  • 12/27 6:58pm   Today my Verizon telephone service went out. I have the old-style telephone service (copper line), not FiOS. My investigation so far indicates that they shut off, without notice, a piece of equipment at Fruit and Seekonk. I was wondering if anyone else lost their Verizon telephone service on Friday, 12/27/13 in the area of Noon Hill Estates and Jane and Paul's farm? If so, please contact me through the webmaster. • 12/27 6:37pm   Deadline for S. C. Norfolk indoor soccer session 2 registration extended.
The deadline for registration for the 2013/2014 Indoor Soccer Session 2 is approaching. Registration is now open and has been extended and will run through December 30, 2013. We are looking to field Boys and Girls teams from U9 through U12 ages for 6v6 boarded and unboarded games. Again for Session 2, we are also forming a team(s) for Grade 2 Girls 5v5 Macro Soccer.
Register for Session 2 here: http://norfolk.adminsports.org/content/registration
Do not register through the Fore Kicks web site.
SC Norfolk 2013/2014 Indoor Soccer Session 2 (Fore Kicks Session 23) starts on 1/27/2014 and completes on 4/13/2014. The cost per player for the 6v6 programs is $150.00 for the session. Each session will include a minimum of 9 scheduled games plus playoffs for the top 4 teams, or top 50% of teams in bracket. An SC Norfolk uniform from the Fall 2012 program, or later, is required . Uniforms can be purchased through the registration page at the same time you register for the program.
For the Second Grade Girls 5v5 "Macro Soccer" program, the cost per player is $90.00 for the session. The session will run for eight weeks, starting on January 24, 2014. SC Norfolk's Macro league teams are for 2nd grade girls to serve as a step towards the 6v6 format and to develop the abilities of our younger soccer players. A goalie position is introduced but still limits the number of field players to four to maximize each player's touches on the ball. Play will be on a special taraflex surfaced court with a special ball designed for this format.
For more detailed information about the programs, please refer to the ForeKicks web site, but DO NOT register for the program through the Fore Kicks web site: http://www.forekicks.com/norfolk/shared/content/index.cfm?fuseaction=leagues

  • 12/27 6:35pm   PMM, I'm not sure why they built a new playground at Gump's with the one right down the street. Maybe someone can explain that to us. Why exactly they couldn't just build a new one at the same location at Boardman street is beyond my comprehension. Especially when they've had the sign out front trying to raise funds to rebuild the existing one. Where did the funds suddenly come from to build this new one? Are they from the money we pay for supposed "open space" procurement?
This is exactly the type of thing that happens when you vote to give government more money. They will find infinite ways to waste it wether you agree with it or not. I could have found better ways to spend my portion of that playground if they didn't tax me so much. I could use a portion of all that new pavement to fix my driveway.
As for my comments about the 3 one million dollar homes, that was kind of sarcasm also. I have no idea what anyone's intensions were/are with that property, but if that was their intension you know there would be people out there against it. It just seems all the 99%ers are out there begrudging anyone who has money to do that type of thing these days. They want them to give more of their hard earned money to the government that they think will go to one thing (wealth redistribution, education or in our towns case "open space") when in actuality a lot of it goes to waste (stupid IRS Star Trek spoofs, bigger government or in our towns case another playground).

  • 12/27 6:31pm   Hello, PMM. I apologized for saying that the 50 units on Main were not a choice. I thought they were low-income units; they are not. (Every town must have at least 10% low-income housing.) I suspect the idea is that if the housing is more dense, there will be more interest in retail coming to the center.
By "wealth-redistribution" I was referring to the notion of forcing towns to include housing that is affordable, so that the entire town cannot be a haven just for the rich and not folks who would otherwise (supposedly) be relegated to a town with, say, less well-appointed schools, better-kept roads, etc. You are right about that intersection.

[A lovely New Year's gift... sorry for posting it late - Wm.]

  • 12/27 6:26pm   The asphalt jungle gym that is the former Gumps farm is a disappointment so far (Paved paradise and put up a parking lot...). That drainage culvert fronting the street is a blight on the landscape. Why the original playground, which is on Boardman, had to move to this prime parcel on Rt 115 has always baffled me. I know it is long in the tooth, but it is unassuming, tucked in off the main drag. In addition, we already have the Pond Street Recreation complex and a revitalized playground at HOD school - this new playground seems to be a redundancy.
I thought that there were plans for a community garden at the Gumps site - is that still happening? Given its proximity to the Grange (with its agricultural roots and all of the funds that the town has dedicated to its renovation), it's too bad a farmer's market concept couldn't be a part of the land use. Norfolk Aggie in Walpole might be tapped on this possibility as well - a field station if you wish. With the de facto demise of Jane and Paul's farm, Norfolk needs to retain some of its rural character. Gumps Farm may have been a rustic farm stand (a poor man's Volante's Farm if you will), but it exuded a country character with its two llamas and split rail fencing. Now, I fear a sanitized suburban playscape devoid of country character.

