address so he could see if my home was suitable for solar. He pulled up my location on a satellite imaging site and found that I had too many shade trees. I think that if you tried a simple search of the net, you might come across this company. Best of luck in reducing your carbon footprint, "Mother N" thanks you I'm sure.

  • 12/13 5:23pm   Re the doors, I would simply call the Secretary of State's office and tell them your concerns. They will send you to the right person (it may take a few different tries, but if it's important to you, as it should be, it's worth the time. You could go to www.ma.gov and search public handicap access. Or just start by calling the Town Admin. and see what he says. That's why we pay these people, isn't it?
    - AB-G

  • 12/13 5:22pm   To DW, I am sure there is lots of fluff and waste (there is in my own budget) in the state budget. I would appreciate specific details on areas that you believe should and most importantly could realistically be cut from the budget.

  • 12/11 7:17pm   EF - Would love to know what you hear about solar companies. We received a quote from Next Step Living for $25k and it sounds like it will result in $3k savings per year. Unfortunately nothing is guaranteed and it is questionable what happens if its a snowy/rainy year.

  • 12/9 4:59pm   We are entertaining the thought of putting solar panels on our home and would like hearing from people who have done so and information on benefits/savings. We know of 3-4 companies out there. A friend had them installed last year and her savings have been incredible. Not sure if she got a good deal a year ago because panels were not that common in her area, but when we had someone out, the savings were not going to be that substantial. Yes, we would reduce our carbon footprint, but to go through the installation process and commit to 20 years with a company for what we were going to save... just not sure... We do have more companies coming out to the house. Thanks.

  • 12/9 4:57pm   LO, we always went to Mini Acres in North Attleboro, near the mall, every year for a cut your own tree, but we thought they were closed for good. Well, I found out just a couple of days ago (too late for us this year) that they were bought and improved and are now reopened and called, Miller's Family Farm. You can find them at millersfamilyfarm.net. We are going to visit them this weekend even though we already picked our tree just to say hi and roast some marshmallows!

  • 12/9 4:54pm   JMF: Hands down, best piano guy I ever worked with is Buck Rogers (yes, that's his name) from Craftsman Piano in North Attleborough. 508-643-3291. I won't bore you with the details of the problems I had with my piano, but he is an absolute pro, and his fee was nominal for the work he did. I think his main business is piano restoration, but no job is too small. He's at my house semi-annually for tuning. I highly recommend him.

  • 12/9 4:53pm   To JW - You are absolutely right, and I'm glad someone has brought up the issue about getting our public buildings fitted for handicap door access. There are seniors in Norfolk who use walkers, and parents with strollers all trying to do business in these buildings. There's no easy entrance for these people and there should be. I'm 100% with you. Thank you J.W. for bringing this issue up.

  • 12/9 4:51pm   Tutoring services - ``Your student is not working up to his/her potential.'' This comment is very common. Many of our students do not reach their academic potential for many reasons. Often students become overwhelmed and feel they are ``lost''. Imagine going to work each day only to feel you just cannot keep up. This is a horrible feeling that affects every aspect of life. Tutoring is a surefire way to give your student an opportunity to reach their potential, feel good about themselves and realize their own abilities. I am a former teacher who now works with students from 1st grade through high school. I concentrate on reading, writing, math, study skills, SAT prep. as well as other individual needs. I interact with teachers to ensure classroom goals are attained. Your student's success becomes my goal as we work together. If you feel that your child would benefit from tutoring, please give me a call to discuss how we can work together to ensure a successful year. Susan 508-528-2399 smmurray0305@gmail.com

  • 12/6 12:29am   Winslow calls on governor to cut fluff and waste before local aid.
NORFOLK (December 4, 2012)-- State Representative Dan Winslow (R-Norfolk) today opposed Governor Patrick's proposal to cut local aid in Massachusetts by 1% because of declining state revenues, calling on the Governor first to cut the fluff and waste from state government and then to embrace reforms for immediate cost savings. In addition to his proposed local aid cuts, under his so-called 9C emergency powers, the Governor cut 100% of prison mitigation money paid to prison host communities statewide including Norfolk and Walpole.
"The budget shortfall should not be borne disportionately by some towns and not others," said Winslow, "and across the board cuts fail to place a priority on our most needy and disadvantaged citizens." Winslow pledged to oppose cuts to local aid until the Governor first exhausts all possible state savings by cutting "fluff" and by embracing cost savings proposals advanced by Winslow and others.
"These are challenging times, but these are the same people who told us last month that the economy had turned around," noted Winslow. "I'm sorry they couldn't share the true condition of our state economy until after the election. Political rhetoric is no substitute for prudent fiscal management." Winslow will renew many of his proposals to cut costs and increase non-tax revenue as an alternative to cutting local aid. "The quality of life for our citizens, our schools, our police and fire protection, and infrastructure depends on local aid. In my view, those should be the last dollars cut from the state budget and I will work to suggest better alternatives than to hurt people in our cities and towns."

  • 12/3 3:55pm   Just wondering who I would speak to in town about getting our public buildings (library, police, town hall) fitted for handicap door access. I recently tried to open the doors of all three buildings while pushing a stroller and found it very frustrating that NONE of the public buildings had a button to open the door. Considering two of the three buildings are fairly new, I am disappointed that the designs lack access for people who are in wheelchairs, have strollers or suffer from a muscular disease (such as MS - which I have) who often struggle with opening doors. Isn't this covered under the Americans with Disabilities Act? Funny there are ramps and elevators but no easy way to get in the buildings without a huge struggle! It's a universal design that would benefit many.

  • 12/3 3:37pm   From the MA Fish & Wildlife eregulations site...
"Hunting, fishing, sporting, and trapping licenses must be carried on your person and shown on demand to any officer empowered to enforce these laws, and to landowners or lessees while on their property. A hunting, fishing or trapping license is not a permit to trespass or intrude on private land, posted or not. Remember, your privilege to enter on private land is a courtesy extended to you by the owner. Practice courtesy and leave a good impression if you want to continue hunting, fishing, or trapping."

I also know for a fact they teach at the classes that hunting on private land posted or not is illegal, unethical, and irresponsible.

  • 12/3 3:33pm   12th Annual Haunted Train Ride and Spooky Maze a Spectacular Success! $6,300 in Proceeds Distributed to Worthy Norfolk Causes.
The 12th Annual Haunted Train Ride and Spooky Maze was a huge success again this year! The event was co-sponsored by Norfolk Community League (NCL) and the Norfolk Lions. The event was held on Saturday, October 13th at the Holmes' Fields. Over 1500 riders and guests rode the train through the haunted woods and visited the Spooky Maze! The proceeds from this year's event are going to worthy Norfolk causes through distributions from the NCL Charitable Trust and Norfolk Lions. Proceeds this year were $6,300.00. This amount is an all time record for the Train Ride! We also collected a truck full of donations for the Norfolk Food Pantry as well as winter coats for those less fortunate. The woods were haunted by local community groups including Lions Soccer, NCL, Norfolk Fire and DARE, Norfolk Lions Club, Robert Letalien, and King Philip High School Leos Club. The Spooky Maze was decorated and haunted by Norfolk Boy Scouts and King Philip High School Drama Club. Volunteers from many local high schools and groups assisted in making the evening successful including: King Philip, Tri-Country High School, Ursuline Academy, Xaverian High School, Norfolk Agricultural High School, Franklin High School, and Mount St. Charles High School. The pumpkins in the patch were carved by Norfolk Girl Scouts and Norfolk Cub Scouts as well as community members. The Haunted Train Ride was planned by committee members Tom Grant, Don Hanssen, Dave Turi, Dave Lutes, Joe Sebastiano from the Lions, Lisa Noke, Lisa Seifart, Tracy Hilfrank and Tara Spellman from NCL.

