  • 9/30 8:16pm   AB-G, Sorry someone stole your husbands dolly. There are guys that just drive around all day long looking for quick grabs like your husbands dolly. I could go on and on with stories about these crack heads but, I'll just tell you this one. My mother-in-law had an aluminum ladder beside her house and a guy in a van pulled in and proceeded to load it on his van. Fortunately she was home at the time. She opened the door and yelled at him to put it back. He had his story all set too. "I must have the wrong house. I'm supposed to pick up a ladder for so and so." She asked him what address he was looking for. Funny thing is, he didn't even know what street he was on. These guys are driving around looking for anything metal that they can run to the scrap yard for a few bucks for their crack fix. I told my mother-in-law she should have written down his license plate and called the police. He probably stole someone else's ladder that day.

  • 9/30 8:15pm   RM, If I'm having a fire in my woodstove in my house, should I call the fire department first? What if I'm just using some wood chips in my grill to smoke some steaks, should I call the fire department first? Lowe's, Home Depot and every hardware store in the country sell firepits for the backyard fire. Not to mention the block and patio companies that sell the backyard pits. Maybe some common sense before you call the fire department would apply here?

  • 9/30 8:13pm   Good evening, I was looking to see if you could guide us in the right direction as to obtaining a rental home in Norfolk. My family is from Norfolk, and we resided in the town last year, however the home we rented was then put up for sale. We love the town and do not want to find a new home town. We are a family of 4 and would require 3+ bedroom. Please assist us, as we absolutely love this town and want to stay here. We would be fore ever grateful for your assistance. We are a professional couple with 2 children already enrolled in the Norfolk school.system, we are gainfully employed and make great tenants. We look forward to hearing back from you at your earliest convenience.

  • 9/30 8:12pm   What is everyone's thought on KP Middle and High School? it is clearly over crowded. We moved to Norfolk for the love of the small town feel, not to send our kids to a tri town regional school that is over crowded. I was interested in knowing how everyone feels and who would be in favor of pulling out of KP and having our own HS/MS? I know that one of the towns in the Silver Lake regional (Kingston, Pembroke, not sure but that area) pulled out. Thank you for your opinion.

  • 9/25 9:53pm   For GC: It was my understanding that there will be docs' offices there and not an urgent care center. This I learned a few months ago through the EDC. The marijuana distribution center would have to be in another part of town, I'm sure.

  • 9/25 9:45pm   Norfolk - ``The past is history, the present is now, and the future is history waiting to happen'' is how Katie McMahon introduced The History Wall at Freeman-Kennedy School on Friday, September 13, 2013. The purpose of The History Wall is to preserve and honor the history of the Norfolk Schools. The History Wall contains a timeline of the schools in Norfolk from 1852 to present and plaques containing the biographies of those for whom spaces have been named within the Norfolk schools.
Katie McMahon and Eleanor Spellman, members of Norfolk Girl Scout Troop 3616, worked on this project for their Girl Scout Silver Award. The Silver Award is the highest award Girls Scout Cadettes can earn and requires a 50 hour service project that will benefit the community. The girls worked with school officials to interview honorees and family members, wrote the biographies, planned the space, researched and designed the plaques, and ran fundraisers to complete this project. The girls are 2011 graduates of the former Freeman-Centennial school and were concerned about preserving and passing along the history of their former schools to current and future students. Both girls are currently freshman at King Philip High School. They have been members of Troop 3616 since kindergarten.
The History Wall at Freeman-Kennedy school was presented at an all school assembly, followed by the unveiling and reception for invited guests. Invited guests include state and local officials, school officials, and honoreesand their family members. The girls created a powerpoint presentation with photos and facts for each of the school buildings and the 10 honorees that played throughout the ceremony to educate the students. Speakers included State Senator Richard Ross, Legislative Aide Liz Bugee from Representative Daniel Winslow'soffice, Norfolk Selectman Chair Rob Garrity, Norfolk School Committee Chair Shawn Dooley, Norfolk School Superintendent Dr. Ingrid Allardi, Freeman-Kennedy Principal Lisa Altham-HIckey as well as Katie McMahon and Eleanor Spellman. Senator Ross presented the girls with citations from the State House.
This program was funded in part by a grant from the Norfolk Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency. In addition, Norfolk Community League supported this project with a grant.
During their speeches, both girls recognized the assistance from Principal Lisa Altham-Hickey and teacher Bonnie O'Connell who worked with the girls over the past year.
Eleanor Spellman summed up their enthusiasm for the project in her speech "We learned what most of the people on the wall believed - that using your time and efforts for the good of others is not always easy, but the right thing to do".

  • 9/25 3:17pm   For DT and JW: if you look at it from the fire department's perspective, it is probably not too much to ask that they receive a phone call for any fire that might prompt a neighbor's phone call. They are really not in a position to disregard the call or assume that it's someone's cooking fire. I wonder how often it happens.

  • 9/21 3:57pm   JW, We had the same thing happen to us. We moved into our house in May 2005. I had to clear a lot of my property and we would have small fires ocassionally in a fire pit. In August 2005 a new neighbor moved in down the street and called the fire dept. saying they smelled smoke. The fire dept. was driving up and down the street for 20 minutes before a truck pulled in my driveway and found my small "cooking fire". They asked that I call and tell them when I was having a fire. So for the next month and a half I would call almost every night and would tell them I was having a fire and even give them the menu for the evening. Then they started asking when I expected it would be out. That's when I stopped calling. I think they were sick of me anyway. I've showed 2 firemen my pit out back, which is enclosed with brick and surrounded at least 10 feet around with gravel and a hose spigot not more than 20 feet away. They still say I should call. I just keep the grill for the top and a marshmallow stick nearby in case they show up. In Massachusetts you are allowed to have contained cooking fires. I don't think it says you have to call the fire dept. first.

