To JB - We have been thrilled with Distinctive Landscaping out of
Attleboro. The guys are neat and punctual and do what we think is a
fabulous job and have for the past 3 years. Jason is the owner and can
be reached at
jason@redtrucks.net.
They thatched the front lawn (with a
bladed machine vs. a tined machine--they have both) which really opened
it up for overseeding. They also had to bring in quite a bit of loam in
that area. At some point when we are able to have it done, we will have
Jason's company renovate further. They have done some major edging, some
shrub work and some maintenance work as well for us. The loam is the
best I have ever had put down in our yard, with a fair amount of compost
in it.

Try asking a teacher about these new standards. Believe me, concern

least of your worries.

Need some help with the kids?
Hi! My Im Brie S. and I
absolutely love looking after kids I am thirteen years old, I live
at 115 Union Street, and I have one little brother. I enjoy baking,
reading, and spending time with my friends. I have two dogs and
two hamsters. As you can see, I love animals. I enjoy playing
soccer, lacrosse, and dancing. I have also been a Girl Scout for
7 years. I have taken the 4-H babysitting course. Last month, I
went to a Girl Scout course for taking care of younger children.
Another great experience I had was completing the CPR course. I
have a lot of babysitting experience. During the summer, I run a
camp for kids with my best friends. A couple weeks ago, I took a
first aid class with a Stoughton EMT. Babysitting my brother on
week nights really benefits my knowledge of taking care of kids.
Babysitting has always been something that I love doing. I am
always a phone call or email away 508-944-3634

AB-G, I have been organizing the ladies' night out fundraiser, Happy Feat,
for the past three years. Every year we choose a different charity to be the
recipient of our proceeds. This year's event will benefit Fisher House
Boston. After this year's tickets were printed I emailed prior year's
attendees to let them know tickets were available for sale. To my surprise
and delight, all 120 tickets were reserved within 24 hours! I had placed a
notice in the Rec. Dept brochure back in January, due to printing lead time.
Although it appears that we have many tickets left to sell, the truth is,
now that the dust has settled and everyone has finalized their plans, we
have only five tickets left. If you are interested in purchasing one of
these five tickets, or would just like me to add your name to my mailing
list for future years, or if you would like to make an outright donation to
the Fisher House Boston, a 501c3 charity, please stop by the library and see
me. I will be at the Norfolk Public Library on Tuesday April 2 5:30-7:30p.m.
and again on Saturday April 6 10:00a.m.-12:00p.m. By the way, mark your
calendars for next year. The Happy Feat Fundraiser will be held at a bigger
venue, Lake Pearl Luciano's on Friday, April 25, 2014. Contact me at

Hello everyone.
I am selling for a friend here in Norfolk, a complete service for 6 with
extra items, set of Myott British China in the pattern titled
``The Hunters''. This is the ``red'' color.
All pieces are in beautiful condition and include some lesser seen extra
pieces. Age of the set, brought over from Holland is 50-60 years
approximately. It's a lovely set. The pieces include:
6 Dinner plates, 6 soup plates, 6 bread plates, 6 cups and saucers, 1
sugar with lid and 1 creamer, 2 large serving bowls, 1 large cold cut
plate, 1 large platter, 1 gravy boat, a beautiful teapot and I may have
missed a piece or 2.
The set is in virtually perfect condition and has had very limited use.
My friends are downsizing a bit and would like to find a new home for
this very nice set. It has spent its life in a NON-Smoking home. If this
set belongs in your home, please call Alan at 508-528-1976 and I will
pick up the set and be glad to show you all the pieces. Asking price is
$275 or best reasonable offer. I have attached 2 photos (I believe that
is allowed here on Norfolk Net.) The blue dishes in the photo are not
included with the set and the photo shows just a sample of the many
pieces that this set includes. Thanks so much for your interest. The
hutch...a spectacular piece made in Belgium before World War 2 and other
pieces ...may be for sale at a later date. Thanks so much for looking
and THANK YOU Norfolk Net.

It's hard to believe with all this snow that tomorrow is the start of
registration for Norfolk Recreation's Spring and Summer Programs, but
[March 20] is the day! Registration starts at 10am on-line, in the office or
by mail. Credit cards are only accepted on line.
We hope you like our program line-up this year. Programs can be viewed on
line at
www.virtualnorfolk.org/rec
and in our brochure. The brochure was
mailed this past Friday to all postal residences in Norfolk... it is very
bright pink.
Tomorrow is also the day we will be selling Red Sox tickets (only 26 per
game) to 2 great games with great seats. We will be selling tickets (check
or cash only) from 6-7:15pm in our office:
GAME 1:
Red Sox vs. Toronto Friday, May 10. Seats are in the Coca-Cola Pavilion
(Left Field Pavilion 18) Tickets are $77 each. One of the best kept secrets
at Fenway is the Coca Cola Corner. This pavilion level area provides one of
best views from anywhere in the park plus you will ind a special concession
area unlike anywhere else in the park with picnic tables.
In the brochure, it was incorrectly stated these tickets covered $15 of
food/drink. I apologize for the error.
GAME 2:
Red Sox vs. Los Angeles Angels Saturday, June 8.
Seats are in the Right Field Roof Box 39. A great view, nice area for
drinks and food. Personally, one of my favorite locations. Tickets are $54
each.

I hope that Dan Winslow's posts stay on the main page. That is where I feel
they belong to ensure that people do not have to go digging into the
Politics page to read them. This is an important election and I am
interested in information from any/all candidates. Wm has assured everyone
that opponents share the same right to post on the main page, so I don't
understand the issue (TEM).
- CS
3/17 12:57pm
RM, we are in agreement. The Webmaster has clarified his position
regarding the politics page of the NorfolkNet
(see post of 3/12@9:46 pm)
and I am satisfied with that explanation. As he has done in the past, I
am also confident he will differentiate public announcements of elected
officials on issues of legitimate concern to NorfolkNet readers as
opposed to campaign blather when a politician or candidate is running
for office or re-election and is simply beating his own drums.
- TEM
3/17 12:56pm
WA you mentioned in your first post you thought Wm. was fair as far as
posting both sides and now you're saying he's not? Do you have a
candidate in mind that you would like to see posting here? First you
complain about Dan Winslow's posts and how they should be on the politics
page. Then you say it has nothing to do with your political beliefs but,
we should be able to here the other side? I believe you are leaning.
Look out to the left! LOL! Just hit the slide bar.

On Saturday February 16, 2013, Norfolk Lions held their 6th Annual Chili
Fest at St. Jude's Church. This annual event has become a staple in

OK, it's not unanimous, TEM. I don't mind seeing notices and occasional

As I recall, he has always posted both sides of the issue or the

Just a quick response to those who feel party politics drive my
opinion. I think it is terrific that Wm allows political discussions
on this bulletin board. I have seen many internet discussion go south
very quickly over politics and religion and I think Wm has instituted
a workable solution - a politics section. I think Dan Winslow is a
good man. Have known him for about 15 years. But this is not an issue
of history, personal feelings, or a long time town resident. IMO this
is an issue of equal treatment. I have a feeling some folks would feel
differently if Dan were of a different political leaning than they
were. Wouldn't you all agree it would be best to treat all political
posts equally ? Thanks

Hi There Girls & Boys!
I'm the new Book Bear here at the Norfolk Library. The librarians said
I could get my very own library card ...but there's a little problem. They
can't give me a Li-beary (get it?? libeary) card if I don't have a name. So
I need your help!
I'm looking for a great name and I need some ideas from you. I'm
holding a contest to find the best library bear name ever. Just please
don't name me Dewey! There's a book about some library cat named Dewey
& I
don't want to be named after a cat!! Also, a long time ago the library had
a fish named Dewey and I certainly don't want to be named after an old fish!
Drop by the library, fill out a form, put it in the box and the
librarians will help me pick my name at the end of April. Limit -- 1 entry per
child.Contest open to all Norfolk children up to age 12. Deadline for
submission is April 22nd.
Sincerely yours, The Library Book Bear

To our beloved Wm: Professional politicians belong on the "Politics"
page. No exceptions, please. If and when you decide to start making
exceptions, then toss or delete the "Politics" page.
- TEM
[So the Politics page came about because I needed a place where the
amateur politicians could beat on each other without frightening away
everyone else. The professionals have sent in occasional announcements,
and during times of low political sensitivity that's fine on the main
page, no-one minds. The real issue at hand is the number of announcements,
and there I'm the one to blame -- I have not been keeping close track
of either the merit or the frequency of the press releases. I've been
reading them more carefully since the topic was raised - Wm.]

