Everyone loves a legend ~ but in Chicago during the roaring twenties, there's only room for one. Roxie Hart (Madeline Canfield, Foxboro, MA) murders a faithless lover and convinces her hapless husband Amos (Matthew Hawley, Norwood, MA) to take the rap...until he finds out he's been duped and turns on Roxie. Convicted and sent to death row, Roxie meets up with another "Merry Murderess" Velma Kelly (Alexa Lieberthal, Wrentham, MA), who is not happy that Roxie is not only stealing her limelight but also her lawyer, Billy Flynn (Johnny Fullerton, Mansfield, MA). Roxie and Velma both vie for the spotlight and the headlines, ultimately joining forces in search of the "American Dream": fame, fortune and acquittal.
This sharp-edged satire features a dazzling score, lavish production numbers and "all that jazz"!

  • 6/26 11:02pm   BF II - I am not sure why you find the truth offensive. I am not speaking for, nor did I watch, any videos posted by TR, but how can any human being think of anything else but how State Senator Barrack Obama voted when the words offensive and abortion are used in the same sentence? Can you imagine voting to allow a doctor to come into a hospital room and kill a living, breathing baby who survived an abortion? That is exactly how State Senator Obama voted. If we have one duty as a nation it's to protect those who are unable to protect themselves. We deserve better as a Nation. We deserve better leaders. BF II, I am coming around to your point of view this truth is offensive.

  • 6/26 10:48pm   Still having problems. Cortisone shots into both knees today plus more blood work. The doc says Norfolk is rated the highest as every case has to be reported. I feel bad for young children who really can't explain how they feel.
In the last 2 weeks I have dealt with 2 coyotes and 1 adult fox. My grandson found the break in the wire fence and it has been fixed. My yard and driveway are fenced in but they are hungry and we are taking their land. I'll keep you posted--should know the blood results Wed. Thanks MON.

  • 6/26 10:44pm   Hi Everyone, does anyone have an old-school radio flyer wagon (2-kid size) or something similar they can loan or sell for rolling small moving boxes from car to house over the next two weeks? It would relieve some lifting. Email Sharon (gracieobrien@comcast.net) or call home/office at 508-553-3977. Thanks.

  • 6/26 10:43pm   BF (2): I always enjoy reading Norfolknet. Some of it makes me smile, some of it makes me cringe, some of it informs. None of it offends me.
That's a good way to stay happy and respectful.

  • 6/24 1:40am   Have been seeing a couple of foxes on the fields behind KP Middle school at dusk. Seem to run off when my large dog and I walk at night, but for anyone with small dogs or cats in the area please be cautious.

  • 6/24 1:30am   So, you miss me SB? I stopped following the Norfolk scene, have moved on, although one night I woke up screaming-a nightmare - with mobs of faceless zombies - they were ripping at my pockets, trying to steal my wallet! And a faint voice from NN was calling my name! Heeelp meeee! Like the voice of the mutant bug in "The Fly", the B and W version, not the new one with that guy everyone hates. When I checked NN I found out the answer - NOTHING is happening in Norfolk - except I saw your post. Oh, and that your taxes are climbing faster than a hungry porcupine looking for grubs in a decaying Cottonwood!
But I have no time for politics because my new State is run just fine and too busy fighting Huanglongbing from cheesy Wal-Mart plants you all bought that's causing the collapse of the global citrus industry - although I hear about the political misery from my MA friends. And the tears still stream down my face!(*) If you only knew that there are alternatives to the Liberal disease and its symptoms. Now my taxes and pulse are low, the property values sky-rocketing, because here the govt. workers work an actual full day and work week, don't steal, don't complain, lest they get fired by leaders with actual spines! Real vertebrates, working! SOB!!
Now I have time to reflect genuinely on how the kids here love their teachers, get Apple laptops assigned yearly, and the schools and unions here not over-populated by hyper-emotional women. And I often ponder, while riding the ranges, on how the folks here are intrinsically friendly, and how many of my neighbors left Hollywood to enjoy the dry-bug-free-mountain climate that is Park City, where doors are unlocked, neighbors stop by and its socially acceptable to slur your words before noon. My only complaint is that the hot tub parties can bleach out your clothing and it's not unusual to find a neighbor rummaging through your liquor cabinet at 4 am! That Montel!
So hang in there, as time speeds up, the bugs keep biting and the Beast moves closer, I have fond memories of Norfolk and only these words of wisdom to impart.
Be sure to take your Doxycycline! It's the best anti-Lyme's drug BR, and cheap too! If it could only lower taxes, reverse ED, grow vertebrae and fight political cronyism and corruption, they'd put it in every water supply in Massachusetts! That's if the Liberals don't get in the way!
That's how I am, SB! Now all of you, send me 20 bucks care of NN, or kiss your breakfast OJ goodbye!

  • 6/24 1:29am   TR & PR, Thanks so much for making public such offensive views.
    - BF (2)

  • 6/24 1:28am   Received another comment about keeping this topic off the front page; not sure if it was for posting or as a personal comment.
    - Wm.

  • 6/24 1:22am   Is this really the appropriate forum to discuss abortion, national politics (AIDS support) and other non-community related matters? All due respect, the abortion posting seems completely inappropriate here, particularly as religious propaganda (regardless of whether or not the people involved in the posting are members of our community). Wm, correct me if I am wrong, but the intent of the website seems to be for community related dialogue, not for promoting religious or political viewpoints. Seems like a slippery slope to continue such dialogue.
    - CS

[The idea is to have a place where the community can get together and exchange ideas and opinions; various topics have been explored. The abortion posting was commercial speech; the Resting In Grace programming notes have been appearing for a while now - Wm.]

  • 6/20 6:54pm   The issue of abortion is a sensitive topic, but the importance of keeping it on the forefront of public discourse cannot be understated. In the latest episode of the local cable TV show called Resting In Grace, Pastor Mark Lukens and Tom Ryan profile a portion of a controversial, award winning documentary by Christian Evangelist Ray Comfort called "180". While some of the images are graphic (Viewer Discretion is Advised), the film provides an opportunity for people on both sides of the issue to benefit from Ray's unique perspective. So join us for Resting In Grace - Episode 29 - vimeo.com/channels/rig "Abortion: Choice or Holocaust".
The show airs on NCTV every Tuesday and Thursday night at 6:00PM on Verizon CH-41 and Comcast CH-8. The show is hosted by Norfolk resident Tom Ryan and features Pastor Mark Lukens, also a Norfolk resident and pastor of the Providence Baptist providencebaptistchurchma.org/index.html Church of Norfolk.

  • 6/20 6:48pm   BR (#1) - I am very sorry you have Lyme. It is no picnic. Research will help you most - go to www.cdc.gov and read. As far as I know, deer ticks are present unless a deep frost is present. Vets advise dog owners to use preventative treatments year 'round. Check your cat for ticks. You have some work - obviously take care of yourself, follow medical advice, and stop tick entry into your home right now. Talk to your vet and use the internet for information. One way, sorry to say, would be to keep your cat inside.

  • 6/20 6:46pm   TEM - God Bless you. God Bless the United States of America for allowing you to have the freedom of your opinion, unless of course your middle name is Tea Party or your last name is Patriot or you have begun a Christian or Jewish organization. I truly doubt anyone would honestly consider the $1,600,000,000 single year AIDS funding in 1988 that President Reagan signed in to law as lack of leadership for a hugely preventable virus. I can only imagine the pain and grief I would have if a loved one of mine was diagnosed with the deadly virus and the feeling that no monetary figure would be enough for the government to spend on it. I would feel the same though, if my loved one was diagnosed with breast cancer, a disease which hadn't received nearly as much funding as AIDS did in 1988. Please remember the time frame in our nation's history, took incredible courage and leadership from First Ladies Betty Ford and Nancy Reagan to publicly discuss breast cancer. America wasn't ready publicly to deal with the mostly homosexual issue of AIDS. During the Reagan Presidency congress couldn't properly deal with the homosexual issues of Massachusetts Democratic Congressmen Frank or Studds. Barney Frank's boyfriend ran a gay brothel out of Barney's apartment and Gerry Studds had sex with a male teenage intern. The punishment doled out by Congress to our Massachusetts members was minor.

Car enthusiasts are invited to gather at the dealership, and showcase their pride and joys while admiring the prized hardware of other automotive fanatics. Chambers has always looked to gather people who are passionate about cars in one location, grab a cup of coffee and exchange stories of what makes their unique car so special to them.

  • 6/17 10:12pm   I have just found out how I got Lyme disease. My cat came in and as I am laying down most of the time--I'm still sick--he came up to join me. As he walked passed me I see a moving black dot on the white fur around his neck. The black dot fell on the sheet and began to crawl. I have it (dead) on an index card to show the doc tomorrow to make sure this is a deer tic. Looks like I got bit in my own house. I'll let you know what the doc says. Would the weather we have been having added to the tic population??

  • 6/14 11:43pm   BR#1, my daughter has been fighting Lyme for years. It's pretty awful. Hopefully, yours was caught in the beginning stages. What you are probably feeling is a Herxheimer reaction as the bacteria dies off. It's hard, I know, but it is a good sign. I could write on and on about Lyme, but the most important thing is to take the antibiotics long enough. Most doctors are not experts, and will only give a limited course of maybe 3 weeks. The International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society recommends continuing abx until symptom free for 1 month, with at least 6 weeks minimum. I can't stress this enough... chronic Lyme is not something anyone wants. The best Lyme overview I've found is put out by LymePA.org and it is a downloadable booklet called "The Basics". It has lots of great websites listed in the back. Good luck. Feel free to ask the Wm. for my number if you need to pick my brain.

  • 6/14 11:41pm   BR(#1): I feel for you! I had Lyme disease about 5 years ago. It was caught fairly early since I had the telltale rash. I originally thought it was poison ivy, but realized something wasn't quite right when I had the worst headache of my life that would not go away with extra strength Excedrin. I imagine that the earlier it's caught the quicker you'll respond to your meds. I have read that the longer the Lyme goes undiagnosed the more damage it does to your system and the longer the symptoms will last. I was prescribed a 3-week course of antibiotics. How long is your course? I cannot recall how long it took to feel better, but I would recommend that you rest and call your doctor with any concerns. Best of luck and keep us posted.