  • 12/3 3:24pm   I always go to Norfolknet when I need a recommendation for something that I need done. I have a person that I would like to recommend.
If anyone is looking for a real estate broker/attorney, I have used Jessica D. Baker Attorney/Broker (508-543-2720), I used her to sell my condo and she sold it in three days. She is extremely courteous and professional and kept me up-to-date on the status of the sale. She really differentiates herself as she is an attorney as well as a real lestate broker. I was amazed on how efficient she was. I did not have to do a thing, therefore, I would most definitely use her again. She is able to list your home, do the purchase and sales, and is able to read through all the documentation necessary when selling a property. She has such a niche with her combined practice.

  • 11/29 12:15pm   MB, you are wrong about hunting on un-posted land. In Massachusetts, if the land is not posted, you may legally access the land for hunting. This dates back to colonial times. Lawmakers back then recognized that fish and game were the property of the government, not the land owner. People back then needed to hunt to survive. Based on that, they granted right to access private land for the purposes of hunting, trapping, and fishing. This further reflected in MGL Chapter 131: Section 36. Fishing, hunting, or trapping on private, posted land
Section 36. A person shall not fish, hunt or trap on private land without permission of the owner or tenant thereof, after such owner or tenant has conspicuously posted thereon notices which bear the name of such owner or tenant and which state that fishing, hunting or trapping on such land, as the case may be, is prohibited.
The key to the above law is that the land has to be posted. That being said, no self respecting hunter should hunt on land without the owner's permission.

  • 11/27 3:08pm   DT, as an avid hunter, I will tell you that it is the hunters responsibility to know where he has permission to hunt. With the GPSs available today there is no excuse for not knowing where the boundaries are. The hunter is also responsible for making sure he is more than 500 feet from a house and 150 feet from a road before he discharges a firearm or releases an arrow. Last time I was hunting, I don't remember seeing a 500 foot radius marked around each house. Any good hunter will take the time to scout out the land prior to hunting season so he/she knows where the boundaries and set backs are. This town bylaw changes nothing for the hunter who takes the time to get the land owner's permission and scout the land ahead of hunting season. I see it as a compromise to prevent an all out ban on hunting, like many surrounding towns have.

  • 11/27 3:06pm   DT: You are most likely right, most hunters don't hunt land they don't have permission to be on, it is a common courtesy amongst hunters. According to MGL regarding hunting, no hunter can hunt private land without obtaining permission from the land owner. Any responsible hunter will make sure they obtain permission prior to entering someone's land. In fact, when you take the required hunter safety course, that is one of the main points they stress during the class.
It saddens me that there is a warrant article on the agenda for Thursday's meeting that has false statements directly in it. The information with the warrant states in it that a hunter can come onto your property unless you post signs stating "no hunting" or "no trespassing". This is just not true, as I already stated MGL states it is unlawful for any hunter to hunt private land without consent of the land owner. It is merely a good house keeping measure for a landowner who may own land abutting public hunting land to post signs, that way a hunter can clearly see the property line. There will always be those hunters who disregard law and practical hunting responsibilities, this is inevitable, however to make false statements, and create by-laws that make hunting harder for those who do abide by the laws is just silly and it creates more hassle for our PD.
I advise people in Norfolk to read the hunting laws already in place in the state of MA prior to town meeting, that way those who do not participate in hunting can be informed of the laws just as those who do participate already are.

  • 11/27 3:01pm   The posting about cell phone numbers going public is untrue. There was a proposal in 2006 to make a cell phone directory but that proposal was shelved. Telemarketers won't have your cell number but you can register your cell phone # on the Do Not Call Registry anyway (and you don't have to call - it may be easier to register up to 3 numbers at a time on their website).
    urbanlegends.about.com/od/business/a/cell_directory.htm

Analysis: This online rumor has been circulating continuously since September 2004. Despite a very small grain of truth at its core, it's mostly false, outdated, and misleading. Here's what you need to know:

    a. Yes, you CAN add your cell phone number(s) to the National Do Not Call Registry.

    b. No, you WON'T suddenly be at the mercy of 10,000 telemarketers if you don't.

    c. Contrary to what's claimed, cell phone numbers are NOT about to "go public."

Background It's true that a few years back several of the major wireless providers announced a plan to establish a universal cell phone directory, but the plan did not consist of simply publishing everyone's cell phone numbers for the world to see, nor were the numbers to be "released to telemarketers" as claimed above. The directory was to be made available only via telephone, only to those who dialed directory assistance and paid a fee, and only with individual wireless customers' consent.

The point has been moot since 2006, when the plan to create a wireless telephone directory was permanently shelved. I'm not aware of any similar proposals in the works.

  • 11/26 2:47pm   Many past postings have noted the importance of supporting businesses in our town. Also, we post our displeasure when they go out of business or just leave the area. However, we currently have [...] tayloring right here in Norfolk through Carol's Place Drycleaners. [...] Please support local businesses. It will benefit all of us in the future.

  • 11/21 4:48pm   Norfolk Lions Christmas Tree Sale
The Norfolk Lions Club is in full swing with its annual Christmas Tree Sale!! This month long event is one of the Lions Club's most important fundraisers and a great opportunity for the Lions to connect with so many members of the community during the holiday period. Sales began on November 23, 2012 and continue until all trees are gone, so we hope to see you down at the lot early for best selection.
All of the proceeds from the sale of the trees go right back into local Norfolk charitable programs as well as to Lions International efforts to eradicate blindness and diabetes.
The Norfolk Lions have been selling Christmas trees for over 20 years! As has been its tradition in the past 7 years, the Norfolk Lions Christmas Tree Sale is located on the lot next to the Dunkin Donuts on Main Street in downtown Norfolk. We thank the owners of our local Dunkin Donuts for their continued support of the Norfolk Lions.
Selling hours are weekdays from 3:00 PM to 9:00 PM and weekends from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM. The Lions will be happy to trim the bottom of your tree, wrap it and secure it to your car, although pickup trucks are very much appreciated. We accept cash and checks to the Norfolk Lions Club; sorry no credit cards.
Did you know that it takes 10 to 12 years of growing time and professional care to bring a Christmas tree to harvest? Our trees are transported by trailer truck from northern Maine and they are fresh and beautiful! We sell the most popular types, Balsam and Frazier Fir trees, as well as wreaths. We also have tree bags and tree life preservative to promote needle retention and help keep your tree fresh.
"Monies that the Lions generate go to seed such research as blindness prevention, diabetes prevention and numerous other causes", says Dave Turi this year's President and King Lion. "Norfolk Lions has donated over $250,000 in it's over 50 years of service to the community".
This year we will be collecting non-perishable food donations for the benefit of the Norfolk Food Pantry. Like many of us, the food pantry has been hit hard during these economic times and we would like to help out. Dave Turi further comments, "Your contributions to the Norfolk Food Pantry would be appreciated and could not come at a better time of year."
The Norfolk Lions Club currently has 83 men and women members and is growing! We meet on the fourth Tuesday of the month at 7:30 PM at the Lafayette House Restaurant on Rt. 1 in Foxboro, MA. For more information or to get involved with the Norfolk Lions Club, please contact Bill Hawkins, Membership chairman at norfolklionsclub@yahoo.com or any other Lions member you may know.
Lions Clubs International is the world's largest service club organization with nearly 1.35 million members in approximately 46,000 clubs in 206 countries and geographical areas around the world. Since 1917, Lions clubs have aided the blind and visually impaired and made a strong commitment to community service and serving youth throughout the world. Check out www.lionsclubs.org.