Hi, my name is Albena F. I just wanted to spread the word about the music school on Main St., right across the Bourque restaurant. Great, dedicated teachers; cozy and nice atmosphere - that's just for starters. My girls are finally enthusiastic about music. They get up and play piano(before breakfast)! I don't have to move a finger. I don't know how they do this but whatever they are doing works like magic. P.S. We have tried numerous schools before, and finally one that can get kids thrilled!!! No better i-pad anti-drug so far:-)

  • 9/16 5:20pm   Norfolk Recreation is in the process of evaluating Norfolk's facilities, fields, and programming and we are looking for community input. Our goal is to come up with a 10-year Master Plan to address recreation needs and wants in Norfolk. Community input is essential to the development of a comprehensive and accurate plan. Please let us know your opinion by participating in the Recreation survey found at: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/NorfolkREC. The more input we get, the better grasp we have of the direction all residents want us to take. The survey also addresses the issue of sidewalks in Town... if and where people may want them. Responses to this survey should be completed by October 1. Thank you,
    Ann Proto, Recreation Director, recreation@virtualnorfolk.org, (508) 520-1315.

  • 9/16 5:19pm   Norfolk County Mosquito Control will be spraying the perimeter of the Pond Street Complex on Monday morning. This action was requested due to mosquitos with West Nile recently being found in Wrentham.
Norfolk County Mosquito Control will be driving into the Complex, going around the track, and spraying along the wood/path line into the woods. Although this spraying should help reduce the mosquito population, it should not preclude the importance of using mosquito control products individually and dressing to cover as much skin as possible.

  • 9/16 5:18pm   DR: I tried Scott's lawncare this year and was not satisfied. They came sporadically, sent invoices for the wrong customer, and the grass did not look much better. I had more success when using Scott's products, but applying them myself. Good Luck.

  • 9/16 4:54pm   Regarding the controversial content on Norfolknet: it's not a "discussion" if you're just firing volleys of explosive rhetoric, and not seriously considering the other person's point of view. However, I deeply appreciated, and was moved by the woman's story of her extremely difficult, but necessary choice, because it illuminated the consequences of the law that intruded into her life. So the volleys did have an effect; just not the one intended.

  • 9/10 3:54pm   Norfolk Community League's 2013 Person of the Year
Who do you know that makes Norfolk a better place? Is it your child's coach, a favorite teacher, or a helpful librarian? Maybe it's your neighbor who always goes above and beyond for you and the rest of the community. Perhaps it's someone who continuously donates her or his time, yard, or other talents. Maybe it's someone of the Faith that helps unite the community in times of crisis. Who do you know that makes you love our Town more and more? We know that you're thinking of someone... now tell us about her or him so that we too may honor this person.
In 500 words or less, please submit a summary of what makes this person NCL's 2013 Person of the Year. Entries may be submitted via email at nclpersonoftheyear.2013@gmail.com or in hard copy at the designated envelope located within the Norfolk PublicLibrary. Entries will be accepted beginning September 16th through September 27th. Three entries (as selected by NCL's Board) will then be posted electronically at www.nclgala.com as well as in hard copy at the Library. Vote for your favorite NCL Person of the Year electronically at www.nclgala.com or by submitting your vote in the designated box at the Library. Each Norfolk resident (this includes children) may vote once. Voting will open on October 14th and close at midnight on October 25th.

  • 9/10 3:51pm   On Monday, 16-Sep-2013, from 10:00 AM through 7:00 PM there will be an Online Town Hall on "Veterans' Mental Health". It will be hosted by Congressman Ron Barber (representing Arizona's 2nd district).
The online town hall will be a national conversation in which anyone can participate to discuss veterans' mental health. You can post questions, share your stories, and participate in this online dialogue with the Congressman.
Why a Town Hall on Veterans? Mental Health?
    • Because many of our veterans return home with battle scars that can't be seen
    • Because families and loved ones sometimes don?t know what to say or how to help
    • Because an average of 22 veterans commit suicide every day
    • Because veterans might not know where to find help
    • Because we don't often get the chance to talk about this important public issue civilly and openly online
    • Because there's a lot we can learn from each other
For more information, go to www.creatingcommunitysolutions.org/veterans-mental-health-online-town-hall
You can indicate that you intend to attend on the Facebook page at: www.facebook.com/events/511071275641530/
There are other ongoing national online conversations on mental health at BIT.LY/mentalhealthtalk On 16-Sep-2013, the Online Town Hall on "Veterans' Mental Health" will be there.

  • 9/6 2:40pm   Norfolk Cultural Council seeks funding proposals. Proposals for community - arts, humanities, and science projects due October 15, 2013.
The Norfolk Cultural Council has set Tuesday, October 15, 2013 as the postmark deadline for organizations, schools and individuals to apply for Local Cultural Council grants that support cultural activities in the community.
According to Council spokesperson, Deanna Grimm, these state grants can support a variety of artistic projects and activities in Norfolk - including exhibits, festivals, short-term artists-in residences or performances in schools, workshops and lectures.
The Norfolk Cultural Council will also entertain funding proposals from schools and youth groups through the PASS Program, which provides subsidies for Norfolk school age children to attend cultural field trips.
The Norfolk Cultural Council is part of 329 Local Cultural Councils serving all 351 cities and towns in the Commonwealth. The LCC Program is the largest grassroots cultural funding network in the nation, supporting thousands of community-based projects in the arts, sciences and humanities every year. The state legislature provides an annual appropriation to the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency, which then allocates funds to each community.
For year 2012-13, the Norfolk Cultural Council will have distributed $3,770.00 in grants. Some of the 2013 grants supported by the council included the Norfolk Public Library, Girl Scouts, Stony Brook Wildlife, The Un-Common Theatre, Franklin Performing Arts and the Norfolk Coop Preschool.
For specific guidelines and complete information on the Norfolk Cultural Council (NCC), contact NCC at email address ncc@virtualnorfolk.org. Application forms and more information about the Local Cultural Council Program are available online at www.mass-culture.org/lcc_public.asp. Applications should be complete and signed in order to be processed in a timely manner.