Agree with FB's post on 3/2, went to the Healthy Pet Supply Store uptown
and the service was great. Their pricing is consistent with the big pet
stores on the large dog food bags, and if you don't have what they want,
they will certainly order it for you. Since I have started to buy the
larger bags there, they now stock the brand I buy for my dogs and it is
simple to stop in and pick it up.

Many options available to fit your family and schedule.
1) Ten high school
aged French students are coming to our area July 8-28, 2013. In addition to
touring several universities, we have planned several fun group activities
that your family can choose to participate or not. On non-group days, the

throughout the summer from many countries for varying lengths of stays.
These independent participants may also travel with you depending upon your
summer plans.

As much as I agree that a local political candidate should use a
local forum such as Norfolknet to promote his candidacy, and I
understand that other candidates who are not residents of Norfolk
would be granted similar access and opportunity, I do wonder if it

I see lately wouldn't be more appropriately placed in the Politics

often as a political soapbox.

I wanted everyone to know that my dog was attacked by a dog at the
Wrentham Dog Park near the development center on Feb 25 mid afternoon.
The only information I have on the dog that attacked Peanut is that he
was a rescued from a Georgia kill shelter about a month ago. The dog is
called Lem or Len? It has the features of a pit-bull and is white with
brown and tan markings. The dog is stocky all muscle with red around
it's eyes. Thank God I had a sweater on Peanut because it saved his
life.
The owner is new to the area but works as a nurse in Boston. He name is
Jill and I believe her husband's name is Richie and they moved to
[...] in Wrentham in a new home built on the vacant lots? I
don't know her and was so shaken up that I ran for my dogs life and
mine. I need to find her to get her dog's rabies shot info. Otherwise
it will be my dog punished for 45 days in quarantine. I would be so
grateful for any help anyone can give me. I am not mad at her. She and
I walked the park three times before he attacked my dog. Jill seemed
like a lovely person and I just need to get info. Thank you for any
help you can give me. Please call Donna at 508-921-9917.

NORFOLK, MA - United States Senate candidate Dan Winslow wants
Massachusetts voters to be fully informed when they head to the
polls on April 30th, and has issued an invitation to his opponents
to participate in a series of nine debates. One debate would take
place in each of Massachusetts's congressional districts, following
the style of the historic Lincoln Douglas debates. Voters will have
the opportunity to weigh in on the location and topic of these
debates by casting their vote prior to March 15, 2013 on
ninedebates.com.
``I propose a new direction for these debates by inviting voters
to register their opinion before the candidates take the stage ~
to cast their vote and tell us what they want to hear, and where
they want us to go,'' said Winslow. ``It's time to break away from
the tone deafness of our current Congress and listen to what the
people have to say. Politicians are here to serve the people, and
by engaging the electorate from the very start of this debate
process, I plan to do just that.''
Winslow, a former judge and current State Representative, issued
the challenge to Gabriel Gomez and Michael Sullivan shortly after
all three confirmed they had submitted the necessary signatures to
make the ballot. The debates would take place in each of the state's
nine Congressional districts, and include all three candidates.
Voters will be able to register their vote on location and debate
subject matter by visiting
www.ninedebates.com.
``We have less than sixty days until primary election day, and the
electorate deserves to know where the candidates stand on the issues
that are most important to our Commonwealth and the entire country,''
Winslow said. ``I look forward to engaging my opponents and discussing
the new ideas I have to break the gridlock in Washington DC and
change the face of politics here in Massachusetts.''

In response to a posting that appeared recently, I would like to explain
the methods of collections in the Treasurer/Collectors office.
When bills are issued a payment return envelope is provided with a Medford
MA address, the location of our bank lockbox. The bank automatically
deposits those payments directly into our account allowing the taxpayer's
bills to be credited.
Taxpayers do have other options for payments.
- Mail payments directly to the Treasurer/Collector's office at Town
Hall
(One Liberty Lane, Norfolk, MA 02056).
- Bring payments to the Treasurer/Collector's office located at Town Hall
- Use the online billing system -
www.virtualnorfolk.org
You have two (2) options for paying your bill; either by electronic check
or by credit card.
- Electronic Check:
You will need one of your checks with you when you pay your bill online in
order to get your account number and the bank's routing number from it.
You will be shown where this information is on your check.
Please note: Beginning January 1, 2013 there will be a $0.25 processing
fee assessed by the bank for all electronic check payments.
- Credit Card:
We accept MasterCard, Visa and Discover for credit card payments.
PLEASE NOTE: Visa is accepted for Real Estate, Personal Property and
Excise payments only.
There will be a processing fee for each online credit card payment. The
credit card service provider charges the fee to your credit card.
When paying by credit card, the fee amount will appear in a separate box
and will be totaled with the amount of the tax.
PLEASE NOTE the processing fees set, by the bank & credit card companies,
are per bill.
- Use the secured Drop Box located at the rear entrance of Town Hall

Norfolk Reads Together - 2013 - at the Norfolk Public Library
Norfolk Reads Together is a community-wide reading program for EVERYONE!
The trustees and staff of the NPL have selected the Pulitzer prize-winning
book "March" by Geraldine Brooks as our title for 2013. We're sure you'll
find this critically acclaimed bestseller to be compelling reading. Here's
what the critics say about March.
"As the North reels under a series of unexpected defeats during the
dark first year of the Civil War, one man leaves behind his family to aid
the Union cause. His experiences will utterly change his marriage and
challenge his most ardently held beliefs. From Louisa May Alcott's beloved
classic, Little Women, Geraldine Brooks has taken the character of the
absent father, Mr. March, who has gone off to war, leaving his wife and
daughters to make do in mean times. From vibrant New England to the
sensuous antebellum South, "March" adds adult resonance to Alcott's
optimistic children's novel. A lushly written, wholly original tale steeped
in the details of another time".
Along with reading the book, the library has developed a series of related
programs to enhance the reader's experience.
March 7th @ 7:00 PM Screening: The Woman Behind Little Women:
Filmed on location at many places actually frequented by the real
persons portrayed and featuring a script written from primary sources, this
documentary tells the life story of American author Louisa May Alcott,
chronicling her efforts to rescue her family from poverty and find wealth,
fame, and happiness for herself. Includes animations and commentary from
Alcott scholars, novelist Geraldine Brooks, and the "literary sleuths" who
uncovered Alcott's lost thrillers.
March 13th @ 7:00 Gary Hylander Presents "March: History Fact or Fiction?"
Join Professor Gary Hylander as he discusses the Civil War and probes into
the literary license taken by novelist Geraldine Brooks in order to create
the haunting pictures of the war ravaged South, Brooks affecting,
beautifully written novel drives home the intimate horrors and ironies of
the Civil War and the difficulty of living honestly with the knowledge of
human suffering. Could this have been achieved by writing a non-fiction
book or does it take a work of historical fiction to attain the intimate
horrors and ironies of the Civil War and the difficulty of living honestly
with the knowledge of human suffering?