  • 11/20 12:26pm   King Philip to Host Steel Drum Classes.
Have you ever wanted to learn how to play the steel drums? The World Percussion music offering has traveled from Africa to Cuba to Brazil and now, Ryan Loud, one of our percussion teachers is taking the program to Trinidad. Steel drums originated in Trinidad and are cut from oil drums and hand hammered to make melodic pitches. King Philip music is proud to say we will have our own full size steel drum ensemble with the potential of growing bigger. Many steel bands in Trinidad are over 100 members large! And we can honestly say we will be the only high school in New England who has a steel band.
This opportunity is open to everyone; not just music students. Community members are invited as well. Classes will start at KP on Saturday, December 8 at 9am until 1pm. Go to www.kingphilipmusic.org and click on the registration packet located on the lower portion of the home page. The packet includes all class dates. • 11/20 12:20pm   Just want to give a thank you to Norfolk residents who donated towards hurricane sandy pet shelter relief. This week we collected all this for the New Jersey animal shelters that are still in operations due to hurricane Sandy. Even as of today, the shelters are being staffed by disaster specialists and aco's (many from MA) and the last report stated that they are still taking in dogs and cats. This is Norfolk's portion of a load that is going down today, and they will also be receiving a load on Thanksgiving. Very special thanks also to Healthy Pet Supply in Norfolk for donating some dog food and cat food and a HUGE thanks to The Village Groomer and Pet Supply in Walpole who donated almost a pick up truck load of dog/cat food and shampoos. Well Done Norfolk! Here's some pictures from yesterday during collection.
Also, don't forget in two weeks we're having our low cost micro chipping clinic. It's an even better deal this year than last year as I was able to secure a better price on the chips themselves. For a 25.00 donation into the animal gift account we will implant your pet with a micro chip AND register it for you. Giving your pet added safety and security with permanent identification never felt so good knowing your donation will help animals that come in to Norfolk looking for help. It's being held Saturday Dec 1st at the Village Groomer from 10 - 3 pm. Please call/email to make an appointment time for your pets. We will also being doing walk in appointments if we have extra micro chips. You do not need to be from Norfolk to Participate. (508) 440 2816 or Norfolkk9@aol.com

  • 11/15 5:17pm   Just quick review on a local business referred to me by the people on Norfolknet. I had Randy from Patriot Appliance come to fix an ice-maker at my house. It broke about a year ago so I called him to fix it. He gave me some pointers on things to do, charged me nothing and I had great intentions to do them. Fast forward a year. I called him again early this week to have him come out and fix it. He came out, diagnosed that it was in fact a bad ice-maker and called his supplier. His supplier wanted $160 for it and he thought that was way too high. He gave me the part number while still at my house, looked it up with me on Amazon ($50 shipped to my door) and showed me how to install it once it arrived! He charged me a very reasonable service call for his time and was on his way. I read often but seldom post, but I must say that he exceeded my expectations and would recommend him to anyone.

  • 11/12 11:06am   Seems to me the Warren sign in Wrentham center is akin to the teen girls flipping off the driver on Route 115 - salutes of a new generation. Norfolk - put that in your medicinal marijuana pipe and smoke it :)

  • 11/12 11:05am   Warning, the following post contains bad puns and mixed metaphors. Read at your own risk.
I did have to chuckle at the electronic sign on election day reading "poles." I half expected a Solidarity banner held by Gdansk ship workers outside the school entrance and Lech Walesa featured on the ballot, but all I was greeted with was a feeble "FORWARD" that feels more like "Sideways" (apologies to the film of that name, but maybe we could all do with some wine and less whine in the wake of Tuesday's results.) Big Bird may have escaped the ravages of "vulture" capitalism for now, but I hope all of our collective gooses aren't cooked as the proverbial car that was pulled from the ditch of depression takes us over the fiscal cliff "Thelma and Louise" style :)
    - DA

  • 11/12 11:04am   BA: I agree, let's clean up the signs. On the other hand, I have been looking closely, and your theory about more signs left behind by the Republican party candidates is just not accurate. I may have seen more Warren signs than any other, if I bothered to count. Either way, the point is, time to clean them up.

  • 11/11 12:19am   I know the election is over, but does anyone agree that the Elizabeth Warren billboard-sized poster that is propped right in Wrentham center a low-blow to Scott Brown? I thought it was nasty to the home town candidate. Just curious if anyone agrees...

  • 11/11 12:18am   BC, hear hear! I also received the bird from two teenage girls recently. I was driving north on 115 coming from the Pond St. complex towards town. They were walking in the same direction, right on the road. I shouted out the window for them to walk on the (brand new) sidewalk. Not 5 seconds later, they flipped me off. Seems the new salute from the generation, huh? ;)

  • 11/11 12:16am   Hey friends and neighbors, the election is over. Let's be GOOD neighbors and rid the streets of those ugly campaign signs. I know in the past that it has been tradition to leave the winning signs up for a few days, but all I see is Brown, Bielat, and Romney signs up. One could almost accuse the losers of sour grapes, or not caring about cleaning up after a messy campaign season.

  • 11/11 12:12am   Well, MI, it is appalling that those two were featured as leaders worthy of display in the school. I suppose indoctrination and propaganda MUST start as EARLY as possible. Be prepared to be called a racist and a hater.
I was annoyed just to see a punctuationerror on one of the voting signs.
Let's see... why not take advantage of a teaching moment. It doesn't HAVE to "damage self esteem." I hope the teacher recognized the mistake, to begin with. There were many with whom I worked who wouldn't have and that was in high school. And good luck with those sandbags! I also thought they looked bad. It may not have been the custodians, but somone had no respect for the place. Well, on the much brighter side, at least the voters of Norfolk did a damn good job.

  • 11/11 12:04am   ACC/RG: I've often wondered about the rolls of poles in America. Two things are certain:
    1. They make wonderful sandwiches.
    2. There are always plenty of them around to help screw in light bulbs.

  • 11/10 11:59pm   It came as somewhat of a surprise to me that over 1000 of our fellow Norfolk residents voted against the non-binding question on the recent Massachusetts ballot advocating the overturn of the Citizens United decision (probably the second worst Supreme Court decision in that institution's history) by amendment. Is it because a substantial number of those voters felt that the constitutional amendment process is too cumbersome and difficult to be considered, no matter the issue? Or could it be that a number of those voters somehow believe that corporations are, in fact, people and it's a free speech issue? Just curious.
Even though the obscene amounts of money rained down on candidates by Super-Pacs had minimal effect on outcomes this time, including one single member of the electorate who shelled out close to $80 million on Romney, such out-of-control attempts to corrupt and distort the election process and our democracy remains an appalling waste, especially if one considers how that money could have been put to far better humanitarian use assisting the recent homeless and the future rebuilding of the Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, and related coastal areas caused by hurricane Sandy.