  • 12/27 6:25pm   "I find it funny that people seem to push for change, then when it happens in their neighborhood, they're against it. You can't have it both ways. If you're going to vote a progressive agenda, eventually it is going to effect your neighborhood. If you don't want the rich guy building, say, 3 million dollar homes in your neighborhood ...then they... take advantage of another progressive law and build 40 low income units on the same lot".
Well said, DT. As far as the progressive playground, the new, expensive materials required to allow kids in wheelchairs to venture onto the lot or prevent others from getting too hurt are the result of progressivism, but I support that.

Conflicts of Interest / Actions on the Job (Section 19)

The law recognizes that your financial interest and those of your partners or close relatives could influence the way you do your job. To discourage ``self-dealing'', the law prohibits you from participating in a particular matter in which you or any of the following have a financial interest: your immediate family; your partner(s); a business organization in which you serve as an officer, director, trustee, partner or employee (including a non-profit organization); and any person or organization with whom you are negotiating or have any arrangement concerning prospective employment.

A ``particular matter'' is defined as an activity involving decision making or judgment and refers to specific projects and proceedings rather than general issues. If such a matter comes up, you would be allowed to participate in it only if your appointing official makes a written determination that your interest is not so substantial as to affect the integrity of your services. This exemption is not available to elected officials.

    - The above obtained via the Town Clerk's office of Norfolk, MA - http://www.virtualnorfolk.org/public_documents/norfolkma_clerk/CISummary.pdf
It is my understanding that at least one Planning Board member is directly related to the proposed private development of 106 and 108 Main St in Norfolk currently in question for approval.

  • 12/23 3:10pm   DT - Sometimes it's difficult to detect sarcasm in written form, even when you note it. Was someone proposing building 3 one-million dollar homes on those two parcels of land on Main Street? I would be OK with that! Regardless of the value of the homes, 3 homes on several acres near the center sounds a lot better than 50.
Regarding Gump's, we are relatively new to Norfolk (2007), so we kind of missed the benefit of having fresh produce right there, but I liked the look of it better than what's there now. I was thinking about that the other day, driving from Millis back to town on 115. I love seeing stretches of totally undeveloped land. Imagine that. I still don't know what's so bad about the existing playground up the street from there on Boardman; my daughter seems to like it very much and it's a little safer getting there, for us anyway. I kind of worry about people (kids) crossing that really safe intersection to get to the new playground (that's sarcasm).
I think we are like-minded on the proposed Stop and Shop. I can make the long journey all the way to the one in Foxboro, or hit Roach Bros' or Shaw's (sarcasm again). I'm still holding out for a nice little pub or restaurant though. Maybe a "Cafe Assisi 2"! Now that would be cool!
    - PMM

  • 12/23 2:43pm   AB-G - I am not implying anything. As I stated, "it really seems like a bit of conflict of interest for a Planning Board member to be in with the developers, or did I miss something?" Maybe I really did miss something! I seem to recall reading in an earlier post that this was the case (of course I can't find it now!). If I am incorrect, I offer my sincere apology to the planning board members. If, however, this is the case, then as a concerned citizen with no legal background, it would appear to me that a planning board member should be recused from participating in any zoning law changes where he or she stood to directly benefit from those changes (financially or other).
Regarding your comments, I am not sure what you are getting at; "I'm not keen on this either, but it's not a choice" and "It's another form of wealth redistribution". First, I think it is a choice, otherwise we wouldn't be having a debate. Secondly, I'm not sure what you mean by wealth redistribution.
Again, I am clearly coming into this discussion late, so maybe I should refrain from commenting until I have all of the "facts". Without getting into the minutiae, I just don't like the idea of having in 50 homes on top of each other within a stone's throw of where I live, and then 50 more, and so on. I would have moved to Franklin or some other town if that was what I wanted.
P.S.: I hope you didn't take my comments to mean I don't want "the poor" living too close to me or something. For that matter, I don't even know if this is a so-called 40-B development, is that what it is? Either way; too many houses, too close.
    - PMM

  • 12/23 2:41pm   BF (2) - Yes, Gump's Farm was purchased as open space. The CPA has more goals than just open space such as Affordable Housing, Active and Passive recreation and Historical Preservation. The Town must use a percentage of the funds for each of these criteria. Gump's Farm provides us with land for four Affordable Houses (the farmhouse could not be brought up to code), Active recreation (playground), and Passive recreation (a very large parcel only partially seen from the road). I find this to be a very accessible, inclusive and clever use of the funds.