  • 9/4 10:22pm   I haven't been reading the postings lately as it seems like it has turned into a nasty, political and religious debate on a topic that clearly will have differing opinions, and two people who have different opinions on this subject will never agree to either side. (wow - run-on sentence, I know for those who like to correct!)
However, I had to post something that I saw today that made me remember why I am happy and grateful that my children are growing up in Norfolk... I was driving to work down Main St this morning around 6:45 when what did my eyes, and car, suddenly see but a lone white horse meandering dangerously close to the road. I quickly pulled over and called the local PD telling them a horse was loose! How many parents are lucky enough that the biggest problem they encounter on their way to school is an escaped horse??? (I'm thinking of Boston, Springfield, Worcester). As all the children begin the new school year, I want to say thanks to "whoever" that I am blessed enough that I can afford to live in a charming little town like Norfolk :)
Also, a shout out of thanks and good luck to the Norfolk teachers for a great school year! When times get tough in the classroom, and with parents, please remember that to the children you are their sun and moon for the day and all they really want is to be happy and feel secure in school (yes, I AM A SCHOOL SPECIALIST in another town). How the children feel about themselves and learning is, in my opinion, what matters the most.

  • 9/4 10:09pm   I agree with PMM in reference to abortion posts on the NNet that "having a good provocative discussion is healthy," although I found his (her) statement (see 8/24@11:08) that most women who find themselves facing the agonizing decision regarding an abortion choose to undergo one solely because of "convenience" ill-advised, insensitive, and far from provocative. Perhaps, it was just a poor choice of words. Sadly, such a misguided comment almost becomes negligible when compared to the extremist posts of PR and his (her) continuing references to Obama as someone whose stances as a state senator somehow allowed "the killing of a breathing baby outside the womb" or "a second doctor to enter the room and kill a baby who survived an abortion" (see 6/26@11:02pm;7/29@1:28am; 8:14@4:39pm;8:31@7:45am). Such over-the-top hyperbole, no matter where it lands - the main page of this forum or on its political page - demonstrates the worst kind of political rhetoric and intentional distortion. And such blatant misrepresentation should not go unchallenged.
To set the record straight, the proposed legislation apparently referred to in all of these posts - the Born Alive Infants Protection Act, pushed by anti-abortion zealots and correctly voted down more than once by Obama and a majority of his colleagues serving in the Illinois state senate at that time - was, among other things, half-baked and deceptive. In addition, passage of that bill was totally unnecessary as it addressed a medical issue that was on the books and already covered by Illinois state law. So let's call it what it actually was and why it was voted down repeatedly: a legislative attempt that was nothing more than yet another sneaky backdoor strategy to undermine, weaken, or roll back reproductive rights and eventually repeal Roe vs. Wade by members of that curious segment of the population who continue to insist that women are far too stupid to make their own health and reproductive decisions.
Due to their tiresome frequency, pitching myth, misinformation, and pseudoscientific bunk regarding a fetus, as well as employing scare tactics and outright deceptions designed to manipulate the emotions of the uninformed - as annoying as they are these days - have become immediately recognizable and will not discourage, dissuade, or affect the majority who strongly support a woman's right to make her own reproductive decisions when faced with such a complex and painfully difficult decision.
Furthermore, the parroting of extremist commentators, religious tyrants, or misleading political ads (directly responsible for the gross misrepresentations cited above and paid for by Obama opponents in the 2008 presidential campaign) serve little purpose except to confirm that such individuals (including PR who also insists on arrogantly characterizing people supporting candidates different from his own preferences as "low-information voters") are simply the close-minded holders of archaic and misogynistic attitudes toward women and nothing more.
And, finally, thank you, JC, for your extraordinary and moving post of 8/31@7:19am.

  • 9/4 10:07pm   Here's an FYI: My neighbor attempted to buy flooring at Home Depot and have it installed. They delivered the wrong flooring no less than three times. They also delivered the wrong edging at least once. They told him that the UPC was identical on different flooring items. I find that unbelievable, but my neighbor said he saw it himself. He was expecting to have the bamboo floor and the ceramic tile installed before now. He's heading to Lowe's.

  • 8/31 7:27am   Just my opinion, but any topics that are inherently divisive and emotionally charged should be relegated to a different page away from the main page. Any post featuring certain key words such as religious or political terms such as "democrat, republican, abortion, conspiracy, abstinence" etc, should be filtered and relocated. There are a lot of young people that read this board and while I don't believe that we should have completely sheltered naive children, neither should they be bombarded with biased propaganda. • 8/31 7:21am   To those posters who consider themselves to be righteous, card carrying ``pro-life'' super-heros, for whom every life is sacred (except for the mother), and where we have no right to end a life (except for a death row inmate) - I do not believe that you are truly pro-life but pro*-birth*.
This quote by Sister Joan Chittister, a Benedictine Catholic nun, it sums up my feelings on this topic better than I ever could: ``I do not believe that just because you're opposed to abortion, that that makes you pro-life. In fact, I think in many cases, your morality is deeply lacking if all you want is a child born but not a child fed, not a child educated, not a child housed. And why would I think that you don't? Because you don't want any tax money to go there. That's not pro-life. That's pro-birth. We need a much broader conversation on what the morality of pro-life is.''
    Well said, sister!