I tried them at the new PS in Walpole for a face trim. Awful. Thanks,

  • 11/10 11:53pm   Oh my gosh. People. ACC was referring to the electronic sign having a spelling error. We vote at polls, not poles. Anyone else find it ironic the incorrect spelling was posted on the road leading to our new school ?
    - RJP

  • 11/8 1:59am   For ACC regarding the electronic sign - here is information that was in the Norfolk Boomerang. The Norfolk Police Department has acquired two vehicles and an electronic signboard, all free of charge. Two Hummers come from military surplus. One will become the Police Department's go to vehicle during snowstorms and other bad weather that makes traveling on roads treacherous. The other one will supply parts for the first one, meaning the vehicles should cost little to maintain. The electronic signboard will inform passing drivers of upcoming events and public safety announcements, among other things.

  • 11/8 1:32am   To the two teenage girls hanging out on the tracks today (late afternoon [Tue]) near the Freeman School: you should really think before you go and do something ridiculously stupid like throw a rock at a kid on his 4-wheeler (then flip your middle finger at him and run away toward the Freeman). Thankfully he had a helmet on, but should that rock have hit him in his plastic goggles or anywhere in the facial region, the consequences could have been so much worse!!! You better thank your lucky stars that my son and his friend are ok. The next time you think of doing something as moronic and childish as throwing rocks at innocent kids, think twice - the results could be life changing (for all involved)!
    - BC

  • 11/8 1:31am   I read yesterday, in the middle of the Herald, that the BPD is planning to block off any streets leading to the Convention Center where Romney will be having his party tonight as well as street barriers. No mention of BHO's party needing protection. So sad.
    - AB-G

  • 11/8 1:30am   ACC - It is what I refer to as "the dumbing down of America". Just as upsetting to me is the laziness of our society. I was dismayed by the ripped sand bags thrown in the front planting bed at the voting entrance of our new, beautiful, expensive school. Could the custodian or another staff member take 10 minutes to move these to a less visible location?
    - KAF

  • 11/8 1:28am   An election day poster our Norfolk public school "art teacher" created of political figures. Soooo glad to see Mao and Che made the cut. Mao credited with 50-78M deaths of his own people and Che the wonderful murderous communist revolutionary in Cuba. If they are going to display them they should at least teach our kids about who they really were. Come-on Mr Reilly - you could have found pictures of people for our kids to look up to.

  • 11/8 1:21am   NK, are you serious about hiring someone to care for your two children, an infant and a toddler, do your laundry, light housecleaning, meal preparation, AND manage your dog for $12 to $15 per hour? A local dog walking service charges more than that per hour to walk one dog! And they should! The sad part is that you will probably find someone; for your children's sake, we can only hope that the person you exploit is kind and caring, and good at folding clothes.

  • 11/8 1:13am   Hello! Next week on November 13, 14, and 15 the King Philip High School's Cross Country Team is going to be holding a fundraiser at Uno's in the Wrentham Outlets. Any order you make at that restaurant on those days will see 20% of the sales go toward KPXC.
    dl.dropbox.com/u/18916017/KPXC.pdf
If you eat in, you'll have to print out the above ticket and give one to your server. If you order over the phone or online, just mention you're part of a "DoughRaiser" for King Philip Cross Country and you're good to go!
Grab your friends, spread the word, and make sure you eat at Uno's next week!
Some info about KPXC - At the Hockomock League Championships (one of the most competitive XC leagues in the state) last week the Girls' team finished in 3rd place, their top finish in 10 years, and the Boys' team saw a first place individual finish for the second year in a row. Both teams had two athletes place in the top 15, a feat hard for the Hockomock League Championships which has over 500 athletes in all 4 races. On Saturday 11/10 14 of our top runners will run at the state meet at the Wrentham Developmental Center, and we hope to have at least 4 of those athletes qualify for the All-State meet at Northfield the week after.

  • 11/4 6:38pm   LD - We have also experienced the same thing. About a year and a half ago, some of our mail was opened just enough to look inside to see what was inside. I called Norfolk Post Office and they said it could be the scanning machines that get caught on the envelopes sometimes. Then I noticed that the opened mail were envelopes that looked like greeting card types. I called Norfolk Post Office again, and they told me to call the PostMaster in Millis about it. He said he would make note of it, but that sometimes the machines get caught... I said it appeared to only be on personal greeting card envelopes?? He said the mail goes to a couple of different routes before it is sorted in Millis. • 10/31 2:22pm   As of 5:00 pm [Tue 10/30] there is one neighborhood with 142 houses without power and according to NSTAR "a crew will be on sight within the hour to restore power". Given that the town will be back to 100% power, I believe that Halloween should go on as planned. Of course, adultst should supervise their children for safety issues and make sure their property is safe.
    Have fun.

  • 10/31 2:08pm   LD, sorry to hear your story but we had a similar thing happen to us - mail was taken out of our mailbox and when they saw that no money was in the condolence cards I was mailing the mail was dropped in the road around the corner. It was returned to us by the police the next day! Lesson is: don't leave mail in your box overnight or the derelict kids will take it looking for money. So very sad.

    Potential impacts of Sandy include:

Winds: Damaging winds and associated widespread power outages are likely. Wind damage may be exacerbated in southern New England as most trees still have foliage at this time of year. Inland Massachusetts could experience sustained 30-40 mph winds with gusts of 50-60 mph. beginning Monday morning. The Massachusetts coastline will see winds of 40-50 mph with gusts 60-80 mph beginning in late Sunday night and early Monday morning.

Rainfall: Massachusetts can expect 1 -3 inches of rainfall Sunday night through Wednesday with locally higher amounts of 3-5 inches possible, especially in the Berkshires and Worcester Hills. Rain is expected to begin Sunday night and potentially last through mid-week.

The State Emergency Operations Center has activated to Level 2 (Full)as of 9:00 a.m. on Sunday morning, and will expand activation to a Level 1 (Highest) on Sunday night.

Hurricane Preparedness Tips for the General Public:
    * Finish your preparedness activities today:
    * Be sure to have a well-stocked Family Disaster Kit in the event you lose power or are isolated for a number of days.
    * Clear clogged rain gutters. This storm brings the potential for torrential rain. Providing clear drainage will help prevent misdirected flooding.
    * Secure outdoor items such as lawn furniture, trash barrels, hanging plants, decorations, toys and awnings that can be broken or picked up by strong winds and potentially become a projectile.
    * Elevate articles in your basement that could be damaged from even minor flooding.
    * Keep your vehicles fully fueled.
    * Have a certain amount of cash available. If power is lost, ATMs may not be working.
    * Stay informed by monitoring the storm via the media.
    * Plan to stay safely indoors throughout the course of the storm, beginning Sunday night and through Tuesday morning. Ensure your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors have fresh batteries and are operable.
    * If you use a generator, be sure to operate it outdoors or in a well-ventilated area. Be sure to shut off your main power supply to your home when running your generator.
    * Do not use gas stoves or candles as heat or light sources.
    * Heed guidance and directives from your local officials.

  • 10/29 4:37pm   So I walk out to the mailbox on Saturday afternoon to pick up the mail I neglected to retrieve on Friday, and what do I find? Three opened Halloween cards that my mother-in-law from CT mailed to my kids. She stuffed $10 cash inside each one. The cards of course were empty. Someone had actually driven up to the mailbox overnite looking for holiday cards, and scored when the got to my house. Stealing from kids?! What kind of person would do this? I live on Berkshire St.
Anyone else have a similar experience? With more holidays coming up, there will likely be plenty more opportunity for these thieves, so make sure you pick up your mail everyday.
Btw, I called the police and was asked to come down to make a report.