  • 12/17 9:49pm   I find it funny that people seem to push for change, then when it happens in their neighborhood, they're against it. You can't have it both ways. If you don't want the rich guy building, say 3, million dollar homes in your neighborhood on a large parcel, then they are going to take advantage of another progressive law and build 40 low income units on the same lot.
Gumps Farm is kind of another example. Open space my butt! Two houses so far and a very progessive playground with lots of pavement. Looks a lot better than Gumps old farm, doesn't it? What happened to the skateboard park? (sarcasm)
Keep voting those progressive agendas, people. It will eventually make it to your neighborhood when they run out of room in the center of town. I can't wait for the Stop & Shop to open (more sarcasm) t and the three story parking garage for all the commuters. (even more)

  • 12/15 9:30pm   PMM and Norfolk Residents interested in the ongoing development process of 106 & 108 Main Street,
Currently the developers have applications into the Planning Board and Conservation Commission for review of the property's development. The Dec. 11 2013 Con-Com meeting was continued to January 8, 2014 because of improper notification of abutters. There have been 2 Planning Board Meetings where the 50 home project was discussed under the current application for developing the properties, the first on November 7th and the second on December 3rd. The Planning Board meeting on the project has been continued until January 7th 2014. The developers were told at the last Planning Board Meeting that they can't really consider the 50 homes until the developers get a variance from the Zoning Board of Appeals on Norfolk Bylaw I.4.a.11 which only allows 16 bedrooms per lot. (Link to Latest copy of Norfolk Zoning Bylaws) If they are NOT allowed a variance from the ZBA for more than 16 Bedrooms, than that is the MAXIMUM they are allowed under current zoning.
Here is what Zoning Bylaw I.4.a.11 says:
Zoning bylaw I.4.a.11 is the bylaw that was repeatedly brought to Town Meeting on November 29, 2012 and May 8, 2013 for amendment to 32 bedrooms per lot. Both times the people of Norfolk strongly opposed the change.
Now it appears the fate of development in the downtown area will be in the hands of the Zoning Board of Appeals. Here is a link to this board: Norfolk ZBA. This board will have the power to change downtown Norfolk forever. Under their power they can allow special permission or a variance to allow development under zoning rule I.7.a.1. We hope the ZBA will vote against this variance. We want the ZBA to vote responsibly against this variance because the PEOPLE of Norfolk have said they don't want this type of density in Norfolk.
Here is what Zoning Bylaw I.7.a.1 says:
The 1 unit per 5000 sq. Ft. of land in bylaw I.7.a.1, if allowed by the ZBA and Planning Board would allow up to 44 dwelling units on 106 Main Street and 36 dwelling units on 108 Main Street. (80 total)
Much of the zoning to allow the above to happen has been strategically changed at Town Meeting over the last 2 years to support development as shown in this Norfolk Visioning Video June 2012. The only part of the zoning that didn't change was the 16 bedrooms per lot, which limits the developers to 8 dwelling units per lot at the 2-bedroom per unit maximum allowed. Yes we should have been at those meetings to oppose these changes. There were fewer than 100 votes at recent town meetings regarding many of the changes. Shame on us. But, one complaint we have regarding Town Meeting is that the tax paying residents of Norfolk no longer receive the Town Meeting Warrant in the mail. This needs to change back. We want this reminder in the mail.
So those in opposition of the development must attend the Board Meetings or at least send written comments to them expressing your concerns about this change. Remember that once one development is allowed, many more will follow changing our downtown character forever. Look at the changes in the Pondville section of Norfolk.
Please oppose this development in our Town.

  • 12/15 9:29pm   "Finally, it really seems like a bit of conflict of interest for a Planning Board member to be in with the developers"
PMM, could you be more specific, and what exactly are you implying? Look, I'm not keen on this either, but it's not a choice. It's another form of wealth redistribution, in a sense, really. The only place you could go would be a larger town where the low-income housing is sort of off to one side - you know - like a ghetto ( in the old Venetian sense of the word when they made the Jews all live together behind walls).

  • 12/12 9:33pm   Can someone fill me in on what's the latest on the Planning Board and the proposed zoning changes to build on Main Street? Living on 115 right outside the center, with a decent lot size, I can tell you now, my Wife and I will be soon looking to get out of town if this happens.
Growing up in Canton, I have seen this happen before. We have a young daughter, and a baby on the way, and I love to be able to walk the center, go to the Town Hall, or the Freeman Kennedy School for kid activities, not to mention just the look and feel of the center. Adding all those homes will completely detract from an otherwise nice little down-town area. Would I like to see a quaint little pub, sandwich shop or bakery open down-town? Absolutely! Would I like to see 50+ homes on top of each other right next to the center, with every house having at least two cars? Hell no!
Try driving or walking through downtown Canton these days. I am sure the developer is telling the town how these people will all miraculously work in Boston and take the train blah, blah, blah. Right! Don't do it Norfolk. You have something pretty special here. We don't need to turn into the abutting towns.
Also, as "BF" mentioned, if the zoning is changed, I can see how some of the "old-timers" in town will retire to the Cape or Florida and as their last act as Norfolkians sell to a developer who'll raze their house, and subdivide the lot. That would just be awesome!
Finally, it really seems like a bit of conflict of interest for a Planning Board member to be in with the developers, or did I miss something?