  • 8/31 7:19am   PMM writes: It is actually possible to never have to consider having an abortion. Now if you would like to talk about how many abortions are performed to save the mother's Life or in instances of rape, we can have that discussion as well. I think you know where I am going with this; most woman do it for their own convenience and there is rarely a question of saving their Life, only ending that of a helpless child to be.
Actually, PMM, I HAVE been in the situation ofhaving to consider having an abortion. Imagine that, a 36 year old married woman, mother of two children, pregnant with a third. Heck, I even taught weekly Sunday School classes. A week after an amniocentesis (after all, I was an older mom), my pregnancy didn't feel right. Something was wrong. The docs push the results of the amnio, I go for another ultrasound, and by now we can see what's wrong. The fetus has all sorts of problems, including an esophagus that doesn't attach to the stomach. My body is starting to reject the fetus, because it isn't viable.
So, what to do? Should I wait for my body to complete the miscarriage or elect to abort? My doctor tells me it could take up to 6 weeks to miscarry; if I wait, carrying a fetus of 18 weeks I could suddenly hemorrhage and die. Not much of a choice, as far as I was concerned. So I decide to abort this much-wanted pregnancy. Then, as they say, the fun begins. I go to a specialist for second-semester abortions. So kind, so understanding about my emotions. He apologizes that by law he has to read a statement delineating exactly what the fetus looks like. Funny, the legislators don't tell me that the fetus has major anomalies and will most likely never live, just that its fingers and toes are fully formed. As though I was making a choice of "convenience". Disgusting. And then my husband and I hear from our insurance company that they will not cover the cost of the procedure because my employer (a local school system) was prohibited by law from covering an "elective" abortion. Beyond disgusting. We were fortunate we could pay for it ourselves, but I keep thinking, what about those women who couldn't afford to pay, and have to wait for weeks until the fetus naturally miscarries? Three months after the abortion, I conceive again, carry to term, and that baby just turned 21.
So, PMM, I followed all the rules - was married, healthy, spiritually "connected", if you will - and yet found I was in a situation where I needed an abortion. And that decision shouldn't be made by anyone except me, my husband, and my medical team. Who knows? Your wife could be in the same situation with her next pregnancy. And I bet then she wouldn't want to hear your words, "It is actually possible to never have to consider having an abortion."

  • 8/31 6:47am   Just within a couple of hours or my earlier post about the baby turtle being run over, I went for a walk and found, a short distance up the street from my home, a recently killed wood chuck in the middle of the road. I was very saddened by this find and moved it off to the side of the road. It occurred to me that this may be the cute critter we've enjoyed watching munch greens from our lawn over the last few weeks or so. I know sometimes the best efforts to avoid an animal in the road ends badly. Please try to be more mindful of our unintended consequences on nature and slow down a bit -- we're not the only creatures inhabiting the planet.

  • 8/31 6:44am   It's turtle hatching time! Yesterday, while driving down Liberty Lane towards Union St., I noticed something small crossing the road as I drove past it - I thought it was perhaps a June bug. Then it dawned on me, that it might have been a baby turtle crossing the road. I immediately turned around in the Library parking lot in hopes of saving it from being run over. Unfortunately, the one car that drove by before I could get to it, had crushed it. That was so sad. It was a baby snapping turtle following nature's instinct to make its way to a nearby pond.
So, in the next week or so, please be aware of these little critters possibly crossing the road and drive carefully. And if you do see one, please help it safely cross the road if you're so inclined.
    Thank you.

Abortion discussion on a community page? Really?
Abortion has recently become a political matter, although should be a private matter between the involved parties and medical professionals they choose to involve.
No one has any right to judge anyone else's personal decisions. You may not agree, you may not ever choose to have an abortion, or ever support your wife or daughter in having one - but that discussion falls under the realm of *your* personal decisions. That no one else should judge. See how that works?
What someone else chooses should be of no concern to you, as long as it is legal.
    It's really that simple.
    - SR

[It's the public aspect, namely, whether it should remain legal, that is the hub of the issue. Advocacy on this topic is unlikely to ever follow the pattern "I understand the law, I support the law, but nobody should ever apply the law," because core to the divergent views is the question of when an egg becomes a person deserving of full civil rights. As to it being on the main page, my bad, I get the blame; I allowed the topic to start and didn't push back in time - Wm.]

  • 8/24 11:53pm   I just want to publicly thank our Norfolk DPW for assisting me in solving a problem here at my home. A tree rooted on Town property had partially fallen on the phone and electric lines that serve my house. I called the DPW and described my situation. They said they would take care of this. Yesterday, the foreman from the DPW showed up, he called Nstar... Nstar came with a bucket truck, cleared away the tree and today, the DPW came back to clear some additional brush and cleaned up the street. This afternoon, the same foreman came by to check the job they did. Thank you very much Norfolk DPW... Great Job!
PS: When asking for the DPW's help... do be patient as they are very busy most days. I did not hound them with tons of calls as may some and it took some time for this problem to be resolved as they are handling some paving work etc at this time. The Norfolk DPW took care of this problem for me in a very professional manner.

  • 8/24 11:08pm   Wm - While I understand this is your site and you control everything about it, I do find it odd that you felt it necessary to add your comment to my post regarding abortion. Judging from your response, I guess you are Pro-Abortion. Regarding your comment, you refute my claim that googling pictures of abortions won't answer the question of "why human 'tissue' that cannot exist outside a woman's body deserves rights above and beyond those of the woman herself"
Where to begin? First of all, based on that comment, I am pretty confident you have never seen the images for yourself (please correct me if I am wrong), which is convenient because it allows you to continue believing it's a bundle of "tissue" (which of course we all are!). Secondly, with contraceptive availability (for free thanks to the current administration), and abstinence (I know I am naive), it is actually possible to never have to consider having an abortion. Now if you would like to talk about how many abortions are performed to save the mother's Life or in instances of rape, we can have that discussion as well. I think you know where I am going with this; most woman do it for their own convenience and there is rarely a question of saving their Life, only ending that of a helpless child to be. Finally, having child of my own and another on the way, I can tell you my 20 month old daughter would certainly die without adult intervention irrespective of the fact that she is outside her Mothers' womb. To my earlier point, and following your logic; that may imply to some the serious consideration of a post-birth abortions. If you think I am crazy, there are many sources available where you can find "respected" doctors who have proposed such things. In fact, our own president delved into this area (as an Illinois state senator) when considering what to do when babies are born during botched "late-term" or "partial birth" abortions.
For people wanting this forum to just be about finding a carpenter, or selling a couch, or complaining about town politics, that is up to the WM, but I think the participation may go down. Once in a while I think having a good provocative discussion is healty.
    - PMM

[I added the comment to focus the discussion and head off strawman arguments. The abortion question is not about killing pre-birth infants with functioning organs (obviously they should have and do have person rights), but whether, in case of conflict, the rights of the guest human tissue (embryo) trump that of the host human (woman). Instead of digressing to post-birth abortions (ie, infanticide), it might be more interesting to consider whether the right to control one's own body includes the right to control implantation into one's uterus, and whether miscarriage (de-implantation) should be banned by law - Wm.]