To all you people driving around with snowbanks on your cars and
SUV's. Do you ever consider what happens to that big hunk of ice when
it goes sailing off your roof at 60mph? Have you ever considered what
happens when it hits the windshield of the car behind you?
When you don't clear your side windows, rear windows and tail lights
off, have you ever considered how much danger you are putting you and
your passengers LIVES in!

(which,
frankly, I find humorous) but she is also very loving. She `takes
charge' of

gone.) She won't scratch you or the furniture. Please contact me at

have me send you a photo. Thanks, I really want to find her a home ...

Feb 25 NORFOLK, MA -- United States Senate candidate Dan Winslow
will hold a ``THANK YOU'' event in Boston on Monday, February 25
to announce that his campaign has collected nearly 25,000 signatures,
far more than the 10,000 needed to qualify for the ballot in the
special U.S. Senate election.
``I am honored and encouraged that nearly 25,000 people from the
Commonwealth of Massachusetts have helped me take the first step
in my campaign for the United States Senate," Winslow said. ``I
want to thank every volunteer and my dynamic signature drive team
for their effort, hard work and dedication -- far surpassing not
only the required 10,000 signatures but my expectations. Without
them none of this could have happened. I am heartened by their
support."
The ``THANK YOU'' event will take place at Anthony's Pier 4 Restaurant,
140 Northern Avenue, in Boston at 6:00pm on Monday February 25.

While writing my check to pay my town motor vehicle tax, I noticed the
address to which the check is mailed goes to a P.O. box in Medford.
Does anyone else find that odd, especially given we've got a post office
almost directly across the street from town hall? That would mean
someone needs to make a trip to the Medford PO to pick up the mail.
Seems like a waste of time and gasoline to me. Maybe there's more to
this story? Just throwin' it out there.

When going to pay the excise tax on our vehicles, I was surprised to
see we are now are being charged a small ADDITIONAL fee for the
privilege of paying our town taxes when using the online electronic
transfer method. One would think it would cost the town LESS to
collect money through electronic transfers than for someone to
manually process checks or cash paid at the tax collector's window in
the town hall. The UniPay site now (as of Jan 1, 2013) does say on
the final page of the "cart" (after all info is given) that, "ACH
payments will be assessed a $.25 processing fee per transaction.", but
even that is misleading. I wanted to pay for four vehicles at once,
but was NOT charged $.25 for that single transaction, but $1.00 for
what they deemed was four transactions. I cancelled. I will walk to
the town hall and give them four separate checks. I do not like being
charged for the privilege of paying my bills on time. It goes against
my Yankee ethics.

Soros-backed PAC seeking dirt on GOP candidates
DTI
A George Soros-backed liberal group specializing in gathering damaging
information on Republicans is already nosing around for dirt on the Bay
State's GOP candidates for U.S. Senate -- going so far as to dig up
obscure, decades-old town documents.
Jeff Palumbo, the chairman of the Norfolk Planning Board, told the
Herald yesterday that a representative of American Bridge 21st Century --
a left-wing super PAC devoted to so-called opposition research against
conservative pols -- called his board only hours after state Rep. Dan
Winslow (R-Norfolk) started an exploratory committee last week.
``It didn't take them long,'' said Palumbo.
The group requested all minutes of planning board meetings during
Winslow's 1988-1994 tenure -- nearly 2,000 pages of records.
Chris Harris, a spokesman from the American Bridge 21st Century,
confirmed that the group requested the material. The nationally known
Democratic political action committee was started in 2010 by David
Brock. Its largest donor is George Soros, a Hungarian-American business
magnate who has become a huge supporter of liberal causes.
Palumbo, a registered Republican, said the group's request had the look
of a fishing expedition. ``It strikes me as a witch hunt to dig up
information,'' he said. ``It's disconcerting.''
U.S. Rep. Stephen Lynch quickly condemned the group's attempt to dig up
dirt on GOP rivals.
``I would ask outside groups not to take part in this campaign, either by
advertising or trying to smear candidates of either party,'' the South
Boston Democrat said in a statement after hearing about the information
request. ``Please allow the people of Massachusetts to decide who their
next senator will be. And let that decision be based on each candidate's
perspectives and the strengths that they would bring to the U.S. Senate.''
Lynch and U.S. Rep. Edward J. Markey have sought to keep third-party
PACs out of the race. Markey even challenged his rivals to sign
the ``people's pledge,'' similar to an agreement struck by former U.S.
Sen. Scott Brown and Democrat Elizabeth Warren during their Senate race.
If a negative ad from an outside political action committee did show up,
the candidate would have to make a campaign contribution to charity.
The Markey campaign did not respond to requests for comment. But the
Malden Democrat wrote in January, ``This election should be a forum for
the voices of everyday voters, not attacks from Karl Rove and other
outside special interests.''

MG, what is dishonest about D&S's approach to you service call? They told
you 2hrs and charged you 2hrs. Here is what you said:
I can tell you to stay away from D&S Appliance repair in Franklin, told
me
a job would take a couple hours, they had it done in a 1/2 hour and
charged
me the 2 hours. Not very honest in my opinion.
That doesn't sound much different than the automotive industry with
their
Flat Rate service charge. They will charge 4hrs for a job and the
mechanic
does it in 2hrs and the customer gets hit with a bill for the 4hrs?
I understand this approach for both service businesses. The business
makes
money in both cases. If D&S had charged you for 1/2 hour, they would not
be in
business for long.
I don't think it's fair that you throw D&S under the bus when they
appear to
have told you up front what they would charge you.
- PD
2/18 11:51pm
PD, first of all you don't know me or my knowledge! I happen to have over
30 years experience in the service industry as a FLAT RATE auto mechanic and
fleet mechanic servicing vehicles. I also manage a service oriented fleet of
900 vehicles, whose cargo is children, folks with disabilities and folks
needing a ride.
I know how the flat rate system works and most people bringing their car
into a dealership understand the system. Flat rate auto mechanics do not get
paid time and a half if they work over 40 hours, so they make up the
difference by being talented and quick to complete tasks when repairing a
vehicle.
My point is be honest, if you say a repair is going to cost X amount of
dollars don't follow it up with a bogus number of hours to justify the
price. Give me a price and have confidence in your ability to complete the
job at the price you gave. That is where my opinion and negative experience
about the business I posted about came from. Don't assume you can pull the
wool over the customers eyes. Is that what you do?

I agree with the shout outs to the DPW for the storm clean up for the
most part except one thing. The "sidewalk to nowhere" on Pond Street has
been cleaned but the sidewalk from Overlea Road on Rockwood all the way
to Boardman has not. There are several neighborhoods in this area and
these sidewalks get a lot of use. The people in these neighborhoods with
elementary school aged children are also expected to pay a bus fee
because of their proximity to the schools. Are they supposed to walk on
the edge of 115 during morning rush hour?
On another note. We have a
coffee shop. Bourques. We need a good, small town feel Irish Pub in the
center of town.
- SC
2/17 1:36am
AB-G, the fact that the democratic machine is seeking to find any
information to use against Mr. Winslow is not at all surprising. Soros
is just one person funding these types of inquiries. It is simply
politics as usual here in the Commonwealth.
Also, there is no
correlation between the way auto mechanics bill for services, and the
way that other contractors bill for services. MG seemingly has a
legitimate gripe, but comparing the two industries is comparing apples
to oranges.