  • 12/8 6:29pm   In regard to the points made about the warrant articles sought to amend Norfolk Bylaw I.4.a.11 - to allow what appears to be ``cluster zoning''...
I watched the following video (at the 10 minute mark) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BY_eucgHP4M This video is of the Norfolk Planning Board's meeting dated 11/7/2013. Everyone who cares about our Towns unique charm should watch this video and really think about this.
    What everyone must understand is:
If this amendment is approved, every existing single-family residential parcel of land, vacant lots, buildings and others in this district may also be subject to the re-purposing of the lot that the present home or building sits on. If there is sufficient space and frontage in the existing parcel of land, the house or building may also be razed and the land then heavily built upon just like what is being proposed by the developers for the two parcels of land near Norfolk center (off of Main St). Medfield allows this form of development and the cluster style development near the Town center continues. It will not take very long for Norfolk to have the same, highly developed appearance as Medfield should the amendment to Norfolk's Bylaw I.4.a.11 be passed.
This project off of Main St would be just the start of major shift of appearance to the downtown areas of Norfolk if the Bylaw amendment is approved. What's next...?
Your home, along Main St., Route 115 or any of the side Streets in this area... if you have a large lot... that too will someday be subject to having a builder buy that home, tear it down and build several homes lined up just a handful of feet from each other on that very parcel of land! Is that the direction that the Majority of Norfolk residents want? Is that why you live here? To one day have a Town center so built up, it would take on the appearance of Medfield or Franklin centers? Not me... I am sorry to say. I am not one to say ``not in my backyard'' as I have been part of the building industry since 1978 and I have lived in this Town since 1984.
How about T parking for all these new homes, piled atop one another? I guess we will have to lay out another huge parcel of land in the Town center for that need as well in lieu of having true open space with tree's and so on.
I am against this change of Bylaw and will join the opposition for such. If you feel the same way, it is time to become part of this Towns planning by stepping up and voicing your opinions and then, get to all of the meetings for this proposal and vote! These builders and their lawyer's will not lie down. They will keep trying but, if they fail enough and the cost to keep trying becomes too great, then perhaps their greed and self-interests will subside and they can take their fight to another Town.
How nice is it to not have one traffic light in Norfolk center... If this bylaw is modified, there will be new traffic lights, believe me. Imagine the roundabouts with the 500 additional trips made, as mentioned by the developer of the two parcels of land off of Main St. That is just from two newly zoned parcels of land developed in cluster style. There must be at least a dozen other parcels of land that would be subject to this bylaw amendment.... Let's see... and average of 250 additional car trips per parcel x say... 10 parcels of land... that's roughly 2500 new car trips made through the center of Town each day! And water bans... what we already struggle with, to meet the present demand, that is nothing compared to the water crisis's to come... What shall the Town do then? Perhaps we can buy our water from Millis just as Franklin does/has due to their own over development.
Is this a good time for an old saying? You know, how it has always been unwise to ``put the cart before the horse''.
Anyways... Goodbye ``Mayberry'' I suppose... ``As times they are a change in'' (Bob Dylan)

  • 12/8 6:27pm   In reply to the two posts by PD...
Thank for such eye opening posts! All I can say is how thoughtful of our own elected planning board member who apparently is advocating on all of our behalf for such a zoning change. It would be so great to have piles of condos visible in our Town center... or maybe, triple deckers! How quaint! Would you please post the name of this planning board member who is also one of the builders pushing for this zoning by-law change. I would like to have this name memorized when he/she comes up for re-election for the planning board. Perhaps they will have won their way by then and would no longer find the need or benefit of holding such a seat to be in their own personal favor anymore.

  • 12/3 2:31pm   Residents of Norfolk.come to the public Planning Board Meeting tonight, Tuesday Dec 3, 2013 at the Town Hall. Scheduled tonight at 8:15pm at the Planning Board Meeting is the development of 106 & 108 Main Street. The developers are proposing 50 new homes in the downtown B-1 district. We would like the support of people in opposition of this high density development. This is 3 times the allowed number of homes in this district. You think it is difficult to get your coffee up town now? Do you want the Fire Department or an Ambulance to be able to safely respond to your 911 call? Do you NOT want your taxes to go up because of the impact this development will have on town services? Do like the Small Town character that the residents of Norfolk enjoy now? If so, please come to the meeting tonight and tell the Planning Board and the Developers that you do NOT want this development.