  • 10/28 6:48pm   To AL, we have a Landice Treadmill, but the company from which we bought it went out of business. There is a dealer for this product in Natick, MA that carries other brands as well. There is also a company called Precision Fitness in Natick from which we purchased an exercise bike and they were nice to deal with and have some decent quality products. Not sure what brands of treadmill they carry. We had a Trotter for years but swtiched to Landice because it was the only treadmill that allowed viewing of our television while on it AND it had one of the best warranties on the motor that we could find. We had gone through a couple of motors on the Trotter and when looking at a 600$ repair bill--ouch! We did have the Trotter for over 18 years. You get what you pay for with a good treadmill. I guess you have to determine how the treadmill will be used and if you are committed to staying with using it--then make your investment accordingly. Our Landice is about 3 years old now. Perhaps there are some newer, less expensive options today. The only thing I do not like about the Landice is that we got a special shock absorbing belt, and it sheds a black residue that I am vacuuming up every few weeks at the back of the unit.

  • 10/28 6:31pm   Indiana Jones of Norfolk - Maybe you all would like a chuckle...
We spotted an artifact at the bottom of a Norfolk pond this summer. We discussed how we might be able to raise this heavy stone obelisk, with equipment etc. Now the water was so very low and with the storm coming perhaps it would be silted in and lost, at least until warmer weather next spring. Pondering our eminent wealth and possible legal complications selling such an important monolith, we struck out today with straps and hoisting gear and I myself braved the murky depths to shackle the beast. Well it came up slowly and a bit too lightly. We were planning to rub the engravings and call the radio-carbon testing lab. We surfaced a very neat carved tree stump. My rather buoyant son immediately determined it was, in fact, the very first tree ever placed on earth and subsequently chopped down. Priceless family time - we celebrated over ice cream at Nicky's Place.

  • 10/26 1:15pm   DAN WINSLOW HATES POTHOLES AND POOR ROADS
And He Has a Plan to Reduce Them in Massachusetts
NORFOLK (October 24, 2012)-- State Representative Dan Winslow (R-Norfolk) today released a video where he blasts the poor condition of Massachusetts roads and proposes that road construction specifications be updated for local roads to last 20 years or longer between repaving. "I hate potholes," said Winslow, " and we don't need to have as many on our roads as we do." "It's embarrassing that the quality of highways increases as soon as you hit the border with most of our neighboring states. Taxpayers pay good money and rightly expect good roads and they're not getting value for their dollar."
In the video, www.danwinslow.com/commonsense, which is posted on Winslow's campaign website, the Norfolk Republican calls for transportation infrastructure that is worthy of the tax dollars we're already spending in Massachusetts. "Massachusetts is home to some of the best minds in materials science in the world, yet we use road specifications more suited to the 1950's than the 21st century. Simply by changing the specifications for road construction in Massachusetts to equal or exceed the best specifications of other cold weather states, we can significantly improve our roads. And, because labor is the most expensive part of any road project, we'll be getting more bang for our buck when roads last longer."
"Some people have expressed a concern to me that we'll lose construction jobs if our roads last longer. That's nonsense. If by the grace of God we managed to repave every road in Massachusetts before the next 20 years, we can redo the sidewalks," said Winslow. "There's plenty of work to do and plenty of good construction jobs that are needed to do it."
Winslow plans to file budget amendments to next year's state budget to require that state spending for roads only be spent on roads that last 20 years or longer using updated construction specifications and best practices for materials.

  • 10/26 11:00am
    Dear Friend,

I want to share my latest video with you about potholes.

The Massachusetts state law specifies how to build our roads using inferior products and processes, so our pavement does not last as long as it does in other countries or even other states. The regulations have not kept up with the times, so when we build our roads we are using outdated inferior products and processes.

    Watch the video here

    http://www.danwinslow.com/commonsense/

We need to bring more commonsense to the Commonwealth. Please share on Facebook and tweet this video to help us spread the word.

    Thanks,

    Dan

  • 10/22 5:42pm   My husband and I are debating between whether to use daycare or have an au pair when our twins are born. I was wondering if there are others in town who have or have had an au pair and if you would be willing to e-mail me about your experience: which au pair agency did you use, what are the pros and cons of having an au pair etc., and would you be willing to answer any questions I may have? • 10/22 5:41pm   Hi! I noticed that Mark McGuckian posted recently about his carpentry services and I wanted to let everyone know that I have used him in the past and he did a fantastic job and I highly recommend him. We needed to have all of the wood around our windows as well as the roof over a bay window completely replaced. He worked efficiently and neatly and I thought what he charged was more than reasonable. I have also seen some of his other carpentry work - a porch he built that looks amazing! When I can afford to have more home projects done, I will definitely give him a call.

  • 10/20 8:00pm   EL, FPG, and any other interested parties...
First off, I am not the MG that commented negatively about Norfolk Town Pizza. I love it there!
I would like to address EL's slander of my daycare that I chose to close myself. The state DID NOT tell me to close. I am disturbed that you are making assumptions and spreading rumors just as FPG did. I chose to close my daycare because I moved into a new neighborhood and one neighbor in particular seemed really irritated by my home based business. This neighbor called the licensor with fictitious stories about me and another daycare on the street. I was in school at the time for an unrelated field of study and I was almost done. I simply decided to close since I didn't want issues with the neighbors and I was almost done with school. I also opted to close because my own children had simply had enough of the business in their house. It was an extremely difficult and sad decision for me and I miss the children and parents very much. When I closed, I referred my families to only 2 providers in town. One is the woman that everyone is ranting about and the other no longer provides child care in her home. If you really did your research, you would see that my daycare and the two providers I recommended to my parents were the daycares with waiting lists in town. That in fact says everything about the services we all provided. I resent your insinuations and hope that everyone can start acting like adults and stop hiding behind a computer keyboard.
Lastly, Norfolk is a small town. I find it truly sad that people are using Norfolknet to slander other people. I am not just referring to the daycare but other businesses as well. We are all struggling to make ends meet and provide for our families and we should be supportive of one another. As we all know, Norfolk has very few businesses of its own. We should absolutely be supporting ALL the big and small businesses within our town; if for no other reason... revenue.

  • 10/20 7:56pm   Well JT It's a state report, so chances are its all true. And instead of teaching your children to say nice things, they should learn the lesson. "if you break the law, like your child care provider, then you will get caught, like your child care provider."
She broke the law and that's it, I don't understand why people keep coming on here to defend her, I understand some of you might have children who attend that daycare. So maybe next time you are looking for childcare, instead of going for the cheaper option, which she was. Do a little more research about the place. So JT, your made a bad choice when you selected that day care. So maybe next you won't

  • 10/18 2:20am   From what I understand, an acquaintance of ours in town was a victim of an even more recent break-in on Monday. These are a new set of thieves (different from the pair caught red handed a couple weeks ago). Our friend reported that around 1 pm, her neighbor spotted a suspicious looking white, tan or grey SUV with a black lab sticker on the left back windshield parked in front of their house. A person was in the passenger seat of the vehicle, apparently while the driver was robbing our friend's house.
Residents should stay aware and vigilant. Report suspicious vehicles or activity to the police as soon as possible.