"Winslow Gets a Trim to Help Stop Taxpayers from Getting a Haircut"
Taunton, MA, February 16, 2013 -- Today, United States Senate
candidate Rep. Dan Winslow (R-Norfolk) got a haircut at the Winthrop
Street Barber Shop in Taunton, because he needed one. Taxpayers,
on the other hand, don't need one at this time when the country is
still recovering from the worst recession since the great depression
and when unemployment is still hovering at 7.9 percent.
``As we sit on the brink of sequestration cuts in the tune of $83
billion in both defense and non-defense cuts, Congress has once
again left important decision regarding the fiscal stability of our
country to the last minute, leaving taxpayers vulnerable to more
tax hikes and fewer jobs.'' Winslow said. ``On top of which, lawmakers
and the President have left for a nine day recess without a solid
deal before the March 1 deadline of across-the-board cuts.''
Further Winslow said,
``As I travel around the Commonwealth campaigning in this fast paced
special election for the United States Senate, and as I listen to
people's stories as they struggle to pay their bills, provide for
their families and, in some cases find employment, it makes this
race all that more important to send someone with my experience to
Washington who is willing to make reducing the debt and creating
jobs a priority. Sequestration is proof that Washington isn't
working. It's time to send new people to Congress.''
- DW
2/17 1:31am
MG & AB-G, You haven't a clue what it takes to run a service company. We
have been discussed this before on this board. Most service oriented
companyies charge a 2-hour minimum on a call because it will tie up 2 hours
of their time to provide such a small service. They have so much overhead to
provide this valuable service to you. Some will also charge a vehicle charge
on top of that. I suppose if you didn't like that you could take the
appliance out and bring it to them to save a little money.

Statement by Dan Winslow (R-Norfolk) on Democrats' call for pledge in US Senate
special election.
I support reforming the way we finance campaigns in this country. But I am
surprised with such an urgent need for action in Washington, DC that anyone
would be wasting time going over old plays that won't produce a single job, a
better education, a more secure retirement, a cleaner environment, a lower
deficit, or an honest and straightforward way to finance our elections.
For congressmen Markey and Lynch to posture about outside money in politics when
their coffers are already filled with money from outside Massachusetts just
shows you how inauthentic this pledge really is. And the national Democrats
already are spending money here by sending in their dirty tricks troops to my
town.
I welcome any outside group to contribute positive bio or issue ads, mailings,
social media and the like. I am running a different kind of campaign. I am not
an entrenched Washington insider who has to sign a pledge in order to run a
fair, clean, positive campaign.

I just heard on Howie Carr's show at 3:15 today (the 13th) that someone
from George Soros' organization had gone to TH to ask for the last 10
years of Planning Board minutes with the intention of finding something
they could use against Dan Winslow. I immediately called over there (I
don't know at what time they may have shown up) and couldn't get an
answer from either the Clerk or the Administrator's office, which is
unusual. I find it hard to believe Carr would make a statement like
that, so definitively, if he hadn't gotten it from a "reliable source".
It doesn't serve him to spread idle gossip on the air and look like a
fool or be accused of lying. Anyone know anything?

To AB-G, who was asking about folks who receive home delivery of the Herald,
I too get home delivery of the Globe from Gary Lee Anderson. I have
received his numerous letters in with the paper recently. I have to say he
is the most reliable newspaper deliveryperson. And what a character! All I
can say is that it is a bit of a dying industry, and he certainly holds up
his end of the bargain. My paper is consistently delivered very early each
morning. That's what matters the most.

2/13 9:15pm
NORFOLK - State Representative Dan Winslow (R-Norfolk), candidate for the United
States Senate seat in Massachusetts, today issued a ``tipping point timeline'' of
the key fiscal events during the campaign that will highlight Washington
gridlock that is putting the Nation's economic recovery at risk.
``Washington isn't working. Too often the Washington insiders talk past each
other rather than work together to solve problems,'' said Winslow. ``The scope of
the problem is clear: at the current rate of spending, the size of the federal
debt will soon surpass the size of the national economy. What isn't clear is
Washington's will to fix it.''
``Each American's share of the gross debt equals more than $200,000 when unfunded
obligations are included. That means that every child born in the United
States
enters this world with the equivalent of a mortgage they owe and no house to
show for it. It is immoral and undemocratic for Washington to shift the burden
of current federal spending onto our children and generations to come. They
don't even have a vote in the matter.''
``The good news is that it's not too late to change the course of our future, if
we start now by electing a proven problem solver to the United States Senate. If
elected, I will make growing jobs and opportunity and reducing the federal debt
and deficit my top priorities to get America working again. It is crucial to
remember that this special election will occur on a timeline when important
decisions can and should be made in Congress. And if our elected leaders
fail to
get the job done, then it's time for new leaders,'' noted
Winslow.

Would be so nice to have a nice sandwich/coffee shop there on corner of
Boardman and Main Street, and had ice cream too! A Stop and Shop would
cause an awful lot of traffic jams especially with the rotary there.
Imagine how that would be? Norfolk center was not meant for that amount
of traffic flow, and I would rather not see it happen. When you
experience city living and its "just deal with it mentality" you
appreciate this fair town and its old new england feel.

2/12 11:43am
I am not privy to any inside information of note, and I will refrain
from sarcasm. I can tell you NO Super Stop and Shop will be coming in
here. There simply is not room, and it would require, I believe, much
more infrastructure than is there now, such as more extensive water
service, not to mention access. There are too many other supermarkets
nearby, so I don't think any S&S will materialize. The little building
next to Walgreens, owned by S&S, is being offered at a ridiculously high
rent per square foot, which tells me (or anyone else) they don't want to
rent it. The inquisitive, anonymous (I still don't get that) poster
only just made inquiries a few weeks ago, if that. His project couldn't
be a "done deal", could it? They couldn't even get Trader Joe's in here
(if indeed they pitched to them), and they are much smaller. We're
darned lucky we have Patriot Place.

More shout outs for the DPW crews! I live at the end of a dead end
street that gets zero traffic, and the plows were out during the storm
and we had no trouble getting out after it was over. On Sunday, I drove

as the road conditions went way down hill. Also impressive that we did
not need to cancel school when some of the towns nearby did. Thanks
guys!

Dear AB-G: I have been taking my 11 year old, 90 pound Golden, "Buck"
(aka "Killer" to his friends) to Amber at Petsmart for most of his noble
life, and we have been thrilled with the service and attention she gives
us. Amber has taken Buck in before opening hours, has stayed late to
finish him, and has called me during his spa stays (and believe me, he
goes to the spa more than I do!) with concerns for things I might have
missed in his daily maintenance. I hope you'll give Amber another
chance. She not only owns and grooms dogs, but she has shown them in the
ring. By all means, if her service has come up short in your
expectation, let her know, and she'll strive to meet your expectations.
My only problem with Amber is that Buck practically pulls my shoulder
out of its socket everytime he sees her.