  • 8/19 1:20pm   There are so many encouraging passages in scripture that declare an assurance of salvation in, by, and because of Jesus. Consider the book of John, chapter 6, when Jesus said, "For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day." But we also read statements from Jesus that give us considerable pause in regards to having any level of assurance of our salvation, like in the book of Matthew, chapter 7, when Jesus said that on the Day of Judgment He will declare to many professing Christians, "I never knew you, depart from me, you workers of lawlessness." Considering these passages, can we ever really know in this life if we have been saved from the righteous wrath of God due our sin?

  • 8/18 5:27pm   Re the rehabs: You really have to go yourself to see what they do or don't have. You also need to try the food. I went twice to Clark House in Westwood where it was clean, cheerfully well-decorated and the food was very good, even excellent. I was completley comfortable with the doctor who came there and his PA was frequently available. The bathrooms are tiny, but adequate. The maintenance fellow was on top of everything immediately. The staff that deals with patients is almost totally Caribbean, but about half spoke English reasonably well, and if not they would always go and get someone who could speak English. Most of them were quite pleasant and engaging. You are housed on floors with the long-term patients, some dying, so that could seriously bother some people.
I visited the Maples in Wrentham before going back to Clark and I was pretty turned off by the arrangement of beds in the rooms: Each bed faced the other, so that you were looking directly at the other person, with no apparent curtain. However, everyone coming and going loved it.

  • 8/18 4:50pm   JC: Some things to think about when looking at daycare that I wish someone told me: Please ask if the facility is licensed and check them on the state's early childhood website. Ask how many children are there on a daily basis, if any assistants are used and how (they must be licensed as well), if they might travel with the child, and how the facility feels about unexpected drop-ins by the parent(s); any decent daycare will NOT have a problem with parent drop-ins. It's also good to know what the general routine is of the day and if you have an infant, how much tummy time/floor time he/she gives during a busy day! You can also ask to spend some time there to see the routines and kids. Sorry if it sounds like I am lecturing but a few months ago there was an issue with a daycare in town in which it was suddenly shut down by the state. Good luck.

  • 8/18 4:49pm   DA, I couldn't agree with you more! If people can't discuss a topic in an open public forum, where else is it to be discussed? The great thing about a forum like this is if you don't like the topic you can scroll on past and not comment.

  • 8/18 4:48pm   Wm, I echo the request to place abortion-related posts on the politics page. I suggest you could post a note on the main page that an abortion post from [initials] has been received and posted on the politics page. That way, people who do not wish to read it are not subjected to seeing it. Those who are interested can. It seems there are only a few who are posting on this topic.

  • 8/14 5:30pm   Some have questioned whether the "inconvenient truth" (apologies to Mr. Gore) of abortion has a place on this forum. If "it takes a village to raise a child" (Hey, didn't a certain Wellesley grad write a book by that name?), then surely a village or a suburban hamlet like Norfolk (one whose town center seamlessly embraces both a house of worship and a seat of govt. in town hall) can help "raze" one as well by remaining silent on the issue or relegating it to the backwater of the politics page of Norfolknet. If you subscribe to the adage that "all politics is local," then surely this issue deserves to be aired next to such mundane matters as brick crosswalks and dog sitting services.

  • 8/14 5:08pm   DWL, Just curious; with regards to your comment "first and foremost, a woman has a right to choose what she is going to do with her body". If the baby happens to be a female (i.e. an "infant woman"), would you defend THAT woman's right to do anything she wanted with her body, including protecting herself from being killed?
You say that "It does not matter when the heart starts beating etc." If you honestly believe that, then by extension why not allow "post-birth abortions", assuming the umbilical cord is still connected? After all, then it's still technically the "woman's body", right? If you think about it; fundamentally there is no difference whether the baby is inside the mother or out. Do you honestly think when a baby exits the womb, miraculously they are capable of self-sustenance and able to live without adult support?
PS. I challenge you to google search "abortion images" if you have already done so. Then tell me those images are "part of a woman's body". Seriously.
    - PMM

[ Googling pictures will not answer the question of why human tissue that cannot exist outside a woman's body deserves rights above and beyond those of the woman herself. - Wm.]

  • 8/14 4:27pm   It would be nice if all of the posts regarding abortion rights were posted to a dedicated discussion page. This topic is about a state/national issue, not a Norfolk decision point in any town election. While I respect people's right to share their open opinions, this particular issue is so divisive that it seems fair to direct those who feel strongly about it to a specific forum to discuss it amongst themselves. How to handle these posts is clearly up to WM and I will certainly respect his decision.

  • 8/14 4:25pm   Yeah, right AB-G, asking the Wm to censor less is communist. Yeah Mao, Lenin and Trotsky were soooo all about open communication and free speech. You never spare this forum you learned opinion. I was sharing my views. I am a proud feminist and I support a woman's right to choose. What was a family issue has been made a political hot potato by misogynistic right wingers. The wm is quick to censor political posts that have a statewide or national focus and relegate them to the "politics" page. This is a hot button political issue, how did it make the main page? The wm is a great guy as is his lovely assistant but they are not being consistent. I guarantee that come election season, other posts that are political in nature, mine and those of the opposing side, will not make the main page. You should read up about communism, I thought you were a public school teacher? I like to think that public school teachers have a broader world view.