  • 10/18 1:35am   Town of Norfolk Annual Seasonal Flu Clinic!
The Norfolk Board of Health and Council on Aging, in conjunction with the Walpole Area Visiting Nurse Association, is sponsoring its annual seasonal Flu Clinic for Norfolk residents on Tuesday, November 6, 2012 from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m., at the Senior Center, located at 28 Medway Branch Road.
The seasonal flu vaccine will be available for adults at highest risk of complications from the flu only. High-risk categories include:
    1. all adults age 65 and older
    2. adults under 65 included only if they:
    3. have a chronic cardiac (heart) or pulmonary (lung) disease, including asthma
    4. required regular medical follow-up or hospitalization in the past year because of chronic metabolic disease (such as diabetes), kidney dysfunction or blood disorders
    5. immune system problems, such as HIV or other immunosuppression caused by disease, medication, radiation or chemotherapy
    6. women who will be in their second or third trimester of pregnancy, but only with a letter from their obstetrician requesting the flu vaccine
Being high risk does not mean that you are at increased risk of exposure to the flu. High risk means that you are at higher risk to have serious complications from the flu.
You must call the Council on Aging office at 508-528-4430 to schedule an appointment for the flu clinic due to the limited amount of vaccine that we are receiving.

  • 10/18 1:29am   I remember being taught the basic safety rules of the road in elementary school. My 2 elementary age children had no idea which side to walk on and ride a bike on until I told them, not that they often do on the street unsupervised but something taught young sticks with you as an adult. I suppose why some dont know the rules is if you were brought up in a city it would basically be irrelevent but good to know anyway.

  • 10/18 1:28am   I've heard that mid-day home break-ins continue to plague Norfolk, Franklin, Walpole and Medfield. • 10/18 1:27am   That's right LD!
It's troubling to see all of Norfolk slipping to the absolute bottom of Maslow's Hierarchy and into the realm of snarling hyena-amoebas fighting over food (pizza) and make-believe problems with their children (daycare), the basics of physiology, instead of more abstract and self-actualized thought (taxes, unions).
What will you say at the Pearly Gates when St. Peter denounces you? (Rev. 21:21) Sorry! But my pizza was cold!

  • 10/18 1:15am   On Saturday, October 13th, Norfolk residents Wayne Travis, Sarojit Malik, and Patrick Touhey attended Herb Chambers' final ``Cars & Coffee'' of the season at Lexus of Sharon, an early morning meet up of classic, vintage and specialty cars from all over New England. Car enthusiasts are invited to gather at the dealership, and showcase their pride and joys while admiring the prized hardware of other automotive fanatics. Chambers has always looked to gather people who are passionate about cars in one location, grab a cup of coffee and exchange stories of what makes their unique car so special to them. Special guest Wayne Carini, host of Chasing Classic Cars was also at the event.

  • 10/18 1:13am   To those looking for help with their trees, especially pruning-you can't put a limb back. There is considerable skill and science associated with this art. You can find a Mass. Certified Arborist (MCA) here: www.certifiedtreeandlawn.org/ctl_search.cgi
As for Norfolk Pizza, the same person who makes the food isn't supposed to be handling money. Last time I was there, the guy made the sub and then with the same "sanitary" gloves on, took my money and ran the register. Then he went back to making food after touching the register keys and money! Never went back. Yuck.

  • 10/18 12:42am   DH, how do you know what was written in that report was fact? Just because a person from ECC says something doesn't make it fact. I was a daycare parent of children in that daycare that day. I know for a fact that many things in that report were not true, since I was in there that morning and most days during the week. I do not doubt the care my children received there. Who are you to keep trying to throw a person who has dedicated her life to children under the bus? You shouldn't worry about what others have done unless you are some angel. As a matter of fact, of those kids who got off the bus, one of those children were her own, and seven of the children left within 10 minutes of the bus pulling up. Who are you to judge unless you were there. You don't know the circumstances. Why don't you mind your business because those kids, including my own, were taken well care of. They were all loved and cared for and taught so much. It has been a nightmare trying to replace the quality of care my children received there. Remember if you don't have something nice to say, you shouldn't say it. I know my kids learned that lesson there.

  • 10/15 6:35pm   The Massachusetts Dept. of Early Education & Care recently held a seminar and commented on the daycare that was shut down in Norfolk. The officals that spoke were the ones that shut down the daycare. The violations are now a matter of public record that anyone can obtain so that any speculation can be put to rest. Here are the facts:
The provider was not on the premises when the state arrived. She arrived by herself in a car when the state was already there. She told the State "that she was not working that day." Upon entering the home 9 children were found in a room with an unlicensed assistant. 5 more children were found in another room with an unlicensed assistant a baby was found sleeping by itself unsupervised in another room. The provider had no paperwork on any of the children which is a State requirement. Lastly, as the State is trying to sort all this out, the bus pulls up with another 7 children (none of which were her own 3 children) which brings the total of children on the premises to 22 for someone who is licensed for 10 children. There were several more other issues as well but, you get the point. Yes, the State will try to work with you on minor infractions but if the children are in jeopardy they can immediately suspend a license, which is what happened in this case.

  • 10/15 6:32pm   The Norfolk Fire Department, under near perfect skies, invited the community to the Annual Open House this past Saturday. Hundreds of families attended to meet their firefighters, inspect fire equipment and watch the firefighters perform rescue skills.
Each year the Open House can trace its success to the wonderful people who own the community's restaurants. Their contributions of pizzas, made right here in our community, demonstrate the true spirit of Norfolk, helping each other.

  • 10/12 11:22pm   Hi All. Just wanted to share these basic safety reminders for those who walk on the streets of Norfolk. We have narrow, winding streets in our town, most with no sidewalks, and darkness is starting to set in earlier so remember...
To stay safe walking, follow these rules of the road:
Walk Facing Traffic: If there is no sidewalk and you must walk on the side of the road, choose the side where you are facing oncoming traffic. In North America, this is the left side of the road. This gives you the best chance to see traffic approaching closest to you and take evasive action when needed. Never walk with your back to oncoming traffic.
Walk Single File: Unless you are on a sidewalk, you should walk in single file. This is especially important on a road with lots curves, where traffic has only a split second chance of seeing you before hitting you. While it can be enjoyable to walk down the road two to three abreast chatting merrily, drivers don't expect it and you may lose your best walking buddies.
Be Visible: When walking at night, wear light-colored clothing and reflective clothing or a reflective vest to be visible. Drivers are often not expecting walkers to be out after dark, and you need to give them every chance to see you. Be just as cautious at dawn or twilight, as drivers still have limited visibility or may even have the setting or rising sun directly in their eyes.
Hang Up and Walk: Chatting on a cell phone while you walk is as dangerous as chatting while driving. You are distracted and not as aware of your environment. You are less likely to recognize traffic danger, passing joggers and bikers or tripping hazards.
I was moved to share these reminders because of recent experiences. Several times over the past few weeks I've driven up behind people walking two or more abreast with their backs to my vehicle, completely unaware that there was traffic on the road. I had to come to a stop until they moved over & allowed me to pass. They even seemed startled when they turned around to see my car behind them. Had they been facing traffic properly, they would have been much more aware of the oncoming traffic. Yesterday this happened with a woman pushing a double stroller. Let's all remember these basic rules so we can all get out and enjoy the beautiful fall weather safely!

Norfolk Girls Softball Board meets the first week of every month in the evenings (meeting start at 7:30 PM).