  • 12/3 2:26pm   Please post the following Letter for the residents of Norfolk and the attached letter. Thank You, NRFRD
To: Norfolk Residents December 1, 2013
From: Norfolk Residents for Responsible Development (NRFRD)
Re: The proposed development of 106 & 108 Main Street in Norfolk.

    Dear Resident,

Previously, at two Norfolk Town Meetings dated November 29, 2012 and May 8, 2013, warrant articles sought to amend Norfolk Bylaw I.4.a.11 (which only allows a residential density of 16 bedrooms per lot), to a density of 32 bedrooms per lot in the downtown business district. A Norfolk Cable video recording of each town meeting is available on youtube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SG3mubivg74 for the 11-29-12 meeting (article 10) with a start time of 1:08, and at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D79kN4Ve-n4 for the 5-8-13 meeting (article 12) with a start time of 1:10 of this video. Both times, the people of the Town of Norfolk voted against such an increase in density. The November 2012 vote was 47(nay)-36(yea) and the May 2013 vote was 51(nay)-25(yea), which is far below the 2/3rds majority needed to pass. We think it was irresponsible for the article to be presented at consecutive town meetings when the people of Norfolk had already expressed there position on the issue at the November 29, 2012 town meeting.

The people of Norfolk have twice made their opinions on the matter very clear at consecutive Town Meetings. The Planning Board was present at both Town Meetings and is fully aware that the people of Norfolk were against such high residential density. Now just a few months after the people of Norfolk rejected the second attempt to amend such high residential density in the downtown business district, there is application to the Planning Board by developers (1 who is on the planning board) for special permit for 50 dwellings with 100 bedrooms on the above addresses on Main Street. This is 3 times the allowed density. The Norfolk Cable youtube video for this planning board meeting for the special permit for this project was on 11-7-13 and is at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BY_eucgHP4M and starts at the 10 minute mark.

It is unreasonable to entertain the passage of a special permit for this development when it has been expressly stated that such a large residential development with a density this high on one lot is not welcome in our town. We think that the Planning Board has a responsibility first and foremost to the people of Norfolk and their wishes for development of its resources. We are adamantly against these applications for special permit and ask for your support by reviewing the enclosed letter, signing it and returning it the Norfolk Planning Board ASAP.

Sincerely, Norfolk Residents for Responsible Development (NRFRD)

  • 11/28 1:03pm   Norfolk Lions - Christmas Tree Sale
Norfolk Lions Club is in full swing with their annual Christmas Tree Sale!! This month long event is one of the Lions Club's most important fundraisers and a great opportunity for the Lions to connect with so many members of the community during the holiday period. Sales begin on Friday, November 29 and continue until all trees are gone, so we hope to see you down at the lot early for best selection.
As has been its tradition in the past five years, the Norfolk Lions Christmas Tree Sale is located on the lot next to the Dunkin Donuts on Main Street in downtown Norfolk. We thank the owners of our local Dunkin Donuts for their continued support of the Norfolk Lions.
Selling hours are weekdays from 3:00 PM to 9:00 PM and weekends from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM. The Lions will be happy to trim the bottom of your tree, wrap it and secure it to your car, although pickup trucks are very much appreciated. We accept cash and checks to the Norfolk Lions Club; sorry no credit cards.
Did you know that it takes 10 to 12 years of growing time and professional care to bring a Christmas tree to harvest? Our trees come from northern Maine and they are fresh and beautiful! We have both Balsam and Frazier Fir trees, as well as wreaths. We also have tree bags and tree life preservative to promote needle retention and help keep your tree fresh.
All of the proceeds from the sales of the trees go right back into the local Norfolk community and to various Lions charities. "Monies that the Lions generate go to seed such research as blindness prevention, diabetes prevention and numerous other causes", says Bruce Beans, this year's President and King Lion. "Norfolk Lions has donated over $250,000 in it's over 50 years of service to the community".
This year we will have a collection bin at the tree lot for Coats 4 Kids. We will be collecting coats for men, women and children to be given to families in need in our community. Any and all coats in good condition are needed and all will be dry-cleaned courtesy of Anton's Cleaners.
We will also be collecting non-perishable food donations for the benefit of the Norfolk Food Pantry. Like many of us, the food pantry has been hit hard during these economic times and we would like to help out. Bill Hawkins, co-chairman of the Christmas Tree Sale, further comments, "Your contributions to the Norfolk Food Pantry would be appreciated and could not come at a better time of year."
Again this year, the Boy Scouts of Norfolk will be offering a tree pick up service. For $10, the Scouts will pick up a tree at any house in Norfolk and bring it to the transfer station for recycling. You can register for this service at the lot when you buy your tree.
The Norfolk Lions Club currently has 82 men and women members and is growing! We meet on the fourth Tuesday of the month at 7:30 PM at the Lafayette House Restaurant on Rt. 1 in Foxboro, MA. For more information or to get involved with the Norfolk Lions Club, please visit www.NorfolkMALions.org, send email to norfolk lionsmembership@gmail.com or talk to any Lions member you may know.