Your posts will simply be ignored if people find them offensive or riduclous. Stop trying to control the discourse, and for God's sake, stop bothering Andras. We're lucky that he renders this invaluable service to the town.

  • 8/10 12:34pm   PR: A fetus is not a baby, an embryo is not a baby. A baby is something that exists outside it's mother and is able to exist outside a womb. Why can't we agree that until a fetus is able to exist outside the womb - which is generally around 23 or 24 weeks, it is the woman - who has the womb - who makes the choice of whether the pregnancy continues or ends. And when did I ever weigh in about soda???

  • 8/10 12:33pm   Something I've learned in the few years I've been part of Big Corporate America is to always keep your game face on. No matter how "beneath you" you find someone, do not lose your cool on them. You never know when you will cross paths with that person again, or when you are going to need something from them; a recommendation, a favor, a vote. As a matter of fact, many an adage have been written to support this point of view: "don't burn your bridges", "you catch more flies with honey", "kill 'em with kindness"... And so on. I've always found that people are more willing to help and work with you if you are kind. In short: don't be rude to people.

  • 8/10 12:16pm   35 years ago, the Domincan Republic was very new to the world of baseball. They have produced numerous stars in the world of baseball. Today we have a budding baseball league in South America looking for used baseball equipment. The Guyana Baseball League has been organized and has started to train baseball players ages 9 to 21. The goal of this far away league is to become a sustainable league to hopefully produce players that will be able to compete in leagues from little league to college aged players. I am loading a container of equipment that will be shipped early this fall and would love any help. Gloves, bats, catcher's equipment, helmets, uniforms and bags. Check us out at www.baseballguyana.com.

  • 8/10 12:14pm   DT, You know what I was referring to. In essence, first and foremost, a woman has a right to choose what she is going to do with her body. That's it. Plain and simple. It does not matter when the heart starts beating etc. A woman's right is a woman's right.

  • 8/4 1:58am   DT, I work downtown and obviously noticed the road work going on, it makes me wonder who's making the decisions on where the money goes in this town? They should have figured out by now that bricks are nice looking but we don't live in the Mediterranean, extreme temperate changes determine longevity so we need to make better choices. Someone in town hall obviously likes rock walls, ever notice how many we have that are paid for by your taxes? Not that I'm complaining because long term they are a good investment.

  • 8/4 1:50am   With so much dialogue about the problems with the roundabouts and cross walk bricks/pavers in the center of Town I just wanted to chime in with my own observation. It is a fact that road salt decays certain masonry products and concrete. The bricks in place are dissolving and it appears this is due to the use of roadway salt being applied to them. If this is truly the case, the problem is not due to poor workmanship in the installation of the bricks but a problem due to the actual bricks/pavers used. Who specified the use of this type of brick? This question would be answered by the designers of the roundabouts and crosswalks. There are lots of choices for bricks/pavers that would be used in roadway applications. Bricks that can withstand yearly road salt being applied to them.

There are 2 size buckets so you can pick a little or a lot. Jane said corn in August and apples and pumpkins in the fall. They also have eggs! Sad not to see the fresh veggies on the shelf but good that they are still here for the other local favorites!!

  • 7/29 1:28am   ALL - If you read the trail of messages you would find my tone was equal to the tone set by the person who initially responded to me. Many studies have shown a high percentage of the Obama support came from the low-information voter. I am not sure many people would argue that he's more of a celebrity than a politician. It might make you feel better by calling the killing of breathing baby who is living outside the womb of the mother an abortion, but it perfectly fits the definition of murder. State Senator Obama did vote in favor of allowing a second doctor to enter the room and kill a baby who survived an abortion. Isn't protecting the people who are unable to protect themselves one the most basic purposes of a government? It's quite odd you are willing to allow the government to protect a women from consuming too much soda at lunch but at the same time feeling the protection of a baby is some how a violation of a women's right. Please note religion has nothing to do with this subject.

  • 7/29 1:18am   DT: I agree with you on term limits but I'm not sure you can blame the town center, town hall and other municipal improvements on ``full time politicians''. Do we even have full time politicians making those decisions?
I truly believe the town center looks much better now than it did before the improvements were made. This makes the town more attractive to outsiders and potential new residents. If the town is in fact more attractive doesn't it raise the values of our properties? Maybe I'm wrong but don't think so.
I guess the only criticism I have would be the quality of the work being done. The brick round-abouts should have lasted for years. They clearly didn't, so I question either the specs or the quality of work. Perhaps in an effort to keep costs (and complaining) down we accidently actually drove the longer term costs up.
I can relate that to the parking lots up on the town hill for the T. Have you walked through there? I'm not sure who's responsible (the T, the town or the developer) but for it to be in this condition after such a short time tells me that someone cut corners. Cracks (too many to count) you can put your foot into, badly chipped curbs...just an overall mess. Has it even been ten years since it was done?
Overall I'd give the downtown a ``B+'' as compared to other towns and as compared to what it used to look like. Quality of the materials took away the ``A''.

  • 7/29 1:14am   To JC- have been using Distinctive Landscaping out of North Attleboro for 3 years. The owner has his degree in the field of landscaping. He is wonderful as is his crew. They are very neat and dependable and will not mow if your lawn goes dormant and you let them know. I also think they once told me that if below a certain percentage of lawn has growth, they will bypass it. I usually let them know as I did tonight since mowing would be a waste of money this week. There is a crew for mowing and another for landscaping. They use a small 21" mower on parts of our lawn as well so they can do a better job around certain gardens in narrow areas. Jason (owner) can be reached via email or phone. E -mail is jason@redtrucks.net. I find their prices to be reasonable too.