NGS also offers winter softball clinics, as well as pitching and catching instruction. The response to these expanded offerings has been strong. • 10/12 10:11pm   AB - Religious intolerance isn't even in my vocabulary. I deal with all peoples, all religions and I respect them all, and have worked with them all. What I despise are religions that think they are superior, which defeats their purpose, which is to help all peoples help each other. But "superior" religions are nothing but cults and are the cause of a lot of the troubles in the world by bigotry and divide people into warring factions. All religions are equal and all ridiculous to me and should act as equals.
But, God Bless you All, if there is a God, and keep up the name calling, AB, as I just like getting under your skin, as I always have! (A Big Holy Kiss Here)

  • 10/12 9:58pm   Hi there, to JK, I would recommend Workout World in the old Bradlee's plaza in Foxboro. They keep the place and equipment clean and new at all times. They are open 24/7/365 They have all kinds of exercise classes. The classes are good and the price per month is cheap.
To Lei Dong, welcome to town. I can't wait to try your food. I don't know what happened to the previous owners there, their food was terrific. I hope you make a great go of it.
To the folks having a back and forth about Nick's. I love Nick, his food and his family and other employees. I haven't seen Nick lately. I think he might be visiting Greece again. The older man who worked there for years died earlier this year. He was Nick's uncle, also named Nick. One of the guys, does indeed come across a bit gruff at times. Don't let him fool you. Indeed many people have compared him to the soup Nazi from Seinfeld. He is a very nice guy. If you came in with a credit card, not knowing of their $8 minimum policy, you could easily tell him you didn't know, that you live in town and that you will come back later or tomorrow. They do that for people all the time. A few times, they have even for no reason told me I come in all the time and wouldn't take any money, gruffly saying meal's on me. Their food is great and they are part of our great town. Give them the benefit of the doubt. They have good days, bad days, hectic days and yes even days where they have a death in the family and perhaps there is a reason for a frown. I know in a perfect world, service should come with a smile, but the world is very often not perfect in my humble opinion.

  • 10/12 8:55pm   How many times have you been watching your child play in a T-Ball/Little League/Babe Ruth game and said to your spouse/friend/neighbor, "You know what they should do, ..."? Well, here's a perfect opportunity for your opinion to be heard.
On Sunday October 14th, the Norfolk Baseball Association will be holding an Open House starting at 7:30 pm in the Norfolk Public Library. We have two main goals for the open house:
    * Reflection on the 2012 Spring and Summer Seasons: We'd like to get our report card for 2012 and better understand what went well, what didn't go well and what can we improve upon for 2013. Don't like how we run our AAA or Major Leagues? Come and tell us. Have ideas on how to make Babe Ruth better? Come and tell us. Don't like the colors of our T-Ball uniforms or want to see a new Slush-Puppy flavor in the concession stand? Come and tell us. We want feedback on everything. Please, come on down and share with us your thoughts to make Norfolk Baseball a better experience for your children.
    * Board Elections and Appointments: At the open house we'll be electing and appointing our board members for the 2013 season. These are the folks that administer and run our baseball programs, from T-Ball through Babe Ruth, spring and summer. We're always looking for "new blood" and folks with fresh ideas to improve our baseball programs.
We've scheduled the open house to start at 7:30 pm so you'll be able to see the Patriots trounce Seattle and then you can join us in the library. We'll even supply the refreshments!
Don't be shy and keep all those good ideas bottled up! Looking forward to seeing you on the 14th!
    - David Lannigan, Commissioner, Norfolk Baseball Association

  • 10/12 8:53pm   I have 5 boulders that I need moved about 50 feet from my front yard to my stone wall on the side of the yard. Too big to just roll them using a pinch bar. Any recommendations? They are about the size of a large trash barrel.

  • 10/12 8:52pm   TM, I'm so glad this cat is ok! He lived in our storage tent for a few weeks, then disappeared. I was feeding him, and put a notice in this forum, like you have, but got no response. Maybe he's a "drop-off".

  • 10/9 12:42pm   I am sure if we were to hear from the folks who run the pizza shop in town they could set the record straight that they put up with a LOT of rude and non-smiling customers looking back at them!!! Just try doing their job for a day and see what THEY put up with from the other side of the counter. Are they getting treated with the common courtesy they are entitled to also?
Boy, with all the troubles in this world, this issue seems so insulting to even be going on and on about. You know how nice living in Norfolk really is in comparison to living in even some towns nearby? The next generation could have it tougher, so maybe a little bit of the "real world" is alright for them to see; let's set the example for them, please.

  • 10/6 4:04pm   In response to BP's message about Norfolk Pizza... Are you not aware of the "rules" of customer service? Anyone involved in customer service should be smiling, at a minimum. First of all it is it common courtesy and it also helps if you are interested in having a good reputation, not to mention a repeat customer base. Being courtesy and saying "Thank you" after a transaction doesn't hurt either!!!
If you continue to frequent a business that treats you in an unfriendly or rude manner that is your prerogative, even though I do not understand why you would even if the food is good or cheap. You should expect more from the businesses that you frequent, they should be working to attract and maintain you as a customer/patron. That includes treating you like a human being and communicating with you as such.
Thank you and have a nice day...

  • 10/6 1:56am   Are we really complaining about a pizza place? Think about it, the people that work there have to prep the food, cook the food, collect the money, answer the phones, take walk in orders, and clean the cook area.
Ever been there on a Friday night in Lent when the train comes in? I did... once. While doing this work they are on their feet, not sitting down at a desk. It is not fine dining, it is take out.
Do you smile when you go in and ask how their day is going? Try it once, the answer may surprise you. Maybe they don't talk because they are tired of people asking them to repeat themselves. Noise and accents will effect what you hear. If you want to have someone comment on your nice looking suit or your new hair cut and talk to you for 15 minutes about the horrible season the Red Sox had, go to a sit-down restaurant. If you want good food, hot and fast go to Nick's. Yes the formal name if Town Pizza but the sign also says Nick's. The staff there work their butts off to give you your food, do you take the 5 seconds required to smile and say thank you? Maybe the person before you was nasty.
As for speaking to each other in Greek, I have no problem with that because it is their native language and they speak to me in English. Do you have the same problem with the convenience stores because their employees are Indian? I bet if you went to pick up your order and the cashier was chatting with the person in front of you, then you would be tapping your toe wanting to be waited on. Get a grip people, Nick has been in this town for years doing a great job and serving hot and tasty food. My only complaint is the parking. Bon Appetit.

Either way, why bring their background into a customer service discussion. I am not willing to generalize about Greek people, nor Americans, the same way you are. I feel it is only appropriate to leave race, religion, sexual preference, socio-economic status, country of origin, etc. out of these discussions. That kind of thinking only serves to further divide us. Similar to a Dover comparison.

  • 10/2 8:58pm   To the two ladies walking the small white dog around Keeney Pond this [Monday] morning who, oh so politely, shouted at me from 100 feet away to "keep walking"... I am not Miss Manners, but please let me suggest a few ways that normal folks would have instigated that interaction:
    1. Hey, is your dog friendly?
    2. Would you mind stepping aside? We'd like to pass and we are nervous about your dog.
    3. Excuse us.
If you hadn't been so scared to get closer to me and my "intimidating looking dog", aka, a pit bull mix, you would have discovered that the reason why he was looking over his shoulder at you all is because he loves making new friends and see if maybe, just maybe someone has a treat they'd like to share with him, not tear your pup into pieces.
And yes, we took a couple of breaks going up the hill because 1. he had to relieve himself and 2. I had a child 6 weeks ago and am not in my pre-baby shape quite yet. In the 5 years my family and I have lived here, I'm lucky to have made a great group of friends who aren't scared to let their little children and dogs near him just because they've heard stories about the breed. I hope we run into you again tomorrow so we can try this the right way. You can even shout at me using my name, it's Tanja.