  • 6/14 5:06pm   BR (#1) - I contracted lyme back in 2006. Was put on the regiment of Doxycycline for 3 weeks. 1 week later it returned and was worse than ever. I was eventually sent to an infectious disease specialists, Dr Sam Donta out of Falmouth. One thing he said to me was "you know you better than anyone else". If you feel sick, go to the doctor and demand treatment. If they won't treat you, find another. I was on Doxy/tetracycline from May through December. According to his nurse practioner, 02056 is one of the worst places in the state. For some light reading, see kaiserpapers.org/co/donta9d.html and www.ilads.org/files/burrascano_0905.pdf.

  • 6/14 5:01pm   BR, I had contracted Lyme's last summer and my symptoms were a very high fever (over 104) at nighttime, body aches, cold sweats and heavy fatigue. I also had a very large non-bull's eye welt the size of a soccer ball where the bite had occurred. I never saw the tick. I went to the doctor as soon as I saw the welt and had symptoms which was likely within the all important first 48 hours. I was immediately put on Doxycycline for forty days and tested for Lyme's. The test came back negative but, I was told that this is typical with Lyme's. The antibodies they look for in the test take days to show up on a blood test. The Doxycycline worked fast as far as knocking down my symptoms and after a week, I felt much better. I stayed on the medicine for the full course of forty days (very important!).
There are a lot of articles on the web stating a longer duration on Doxycycline is necessary but, that is if you have had untreated Lyme's for some time.
The leading research doctor and his team works out of Mass General and his name is Dr. Allen Steere www.massgeneral.org/research/researchlab.aspx?id=1337 You may discover some bad press about him which I would recommend you discard. He discovered Lyme's years ago and still is a leader in Lyme's research. His funding and team speak for themselves.
Lyme's is very serious and can lead to many other serious health issues if left untreated. I am fortunate in likely defeating Lyme's within my body but I am now very careful about going into the woods this time of the year.
    Hope this information is helpful...
    Best wishes on your treatment.

  • 6/12 10:02pm   No matter one's political leanings I think most people would agree that it is largely a futile exercise to tread critically on the sacred ground of two worshipped American icons, both of whom continue to be so enriched by myth and nostalgia that their flaws and mistakes continue to vanish with the efficiency of a master magician's stage illusion. Although I reside on the left politically, I do admit that John F. Kennedy is one such icon. And Ronald Reagan is the other.
Nevertheless, it is quite difficult to sit still when someone states unequivocally that Reagan is "the greatest American leader of our lifetime," whether on this forum (see PR/6/7@10:11pm) or anywhere else. For the reasons mentioned above it would be pointless to elaborate on all of the reasons why such a statement should be challenged (e.g., Iran-Contra, funding and equipping the Taliban, voodoo economics, the tripling of the deficit, transforming the country from a creditor nation to a debtor nation, endorsement of massive selfishness, greed, and deregulation that would lead to the Savings and Loan crisis as well as setting the stage for a host of economic disasters that would come years later); but, I will mention one factor alone that, in my view, completely disqualifies this man as a "great" leader.
Was it not Ronald W. Reagan who as President remained criminally silent as the growing epidemic of AIDS took the lives of thousands of Americans? And by the time he was forced to begrudgingly and half-heartedly address the issue in 1987 the epidemic had resulted in 59,572 reported cases in this country alone and nearly 28,000 women and men had already died (to say nothing of the countless cases not reported or misdiagnosed). In fact, the spread of this devastating worldwide virus and the resulting casualties grew at a terrifying rate for a full seven years of Reagan's presence in the White House only to be met with his appalling silence, ignorance, denial, and his truly heartless blocking of community and nationwide education, prevention initiatives, desperately needed increases in vital research, and federal funding.
Without question, this single, almost incomprehensible failure to act decisively during such a public health crisis not only excludes him as ever being considered a "great" leader, but makes one hesitate to use the term "leader" at all when describing him, especially by all those who lost relatives, friends, colleagues, and loved ones at that critical time in this country's history when so many of the afflicted could have been adequately cared for, treated, or spared.

  • 6/10 9:52pm   Another shout out for Distinctive Landscaping. They delivered and spread mulch and although I had pulled many weeds over the past few weeks, there were still some remaining which they went around and hand pulled before putting the mulch down. They do such a wonderful job--they have separate crews for mowing and doing shrubbery/gardens/mulching. So neat, professional and reasonably priced too. Last year they delivered loam and over-seeded. Now that we have had rain and the grass has finally recovered from the winter, things look really nice. They can be reached via e-mail at That is the owner's email which I find is the best way to reach them.

While the weather created some challenges early in the day, once the sun came out it was a fun time for all. We measure success by the smiles and laughter of the participants, and it was clear so many enjoyed our bouncy rides, Norfolk Rec's Touch-a-truck, excellent food by our police and fire department, pony rides by our local 4H group, the train ride, music, fun and games by our many entertainers, and the opportunity to interact with the our vendors/organizations. The Lions appreciates the many donations by sponsors, vendors, and participants. Monies raised will go to support various local programs and Lions charities. • 6/7 10:35pm   I've been teaching preschool in Norfolk for about 16 years now (first at Norfolk Children's School, then I shifted to teaching "Practicing Preschool" programs for Norfolk Recreation.) Since I've had the pleasure of knowing so many wonderful families in Norfolk, I thought some of you may be interested in an upcoming event I'm participating in. :) I recently published two young adult paranormal novels (the first two of a trilogy), and will be signing at an event in North Attleboro. The books are appropriate for ages 12+ (there have been younger readers - all depends on what the parent allows.) There is some kissing and mild swearing, plus some "mature" teen themes (nothing wildly inappropriate.) The event will be held at Bath Junkie (a customizable bath and body product shop) on Wednesday, June 12th, from 6-9pm. Bath Junkie is located at 586 Kelley Blvd. North Attleboro. There will be several really cool vendors there, too, and raffles and door prizes! The first 20 guests will receive a complimentary 4 ounce coffee scrub, courtesy of Bath Junkie. Oh, and I'll be giving out chocolate and bookmarks! :) The books I'll be signing are Teen Fury: Unleashed and Teen Fury: Embraced (Teen Fury: Atoned will be coming this winter!) I hope to see some familiar faces! :) Thanks so much for posting this, Norfolknet, and thanks to all who took the time to read it. ~ Amanda Torrey, www.amandatorrey.com

  • 6/7 10:31pm   Another thought about injured turtles (and other wildlife). The Wildlife Center in So. Weymouth run by Dr. Greg Mertz is somewhere you can bring injured turtles or other wildlife. I have brought animals there at least 3 times in the past. One of Dr. Mertz's passions is turtles/reptiles. I also recently traveled to No. Dighton with a starling that had fallen to the ground from the outdoor ceiling eaves at a movie theater. The baby could not yet hardly walk and apparently starling moms will not feed a baby on the ground. That place is called The Place for Wild Birds and one of their specialties is song birds. The last time I brought a bird to Kathy there was nearly 10 years ago. While there last week, a red tailed hawk baby (pretty good sized baby) was brought in with a broken wing after an owl attacked the nest. The bird was going to have its wing surgically pinned. None of these places in my opinion are too far to travel to try to save a life.

  • 6/7 10:02pm   To EF and other concerned about the turtles: I spoke with Tom Benedetti, Bob McGee's foreman at the DPW, a very nice guy, who told me that there are in fact a number of signs around town. I've never seen them, but I don't get around town much. Oddly, there was never a sign put on 115, which is the location I called the Con Comm about several times last year, and here people are talking about 115 again. One sign is still available and they will put it on 115, just south of 1A, before Fore Kicks. I assume this is the spot on 115 people have been talking about, as this is where I saw a huge turtle trying to cross one day (last year), which turned up squashed the next. I tried to help her but the curbs are so high nowadays, it was just hopeless. I reluctantly gave up and went home. We need another sign for the northbound side of 115. I am looking into ways to obtain it. Evidntly the existing signs were paid for by the Conservation Commision, and good for them.
EF, I was planning to contact you, as Tom tells me you were very instrumental in getting the most recent signs established. He said that in previous years they were stolen. Terrible behavior! Perhaps you can help me get that last sign put on 115.

  • 6/4 10:12pm   To MG & Sons - Kudos to you for helping out the turtles!! I completely agree about cars slowing down and helping them out. It amazes me how some people will pay no attention to a helpless animal crossing the road, hard-shelled or furry. It's not that hard to put the brakes on and take a few seconds to allow them to pass by. I am always on the look out for the turtles and will stop and help them across. Let's hope others will take notice and do the same. Thank you for posting your comments!!

  • 6/4 9:58pm   To quote PT who identified Rep. Ed Markey as a "lifetime politician who (is) already collecting Social Security and who has a poor voting records in the Congress..." (Exact quote).
Perhaps PT might do well to read the following legislative "bio" of Rep. Markey before commenting on the gentleman's record(s)..
Those men and women, and there are many on both sides of "the Aisle", who dedicate their lives in service to our country deserve to be recognized and commended for their dedication and honest, hard work, and not mis-represented for political gain by way of mean spirited and uninformed critiques.
PLEASE NOTE: After reading the below article, please go to the the official government link to the complete list at the bottom of this posting entitled: "Legislation Sponsored or Cosponsored by Edward J. Markey"
The below information is fact, not fiction.
EXCERPTED FROM: HUFFINGTON POST RSS Feed (Direct Quote): www.huffingtonpost.com/rep-ed-markey/#

"REP. ED MARKEY: ...Edward J. Markey has constructed an extraordinary legislative record since his first election to the United States Congress in 1976. As one of the most senior Members in Congress, he has shaped more than 20 years of telecommunications policy while championing consumer rights, health reform, the elimination of large monopolies, the conservation of environmental resources, the reduction of nuclear threats and the strengthening of our homeland security. He is one of the most informed voices in Congress concerning both energy and environmental policy, and he has consistently championed consumer rights, clean tech, energy efficiency and environmental protection.

Rep. Markey's legislative record spans the breadth of Congressional policymaking reflecting his position as a senior member of three key committees: the Natural Resources Committee, where he currently serves as Ranking Member, the Energy and Commerce Committee, and the Committee on Homeland Security. Markey also had the honor of Chairing the House Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming during the 110th and 111th Congresses.

  • 6/4 9:33pm   ALL: What is this "salter" term you mentioned in DT's post? I can't find it, using my trusty Find on this Page. Also, the the song of laud to our Leader was all over the news... unless you only listen to certain TV and radio stations, and even then I suppose some would have featured it in a very supportive way. The refrain went like this: "Barack Hussein Obama! Mmm, mmm, mmm!" (The latter as if to indiate he is so amazing that you have no words to express your appreciation; that you are almost puzzled by the enormity of it all). Maybe the news will be more balanced now that the AP got burned. Imagine biting the hand that feeds you... mmm, mmm, mmm.