  • 7/23 9:40pm   Just griping.
I live on North St (Rt 115) just outside the center of town. Last night someone played "mailbox baseball" with my mailbox, the guy across the street and the guy next door.
The fact that they hit both sides of the street tells me they were on foot. I heard some high-school aged boys walk by the night before at around 11:00 and then again even later (I am a night owl). Hey, I was a kid once too, but I didn't make a habit of destroying people's property.
I only hope the next time they come, I am outside with my dogs. I am sure it will make for an interesting "discussion".

  • 7/23 3:33pm   ALL, Let me just state, I don't believe abortion is right, but I also believe it is a woman's right to choose what she does to her own body. That being said, where do you draw the line on whether to continue or not continue a pregnancy? Before or after the heart starts beating? Partial birth? Or is it just terms or trimesters which the left likes to use to obscure the fact that abortion, after the heart starts beating, is ______. ALL, you fill in the blank. Once there is a heartbeat, a woman is not just doing something to her own body, but someone elses as well.

  • 7/23 3:29pm   DT said "Perfectly good 4 way stop signs were replaced with those money gobbling "round abouts" that screw up traffic."
There is no such thing as "Perfectly good 4 way stop signs," because they just force everyone to stop even when there is no one else around which is a very inefficient way to mandate traffic. If you can't adjust your speed and merge with the flow, maybe you shouldn't be driving. And as for screwing up traffic, just ask any of the people who go through downtown regularly, and you'll find that the huge backups of old 4-way stop days no longer exist since the rotaries (roundabouts? What are you, English?)
Oh and Sam's is definitely the most reliable and cost efficient car repair shop in the area, we've used them for years now and won't go anywhere else and always recommend it to all our friends and family.

  • 7/23 3:28pm   I just wanted to give a shout out to the town DPW and the paving crew that are resurfacing Seekonk Street during this heat wave. It is great to finally get our street repaired! Let's not forget our Police Dept for directing traffic in the heat also. Now that Seekonk Street is repaired I hope that those of you who pass by in a rush to get here or there don't SPEED on our new road or you may meet one of our fine police officers face to face and you don't want that!
I know many of you wish they had been working on your street, but with the Governor Patrick only allowing 50% of the chapter 90 road funding to be released; it may be some time for others to get repaired. Let's contact the Patrick administration and let them know we are tired of the pot holes and bumpy roads and to give the full chapter 90 funding the towns need to do repairs.

He does have a twin brother that resides in the town and it may be him. Email me at cagray605@msn.com with the info. Thanks

  • 7/19 2:16pm   So sad to tell you about the passing today of the beloved gym teacher, Jack Thomas. Jack & Gail were visiting from New Jersey and Jack was playing golf today when he had a heart attack. Our hearts break for Gail and her children. Jack taught in the Norfolk schools for over 30 years. Tentative plans for services at Ross' Funeral home on Sunday afternoon and services at Trinity Church on Monday at 10 am. Gone too soon at age 66. We'll miss you, Jack.

  • 7/19 2:06pm   GL, Just look around the center of town. Perfectly good 4 way stop signs were replaced with those money gobbling "round abouts" that screw up traffic because nobody knows how to enter a rotary. If you go into the center of town at night it is lit up like the bright side of the moon. Guess who pays for all those lights? The Town Hall is twice the size we need and the Library the same. In this day and age with computers and smart phones, you would think we could get away with smaller buildings. We are also paying to heat, cool and light those buildings. Time to start thinking of part time representatives and term limits. Full time polititians have way to much time on their hands to think of ways to spend your hard earned money.

  • 7/19 2:04pm   To PRB. You are thinking about having your car repaired at Orlando's Garage. I used them for many repairs on my car and, finally got smart. Everytime my car needed repair I would ask how much. It was always the same answer "Just a few dollars." Car would be done, I would get the bill and it would be $200.00 and up. Also they would take forever to fix the car. I stopped using Orlando's and decided to take my car to a place where I could trust them.

  • 7/19 2:02pm   Hi my name is Danielle and I am looking for babysitting jobs! I work at the Dunkin' Donuts in Norfolk and I usually work mornings and part of the afternoon, so I can not promise I will always be available at that time, but I can definitely do night time babysitting because I rarely work nights.
I am very flexible with prices. I also have my license so I can drive myself to and from your home, I am not legal yet to drive other people until January however.
I love kids and I am not the type of babysitter that will just sit inside watching TV all day with the kids, I try to keep the kids very entertained and do activites and such. If you have any animals that's also completely fine because I love animals as well!
If you are interested please email me at xdanielle8546x@aim.com You can also text / call me at 508-341-5261 Thank You!

  • 7/19 2:01pm   PRB: You are right to be concerned about any business that moves around a lot. It's a huge hassle to move a car repair shop, I would imaggine, so why are they doing it?. A number of people have recommended repair shops. I have gone to Robert's Garage on 1A southbound in Walpole, just south of the center for 17 years. I have never had to take my car back because something was done wrong. He's not cheap, but avoiding aggravation is a big priority, especially with cars. His phone is 508 668 9045. Tell him Ruben's wife recommended him.