  • 10/2 8:53pm   To FGP: I am compelled to respond to your comment, "I thought it was about the children being safe and not the feelings of a provider. So don't be angry at the person who is trying to speak for the safety of all children...If I'm the only person willing to speak out for the children, so be it. I will always try my best to put safety first!!"
Your comment strikes me as extremely condescending Most (if not all) of us commenting on this issue are parents ourselves. We may not all be daycare providers but we are all caring adults who love our children and are concerned about the safety of children everywhere. Your comment was designed to place yourself on a high horse, and imply that you know more/care more than the rest of us do. That is incorrect. You do not love your children any more than I do mine. Additionally, I had children at this daycare. You did not.
Concocting a scenario designed to create the impression that dozens of children were squeezed into an unsafe situation does not make it fact. I personally do not equate two school-aged children getting off the bus at her house with being over by dozen extra toddlers, which is the kind of picture you are trying to paint. This is a false equivalency.
So my question is, why are you doing this? I can only assume that you considered this daycare a competitor and you are happy to no longer have the competition. Or you are carrying some other kind of sour grapes. You should know that your comments here are not placing you in a favorable light.
    Respectfully,

  • 10/2 8:42pm   P. B. called my office at Ring Plumbing and Heating, Inc. on September 11, 2012, in regards to a heat leak at his residence, I explained my terms to him personally over the phone to where he requested our service for the repair. Then upon arrival we had PB sign our invoice and a written copy of our terms before we entered his residence which are both attached below for all to see. After our field diagnosis of what PB thought was his leak we assured him that there was absolutely nothing leaking.
Mistakenly, even after I explained our terms over the phone before dispatching a technician, as well as signing 2 separate documents explaining our terms before entering PB's residence, PB [mistakenly] assumed there would be no service charge. Once again PB is wrong, wrong about a leak in his heating system to begin with and wrong about assuming there was no service charge. I will be filing a small claims against PB and fully expect to be reimbursed once the Clerk Magistrate hears this case. Please! Anybody who would expect AT NO CHARGE a fully insured Licensed Plumber with a registered and insured truck, equipped with tools and materials to accommodate most any service call, again please, don't call Ring Plumbing and Heating, Inc.
    Thank You,
    - Gary J. Ring (President) www.RingPlumbing.com

[I received the invoice as well but wasn't comfortable posting it with a full name, phone and home address. It was dated 9-11-12. - Wm.]

  • 10/2 8:39pm   DWL - After rereading your post a few more times I have a couple more observations. You clearly imply that "It's a Pizza Place", in a way that suggest that we should not expect basic friendliness. I am not willing to disparage Pizza Places as broadly as you are. They are all worthy of high customer service expectations. You make them sound like junk yards with that line of thinking.
Also, why do you choose to pick on and disparage the people of Dover? I have only met nice folks from Dover, sorry that you have not had the same experience. Also, the most I have ever had to do with Dover is driving through it, or going to sporting events there. I am a person who has lived locally for over forty years, so please don't insult me as if I have these crazy ideas about being polite to customers. As I said - it is only recently that this service has changed!
LS: it is funny, because I actually thought of that exact Seinfeld episode when the topic came up. People were willing to put up with the "Soup Nazi" because he cornered the market on good soup in that neighborhood. I am willing to work with the new Pizza people because they do make a great product and are the only game in our part of town.

  • 10/2 8:38pm   I have an au pair through the AuPairCare Agency. Are there any other au pairs in Norfolk from one of the other agencies? My au pair would love to meet au pairs that are close by (the others she has met are further away).

  • 10/2 8:37pm   Norfolk Girls Softball is looking to fill a number of board positions this year and we need help from our community.
Please join us on Tuesday October 16, 2012 at 7:30pm at the H. Olive Day Library (door #3) to learn about the open board positions and to see how you can help our organization.
The commitment level varies for each board position. Most meetings are held the first week of every month in the evenings (meeting start at 7:30 PM). Do you have a special skill or interest? If so, there are many opportunities to assist and support the organization outside a role on the Board. Come and learn about those opportunities too. We will hold board elections at the end of this meeting and everyone is encouraged to participate.
New this year, we are waiving all softball fees for NGS Board Members.
We need your support. Without it, NGS is at risk of a reducing programs offered.
Norfolk Girls Softball currently offers a Spring Recreational League, travel teams in the summer and fall, winter softball clinics, and pitching and catching instruction. The participation in these offerings has been very strong. However, without the continued active participation from parents in the Norfolk Girls Softball organization and community members, we may not be able to continue to offer all the programs going forward.
We look forward to seeing you on the 16th!

  • 10/2 8:36pm   Hello, my name is Danielle G and I am looking for babysitting clients. I am 16 years old and a Junior at King Philip High School, I also live in Norfolk. I do not have my license yet, I am legal to get it in January which means until January I may need rides to or from your house, unless if you live close to me I can just walk there.
My experience: I have been babysitting since I was in the 8th grade, so for about 4 years. I am also teaching 4th grade CCD this year. I have had a lot of random jobs and one family who I have been babysitting their kids for 4 years. I also have a 3 year old nephew who I usually watch once or twice a week. I have experience with every age from an infant to a 10 year old, so I know how to do everything such as diapers and bottle care for young kids. Also, if you have any pets such as a dog, I am fine with that. I love animals so I wouldn't mind to have them there, and I could also take care of them.
Pay: I charge anywhere from $5 to $8 an hour, it depends how many children the client has. Honestly, I am very flexible with how much the client pays me, whatever works for them works for me.
Availability: During the school week I am available any day after school (2:15) except for Wednesday because I watch my nephew that day and I teach CCD that day, to about 9:00pm On the weekend I am available at anytime.
Contact: You can call or text my cell phone: 1-508-341-5261 or you can email me: xdaniellee8546x@aol.com

  • 10/2 8:34pm   To DWL : BP and CS were sharing their opinion just like you and I are. Guess what, I am not from Dover, have been living in Norfolk for several years, and I agree with them. The customer service, not to mention the overall cleanliness of the place, is below standards on every account and that is why I stopped going there. Maybe it is a cultural thing, but the adult employees there need to show a little more respect to their customers and maybe throw in a please or thank you once in awhile. Until then, I will be taking my business elsewhere, regardless of whether it is "just a pizza place."

  • 10/2 8:12pm   PRB, are you kidding? You call the plumber and he came to your home and you're not happy about the bill? Most service contractors charge a 2-hour minimum for service call, and if they aren't, they are cheating themselves.
Think about it, he has a phone service and spent time talking about the problem with you, then planned a trip to your house, went to your house, diagnosed the problem and was honest about it with you and drove back to his place of business, then spent time in the office to invoice you. He has a very expensive work truck with expensive tools; gas is $4 a gallon, vehicle insurance, liability insurance, etc. I think you should be happy that you found an honest contractor and pay the bill. Believe me he spent more than 5 minutes on your problem.

  • 10/2 8:09pm   DWL - Relax. Norfolk Pizza makes excellent food, and I have also enjoyed going there for years. As I wrote, I will also keep going there. It is, however, absolutely true that a couple of employees do not share the warm attitude that I have been used to for years. I am not into censoring opinions to avoid your type of reaction, and most business owners appreciate direct feedback. Did you consider that?