  • 6/4 9:32pm   MG: God bless you for helping those turtles. The TOWN should be adressing this. We have an elementary school that looks like an indoor mall from the outside, a huge library from which I can't ever get what I want since I don't read popular fiction or books about child-rearing (OK, that's a bit of exaggeration, but I virtually never can find what I want over there), and mother turtles are getting squashed!! • 6/4 9:25pm   PR: Great to see you are continuing to not let the facts get in the way of your argument. HOD does a very simple observation of Memorial Day and Freeman does the larger one. This year at FK : Representative Dan Winslow spoke as well as the head of the American Legion - so it wasn't some little impromptu gathering. And school does get out on Friday the 21st. You are not looking at the District calendar but the school committee calendar that was originally voted on as an estimate showing 5 snow days. And just so you know, the Norfolk PUBLIC schools are not parochial - so while they may try to have Good Friday off to allow families extra time to travel over the Easter weekend, it isn't done to observe a particular religious event. (The Norfolk Schools don't close on Yom Kippur, Kwanza, or any other religious holiday either.) That being said (and I will spell it out since [some may] not bother to do the research before [...] posting) the school, when it did decide to make it a half day, also announced that any child who needed to stay home to celebrate Good Friday could do so and it would be an excused absence.
I am not sure where all this anger is coming from. Our schools do a great job promoting America and being patriotic. They say the Pledge of Allegiance every day and celebrate our great nation throughout the year. I suppose you can't please everyone but that is what makes America great - if you don't like the Norfolk Public Schools you can move to another town, send your child to a private school, or you can home school your child if you feel that is better. The choice is yours. That is what freedom is all about.

  • 6/4 8:38pm   I know it has been said already, but it needs repeating again. Please be aware of turtles crossing roadways to lay their eggs. They could be crossing at any time during the day or night. They may walk a few steps and then pancake out in the middle of a road from exhaustion. If they are snapping turtles, they may be carrying 20-30 eggs the size of ping pong balls. And they travel a good distance to find a spot to lay their eggs and then they return from where they came. So please when you are driving, be sure to watch the road in front of you and give these guys a chance to live. A snapper will usually continue on its way if you walk behind it. It is important that they stay in the direction they are headed. If you find an aquatic turtle laying eggs in your yard, you can protect the eggs also (info can be found online) and give the babies a chance at life by getting them to water once they hatch. Some of these turtles are very old and it is such a shame to see them killed when many of the deaths can be avoided. Injured wildlife can be brought TUFTS in Grafton which is only about a 40 minute ride. There are some new turtle crossing signs up and more are needed. Hopefully there will be an article or two in local papers about the plight of the turtles.

  • 6/2 12:46pm   Hello Norfolk Residents and beyond. I was driving around my neighborhood today and noticed some political signs supporting Rep Edward Markey. I need to get this off my chest.
Whether you are a Democrat or Republican, you have to really think about this election.
Lets look at Ed Markey: 38 years in Congress. Really hasn't done much. Collecting $175K large a year, plus he signed up for Social Security. He has that right. Never really had a private sector job to prove his worth. Hasn't really lived in this state for over 20 years. He inherited his house from his dad in 2000. Still hasn't lived there. Married a Clinton White House worker and bought a large manse in the DC area. Good for him. Didn't serve in the military. A typical long term career politician.
Ok, lets look at Gabriel Gomez. A son of legal immigrants from South America. Decided to enlist in his adopted country's armed forces. Did very well, became a Navy Pilot. Served proudly. Went to Harvard Business School, earned a degree. Entered the world of high finance and did very well building a nice life for him and his family. He wants to take a cut in pay and give back to his country by serving in the Senate.
Please give this election some thought. Its only a short term, remember, who ever gets elected will have to do it again in less than 2 years.
So who do you want: The lifetime politician who already collecting Social Security and who has a poor voting records in the Congress. Or A Military veteran who has proved his worth in service and private sector.
I hope we make the right choice. Remember, we already have a Senator who earned 34kK a year as a part time college professor and lied about her heritage.
    It's your choice.
    Thank you and God Bless.

  • 6/2 12:31pm   JP,DL,SCD - Nice to hear from you. I am not sure if anyone who attended a public school in USA in the 1970's or 1980's would have called the unrehearsed previously unscheduled (I called the school district to ask about it on 5/20) get together around the flag pole a Memorial Day Assembly. It was a sing-a-long with the teachers and the administration leading the way. Good Friday was originally scheduled as a no school day. In March the superintendent told us the reason Good Friday was now going to be a school day was because it would allow the children to end school on a Friday. Looking at the same website that didn't mention the "Memorial Day Assembly" I see the students attending school until Tuesday, that is different than what we were told in March.

  • 6/2 12:30pm   Re: Memorial Day My husband and I were heading home on 1A from our cemetary visit on Monday, Memorial Day, and suddenly found our car stuck in the worst traffic jam at the Wrentham Outlets. We could not believe our eyes - cars all the way to both horizons! Can we not have just ONE DAY in 365, of quiet reflection on the losses of our sisters and brothers, and their sacrifices for the human race? It's such an important lesson for our young people, and instead we take them SHOPPING?! I can understand having a big family gathering and meal, because that is part of what people sacrifice for: a chance for all of us to be together, sharing food and fun, but, seriously- SHOPPING?! That could have been done Saturday or even Sunday. We are free to do as we please, of course, but please think long and hard about why that is even possible, before you go shopping on Memorial Day, and ask yourself if it's the right thing to do.

  • 6/2 12:14pm   CS, You're taking the common sense comment I made way to liberally. My main point was that teachers are part of a union. These unions have agendas and not in the best interest of the students. Being part of a union means voting in your best interest both in the union and at the public polls. If you don't think that teachers have their own interests in mind as they're molding students minds so be it. I see it differently and we'll have to agree to disagree.

  • 5/28 10:18pm   AB-G, DT, LD: I will keep this reply short. You have all thrown "red herrings" so far (google for definition). You have yet to address my fundamental point, which is that you are all blaming teachers for what you perceive as societal failures. I still submit that teachers cannot be responsible for every aspect of raising successful children. Teachers cannot be responsible for teaching common sense. Teachers cannot be responsible for matters over which they have no control. Teachers can teach our children many subjects and life lessons, and they do so every day. Why the three of you fail to explain why you hold teachers in such contempt for what you perceive to be a generational problem is still unclear. Perhaps that is a question you are either avoiding or are unprepared to answer. After all, it is far too easy to blame the teachers.

  • 5/28 10:09pm   Well, JD, thanks for letting us know about the turtle. Last year I don't know how many times I begged the Conservation Comm to do something to help those turtles.. Marie told me it was the DPW's job and that she had called them, but no sign ever appeared.. I guess I'll go over there myself. A turtle was trying to get across 115 just south of 1A. I got out of the car and tried to help her, but she was huge and I was afraid of getiing bitten. I don't know why the modern curbs are so high. There were also bales of hay at the top of a ravine while they were working over there. She couldn't get over the curb, and the next day there she was mashed and dead. You're right, there either was or was supposed to be a sign near Castle, but it wasn't big or eye-catching. A turtle got caught and was found dead in a soccer net over on the Pond St. grounds. You can't prevent everything but they are big enough to drive around; you're right about that.

  • 5/28 9:50pm   In response to PR's post: Please note it is important to check facts before judgement is passed. I couldn't agree more that it is extremely important to take the time to acknowledge those who have sacrificed so much for our freedom (especially with our younger generation). This is why the H. Olive Day School did take the time on Friday afternoon to have an assembly outside surrounding the American flag. All grades were in attendance; remembrances made, a moment of silence and patriotic songs. I would know, as I was there. The Freeman-Kennedy School also took the time to remember this important day. I could not imagine otherwise.

  • 5/28 4:40pm   JH, Not too long ago there were a few posts on here talking about teachers from King Phillip withholding recommendations for students applying to college. Please forgive me for not knowing the date of these posts. The fact is, unions do have an agenda all their own. That's fantastic you can't find the agenda in your kids' homework from King Phillip schools, but don't let that cloud your judgement of public schools in general. Just after Obama was elected there were news reports and video of young public school children singing Obama songs that the teachers made up. (I don't remember any students singing songs about Bush, nor Kennedy for that matter). So I thank God King Phillip schools are sticking to a non partisan agenda. Maybe the rest of the country could follow that lead.

  • 5/28 4:38pm   Re H. Olive Day activities. Memorial day observance is for Sunday/Monday: a parade etc. As for good Friday: remember Easter came at an odd time on the calendar. Also for perspective: many schools actually are in session Monday and Even Saturdays to make up snow days. And finally an elementary school calendar is not your moral compass for your life and observances. I believe I worked every Memorial Day for a decade without daring to ask my employer for the day.

  • 5/23 8:44pm   Hello, CS. I agree it's tedious and boring to go back and search specifics in the Net. It's certainly not as easy and fun as tossing around accusations of bullying. Am I not allowed to criticize my own group when I perceive they've made mistakes? I taught common sense when I had a chance. It might have come up in class in the context of a reading, while we were chatting between classes or after school, or any time at all, really. No one's talking about a class in common sense. There were regular, suclasses where these was a tremendous amount of left-leaning indoctrination going on, believe it or not.
As far as that remark regarding making a judgement on their behavior, I didn't mention the behavior. There was screaming and shouting, cursing, sexual harrassment, provocation and, yes, even "petty foolishness", if I may borrow a phrase, that simply didn't belong in school, just to name a few. You're right that teaching common sense should be the domain of the parents, but that's assuming the parents have common sense. Many of the parents of my students were, let's say, very skewed in their notion of what a contributing, dignified member of society should do and think. Those were the ones who showed up for voluntary meetings to take a stand, often accompanied by several like-minded relatives with no previous committment, just to make sure they were "heard" (that's code for: "intimidate the teacher").
You're right CS. My statement about teachers no longer teaching values was too broad. When I started teaching in Roxbury, where most of the teachers were middle-aged or older blacks, common sense was preached daily. That diminished as time went on. A minority of us persevered but, as I said, most were silenced by the young and enlightened headmasters who were offended by value judgements and thought it underminded the parents' role by suggesting their belief system wasn't the right one. Also, they just couldn't bear to be called "hater" or "racist" by some of the youngsters, so they held their tongues. I don't remember them being offended. I think they just didn't want to get an unsatisfactory rating.