  • 7/19 1:37pm   Regarding Orlando's Garage... My experience with them has not been good. My vehicle didn't pass its inspection this February. I was told that it needed front end work on the driver's side. It was the very same repair work that I had them do in 2012. (They said it was out of warrenty already.) I asked for an estimate. They would not give it to me. They actually insisted that since it was on the lift, "to just let them start the work." Being low on funds - hey, who isn't nowadays? - I NEEDED to know what it might cost. Again, I was not given the quote and got an insult added, "What, you don't have any savings built up??" I was ticked and asked him to just give me the quote. Nope. He said that he would email it to me by the next day. (WHAT?) I asked for them to bring my vehicle around and said I'd drive it with a Reject sticker. He warned me that I would get pulled over. (I know that you have time to make the repair before the R sticker gets you into trouble...)
I was upset and asked a friend who they'd recommend. Sam's Auto in Wrentham. A small, hole-in-the-wall place. I called him and Sam told me - right on the spot - approx. $300. OK. I had an idea. I waited for the email from Orlando's. Till the next afternoon. Nothing. I called the next day. They STILL would not give me a verbal estimate. By this time, I had even asked a Millis garage when I was gassing up there. THEY gave me a verbal estimate - $350. That next night, Orlando's emailed me their quote: $650. (And, I knew it would climb higher...) I had Sam's repair it. In only a few hours' time. And he was true to his estimate!
I went back to Orlando's for the re-inspection. He asked me where I got the front-end repaired (oh, it was the PASSENGER"S side not the driver's side that they had told me!) When I told him Sam's Auto, he snorted and asked me how much and I told him. He laughed and said that I would, "get what I paid for." In all honesty, I have used Orlando's a number of times in the past 5 years. I figured that they were the same as any other mechanic. Now I am wondering if I didn't get fleeced. His final bill was ALWAYS a couple hundred over the estimate. Maybe it is because I have a vagina and am therefore an easy mark?
Since February, Sam has fixed my front bumper and headlight when I was in an accident - coming UNDER his estimate by $50! Last month, when my power windows/locks stopped working, I checked all the fuses before I went to Sam. I was thinking I'd need a new relay switch or a new motor. He had it for a few hours and found that it needed to be rewired to get it all working again. What did he charage for rewiring my driver's side door?? $100!! I was thrilled.
If you are looking for a garage with a comfy and stylish waiting room with coffee & donuts and a flatscreen TV airing your favorite morning talk shows, Sam's is not for you. BUT, I can assure you, what you WILL get there is honesty and affordable prices.

  • 7/15 3:55pm   I just wanted to remind Pheasant Hill area families with pets to keep their pets indoors at night. Our beloved little cat accidentally got out of the house. Sadly, we did not realize she was missing. We all thought she was with another person in the house. She was attacked and killed by a fisher cat or a fox. Whatever the animal was, it had a horrifying bark type of sound. The incident occurred at about 3:30- 4:00am, Sunday July 14. Once we realized the sound was right outside our house, we thought, is it possible Gracie got out of the house and we didn't know it? We searched the house for her and could not find her. We went outside to call for her and she was found in our neighbor's front yard, dead. She did not appear to be mauled and was not bloodied, thank god. We pray she was just scared to death and went quickly. This took place on Quail Run.
Any thoughts on how to help children ages 13 and 12 deal with this untimely death of our first family pet would be most appreciated.
    Thank you.

  • 7/15 3:45pm   Can anyone explain why we are re-bricking the town center roads, when so many streets are in complete disrepair around town. I live on a street where the pot holes can swallow a small child. It is hard to imagine in a climate that constantly changes, why we have these brick roadways anyways. Between plowing and weather it truly makes no sense. Beauty is one thing, but functionality is another. I hope all townspeople with similar road conditions ask the same questions to the DPW and our town officials, Why??

  • 7/15 3:44pm   MG - I think posts from proselytizing religious conservatives about topics that are personal family decisions and not open for public debate, should be relegated to their own page - so I agree with you.
PR, if you think that this is a political issue as you expressed in your Obama-rant post, I suggest that similar posts about such sensitive political issues, should be made to the politics page. Wm, would consider that? I do not think religious zealotry and misogynistic views of the world should be a part of the main page of Norfolknet if partisan politics has been banned.

  • 7/7 9:02am   JW - it's very possible you inadvertently tripped the safety device on your propane tank, which restricts the gas flow and therefore prevents the grill from getting hot. Try these steps:
    1. Open the grill lid.
    2. Turn off all knobs on the control panel in front.
    3. Turn off the tank knob. * Disconnect the regulator from the LP tank.
    4. Wait 30 seconds. * Reconnect the regulator to the LP tank.
    5. Slowly open the LP tank knob all the way open. Do not put excessive force on the valve at the full open position to avoid damaging the valve. 6. Turn on the appropriate control knob and light the grill per the instructions on the control panel.

Subject: Happy Independence Day.... and God bless America

Moving rendition!!!! Happy 4th of July.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Celebrate this Independence Day with the hope that this original rendition gave to another down hearted generation... Have a wonderful 4th of July and God bless America!!

Original Song of GOD Bless America

Do you remember Kate Smith ?

Frank Sinatra considered Kate Smith the best singer of her time, and said that when he and a million other guys first heard her sing "God Bless America" on the radio, they all pretended to have dust in their eyes as they wiped away a tear or two. Here are the facts...

The link at the bottom will take you to a video showing the very first public singing of "GOD BLESS AMERICA". But before you watch it, you should also know the story behind the first public showing of the song.

The time was 1940. America was still in a terrible economic depression. Hitler was taking over Europe and Americans were afraid we'd have to go to war. It was a time of hardship and worry for most Americans.

This was the era just before TV, when radio shows were HUGE, and American families sat around their radios in the evenings, listening to their favorite entertainers, and no entertainer of that era was bigger than Kate Smith.

  • 7/2 7:35pm   Thank you SO as I am still sick and it will be a month Wed. I do have a comment for all regarding "Fox Run" in Wrentham and into Norfolk: It has done just that--the foxes are running plus the coyotes have joined and 1 fisher cat that I know of. If you hear screaming anywhere from 1am-3am it is usually the fischer cat. I don't blame them as we are taking their land and their babies need food. The foxes and coyotes are out during the day so be careful of your small animals.

We are in need of knitted worsted 4 ply polyester or cotton yarn, no wool please. All yarn donated is used for charity work. I understand that we have made over 3000 chemo hats. All donations can be dropped off at the Norfolk Senior Center on Medway Branch between the hours of 9-4 PM, Mon, thru Fri. Thank you.