  • 11/21 9:16pm   Norfolk Community League is hosting its 12th Annual Jingle Bell Run/Walk on Saturday, December 7, 2013. The Jingle Bell Run is a 5k loop that starts and ends at the H. Olive Day School in Norfolk, MA. It is a family-friendly event that attracts many runners and walkers from Norfolk and surrounding towns . ``It was wonderful to see the families from town, as well as the many who come to Norfolk just for this race,'' says Lisa Noke, NCL's President for the 2012 event. Last year's race attracted nearly 100 runners and walkers.
The proceeds of the Jingle Bell Run benefit The Santa Foundation. This organization is a non-profit that provides charitable assistance to local families in need during the holiday season and throughout the year. Robert Sullivan of the Santa Foundation said, ''The Jingle Bell Run is a significant part of the fundraising program of The Santa Foundation Inc. We use the funds to help families with gifts for the holidays and heating, electric and rental needs throughout the year.'' Last year, the Santa Foundation provided assistance to nearly Norfolk 70 families.
What started as a small town event has grown into a larger one, warranting it being professionally timed. "This year, we hired RaceWire to time the race. This enables the committee and volunteers to focus on creating a great experience for all," said Nan Hill, an NCL Run/Walk Co-Chair. Also new this year, participants can compete as a "Reindeer Team." It is a way for families and friends to run together and save on registration costs. People who would like register for the race, can do so at https://racewire.com/register.php?id=3464. For more information about this holiday-themed event, visit www.norfolkcommunityleague.org.

  • 11/21 9:10pm   MN... In regard to the CPA funds and the 3% property tax surcharge. It has been my understanding (and perhaps I am wrong) that those funds are meant to be used to purchase existing open space (land) in Norfolk for the future preservation of such. By that understanding, I have in the past, fully supported the idea, especially if the funds that we, as residents do contribute, are bolstered by some State funding as well, should we comply by the States guidelines.
What concerns me is what has been occurring to the ``open space'' that was acquired by the Towns purchase of ``Gump's Farm''. Why a seemingly fine farmhouse was razed and, put in its place, an ordinary looking Cape style home complete with vinyl siding and such. In addition, I ponder why other portions of this ``open space'' is also being altered for purpose other than the properties original state. Is that parcel truly being preserved as open space in doing such? Would other parcels acquired by the means of the CPA funds also be subject to such ``improvement''? My concerns are that they too will be subject for the re-purposing of open space.
I do understand the financial dynamics of the benefit of developing some or all of the acquired open space as the revenue generated may indeed exceed the original purchase price, thus generating additional funds for the continuation of acquiring more open space but where does it end? Please guide me on this, as I am sure I am missing many facts of the matter... Why approximately 15 acres of open space at Gump's Farm shall be reduced to just a small portion of true open space once the final phases of the re-purposing of that land is complete.
Is that parcel of land a model for the taxpayers of this Town to think about? If it is, then I am not in favor of any further funding of the CPA by means of any future property tax surcharges even if we/Norfolk residents loose the States additional funding of such. Why should I/we (Norfolk property tax payers) support the purchase of open space only to have the land developed and altered hence changing the original benefit of acquiring and preserving actual open space? If re-purposing of open space is to be, shouldn't the modifications reflect a benefit to the greater majority of Norfolk residents? I will not benefit from a new playground or community garden and I feel a majority of Norfolk residents would fall into the same way of thinking... that they too will not benefit from such. We all do benefit by the keeping of actual open space in its original state (for the most part). The character of Norfolk as being a rural town is maintained by having more trees and open fields than to have more asphalt and modern homes placed upon such. Preserving true open space does benefit a greater majority of residents by far. Why can't a new playground be installed in the new school areas for example? There is so much room and parking there already, as playgrounds do not take up a lot of space.
Millis has a lot of true open space and part of which is Oak Grove Farm off of Route 115. The town maintains that beautiful classic farmhouse, has one soccer field and the balance of the land is in it's original state and used as walking trails and such. That is my idea of open space preservation... but... just my idea I suppose.