  • 5/23 8:39pm   CS, You talk about AB-G butting in and yet you chose to throw in your two cents without reading all of the relevent posts? Years ago I tried to join a union. I went in to meet with the head union guy. I was told I would get leads for jobs and would have to go and get the job myself. With a non-union shop. After I got the job, a month or so later, they would give me union flyers to pass around the shop. I would have been called a "pepper". His hope is that I would be fired so the union would be able to slap a law suit on the shop and put them out of business. The unions have a lot of money for this type of, we'll call it shananigans for lack of a better term. I chose not to try to put some poor guy, who worked his whole life to build his business, out of business. All unions have an agenda, besides better pay for workers. Sorry to say, it's a fact. Public employees should not be able to unionize. There is an alternate agenda even if you refuse to see it.

  • 5/23 8:29pm   Hi DT - That's a great question. In reviewing the material, there was in fact no mention of climate change at all, using that term, global warming, nor any other.
Didn't mention Al Gore, carbon emissions from driving Hummers, Big Oil. Nothing of the kind.
So I'm still trying to find the agenda that the teachers union has been propagandizing to our impressionable young minds. In thinking about it further, perhaps the significance of the message is in its omission. By not teaching about climate change, the teachers union is actually delivering the message that climate change doesn't exist and isn't an actual problem.
Previously, I didn't really think of that as a lefty agenda, but those liberal moonbats sure are crazy these days, you can never tell.

  • 5/23 8:28pm   CS: If you're going to make statements, and claim them as fact (e.g. 1. "Please note, nobody ever insinuated that you were "a drunken idiot or uneducated" and; 2. "Also, to be fair, your posts do have numerous spelling and grammatical errors. Again, I did not make this an issue, you did") then you should be doing your research. Neither of your statements is accurate, as I clearly pointed out in my previous post. Funny how you didn't acknowledge that. If you "have neither the time nor the inclination" to avoid misrepresenting the facts, then perhaps you should be following your grandparents' advice and mind your own bees-wax.

  • 5/20 12:25pm   AB-G and LD: I have neither the time, nor the inclination, to go searching NorfolkNet for such specifics. I also do not have the time, nor the interest, to search past posts that are weeks or months old for single sentences, as you both suggest. My reply to DT was rational, not personal and substantive. Funny how neither of you mentioned that. I also find it ironic that AB-G, who is seemingly a life-long educator, does not take exception to the mis-characterization of teachers as a source of society's problems. AB-G, were you responsible for teaching students common sense? DT says you were. Did you too fail at it as DT implies?
AB-G - here is quote from one of your posts that I also find relevant. "As of six years ago, when I would make any value judgement regarding behavior, most of my students would look at me as if I were insane or with indignation". Maybe these kids were smarter and had more Common Sense than you gave them credit for. Did you consider that? This is preceded by your sentence that teachers no longer teach values. This is another broad, sweeping statement that is deeply offensive to educators everywhere. It is sad that a teacher, such as yourself, is the person making this statement.
AB-G and DT, you should really reassess what the agreed upon role of teachers is before faulting them for the petty foolishness (crossing the street, riding a bike) that you claim teachers are responsible for. I would prefer our teachers stick to the traditional subjects, such as reading, writing, mathematics, science, foreign languages, art, gym, music, history, computer science, economics, etc., while they leave the "common sense" to the parents. Is this unreasonable? Reading the long list of subjects that teachers are already responsible for, when do we fit in a class called "common sense"? If you figure it out, please share. Also, how would you both suggest we grade students in "Common Sense", and what do we do if they fail (according to your standards)?

  • 5/19 11:17am   Wondering why is Norfolk awash in pink balloons today? It is our special way of remembering our friend Taylor Manning. Taylor passed away unexpectedly one year ago today. • 5/19 11:06am   CS: Be very specific in your assertion re who the "real bully" is, please. Quotes would be much appreciated. I mean this. You can use the "Find on This Page" if you wish.
There are many who bully subtly and not-so-subtly, on this page. So before you accuse me alone, reread some of the pos ts directed at DT. Try using the "Find on this page" if you have it. Did I hit a nerve by implying that (I can't remember the initials) was trying to bully DT and get him to stop his remarks? Does it have to do with one's opinion whether or not a post is to be summarily classified as bullying? BB's remark about Coor's was gratuitous and over the line. Is he/she a bully? Yes, it is fine to agree to disagree. Not everyone shares THAT world-view on here. If we all minded our own business this forum would be a lot smaller. Please do not tell me or anyone else to mind their own business. Someone might consider you a - well, you know - a bully.

  • 5/16 12:27am   I am a little late in jumping in on the drugs at the school conversations. They were interesting to read. Drugs in schools are everywhere - private and public. I found the conversation around the schools covering up the drug issues and not getting the police involved disturbing. After the 7th grader who was dealing drugs incident I was particularly rattled when my kids who attend KPMS asked what type of police punishment did the boys get and it appears to be none, at least for one of the two boys. With all the DARE education they have been taught that these type of actions are serious offenses then the school should definitely follow through with these teachings. Otherwise, it makes it OK to keep doing it in our schools. I think the punishment at the schools end should be just a serious. I was very disappointed to see that one of the boys was out playing on the baseball team like a hero to his peers. And if it is not the police and not the schools where is the parents' involvement and correction?

  • 5/16 12:26am   OK. A compliment and complaint to the town of Norfolk. The compliment is on the on line bill paying system in place in that there is one. I just went on line to renew our dump stickers. However, two huge complaints about it. One, you don't take a Visa credit card. Really? And two, I got slapped with a $2.50 fee not by transaction but by the number of vehicles?!!! That is ridiculous.

  • 5/16 12:25am   Norfolk Lions 50/50 Golf Ball Drop
Weather forecast for Norfolk Community Day 2013: It will be raining golf balls at mid-afternoon!
How would you like a chance to win up to $1000 or $250 and support local charities at the same time? Buy one of the Norfolk Lion's charity golf balls for $10.00. This year up to 250 numbered golf balls will be sold and two prizes will be awarded.
At 3:00 on Norfolk Community Day, all numbered balls will be placed in a container and dropped 40 feet from the top of the Norfolk Fire Dept ladder truck. The balls will fall onto a 100 foot circle painted on the grass with a pin in the center. The ball closest to the pin wins $1000 and the second closest ball wins $250. The remaining $1250 will be donated to Norfolk charities to be named at a later date.
In the unlikely event of a tie, the winnings will be split. The Norfolk Police Dept will monitor judging. You do not have to be present to win.
With only 250 balls sold, your odds of winning are fantastic, so hurry and get yours. The Norfolk Lions will be selling golf balls at the Norfolk Recycling/Transfer Station on Saturday, June 1 from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and at the Pond Street Complex on Sunday, June 2 from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. They will also be on sale at Community Day, if not already sold out.
You must be 18 or older to participate. Norfolk Lions and their families are eligible to enter.
Norfolk Community Day 2013 will take place on Saturday, June 8, 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., at the Holmes family property, 22 Myrtle St., Norfolk.

    Greetings!

Well, it took long enough, but I finally have a name. I'm Bill E. Shakesbeare and I reside at the Norfolk Public Library. I was given my name by Andrew Obara and Kate Crump, winners of the name the bear contest.

It's an awesome name because I'm named after one of the greatest authors of all time... Mr. William Shakespeare! I got my library card yesterday and the first book I'm going to read is William Shakespeare: His Life & Times. I guess I should learn everything I can about my namesake!

I hope everyone will join me in the library's great summer reading fun this year. I plan to sign up as soon as registration opens on June 27th! I've heard that Ms. Marissa is planning some fabulous programs for children & teens and Mrs. Glasser has some great things planned for all the grown-ups too!

Stop by and say hello when you're in the library.

    Sincerely yours,
    Bill E. Shakesbeare

He showed up when he said he would, and he and his crew worked each day until they were done with no fooling around. My yard now looks terrific, and I know I can count on Garrick to keep it nice looking all season long. If you missed his post, you can reach him at: croninlandscaping@gmail.com or at 774.218.0363. • 5/15 10:55pm   DT: It is a shame that you have misstated the dialogue that ensued after you insulted teachers. Please note, nobody ever insinuated that you were "a drunken idiot or uneducated" (your words, not mine). I do not feel that you are either, frankly. We may disagree about your opinions, but never would I attack your character like that. I do not even know you. Also, to be fair, your posts do have numerous spelling and grammatical errors. Again, I did not make this an issue, you did. Nowhere did I mention either in my responses. We all type quickly these days. As a result, there are often auto-corrections, misspellings and grammatical errors that result. I would never attribute this writing style as a failure of yours personally.
To get to the real point, we can respectfully disagree about the role of teachers in what you perceive as a societal failure. That is fair, no? I don't care if you are on the left, right, or in the middle. My points were valid, well constructed and in no way insulting to you personally. We simply must agree to disagree on matters like "common sense", and the role that teachers play regarding related life long skills.
There is a quote, "Common Sense is the Least Common of All Senses". In other words, common sense is not often taught, rather it is learned through life experiences; many of which are outside of the classroom. Holding teachers accountable for what you perceive to be a lack of common sense among young people (with a broad brush too) is unfair. Many community members contribute to teaching common sense - parents, neighbors, clergy, coaches, teachers, police, etc..
If you find that my points are an unfair attack on your opinions as "someone with left leaning views", there is nothing more I can offer. Never was any offense meant when I defended teachers. I am still trying to understand your latest posts. My reason for following up is simply to point out that our children, and their teachers, are not nearly as misguided as you mischaracterize them as being. Again, I am NOT a teacher, nor a union member, but I am a parent who appreciates all that others do to help my children grow and mature into productive adults.
I also find it ironic that AB-G, who is the real person trying to bully others, is so quick to jump into these discussions. My grand-parents had a saying, "mind your own bees-wax", that just may resonate. Respectfully,
    - CS

  • 5/15 10:54pm   DT: No thanks needed but much appreciated. Again, when my enlightened, young headmaster swept in to right the wrongs of our "mean and racist" school (which was much loved by the those of our students who were actually trying to get an education in an atmosphere of relative quiet [and don't tell me they were too young or innocent to know any better]), it was all peace, love and brotherhood until you disagreed. Then you had it run down your throat in short order. Good for you to continue to stand up. Lots of people are mortified and silenced by such remarks.
    - AB-G

  • 5/15 10:54pm   PB: Well, that is certainly demoralizing news about the town "leaders" trying to shut any of us up and then trying to find out who it was. I can just imagine who it was. This brings to mind Devolve who had one of his minions call Shaunna O'Connel to supress her various remarks about welfare payments and EBT abuse, then denying it and implying she was making the call up, of all things. She then gets a call to her cell, which gave ample proof of the call from his office. Thanks very much anyway for the post; we absolutely need to know these things. And thank you, Andras, for not giving him/ her up.