Thanks P.,
This means a lot to our "guys" -
They worked right through the storm into the following night (32 hours-
plowing non stop) - then back at it for another 12 hour shift on Sunday.
Monday through the rest of the week we will open drainage, carve out mail
boxes so Residents can receive their mail.
Clear back intersections for vehicle - "line of sight".
Still a lot to do with a forecast of more bad weather later this week.
Lastly,we are running out of salt supply - we don't have enough for
another storm and the salt companies are backed up - no deliveries in
sight!
So again thanks for the kind words.

[Update 4:18pm: sorry, fixed the broken email address - Wm.]
2/8 2:30pm
NORFOLK, MA - In a letter to Republican voters and activists sent this
afternoon, Representative Dan Winslow announced that he is a candidate for the
US Senate. A copy of the letter follows.
On June 9, 1999, I received the following note dated June 2 and written by Ray
Shamie. I wanted to share his thoughts with you:
Dear Dan & Susan,
Thank you so very much for writing to us at this time. I am sorry to say
that I
have lung cancer--both lungs, and have only a few weeks remaining. Of course,
such estimates can be put on a par with stock market predictions and weather
forecasts. You read them, disregard them and go about your business.
One of the great joys of my life is to add up those I have helped to achieve
positions of power and influence in gov' t.
In the passage of time if I have touched the lives of other people that has made
them better citizens or more active in the pursuit of sound policies I am more
than content.
Best to you and Susan, God bless you and continue to teach the Shamie gospel.
With much love,
Ray
Ray Shamie died on June 8, 1999, the day before I received his letter. I
have
been teaching the Shamie gospel ever since. At a time when the MassGOP seemed
beyond hope, we pulled ourselves up by our grassroots and won half the
constitutional offices, legislative offices, and two congressional seats. And we
can do it again now.
In my work as a Ward and Town Committee member, State Committee member, and as
the General Counsel to the GOP (a position I created under Ray's
leadership to
take the fight to the Democrats), I have worked to advance our core principles
of freedom, respect for the individual, opportunity and responsibility. It is a
message that resonates with Massachusetts voters when they have a choice
of
candidates.
I have won every local and state election where I appeared on the ballot
as a
candidate, starting as a Planning Board member and Town Moderator. I won
my
first electi on for State Representative with nearly 70% of the vote against a
very well self-financed Democrat. And I won my second term of office in November
without any opposition, even after a statewide Party boss from the other
side of
the aisle declared in the Boston Globe ``You tell Winslow we're coming for
him.'' Why? Because I bring the principled fight to the Democrats
and I have a
record of leadership, reform and results.
In the last fiscal crisis, following 9/11, I resigned from a lifetime position
of Judge to serve as the Chief Legal Counsel to Governor Romney. I was part of
the Romney senior team that helped turn around the Massachusetts fiscal
meltdown. We accomplished that goal with new ideas, new thinking and a lot of
hard work. And with the support of the people of Massachusetts.
I will be a candidate for the Republican nomination for the office of United
States Senator. As a native of Western Massachusetts, a hardworking middle class
family, and as an experienced problem solver, I believe that the next two years
will be our last, best opportunity to avoid the tipping point of a runaway
deficit and crushing federal debt. I have a proven record of respect for
Second
Amendment constitutional freedoms. My experience as a fiscal conservative and
problem solver is experience we need in Washington DC. Our future depends on
getting this right.
My US Senate campaign website will soon be up and running at www.danwinslow.com
and I would deeply appreciate your endorsement and support. More importantly, I
ask your prayers and good will for my family and me in this effort. I will give
it everything I have. Please let me know if you'd like me to meet with voters in
your area and I will travel the state. And I invite your suggestions for
places
to go and people to visit in your area, as well as your ideas.
Together, Massachusetts will make a difference for America.
Respectfully,
Dan Winslow

ZM: I have found the guys at Norfolk Auto, (508) 528-0296, to be good
mechanics, who will not charge you any more than they reasonably have
to. They are located about a half mile past the Catholic Church,
directly across from the prison.
They have been very honest about the problems with our cars, never
trying to oversell anything. It is a local family business which is
always a plus, but it is not a spotless garage, so don't expect anything
fancy. It has never mattered to me though, as it reinforces they focus
on being good mechanics. They also stand by their work. Once a battery
died early; they replaced it at no cost on the spot, no questions asked.

gymnasium since school will be in session.
For those Norfolk residents interested in running for Town office, papers
are available now at the Town Clerk's office and are due back by March
12th. If anyone has any questions, please call me at 508-528-1400 or

BOSTON - Feb. 5, Dan Winslow, former Massachusetts Judge and Republican State
Representative from Norfolk, announced today that he is forming an exploratory
committee for U.S. Senate to fill the vacancy left by John Kerry.
``Today I'm taking the necessary steps to form an exploratory committee to test
the waters for the U.S. Senate. We need to fix a broken Washington where
progress is being hampered by partisan gridlock. If we continue to elect the
same Washington politicians, we can not expect different results.''
``The people of Massachusetts and all Americans deserve solutions from their
elected officials. Washington needs to focus on problem solving and implement
ideas that will create jobs and grow our economy,'' said Winslow.

JH - I think you may not know what the word 'literal' means. The
literal translation of 'you're welcome' in French is 'vous etes
beinvenu', which is nonsensical. The common response to thank you in
French or Spanish is 'de rien' or 'de nada', both of which mean 'its
nothing'. I guess 'no problem' is a similar response but is also not a
literal translation.
JD may have slightly overreacted to the response 'no problem', however
in most business situations more formal that a gas station or grocer
store, 'you're welcome' is the appropriate response.

NORFOLK (February 1, 2013)-- In my public service as a State
Representative, a Judge, and as Legal Counsel to a Governor during
a time of fiscal crisis, I have worked with people of diverse
backgrounds and beliefs, all united by the common goal that we can
make Massachusetts a better place for ourselves and our families.
Massachusetts Republicans, especially middle class Republicans who
call Amherst their hometown, seem offer a different perspective
from the national GOP brand. I am honored by so many calls and
emails urging me to run for the United States Senate. But I will
reflect this weekend about my own family's needs and whether there
is room in the national Republican Party for a member who is both
fiscally prudent and socially tolerant.

Letter being circulated by the town:
The Norfolk Police is currently investigating two residential house breaks.
One occurred on Sat. and one yesterday. Both houses were very close to
RT.115 but on opposite ends of town. A white minivan (poss. Dodge Caravan)
was seen leaving the first break. It was operated by a white male. The
witness stated that the van had a yellow plate with blue letters. This is
consistent with plates from New York . We are asking residents to be
vigilant in looking for this vehicle. If you happen to see a vehicle
matching this description please call the Norfolk Police or whatever town
you happen to be in if it is seen. Also be aware of strange vehicles in
your neighbor s driveways. If something seems out of place, try and get a
license plate and call us right away. It is very common for people
committing theses day time breaks to knock on the door of the house first
and see if anyone is home. If someone comes to your door and asks a
question that does not make sense or does not have solicitor ID issued from
the Norfolk Police please call 911 and try and get a description of the
vehicle and a license plate. Also, almost everyone keeps all of their
jewelry in a jewelry box on their dresser in the master bedroom. The bad
guys know this and go right there. They empty the jewelry box and will
also look in the dresser drawers. Please please please hide your jewelry
someplace else !! Most intruders are only in the house for a matter of
minutes and they do not want to spend much time in the house, if the
jewelry is not easily accessible they will often leave. If your house is
broken into it is important to not touch anything or go inside. As soon as
you realize something is wrong, back out and call 911. On a final note,
when a break occurs it is a huge help if we have pictures of jewelry taken
and serial numbers of electronics. Take a couple of minutes and photo all
of your jewelry serial numbers of lap tops, TVs , IPads ect. Then email the
pictures to yourself so they will be someplace secure. Thank you.

something at that Boardman location or at the Walgreens location.
Please: a cozy restaurant that we can walk to, or make a short drive, or

stations where patrols/units must test the Scout skills and their
leadership abilities, earning points toward a total score. The units
must transport their gear on a homemade sled and pulled by Scounts. The
two packs earned numerous individual awards and Pack 125 earned First

Although the term "You're Welcome" dates back to the 1600s, it
didn't become popular as a response to 'Thank You' until the early
1900s. Can you imagine the horror of everyone who remembered the
good old days of 1899 when the youth in their day would never say
such an improper response?
Also, can you believe that for French and Spanish speakers, 'You're
Welcome' literally translates to 'It's Nothing'. How coarse of them
all... Even more amazing, an accepted synonym of 'You're Welcome'
is... 'No Problem' - you can even look that up!
Lastly, you forgot to sign your posting "Get off my lawn, you kids!"