  • 11/18 12:36am   Cpc state grants to towns: Dear former cpc participant:
The Massachusetts Department of Revenue (DOR) has released the Community Preservation Trust Fund distribution amounts for each CPA municipality. In accordance with Section 10 of the CPA legislation, DOR annually distributes monies from the fund to cities and towns that have adopted CPA.
All CPA communities will receive a 52.23% match on round one of the trust fund distribution this year. This represents a two-fold increase from last year's 26.83% first round match, largely due to the additional $25 million that was deposited in the CPA trust fund from the state's FY13 budget surplus. Communities that adopted CPA with a full 3% local property tax surcharge will receive additional revenue on rounds two and three.
The Coalition was pleased to lead the six-year legislative effort to obtain the additional funding for CPA, and we're grateful to all the CPA advocates who helped along the way. The $25 million in surplus funds will need to be renewed for next year, so we'll need your help again beginning in January. (per Stuart Sanguir cpa cialition)

  • 11/18 12:35am   Dear NCTV Memebers: Calling all musicians, and artisans!! Bring your craft to the attention of the town through NCTV!
I would love to meet with any and all members of the community who have a special craft for a monthly show demonstrating your skills. Artists, musicians, landscape architects, carpenters, chefs, masons etc.
NCTV programming is not just produced in studio. We accept any and all outside produced shows from Norfolk residents to air on our local channel. As members of NCTV you have the option of producing your shows at home and delivering a completed program. We do not require that you use our equipment to air programming on our Public channel. We are always here to help troubleshoot if you have recently purchased a camera or computer editing software. I would like all Norfolk residents to think of NCTV not as just a television studio where you produce your own programming, but as a community center where simple discussions and meetings are always welcome. If you would like to discuss music or art of any kind, please feel free to use our facility to meet and maybe get the bug to make a show. Our ultimate goal is programming, but we all know some brainstorming needs to happen first. Please stop by our Main Street studio to get a sample of what we do here. Thank you, and have a great weekend,

Are they noticeably hotter to the touch when taking them out? Mold or mildew smell around dryer? Or has it just not been cleaned for a long time or ever?
I will come clean your dryer vent(s) for $60 ($35 for seniors or veterans). It is estimated there are approximately 16000 house fires in the US annually because of clogged dryer vents, so please, even if you don't have me do it for you, have someone do it annually to protect your home and family and have a more efficient dryer in the process. Studies show dirty dryer vents could cost as much as $300/year in added utility costs. Please call Craig @ 508-530-2453 or 508-520-1459 to set up a time convenient for you.

  • 11/13 9:22pm   Last Saturday we held a reception at Zebra's restaurant which was catered by their associated catering company Perfect Pear. They were wonderful to deal with. Judy helped us to plan a menu, organize the event and arrange for food for family coming back to our house to visit afterwards. Prices were in line with what we were quoted elsewhere. The food was fantastic. We highly recommend them

  • 11/13 9:19pm   I live in Norfolk and I just had my two golden retrievers groomed and I highly recommend this company. The Green Groomer Mobile Pet Spa. Nancy Dreier is the owner and she was excellent. She only uses organic grooming products, and she comes right to your home and grooms the dogs in her van. Our dogs loved it and it was so much easier than having to drive the dogs to a groomer. She can be reached at 508-493-4342.

  • 11/2 6:14pm   WC: Did your pipes rattle before the new washer? If not, then you just need to install air expansion things to absorb the water hammer of the washer solenoid slapping the water on/off suddenly as the washer runs. Install one on each feed (both hot and cold) at the washer feed. They are about 3-6" and sort of roundish. They are like balloons inside with some trapped air that absorbs the sudden pressure changes. If the pipes rattled before, then you need to add straps to the pipes wherever possible to secure them. definitely in the basement. but if the pipes are loose inside the walls, you'll either have to live with it or open up the walls and add strapping. Last resort: You might add expansion tanks in the basement utility room (these are larger and more expensive, but might solve the problem too).

  • 11/2 6:07pm   I am considering painting a ceiling myself. The room is no more than 12 x 12. Does anyone have a recommendation on how to clean it?. It is textured, so I am thinking I should brush or vacuum it with a brush attachment. It has never been painted, so I wonder if a primer is necessary. I don't want the coverage to be thick or I will lose the texture.
Lastly, I know there are some handymen who post here. About how much to paint a ceiling this dimension? Thanks,

  • 10/22 5:01pm   Can anyone suggest someone local who might be able to help me apply some face paint as part of a Halloween costume? I have the two paints, white clown paint and some basic black, as well as a YouTube video of how to apply it as part of my costume. I just don't have the brushes or any of the other tools that may be needed, nor do I have the confidence to try it myself. Should be simple for someone who knows what they're doing.
The party is Friday, October 25, 2013, so I can go to someone's house any time after 6:00 PM on that day to get it done. Email me at dmason64@hotmail.com and we can make arrangements. Would be willing to pay a small fee for these services. Thanks.

  • 10/11 6:26pm   I know a while ago, there were comments about how rude and abrupt they are at Nick's. Today I ordered pizza and salad for a party to be held right in one of the neighboring shops. Kathy, the blonde, acted like she was doing me a favor, Now, I don't know what's going on in her life, to be fair, but I don't think it's too much to expect some small sign of friendliness in a shop. I ordered a pan of garden salad, and as it was the equivalent of 10 individual salads, she wanted $50. I asked about the price for 8, since that's how they do it, and she wanted $45 instead of $40. I will never go in there again. In addition an older man was yelling at her. Nick himself?