  • 5/15 10:53pm   On April 26 and 27 the Friends of the Norfolk Public Library Book and Bake Sale had another successful sale. The final results are in, and it looks like we will have netted $18,000 - a little more than last year, and certainly a substantial amount to help the library provide its many services.
The planning for the sale is actually a year-long event. Volunteers divide the responsibilities which begin with the sorting of the close to 30,000 books which are donated and brought to the Friends' closet at the library and the Friends' bin at the town transfer station. For many years Maureen and Conrad Buck, who retired from this most important task recently, have sorted, boxed, labeled, and transported these books with the help of our ``Schleppers'' and ``Trailer Tramps,`` Don Hansen, John Creeden, Steve Brylinski, Warren Bergerson, and Bob Vallee to a trailer located behind the DPW garage. The Friends have placed a special plaque dedicating the reading room of the library to honor Maureen and Conrad who have given so many years of service to the library. Thank you Maureen and Conrad. We couldn't have survived without you.
Another very important and unsung hero is the publicity chairperson, Judy Ross. She begins in the fall making sure that our ``very big book sale from our small town'' is advertised in such places as Yankee Magazine and Book Sale Finder both of which require very early submissions. She continues through the year sending press releases to local newspapers, as well as the Boston Globe, church and school bulletins, and local organizations. In addition she helps to get signs, flyers, and advertising cards printed, and our banner repaired and edited. Thank you, Judy.
Kudos also to Beth Vallee, our treasurer, who not only planned the layout of tables at the DPW garage, she also solicited for volunteers, greeted them when they arrived, showed them what to do, answered everyone's questions, and generally had to be in a million places at once. She even laundered the Friends' aprons and the table covers and provided the tape, scissors, magnets and other small needs for our sale.
The main planning begins in January. The Friends' committee meets to divide up the tasks necessary to make the sale a success. This year's committee was Karen Gallup, Judy Ross, Pat Brylinsky, Sally Eykel, Anne Hansen, Thayer Olson, Deanna Grimm, Barbara Byron, Beth Vallee, Beverly Baldoni, Emily Nicodemus, Rich Tedoldi, Bridget Irish, Jodi Pappas and Susan Nelson. Throughout January, February, March and April the committee meets to plan and execute the Book and Bake Sale. We wish to give a special shout out to Emily Nicodemus who joined us last year and has spent many hours creating the signage for the sale.
On Wednesday just before the Friday and Saturday sale, volunteers began the herculean task of moving books from the trailer to the DPW garage. Paul Vito and the DPW workers have hosted our sale for many years. They are beyond helpful, by cleaning out the garage and by helping with a fork lift to move many of the books from the trailer to the garage. Then with the help of Boy Scout Troop 80, and Girl Scout Troop 3616, the set up began. The energy and conscientiousness of these scouts helped the older crew to set up tables and moved the books to the assigned tables in record time. The boy scouts were led by Keith Yatsuhashi, and girl scouts were led by Tara Spellman. But this was just the beginning of their assistance because on Friday and Saturday the Boy Scouts, led by Peter O'Neil, again assisted the patrons of the sale by storing books for our patrons, carrying their books to the cashier and to their cars. Patrons appreciated and praised their speedy and courteous help. The Girl Scouts of Troop 74746 helped with the collection of bake sale items, and Girl Scouts of Troop 3616 also assisted at the bake table and organized the book tables as well. At the end of the sale, of course, when it is time to break down the tables and box up the remaining books, the scouts and their leaders pitched in along with other volunteers and made very quick work of the cleanup. Thank you to the leaders and the scouts for their conscientious, energetic, and courteous hard work.
The book and bake sale requires many volunteers during the sale itself. They are cashiers, table watchers, and guides for our patrons. Many volunteers provide bake goods, often more than one item. We raised the most ever from this years' bake sale. Often volunteers come back year after year, and we thank all of them for their ongoing help.
And finally we wish to thank all of the citizens of Norfolk who donate their books to the library and come out for the sale. Many town libraries are struggling from budget cuts and apathy, but the people of Norfolk use and support the Norfolk Public Library, and the Friends of the library and the library staff are deeply appreciative of their continued support.
Thank you to everyone who participated either by working, or by baking, or by shopping. And to those of you who did all three, and many did, a special thank you for helping to make this a very successful Book and Bake Sale.
    - Barbara Byron, Book and Bake Sale Committee

  • 5/15 10:50pm   The Friends of the Norfolk Public Library held a Book and Bake Sale on April 26 and 27 at the DPW garage in Norfolk. We want to send a special thank you to the businesses and organizations that made monetary donations or that provided services for our sale. Thank you to Norfolk Town Pizza for donating pizzas for our volunteers. Kudos again for Roche Brothers who provided several trays of gourmet quality treats as well as paper and plastic bags. Thanks to Provo Liquor, Eagle Brook, and Norfolk Auto for lending hand -carts to make our lifting so much easier. Thanks to Linda's Variety for the ice and Dunkin Donuts for the munchkins.
Once again, 100% of our expenses (table rentals, advertising, etc.) have been paid for by the monetary donations from local business sponsors. This means that 100% of the income from the sale itself will be used to directly support our wonderful Norfolk Public Library.

  • 5/12 11:59am   LB: I was surprised when I read your post. The Town Census is mailed out along with two forms (volunteer form and dog license form) by our mail house every January. Considering we receive over 1300 dog licenses returned with the Town Census (every year) - I am confident that at least most people are receiving all three forms. In addition, we do not mail out bills so I am not sure who mailed you a bill with a late fee included but it wasn't from our office. The only other thing we have mailed out in the past are post cards with a reminder to license your dog and this year (in an effort to save money) we did a community wide phone call reminding people to license their dog. We also posted this in the paper, facebook, norfolknet, and anywhere else we could think of in the hopes of getting the word out and help people avoid paying a late fee. And the "astronomic" late fee of $15 is a Town Bylaw that was voted by all the residents of Norfolk who opted to attend Town Meeting. (FYI: It pales in comparison to Wrentham's $150 late fee).
Also, since you state that you never know when your dog license is due: dogs are licensed on a calendar basis, so if your license says 2012, then your dog's license expired on December 31, 2012 and needs to be relicensed by January 1, 2013. (But no late fee is incurred until May 1st - and again, I must say that I think a 4 month grace period is quite reasonable) This is also a Town By-Law and has been so for quite some time. Town By Laws can be viewed at www.virtualnorfolk.org and by clicking on the by laws link on the Town Clerk's page. I hope that clears up some of your confusion and helps you avoid any future late fees. Thank you,
    - Shawn Dooley, Town Clerk

  • 5/12 11:57am   To all the people whom disagree with me, You have yet to give a well thought out, respectful response to my opinions. Calling me basically a drunken idiot and uneducated. You are all entitled to your opinion, of which, instead of responding in an intelligent manner you resort to name calling and calling into question my education and character. Just goes to show, if you have a differing opinion than someone on the left you will just be dismissed as (refer to above). I am willing to read and contemplate thoughtfully, ANY intelligent, well thought out responses. Please, tell me why I am wrong.
And please save the typo corrections for the classroom and the name calling for pre-schoolers.

  • 5/12 11:56am   All lawsuits are public record, the 2 major lawsuits against the town are directly against the building department and Paul Steves the plumbing inspector.
I discussed this topic on Norfolknet before and the town was not happy, they made the web master pull my posts and tried to get my info from him.
It's just sad that the town will still employ someone who causes so much legal action. Paul Steevs should not inspect in this town or anyother town.
    - PB

  • 5/12 11:55am   AB - Regarding your concerns about the lack of details on lawsuits pending against the town; as you may know, parties to a law suit are, or at least should be, restricted on what they can discuss on that case. Frankly I am happy that Mr. Hathaway did not answer the question more fully and and potentially prejudice the town's position.

  • 5/8 10:34pm   MP - regarding the schools, my family has been out of the system for over 10 years, so I cannot comment. However, from a purely personal experience, I understand your pain, anguish, fear and frustration. Recently read "Clean" by David Scheff, which may be helpful. You are not alone - small comfort, but you are not alone. I wish you and your family peace and comfort tonight.

  • 5/8 10:30pm   The Annual SADD Walk of Tears in loving memory of Maura Howard, a graduate of King Philip High School and Amy Callaghan of Franklin High School, both victims of drunk driving, will take place at King Philip Regional High School on Sunday, May 19, 2013.
Registration begins at 10:30 am with an 11:00 am start in front of the main entrance.
The SADD Chapter (Students Against Destructive Decisions) will fund scholarships at both King Philip and Franklin High Schools. This event has raised and passed out thousands of scholarship dollars to worthy SADD members at both high schools.
The walk is approximately 3 miles and there will be refreshments and water available.
Please join the Walk and unite with us in this very worthy cause against needless injuries and deaths caused by destructive decisions.
Thank you from the students of King Philip and Franklin High Schools. Rain or shine, we hope to see everyone there!

  • 5/8 10:29pm   I was surprised but happy that [DR] managed to slip in that question about current lawsuits. What puzzled me was, first, why the town counsel didn't field the question and, second, why it was "inappropriate" to mention any lawsuits at Town Meeting, of all places. Jack Hathaway looked extremely uncomfortable. I don't think DR was going to press him for details which might have compromised the case, but if he had, Jack could have easily declined to elaborate. The town counsel and any lawsuits we lose are paid for by the Norfolk taxpayers, no?

  • 5/8 10:26pm   MP - First of all I hope you are able to acquire the help you need with your son to battle his addiction. I for one, appreciate the time you took to inform the parents of students at KPHS about the drug problem there. I really didn't believe it to be as serious as you have described. I have a feeling there's been an absence of leadership at KP since the departure of Mr. Flahive. The union has gotten so strong it's incredible. Can you image the head of the union telling his union members not to write recommendation letters for current students ( except of course for his son who was also a student) because of a contract issue? The sport budget meeting last week at KP was a joke. The parents came prepared and Ms. Oliveria was so embarrassed she had to walk off the stage to compose herself. Mr. Shairer's face looked like a bowl of Campbell's Tomato soup he was so bothered by the drilling the parents gave the administration.