I think the idea of Norfolk having it's own coffeehouse/cafe is a
fantastic idea!!! There would be no need to leave town to meet
friends for that type of setting. It is a convenient location not
only for Norfolkians, but for people from/traveling to Franklin,

I've mentioned the post soliciting input to about 8 different

to see something in Norfolk like Pejamajo Cafe in Holliston - it is
superb! It has a little of everything in a great atmosphere... even
has small music venues on weekends for local talent. Or like Perks
in Norwood. Something along those lines. There would still be a
niche for Dunkin Donuts... for those on

Thanks Hilary... that makes a lot of sense. On a local level however,
what is the actual annual dog licensing fee used for? Are the funds used
directly for the continued battle against rabies? The policy you state
could be equally effective without any fee at all other than a small
charge for the tag itself. Monies raised could come in the form of fines
for the enforcement of the rabies vaccination laws currently in place
and executed against those who fail to inocculate their pets.
I suspect part of the license fee is used to purchase rabies vacinations
for strays etc and perhaps also for the free rabies clinic (if we still
have that). If this is the case, are those programs funded 100% on a
local level or are state/government funds provided as well? It's hard to
imagine that 100% of the dog licensing fee's go 100% towards rabies
prevention but I may well be wrong in assuming that plus, the actual
breakdown of how the funds are used would be difficult to determine and
disclose I'm sure.
As residents in any town or city, their is no doubt that many of the
fee's charged by our local governments are taxes in disguise. It is just
the way it is these days... "It is what it is"

RE; Coffee shop / cafe. I think it's good business for any town. In my
opinion, I would think the Boardman / Main address would be tough with
the morning and evening commutes. I wonder if the nice, empty new
building near Walgreens would be a suitable location? It's off the main
street, looks like it could support a drive through, seems to be plenty
of parking and great access for the folks heading to/from the commuter
parking lot as well as folks that live/work in the area. I had heard
something about the town shooting down a previous idea of a shop with a
drive thru citing traffic concerns, but I don't know how true it was and
I don't think that the location near Walgreens would be any worse than
Dunkin's traffic that blocks main street during busy times.

MG to clarify what dog licensing is for: US Dog licensing originated
due to the outbreak of Rabies in NYC back in the early to mid 1900s.
There was no way to ensure that people were actually vaccinating
their dogs and it was at a high time where dogs were infecting
people. World wide dogs are the #1 carrier of rabies till to this
day. In the US with rabies protocols and mandatory licensing in
all (or almost all) states has been able to almost eradicate rabies
in dogs (we did have a puppy test positive for rabies in Foxboro a
few years back and in Norfolk roughly 15 years ago a litter of
puppies were exposed to a rabid skunk). Cats have a higher rate
of rabies because people tend to not be as vigilant with their
vaccinations, they are roaming animals by nature, and there is no
enforcement through licensing.
The licensing itself is a way to regulate that all dogs are vaccinated
against the rabies virus since we know that rabies is a fatal disease
when not treated quickly after the bite incident. When a dog is
not vaccinated and receives a wound of unknown origin (fight with
another animal, abscess etc) that animal will have to be quarantined
for a six month period under next to near isolation by one handler
in a secure environment. The only alternative to quarantine is
euthanasia. In essence, licensing is a security measure to make
sure all dogs are vaccinated and has created one of the biggest
turn around for a disease in the public health industry. It is
estimated that $300 million is spent annually in the US for rabies
prevention education and prevention. I don't have my statistics
in front of me at the moment but I will guesstimate that 3 out of
10 unlicensed dogs that come into my care are also not current on
their vaccinations. Dogs, cats and ferrets have now been mandated
to all be vaccinated against rabies (ferrets are new addition to
the law). When a stray comes in to our custody, they do not leave
without an up to date vaccination. And even then the vaccine doesn't
reach 100% efficacy for 30 days after being administered. Rabies
is present in Norfolk. I do come across it in wildlife and measures
from this department are taken on scene to reduce the spread of the
disease. I hope this clears up the confusion behind licensing.
Sincerely,
- Hilary Cohen, Norfolk Animal Control

When did it become acceptable for young people to answer back when you say
"thank you" by saying "no problem"!!
The traditional "you're welcome" sounds so much better than "No Problem" when
you thank the kid pumping your gas or handing you your change at the
checkout.
I feel like saying: "Really? it was no problem? - well that's good because
you are getting paid to do this job and it shouldn't be a problem."

A reader sent in a list of stores offering senior discounts.
The discounts must be requested, they are not automatic.
The list is long, and continues on the linked page - Wm.
Senior Discounts
Keep this list - - - and Send a copy to your
senior friends and relatives.
As I was waiting in line behind an older
gentleman at Wendy's recently, I heard him ask for his senior discount.
The girl at the register apologized and charged him less. When I asked
the man what the discount was, he told me that seniors over age 55 gets
10% off everything on the menu, every day.
Being of 'that' age myself, I figured I might
as well ask for the discount too.
This incident prompted me to do some research,
and I came across a list of restaurants, supermarkets, department
stores, travel deals and other types of offers giving various discounts
with different age requirements. I was actually surprised to see how
many there are and how some of them start at the young age of 50 .
This list may not only be useful for you, but
for your friends and family, too.
Dunkin Donuts gives free coffee to
people over 55 . If you're paying for a cup every day, you might want
to start getting it for free.
YOU must ASK for your discount !

News from Mirror Lake. The calm frigid days and nights have given rise
to some beautiful ice on the lake. Once every ten years or so the ice
is clear as glass and super smooth. You can see the bottom to about
three or four feet. I am not sure of the thickness but I believe it is
about 3 to 4 inches. Use your best judgement but I weigh 250 pounds and
my son about 150 and we were walking on it side by side with no cracking

Hello.
This may be a long shot but can anyone help me to install a rear view
camera in my Toyota? It is supposed to be easy to install, but I got
stuck on connecting the wires to the back up light wires and a power
source in front near the camera. It is model PLCM34WIR made by PYLE.
Please call Alan at 508-528-1976 if you know how to do this. Thanks!

Hello. I'm in basement cleanup mode and I have an antique drop
front desk that is looking for a good home. It is in very nice condition
with 3 large drawers. The top drops down to make a writing surface and
behind the drop are several cubbies and small drawers. I would call the
finish as a nice red oak in color though I am not quite sure of the
wood. This is an antique piece and very solid. No particle board or
fillers. It's a very nice looking piece but there are some
scuffs inside the drop down section. The measurements are: 42
1/2'' high, 34'' wide. 9 1/4'' deep at the top and
with the drop down it measures 29'' deep. Please look at the
photos and if this is something you could use in your home, please call
Alan at 508-528-1976. I am asking $80 Thanks so much. Oh...the third
photo shows a missing knob. It has been found so all knobs and draw
pulls are original and present.