  • 10/11 6:23pm   I would like to add to the information posted by Betsy Pyne regarding the significance of the Historic District at Sullivan's Corner. While it is currently called Sullivan's Corner, its historic significance runs much deeper than the late 19th and 20th Centuries.
The cemetery can be traced back to 1745 when Wrentham established Cemetery # 7 in North Wrentham. Here if you walk through the old section you will find the graves of the men and women and their children who settled in North Wrentham in the 18th Century.
27 Seekonk Street, currently the home of Mrs. [W.], was originally the home of Asa Ware, the step brother of Josiah Ware of the Tavern. The land for his farm was provided by Elisha Ware of the Warelands who was Asa's father-in-law since he married Phebe, Elisha's youngest daughter.
Asa and his brother Joseph, both veterans of the Revolutionary War, farmed the land, and after them Asa's son, also Asa , carried on until just before Norfolk became a town. Asa fought with George Washington's forces in the siege of Boston and after the British evacuated Boston went south to New York. He lost his hand in the Battle of Monmouth. Joseph also took part in Lexington and Concord and then joined Benedict Arnold's Expedition up the Kennebec River to launch an attack against the British in the summer of 1775.
It was the Ware farm and home that the Sullivans purchased just before the turn of the 20th Century.

  • 10/11 6:20pm   BW: Do you happen to know: Are those going to be Tufts doctors ( from NE Medical Center) or Norwood Hospital?
    - AB-G

  • 10/7 9:48pm   The Medical Center which will be at 31 Pine St. (Rte. 115) will include offices of thirteen physicians and an Urgent Care Clinic. It will be called Pine Street Medical and will be home to ``Pondville Medical Associates'' and ``Tufts Medical Center''. It has absolutely nothing to do with medical marijuana. IF medical marijuana were to come to Norfolk, after a long, open-meeting process, a facility would be located in the C-1 District, section ``c'' which is not anywhere near Pine Street Medical. A standing sign at the corner of Valley St. and Pine St. shows a beautiful picture of a beautiful building and grounds (located in section ``d'' by the way), which will make Pondville and Norfolk proud. Pondville-ites welcome the Pondville Medical Associates. Medical marijuana at Pine Street Medical: no worries!

  • 10/7 9:46pm   The new National Register District at the Norfolk Cemetery and Sullivan's Corner is Norfolk's first National Register District. It was designated by the Massachusetts Historical Commission and the Department of the Interior in Washington,D.C. We have individual National Register sites listed but this is the first district. If you are interested in learning about the 5 houses included in the district and about the Cemetery the application is avbailable at the Library. In it the significance and history of this gateway intersection are explained in detail. The Sullivans owned and operated the little store that once occupied the house with the diagonal door on the corner where we have the sign. The little cape on the corner, originally owned by the Blakes, is the oldest house in the district. The neighborhood is still home to third and forth generations of the Sullivan Family. Of Course the cemetery is historic also, dating back to the mid 18th century. Details about the cemetery are also part of the National Register Application at the Library. Oh and another detail, The Massachusetts Historical Commission suggested we designate this corner, the cemetery and the five houses associated with the Sullivan Family as an appropriate site to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

  • 10/4 6:27pm   So now there's an historical district near the intersection of Main and Seekonk? The only house that is truly old and unmodernized is the little house filled with and surrounded by trash across from the cemetery, on Main. The house where the sign is posted is covered with vinyl. How is that an historical building?

  • 10/4 6:16pm   One of the reasons I love living in Norfolk is that we are a nice community. We are good neighbors to each other. The Pizza guy knows my children by name.
One thing I don't like about Norfolk is the way some people drive. People are ruthless when going through our 2 roundabouts at breakneck speeds, some people don't stop don't stop and allow other motorists to enter a street from a driveway. I realize that this happens everywhere, but Norfolk is a sleepy little town. Yesterday while playing street hockey in the driveway with my children, our ball rolled down the driveway and into the street. Not one person driving by slowed down or stopped. After I retrieved the ball and tried to get back into the driveway 3 other cars zoomed past me without so much as a glare as I stood in the road attempting to cross. Really people, are we in that much of a rush these days? What ever happened to "Behind a bouncing ball comes a running child"? I really like the signs around town that say, "Drive like your child lives here".
    Slow down folks!

  • 10/4 6:13pm   JH, When you moved to Norfolk you must have done your homework and known it was a tri county junior and senior high school system. My taxes are already close to $6000/yr. I'd be hard pressed to vote to add any more to my tax bill to build 2 additional schools, especially since we just built a new elementary school last year. Not to mention the public safety building that needs to be replaced and will probably be coming up at town meeting anytime now. And now I also have to sign up for the new healthcare tax. Sorry but, I am already taxed to the max.