  • 5/8 10:24pm   Mark your calendar for two popular upcoming events at Norfolk's Senior Center sponsored by the Norfolk Council on Aging and the Friends of the Norfolk Council on Aging. On Friday May 31st from 4 p. m. to 8 p. m. it will be "Antiques Night." Bob Graboski of Kingsbury Antiques, who has over 40 years experience in antiques appraisal, will conduct his highly informative and entertaining version of PBS'S "Antiques Road Show." Participants (observers are also welcome to attend) will be charged a minimal fee of $5.00 for appraisals limited to two items. Sorry, no stamps, coins (unless gold), paintings, sports trading cards, stuffed chairs, or heavy furniture. The rule of thumb is if one person can carry it, it should be okay to bring. For further information, call (508) 528-4430. On Friday, June 7th, the Center will hold its Spring Art Show, a special event saluting the creativity and talents of Norfolk seniors along with a variety of local artisans. Included in the all-day program (1 p. m. to 8:00 p. m.) will be the diverse watercolor works of those who have participated in the weekly classes conducted by instructor Tina Addison (who will also be displaying her own work) and the colorful knit designs of the Senior Center's very own "Knitwits." As there is no admission fee, visitors are simply encouraged to donate a canned or non-perishable item for the local pantry. For those interested in displaying their own art work or would like further information, contact Tina Addison at (508) 369-6754 or email her at tinagoodfood@yahoo.com. The Norfolk Senior Center (508) 528-4430) is located at 28 Medway Branch Road and is open Monday thru Friday from 9 a. m. to 4 p. m.

  • 5/8 10:23pm   The Norfolk Lions would like to announce that in response to the terrible events of Monday, April 15, at the finish line of the Boston Marathon, the Lions of Massachusetts in conjunction with Lions International are welcoming donations to a Lions Marathon Disaster Fund in preparation for the coming days when we will be working to provide assistance to those injured and impacted by the events of that tragic day.
Lions anticipate that the need will extend from those directly injured by the explosions, to those families who lost loved ones and to the first responders who worked tirelessly attending to the injured, witnessing the kinds of injuries normally seen on the battlefield, not on the streets of Boston.
The unfortunate and tragic events of recent years from 9/11 in New York, to Hurricane Sandy in New York and New Jersey and the terror in Newtown, Connecticut have shown us the many kinds of assistance that Lions have and will once again be called upon to provide. The Lions of Massachusetts stand ready to do its part to help those in need and on their road to recovery.
Donation checks can be made payable to the Massachusetts Lions Disaster Relief Fund and can be sent to: Council Secretary Richard Braks, P.O. Box 546, Templeton, Massachusetts 01468
All Lions clubs, locally within Massachusetts and globally, have joined in this effort. We welcome your donations.

  • 5/8 10:22pm   To MP. Wow, that took alot of courage to post that post. I am sure people are appalled! There is no drug problem in our community!!!
Dig your heads in the sand a little deeper people. Our son had a drug problem and we are thankful he has gotten help and is doing better after great effort involving many people. We still have bumps in the road but things are better. I hear of so many of his classmates who are struggling with this problem. It is such a shame.
There is a true problem here... and it is not just Norfolk. Good families, with good parents have kids that are screwed up. It is so sad and so scary.
Parents of middle school kids... watch them very closely. It could happen to your family. Don't think you are immune to this. Just because they are involved in "sports" or "band" doesn't mean they aren't dabbling.
MP, I wish you the best. Sounds like your son needs some serious help which I hope he gets.

  • 5/8 10:21pm   Dear Mr. Dooley, We completed our town census and there was no application for a dog license. In fact we have never seen it submitted with the town census. • 5/8 10:18pm   MP, may I suggest you and your son (and family) get counseling? And that you tell your son you love him very much, which is why you are so upset about what he's been doing. Then pay very close attention to him for as long as it takes to get him back on the right path, and avoid hitting him when he does something wrong. Study books on why kids turn to drugs, so you understand what happened. Figure out how to reach this boy, and do the right thing by him. Yes, this is a lot of work, but he is yours and he is worth it. What goes on at school does not matter - what goes on between you and him is most important.
I wish you the best of luck, perseverance, patience, and kindness.

  • 5/8 10:16pm   For DT: I admire your courage in making that post. I agree about the covering up. At one of the schools I worked for, it was at least apparent that someone had gone to the local police station and told them not to respond to any complaints the teachers made about assault, because no one ever got a call-back from a detective. Good luck with your son.

  • 5/8 10:15pm   Town Meeting starts tonight, Tuesday May 7, at 7 pm in the Middle School. The volunteer Selectmen, volunteer Advisory Board, volunteer Norfolk School Committee, and volunteer King Philip School Committee members have been working for months on a budget to recommend to us. "They" are not forcing us to accept what they recommend, with or without an override.
Town Meeting is a chance for you as a tax payer and registered voter to decide how our tax dollars are spent. We have input regarding setting our tax rate, what the town's money is spent on, and what we decide to do without as the tough financial times continue.
Please attend all of Town Meeting since every article effects our finances and quality of life. Be aware that an article can be brought up and voted on more than once during the same evening of Town Meeting.
Town Meeting starts tonight, Tuesday May 7, at 7 pm in the Middle School - Please attend.

You wait 4 months after the dog license expiration date, fail to even take a quick look at the rules, fail to attend the Town Meeting on this VERY ISSUE last year, or in any other way avail yourself of relevant information before you sign onto a forum to cast seriously misplaced stones? No doubt you would have been equally as "disappointed" had you received a summons to appear at Wrentham District Court for non-payment. • 5/6 11:49pm   TR: I just want to clarify a few facts in response to your post. Dog licenses expire on December 31st of each year and late fees are not charged until you are over 4 months late (not the one day late as you claim in your post - and I think a 4 month grace period is pretty generous). Not to mention, license applications were sent out with your census and I personally did a mass phone call to all residents reminding them that the fines would begin on May 1st. To make the process even easier, we have instituted on-line bill pay and/or you can always mail in the form and we will mail you your dog's license. In addition, this is a Town By-law as voted on by the residents at Town Meeting (not just a random fine) and this was passed unanimously by those who attended Town Meeting. This version of the by-law is much more lenient as the previous by-law had a minimum fine of $50 and that was due on March 1st. Also, dog licensing is required per Massachusetts General Law and pertains to every city/town in the Commonwealth - not just the Town of Norfolk. If you wish to discuss further and have other ideas on how to make this process better, I would be more than happy to listen to your suggestions - please, just call me - as opposed to posting annonymously on Norfolknet.
    Thanks,
    - Shawn Dooley, Town Clerk

  • 5/6 11:44pm   Hi I would like to tell you all a story. Last year my son was dealing drugs, stealing form his family, students at school had skipped school broke into house near school. (which school knew about but didn't notify me) making fires and destroying my house. I went home one morning found him in bed I told him to get up get dressed and go to school. I informed him he was very close to having someone come in the middle of the night and take him to school for troubled teens. I pushed him against a wall and told him to cut the S*#t and gave him a back hand. He got dressed I brought him to school followed him into school to make sure he didn't walk out other door. He went into John Gould's office said I beat him Mr.Gould asked me to leave which I did. When I got to my truck I called Norfolk PD told them what had happened. Mr Gould called Wrentham PD. I was arrested for assault and battery, removed from my house on a restraining order. After that his behavior worsened he was doing what he pleased at home and jeopardizing his younger sisters and mother. This all came to a head when he was arrested again for breaking and entering. At which point I was able to have restraining order modified and called a transport company and had him taken to the school. I did contact the superintendent of schools and asked for financial help with the education part of Ironwood to which she never even had the courtesy to call me back on.
But anyhow that brings us to this year graduated school and was re-enrolled at the King Philip High School in January. Three weeks ago I received a phone call from Mr Gould saying he found him with a container with a dozen or so broken up bags of pot and $200 in cash. He was again dealing, I told him to call police to which he told me he rather not involve the police. I told him to call police. I then went to school where police had been called but Mr Gould was still reluctant to go forth.
So when a kid goes into school and the vice principle can be the hero and protect the student from the "abusive" parent without even knowing what happened he can call the police before parent is even out the door. But when a student is dealing drugs on school property he calls the parent instead of the police. Can someone explain this to me. Only reason I can see is because school does not want to admit there is a drug problem so it is covered up. How many other parents have gotten a drug dealing phone call and not had the courage to do the right thing? He was dealing at school, but he was selling for another student and he is not the only one, and pot is not the only drug - ecstasy, adarol and LSD are present at that school on almost any given day. I have since been informed by a police officer that these "coverups" are not uncommon. You can have all the policies you want on paper and say there is not a problem but there is. Drug/alcohol addiction is a disease of denial and it not just the addict, it is the school that covers it up it is the parent that refuse to see. Mr Gould may have thought he was protecting him I when pushed him, but who is he protecting when he doesn't want to call the police for drug dealing? He isn't protecting the students, he isn't protecting the dealer, the only thing he is protecting is his job and schools reputation.
King Philip has drug problem, like it or not; my son is not the only person dealing, he is selling for another student who has more then just him working for him. If he can break up an once of pot into 30/ 40 $10 bags of pot and get rid of them in a day at the school and say other kids are selling more your school has a drug problem. You have drug policies and say there is no problem because of the policies, but then you hide the problem.

This was voted down last year and now the developer lobby are pushing it again this year. In all honesty, are we that stuck for revenue that we are willing to turn our town into a Windsor Gardens or Dedham Corps. bedroom community swarming with commuters but not adding anything to the heart of this historic and lovely place? Please vote no. Thank you.

  • 5/5 9:05pm   Bad experience at Town Hall this [Weds] morning. Went to register my dog and got hit with $15.00 late fee for being 1 day late. This more than doubles the license fee ($10.00). Horrible. How can they justify this? I was objecting based on principle. There were 2 very elderly women there for whom I am sure this was a significant financial burden. Way to go Norfolk! Disappointing!

  • 5/41 8:57pm   NS, One typo and now I can't spell? I do know the "rule" i before e. It's funny how you're quick to point out one typo and don't want to look at the real problems with this country. And neither, (notice the placement of the i and e) does the left. The economy is tanked and Ed Markey and Liz Warren divert your attension to womans rights, gay rights and gun control. I believe woman have rights, I'm tolerant of gays and there are already enough gun laws that aren't enforced in the first place.
Now let's move on to the real issues of how to balance a budget, how to get the economy moving forward and how we'll be able to afford healthcare in the future. And if you could find some time to teach your kids common sense that would be great.
And CS my points are directed at adults because they teach children and they don't seem to be teaching any common sense. Kids are graduating from college with huge debt right off the bat. Common sense would say, If you can't afford that college you'll have to settle for a cheaper one. But society today says, "reach for the moon and we'll forgive your debt later", the taxpayers can afford it. There is no accountability anywhere anymore.