AB-G: Keep your Amaryllis in the pot and treat it like a houseplant
right now. Keep in the light and water lightly so that leaves stay
alive. The leaves are collecting energy now and sending it back
down to the bulb for a repeat performance.
In May, take the whole bulb out of the pot, and plant the bulb in
the sunny garden for the summer. Around Labor Day, dig it up, brush
soil off, cut off the leaves, and place in a dark paper bag in your
cool dry cellar.
In November, start over by potting it up, watering it, and putting
in the light. Don't use garden soil; use sterile potting soil or a
coco brick is even better.
MB: Best jeweler ever and a hands-on owner who is a gemologist.
Scott owns Goldmine's 9 West Jewelers on Rt. 9 in Framingham. Used
to be called just Goldmine Jewelers. Not close by, but I've used
them for years, and he has done design work for me.

The King Philip Music program with the
sponsorship of the KPMA will hold two chamber concerts on:
Wednesday January 30th and
Thursday January 31st
King Philip High School Auditorium.
7:00 PM - open to the public.
"Chamber music has been a staple of the
music program's culture for fifteen years. Students in the high school
music program have been preparing this intimate music with once a week
rehearsals after school since the beginning of December. Chamber music
performance offers students a unique experience. They are not conducted.
Each student is alone on their individual part. It is a true test of
musicianship for all participants.
Now, with the generous support of the KPMA
these small ensembles are coached by our after school music faculty.
After previous chamber concerts it was noted, "This was special! There
was such variety. Every five or ten minutes, a different group came on
stage and showed off exactly where they are in their musical
development. "
There will brass quintets, clarinet
choirs, woodwind quintets, flute ensembles, brass quartets, percussion
duos, saxophone quartets and quintets, a jazz combo, and many different
levels performed.
Make plans to attend at least one of these
enchanting concerts. If you attend for the entire evening you will most
assuredly come away feeling you were a part of an evolving culture of
musical elegance that is unique and special at King Philip." Peter
Tileston
The King Philip Music Association is a
non-profit 501(c)(3) volunteer parent group founded in 1984 to support
the King Philip Regional School District music programs. Parents of all
music students (including color guard) are automatically members of this
organization. Ask how you can get involved today! Contact Barbara

The Norfolk Council on Aging is pleased to announce the 10th anniversary
of its Silver Set Gazette television program brought to you by Norfolk
Community Television (NCTV). Established 10 years ago, with the
cooperation and assistance of Paul Guertin, NCTV manager (now retired),
hosts Norma Shruhan, the Director of the Norfolk Senior Center, and
Richard Connors, a Council on Aging Board Member, have made the program
a great source for Senior Center news and updates.
The popular cable broadcast is both informative and
lighthearted (and serious when appropriate) with lots of conversational
humor for an audience of seniors and non-seniors alike interested in
Senior Center programs and activities. The show also showcases guests,
including Jason Talerman, the Chairman of the Council on Aging Board,
and Bill Crane, the President of the Friends of the Council on Aging. In
addition, guest-participants are often interviewed to introduce and
describe new or ongoing activities for both seniors and non-seniors at
the Center.
On this anniversary the Norfolk Council on Aging would also
like to salute and thank Katie Woodhams (our photo guru) and the folks
at NCTV for their support and assistance over the years.
For those interested, the dates and broadcast times of the
Silver Set Gazette Program can be found by going to the NCTV site at

is available by going to

I'd like to add my recommendation to the new 'Asian Village' across
from Fore Kicks. The food is plentiful and well prepared. We've used
them several times for quick dinners, and today we tried the lunch
'Combination Specials' served until 3pm. I couldn't believe the
amount of food we got for $6.95 including your choice of soups,
appetizers and rice in addition to the entree. There's no way I could
eat the entire portion, so in essence, I got 2 meals for 7 bucks. I
have no connection with the place. I'm just someone who enjoys a

Recently 26 Norfolk Girl Scouts came together to create messages of
cheer and condolences for the victims of the Newtown, CT shooting. Of
those that died, 10 had ties to Girl Scouts ~ eight were Daisy Scouts
and two were family members of Girl Scout families. The Girl Scout
Council of Connecticut is planning a memorial service for the families
in mid-January and has requested Girl Scouts to send messages, thoughts
or prayers on trefoilsto remember the victims and help heal. These
messages will be presented to the families. Messages have been received
from Girl Scouts all over the world. The trefoil is the emblem of Girl
Scouts; its three leaves represent the three parts of the Girl Scout
Promise. A number of Norfolk Girl Scouts, ages 9-13, gathered together
to make trefoil art on Sunday, January 6, 2013 from 11am-1pm at the
Norfolk Library. They created 176 trefoils that were decorated with
stickers and words of encouragement. The girls sent to trefoils off to
Connecticut with love and well wishes for the families of the recent
attack. A service project is also in the works for the spring.

Thank you for your kind words on 1/9 at 2:13 pm. My goodness, I
could not have hoped for a better review! I should hire you as my

head and dark feathers yet--a few more years.

Winslow praises governor's initiative to reduce UI fraud; proposes
civilian conservation corps for long-term unemployed.
BOSTON (January 9, 2013)-- State Representative Dan Winslow
(R-Norfolk) today filed legislation to create a Civilian Conservation
Corps where persons receiving long-term unemployment compensation
would be required to perform eight hours weekly of community service
as a condition of receiving unemployment compensation. Winslow's
proposal comes on the heels of a call by Massachusetts Governor
Deval L. Patrick to reduce fraud by persons receiving unemployment
compensation.
"The Governor deserves credit to trying to stamp out fraud in the
UI system," said Winslow, "but the best way to reduce fraud from
people working under the table is to require a reasonable amount
of community service to be performed by people receiving long-term
unemployment benefits. It's a lot harder to cheat the system when
you need to be in two places at once to do it. Requiring community
service also has the value of providing a public benefit from people
receiving UI compensation and helping to maintain a work history
for people who otherwise cannot find work."
Under Winslow's CCC proposal, any person who receives unemployment
benefits for more than 180 days in any 365 day period shall be
required to perform 8 hours of community service weekly as a condition
of receiving further UI benefits. The community service will be
organized as a "Civilian Conservation Corps" under the direction
of the Executive Office of Environmental Affairs, but the Executive
Office can enter into agreements with any state or municipal agency
for community service work to be performed at no cost. The concept
of a CCC was used nationally during the Great Depression and many
public works projects from that era still exist in Massachusetts.
The text of Winslow's proposed legislation follows:
AN ACT PROMOTING COMMUNITY SERVICE BY THE LONG-TERM UNEMPLOYED
THROUGH A CIVILIAN CONSERVATION CORPS
Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General
Court assembled, and by the authority of the same as follows: SECTION
1. Section 24 of chapter 151A of the General Laws, as appearing in
the 2010 Official Edition, is hereby amended by inserting at the
end thereof the following paragraph:-
(d) Any person who has received unemployment insurance benefits for
more than 180 days in any 365 day period shall be required to perform
8 hours weekly of public community service under the supervision
of the executive office of environmental affairs as part of a
civilian conservation corps, as a condition of receiving continued
unemployment insurance benefits.
For purposes of administering this section, the secretary of the
executive office of environmental affairs may enter into agreements
with any other state or municipal agency for the deployment,
management and supervision of the community service volunteers.