  • 5/1 10:07pm   DT: I still do not understand why teachers are to blame in your opinion. Your posting is a laundry list of your perceived problems with our country. Many of the points you make are directed at adults, not children. You have some very valid concerns about the direction we are headed economically. I share many of your concerns. We differ on the role of teachers though. They should not be viewed as part of the problem, rather as a possible part of the solution.

  • 5/1 9:49pm   Does anyone have a walker they would be willing to lend out for a couple of weeks? My mom is coming up for a wedding and would prefer not to have to transport her walker in addition to her wheelchair. And I, obviously, would prefer not to buy a walker for just 2 weeks or so! She arrives May 26th and will be here for approximately 2 weeks. Thanks.

  • 5/1 9:47pm   DT - As you voice your concerns about our public school teachers, youth and the state of education, we should also add what a shame it is that you never learned the "i before e, except after c" rule when you were in third grade. Those teachers! When I face my students this morning, I will be sure to add in objectives for my lessons on "bike riding rules" and "crosswalk etiquette". Thank you.

  • 5/1 9:43pm   DT: You are right about teachers not teaching values. As of six years ago, when I would make any value judgement regarding behavior, most of my students would look at me as if I were insane or with indignation. I knew my last headmaster didn't endorse this as he was a hand-wringing, progressive young grad of the Harvard S of Ed (he bolted after 4 years of chaos and nonsense to be a consultant) who would never have wanted us to interfere with their "parents' belief system." Also, there were very few of my colleagues who agreed with me. I can only imagine what it's like now.

This averages about $16 per week for an impressive variety of vegetables, herbs and fruits. Typical offerings include a wide variety of Tomatoes, Beans, Squashes, Cantaloupe, Corn, Broccoli, Herbs, Eggplants, Lettuces, Sweet and Hot Peppers, Mixed Greens, Cucumbers, Onions, Cabbage, Watermelon, Carrots, Beets and more.Produce varies with the growing season. • 4/28 11:51pm   CS, My comments about kids education was not ment to insult anybody. I'm going by what I see day in and day out. Kids riding their bikes on the wrong side of the street, people stepping into crosswalks without looking both ways, and it's on every channel, people way over their heads in debt. People see the federal government, state government and local municipalities spend money frivolously all over the country. Are the schools teaching kids it's wrong? No. Teachers all across the country are on the picket lines looking for their piece of the taxpayer pie. All these rising pensions that public workers receive are going to bankrupt a lot of states as they have done to California. Thirteen percect of the money people make in California is now going to state taxes to bail them out of their mess. And don't tell me it's all Arnold's fault. California was in a world of trouble long before he became governor. The baby boomers are retiring. That's a huge chunk of the workforce and tax base. Who is going to cover these pensions. I do not want to work until I'm dead to pay someone elses pension, but it appears that's what I will be doing. By the time I'm eligible for SS, the pitance I recieve probably won't buy me a cup of coffee. Oh and if your kids are well adjusted, I would say it says more about you as a parent than it says about the public school system.

  • 4/28 11:44pm   Hello - I am trying to help a friend to reach her fundraising goal for a 1/2 marathon she's running for Team Challenge Crohn's and Colitis. (teamchallenge@ccfa.org) The race is in Chicago on June 8th. I came up with the idea of holding a multi family yard sale in the Family Florist shop's parking lot.
To raise funds, I would offer people a space with a table provided for a $20.00 donation. Or - bring your own table - $15.00 donation. That money would got toward Lisa's fundraising. Any money made from selling your yard sale treasures would, of course, be yours. I will get the word out, provide tables and the location. The florist is on rt. 115 so, it has good traffic flow. I was thinking May 18th for the date. 8 am to 3 pm.
Please email me: Macca1fan@aol.com with any questions or if you'd like to reserve a spot. Consider it a two-fer: Helping out a charity AND clearing out some clutter!

  • 4/22 6:49pm   Good Day Norfolk. Many residents who receive their cellular telephone service through Verizon have undoubtedly been experiencing cellular interruption since March 25th within geographic center of the town. Staff at both the Fire and Police Departments have been working tirelessly with many Verizon representatives in an effort to re-establish uninterrupted cellular service.
During our conversations with Verizon we have clearly identified this as a public safety matter whereby anyone needing emergency assistance attempting to dial 911 on their cellular telephone may not be connected as the call will not transmit.
Through the assistance of the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) we have been successful having an engineers group assigned to Norfolk for resolution of this problem. This group of technical experts were in Norfolk on April 17th and seemingly the problem appeared to have been corrected.
Unfortunately on Sunday, April 21st the cellular service for many Verizon customers again was interrupted. We immediately contacted the engineers who had service restored by early evening.
Today, April 22nd, the engineering group is returning to Norfolk in an effort to diagnose the problem and make corrections to ensure uninterrupted service.
If anyone would like further information, please do not hestitate contacting me via email bushnell@virtualnorfolk.org or at the station 508-528-3207.
We would like to publicly thank MEMA and Verizon for their assistance.

  • 4/22 6:42pm   Whoa! Let's back up. First off, I've never been a developer. BB complains that developers will turn your neighborhood into a fleet of dusty, muddy earthmoving juggernauts (nice rhetoric). As a 24-year resident who bought a house built by a developer, I might view development as something which should be controlled by the town and not by someone who appears to have only one agenda. I assure you that the fleet may have been here once, but it hasn't been here for a long while. Only nice families/taxpayers venture onto our streets. We contribute to the town and enjoy its blessings. Change happens. Development will happen. The fact that you already have a house and don't want anyone new moving in seems somewhat elitist. It's not easy to be a developer working in Norfolk anymore. Let's not just throw mud at them. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, if a farm may be up for sale because the owner wishes to sell it, let's not tell them it cannot be sold to a developer who will meet the town's requirements for development.

  • 4/22 6:36pm   The long winter had come to an end! The inclement weather and make up days have altered our current sixth grade into seventh grade DARE to Dream Summer Day Program which was originally scheduled for June 24-28 2013. There are communities in our area that will still be attending school up until Tuesday June 25. The current winter has forced us to revise our sixth grade week. We will start our program on Wednesday, June 26 (weekend off) to (Tuesday) July 2. We have dealt with the split situation in previous years with very much success. It is understandable that we are not able to meet everyone's needs and we thank you for your patience. Please visit us at www.daretodreamsummer.com and check out our new video for 2013! You will also find our 2013 downloadable registration form at the website. Our registration forms will be coming out through the schools on the week of April 22. Listed below are our final dates for the summer of 2013. We once again look forward to seeing you all for a fun-filled summer!
    Current grade 6 entering grade 7 June 26, 27, 28, July 1, 2 (Wednesday - Tuesday)
    Current grades 7 and 8 July 8-12 (Monday-Friday)
    Current grade 4 entering grade 5 August 5-9 (Monday-Friday)
    Current grade 5 entering grade 6 August 12-16 (Monday-Friday)
    Thanks kindly,

  • 4/22 11:23am   JH, Why on earth do you want to report King Philip to the state? Most high schools do the exact same thing that KP is doing. Give PE credit for sports, dance or other physical related activities. So what seems to be the problem? Why is this a bad thing? Perhaps you should let the school administration/school committee run the school, which will then free up time for you do to whatever you do best!

  • 4/22 11:17am   BB, Your flippant remark about Coors Light at the end of your rant just goes to show how immature you are when someone has an opposing opinion. What does progress have to do with teaching someone to walk on the right side of the street, not to overspend their budget or know what continent we're on? And yes, I love the sounds of trucks beeping and hammers hammering. It means I am working and not out holding a sign protesting for some "nut job's" agenda.
    Oh, have a nice day.

  • 4/19 6:30pm   In response to the post regarding physical education requirements at King Philip please note that 7.5 credits of ``Physical Education and Wellness'' (including 2.5 credits of health ) are required for graduation. This has not changed. As part of the School Committee's review of the 2013-2014 Program of Studies for each school (KPHS & KPMS) the School Committee did approve the recommendation of Mrs. Oliveira, the High School Principal, to permit students to use their participation in an outside/extracurricular activity to satisfy the 10th+ grade physical education requirement. Students in 9th grade will continue to take Physical Education as part of their required schedule. The activity must have a strong educational component, the student must actively participate in the activity for a specific minimum number of hours (currently 80 hours) and the activity must be pre-approved by the principal. Although 2.5 credits of the physical education requirement would be *waived* the student does not receive High School credit for the activity. In order to graduate the student will still need to complete 115 credits. This change will allow students to take an additional elective *in any academic discipline* and may lend to more flexibility in scheduling and course offerings.
Mrs. Oliveiria clearly indicated to the School Committtee that she did not anticipate this change would have any impact on staffing.
We are expecting to see the development of several new physical education courses for the 2014-2015 school year that would be available to students throughout their time at KP. The intention is that these new courses would be available either to satisfy the physical education requirement or as an additional elective. These new courses will also allow juniors who had no possibility of participating in Physical Education to do so if they choose.
The King Philip Regional School District highly values physical education and is committed to providing the community's students with a well rounded educational experience throughout their secondary school careers.
If anyone has additional questions or comments please do not hesitate to contact Mrs. Olivieria, the High School Principal (oliveiral@kingphilip.org). Please also feel free to contact me on this or any other issue; my email is pefrancomano@gmail.com. Thank you for your interest and commitment to the King Philip Community.
Patrick Francomano, Chair, King Philip School Committee

  • 4/19 6:28pm   Let's nip any Override ideas in the bud right now! There is no way we can afford another tax override, another increase in property taxes will destroy our property values. Our property taxes are ridiculous as it is. We all need to send a STRONG and CLEAR message to the elected officials that a tax override is not an option.
We have a Federal government taxing us to death, a State government taxing us to death and a Town government trying to get in on the act. Tighten the spending belt, tough times require tough decisions! Let's go folks, start sending emails and making phone calls to our friends and neighbors. Stop this addiction to spending.

  • 4/19 5:44pm   DT. The reason for lack of common sense is in fact, the complete opposite of your hypothesis. It is the growth of the right wing agenda with pro business propaganda, the deregulation of environmental controls as good for "growth", collusion between business and government, and the capitulation of ordinary citizens to the combination of all these factors.
The fact that you would apparently prefer developers turning your neighborhood into a fleet of dusty, muddy, earth moving juggernauts, endless truck beeping instead of spring peepers, blasting and hammering noise. And the soulless flattening of the woods into Brady Bunch developments speaks to how successful that strategy has been. Enjoy the noise (and the Coors Light).

My husband and I have been on the phone with them for days this past week. They have been pretty good about realizing there is a problem but getting it fixed is one thing. It's definitely something in the area of downtown Norfolk as when we leave the area our cell phones work fine. Not sure if another company has better service so we aren't switching as we have been happy with Verizon normally!

  • 4/17 9:53pm   Calling all preschools, daycares, afterschool and summer programs. I have lots of classroom/camp supplies from my teaching days that I need to get rid of this spring. There are lots of appropriate magazines for cutting (recent copies of Parents, for example) and a boxes of things like colored paper, sticky paper, envelopes, letter tracers, and notebook binders. There are things for crafts too like little sewing kits, little mirrors, smiley face buttons, sea shells... you know... the kind of stuff you save because you know someday it will become art. I also have some things from when I taught nature classes Call me (508 520-9791) or email the box number box434@norfolknet.com. It will kill me to throw all this stuff in the recycle. Thanks

  • 4/17 9:48pm   Attention Verizon wireless customers. Verizon service has been awful in the center of town out about a mile in all directions. I have spoken with many people in town as well as the DPW and they all seem to think there is a problem. Verizon says no and we all need to constantly call and complain to make them step up and help us out. We all pay our bills for spotty service and we all need to let them know.

  • 4/17 9:46pm   You are 110% right, DT. They haven't taught civics, for example, in the Boston Public Schools for at least 10 years and I don't think geography was ever taught as far back as the early 70s. And by the way, the national standards DC is pushing are easier than what Massachusetts, as a whole, is doing now. That is, if you can believe what the D of Ed says. Oh, well... people are so much easier to deal with when they don't have too many pesky facts running around in their noggins.

  • 4/17 9:44pm   I also recommend Liam Houlihan - he painted our house last year and did an exceptional job - way above what anyone else had ever done. Not to mention, you couldn't find a more pleasant person to have at your home - no-one else will ever paint our house but Liam and his crew!

  • 4/17 9:43pm   I have heard from several friends in town and some that were present at a school committee meeting on Monday March 18th that the school committee voted in favor of removing P.E. from the high school junior and senior curriculum to allow students to take additional band classes. They were suggesting in order to meet the state's requirements for P.E. hours that they would give the students credit for "marching" in the band or if they have a gym membership! It has been well known that KP High is a well known marching band school with national recognition. But to remove Physical Education (I believe this was for Juniors and Seniors only). This should not be an option and needs to be reported to the State Dept of Physical Education. Nothing but extreme disappointment in the KP school system.
This meeting held on March 18th was well under attended, maybe 10 people. My understanding is that no one knew this was going down or there would of been a lot more in attendance. This will also effect the Physical Education teacher's jobs.
Please call anyone you know who can help put a stop to this.

  • 4/17 9:36pm   DT: Really? I am not a teacher, nor a union member, but my children have attended public schools. They have done quite well, mainly due to their teachers and our efforts at home. It may be time for you to step away from the keyboard and rethink such a broad sweeping statement. Teachers are so very important to our country and it's ongoing success. Your broad generalizations are not only misinformed, but insulting.

  • 4/14 6:18pm   BB, The reason no one has any common sense anymore, is because the public schools are too busy teaching left wing blather. All public school teachers are members of a union. All unions have an agenda. Thats why they are formed in the first place. Kids are not getting an education about factual history, geography, economics, or just plain common sense anymore. It's all about the liberal agenda and how to further that agenda. Don't believe it? Just get your kids and some of their friends together and give them an easy little quiz about the subjects I've mentioned. It will open your eyes. Also take a look at the courses offered at public high schools and colleges. The public money being spent on our schools is not for a common sense education anymore.

  • 4/14 1:27pm   RM, I agree with you. I love these people who want to tell people other people what to do with their land. It is not anyone's business if they sell the land to a developer and move. You are right, if you do not want the land to be developed, then buy it. Otherwise, leave people alone and let them do what they want-it's their land.

  • 4/14 1:26pm   4th Annual Norfolk Community Day Youth Art Show - Promoting Our Community through the Arts.
For the 4th year the Norfolk Lions are sponsoring a youth art show open to all Norfolk residents in grades 1 through 6. The art work submitted should represent a 'Scene around Norfolk'. All entries will be displayed at Community Day on June 8, 2013 at the Holmes Complex, 22 Myrtle St., Norfolk. In addition, all art work will become a part of a slide show that will be broadcast on Norfolk Cable TV.
This show is free to all participants, with one entry per person. All artwork must be drawn or painted on paper no larger than 11-inches by 17-inches, using pencils, pens, crayons, paint, markers and fabric. Each entry must include an entry form taped to the backside of the art. Entry forms have already been given to children in the Norfolk public schools and additional forms can be found in each class room. There are also forms available in the main lobby of the Norfolk Public Library.
Entries will be judged by a panel appointed by the Norfolk Lions in three age groups: grades 1 and 2, grades 3 and 4, and grades 5 and 6. Winners will be selected based on artistic creativity, neatness and originality. All entries will receive an award and winners in each age group will be awarded 1st, 2nd and 3rd place and honorable mention ribbons. But that's not all - the 1st place winners in each age group and one Grand Prize winner will also each receive gift certificates! And these winning entries will be displayed at the Norfolk Library, for all to see, for two weeks after Community Day.
The contest entry deadline is 5 p.m. on Friday, May 24. Entries can be placed in the collection boxes at the Freeman Kennedy or HOD schools, or mailed or dropped off in person to:

  • 4/10 9:45pm   BB, I strongly support your sentiments of 4/9 @ 9:54 p.m. The developers do indeed lurk and they never stop pressing. Not only that, many of us believed then and still believe now that the actual motivation by some folks behind the recent and successful local effort to vote down or reduce funding of our Community Preservation Committee (including posts on this very site) had little or nothing to do with budget concerns, austerity, or removing a negligible surcharge; but, in fact, was an attempt to further restrict the ability of the CPC to purchase precious open spaces (like Jane & Paul's Farm) and provide owners with a great option that benefits absolutely everyone, that is, with the exception of yet another millionaire developer carrying out the continuing disappearance of the town's open spaces and, as you put it so well, "the wanton destruction of the woodlands."
And I agree wholeheartedly with your call to the citizens of Norfolk to fight unwanted and excessive development. We should be active and watchful. Lack of involvement and apathy are loyal friends of the developer, as are folks sitting on Town Boards and Committees with conflicts of interest (I am not saying that is presently the case in Norfolk, but residents should always be on the lookout, especially at election time).
I would also suggest greater participation in the meetings of the Community Preservation Committee. They meet at Town Hall the third Wednesday of every month at 7:30 p. m.. Perhaps a member of the CPC, providing it does not violate a confidence, could visit this forum and provide us with some good news regarding the future status of the Jane & Paul property. Anyone?

  • 4/2 11:43pm   Hope this is just a temporary situation (and not an April Fools' prank either!), but I called Jane and Paul's Farm yesterday to see when they would be open for the season, and the woman who answered (sounded like Jane) said they were retiring!? Anyone have any information about what is happening on Fruit Street?? I hope there is a succession plan in place to keep this community gem operating. Thanks,

  • 3/31 10:16pm   Last summer, our family hosted a young girl from the Bronx for a week of summer vacation. She hadn't ever been outside New York City and got to experience many things for the first time that we take for granted, like swimming in a pool, playing in a grassy park, or even just riding in a car.
Every year, The Fresh Air Fund gives provides a week or two of summer vacation for thousands of kids, with many returning year after year to the same host family. We bring kids from the 5 boroughs of New York City to soak up the fresh air and beauty of the country while enjoying the simple pleasures of riding a bike, playing in the backyard or swimming in a pool or lake. Unfortunately, last year 200 kids were disappointed because we couldn't find enough hosts. *We are, more than ever, determined to give each and every child the opportunity this year.
Anyone who loves kids can host a child. If you have kids, wouldn't it be great for them to have a new brother or sister for a week? And if you're an empty nester, you will have more fun than you can imagine with an 8-12 year-old child staying with you for a week.
Please consider hosting a child from New York this summer, or pass this message along to anyone you think might want this amazing experience. It will change your life, as it has ours. For more information, see the Fresh Air Fund website at www.freshair.org. You can also contact Ian Proffer (ian.proffer@gmail.com) in Norfolk.

  • 3/31 9:40pm   Could I get a few opinions as to the traffic volume at the old access to the Freeman-Kennedy school on Boardman St. I'd like to provide signage for an event and am wondering if it makes sense to provide signage at both the new access road next to the Grange as well as the old access on Boardman. My signage is limited, so if the Boardman St. gets very little traffic these days, I would probably place the sign somewhere else. Thanks for any info you could share!

  • 3/30 12:25am   Hi, I am a homeowner looking to get some "re-use" out of rocks, stone borders, partial stonewalls that no one wants in their yard anymore. Again, I am a homeowner looking to do projects around my yard. Free is the best price if you have rocks you don't need anymore. I'd be glad to get some re-use out of them. You can reach me at bp4402@hotmail.com and put rocks in the subject line. Thanks for reading.

  • 3/30 12:23am   It is looking like the long winter is coming to an end! We once again look forward to seeing you all this summer! Listed below are final dates for the DARE to Dream Summer Day Program 2013.
    Current grade 6 entering grade 7 June 26, 27, 28, July 1, 2 (Wednesday - Tuesday)
    Current grades 7 and 8 July 8-12 (Monday-Friday)
    Current grade 4 entering grade 5 August 5-9 (Monday-Friday)
Current grade 5 entering grade 6 August 12-16
    Thanks kindly,
    - Steve Plympton, DARE to Dream Summer Day Program

  • 3/30 12:15am   Dear Norfolk Net:
We are two eighth grade Girl Scouts working on our Silver Award. We are completing the History Wall at the Freeman-Kennedy School with the history of Norfolk schools. We are researching and writing biographies for Alvin J Freeman, Adam Kennedy and a number of other individuals with connections to the Norfolk Schools. We would like to create plaques with a photo image and the biographical information on them to be hung at the Freeman-Kennedy School.
We have been researching plaques online but would like to work with a local company if possible. We have been fundraising and have also received two grants from NCL and the Norfolk Cultural Council to help fund this project. Can anyone recommend a local company to assist us? Please contact us at norfolkhistorywall@gmail.com or 508-380-1993 (Tara S.).
Thanks! Eleanor S. and Katie M., Norfolk Girl Scout Troop 3616