We are working on our second edition of Norfolk Stories. This is our oral
history book, an interesting way to learn about Norfolk history over the
past lifetime of our senior citizens of Norfolk. We published our first
edition in the 1990's. Now we need help with the support work involved
with putting together the next edition. Most of the interviews are
completed. If you are a student looking for community service work and you
can work on the computer, transcribing or editing, we need you. You can
work at any time at your own pace. In the past one of our members has
worked in the Historical Commission's town hall office. If you are at
home, retired or if you are working and would like to help please call
Betsy 508 528 2604. Most of our members start out as associate members,
but to volunteer this would be your option. You don't have to join the
commission or attend meetings. Thanks for volunteering.

BR(#1): There is a small antique store here in town. Take 115 south
and turn right on 1A. In the group of stores where the One Cup and In
the Loop are, there's a store called Nothing's New.
My very favorite,
however, is The Commodities Market (a consignment store) at the
intersection of 140 and 1A in Wrentham. Take a right off Main St at the
cemetery heading away from the center, cross 115 and continue straight
to Wrentham. At some point this street becomes 140 near the high
school. Look for the Dunkin Donuts as you approach 1A. The CM is
directly across. They have an incredible assortment which constantly
changes. It's not a high-end store like you might see on Beacon Hill or
in Essex but you can find some very nice things. I'm sure they have a
website.
Sorry I don't know the names of all the streets; I've only
liived here 16 years.

Well, LD, that makes me feel better in that evidently I'm not alone. I
looked at the site. I think of "city driving" as downtown Boston, not

clunker. Thanks,

ES: That's a good question. Had it been something minor, absolutely I
would have called. But a door that doesn't close properly? Closing
properly is the essence of a door, and immediately obvious, no? Surely
it should have been checked before he left. I didn't hear any comments
about the door being imperfect or the frame being crooked. This was an
outside door off the screened porch. Good for him to have such a loyal
following. This happened to be my experience.

I hope many of you were able to visit Tina Addison's art opening
and book signing at the Grange this past weekend. She put together
a very nice show of watercolors highlighting the rural pleasures
of dear Norfolk and similar settings. Before I continue, I need to
say that I do not know the artist at all.
The paintings were small and personal - focused studies of vegetables,
fruit and nature - each an intense, purposeful, concentration on
the subject - quiet secrets. That said, I think her building
"portraits" are her best work. Please pine if you missed these.
Well-done studies of aged wooden structures along the lines of
well-known Maine artist Andrew Wyeth and his son Jamie, but far
less pinched, restrained or perfect. Norfolk's barns, sheds and
porches treated in a manner befitting themselves. Plain speak -
loved them.
I was surprised by the very low prices the artist charged. I don't
know if she has a website, but for less than you think, you could
have something real hanging on your walls.

Concerning the Asian Village Restaurant: to affirm some of the recent
positive reviews on the new Asian Village on Pine Street. I tried it
over the weekend and the food was superb. It was all freshly made, the
best I have had. Pad Thai had large shrimp and large pieces of chicken
done perfectly. The Salt & Pepper Calamari was the best. Ordered it
mild as a prior reviewer had suggested. All take-out, no tables. Hope
the preparation stays as good as they continue to grow. Great to have a
another local business that exceeds expectations.

any of you have one and could tell me what miles per gallon you get.
Mine has slightly over 20,000 miles and according to the screen on the

worse than the '99 Volvo I had which was larger and weighed more.

Norfolk Lions to Hold 2nd Health & Wellness Fair
The Norfolk Lions, in conjunction with representatives of the Medical and
Wellness Community in the surrounding area, will hold the second "Health &
Wellness Fair" for the Town of Norfolk and surrounding area on Saturday,
March 2, 2013 from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. The event will be held at the newly
constructed Freeman Kennedy School, Boardman Street, Norfolk MA.
The day is being held in recognition of the need to make information
available to the public that can help people make good decisions about life
style and wellness. At the same time screening will be provided to assist
in early diagnosis of conditions that frequently affect wellness, such as
blood pressure, glaucoma, hearing loss, skin care, stress relief, exercise
programs, nutrition and diabetes.
New to the event this year will be the New England Organ Bank and the
American Red Cross Bloodmobile which will hold a blood drive. Always
recognizing the need for blood, the Norfolk Lions is thrilled to have this
new, major participant. The Avon Breast Cancer Awareness Foundation will be
in attendance as well.
Representatives will be on hand to provide instruction and consultation on a
variety of health and wellness issues. Games and token giveaways will be
made available to reinforce the recognition of the wide variety of resources
readily available in our town and region. This is a FREE service event
sponsored by the Norfolk Lions and open to the public.
"We are thrilled to be able to offer this event to the town of Norfolk and
the surrounding communities", say Paul Terrio and Al Bozza, the
co-coordinators of the event. Al Bozza further goes on to say that
nutrition will play a major role in this coming year's event. Al, who is
involved with the Nutrition Task Force for the area, is striving to provide
good eating and cooking demonstrations at the event.
Along with American the Red Cross, other participants include the Lions
EyeMobile, dental care, chiropractic, mobility, exercise and general
wellness participants. Games, competitions, instruction and prizes will all
be a part of the event.

I totally respect AB-G for her honesty in providing a very kindly worded
opposing viewpoint. I hardly think stating that this guy "put a door on

he's had several satisfied customers post positive comments about his
work, I see AB-G's comment as more of a caveat emptor. Given he's a
local, I'd love to see him offer to come fix a problem he created 12
years ago. Then, maybe, I'd consider using his services too.

JM: I love Medway Tailoring on Rt. 109 across from Ocean State Job Lot.
He's a real tailor who can totally dismantle a garment and put it back
together. I finally found him after many bad experiences with dry
cleaner tailors.

Just had our snowblower repaired by Mike Vountatsos, a Norfolk resident
(found his info on Norfolknet). He answered my call promptly and came to
my house within 24 hrs. He assessed and corrected the problem in about
30 min, right in my garage. His prices are a lot lower than other repair
companies and he did not even charge extra for coming on a holiday. He
does other equip repairs as well and can be reached at 508-400-2836.

Re tailoring: I went to the Medway Tailor (I think that's the name of
the business) after he was recommended here (so it should be OK with
MJD for me to get on this particular bandwagon) and I thought his work
was impeccable*. He is a trained tailor from Turkey, not someone who
learned to sew. His prices are not cheap, but fair*. His shop is on 109
in Medway just west of the Burger King on the eastbound side in a small
white building**.

The Gary Mirliss Memorial Blood Drive has arrived!
Only 4 Day Away,
Saturday January 5th, 2013 from 9am to 3pm at the King Philip Middle
School, 18 King St, Norfolk, MA

shortage; with your donation, the shortage will be lessened or even
prevented.
Walk-ins will be accommodated but it is recommended that you make an
appointment! We have just been able to expand the number of appointment
throughout the day leaving spots open for all to fill!
To make you appointment you can go to
www.halfpints.childrenshospital.org

Just wanted to put this out there...
The huge selling movie and book "The Hunger Games" that everyone raves
about. I saw it and was appalled at the context of the movie, children
killing children.
In real life, does this sound familiar to anyone besides myself? Hint:
school dangers and such.
I'm left asking myself, why does this sort of "entertainment" sell and
why it is also supported so widely by so many people/parents that also
allow their own children to read and view this type of media?
We seem to be developing a senseless insensitivity to our fellow
persons in society.
