    The Norfolk Lions and Norfolk Community League announce the Last Chance Ticket Sale for the 14th Annual Haunted Train Ride and Spooky Maze. There are approximately 300 tickets left to be sold. The sale will be Weds. October 1 at the lobby of the Norfolk Library. The sale starts at 6pm. Tickets will be sold on a first come, first served basis. Don't miss out!
    Tickets are $6 each and nonrefundable. The 14th Annual Haunted Train Ride and Spooky Maze takes place on Saturday, Oct. 18 from 5:00-8:30 pm at the Holmes Fields in Norfolk. No tickets will be available at the event and you must present a ticket to enter the parking lot. Proceeds from the Haunted Train Ride will go to worthy Norfolk causes such as Norfolk Recreation, Norfolk Public Schools, Norfolk Together and Santa Foundation.   • 9/27 5:05pm   The last 3 nights [last week] starting around 8pm (until some time in the iddle of the night) there has been a steady stream of 10 wheel dump trucks flying (where the speed limit is only 35 mph) down Rt 115 towards the center. Does anyone know what is going on and where these trucks are going???

  • 9/25 10:56pm   KMK cleaners, seriously? I have been in your "shop" 4 times in the last 5 weeks only to be disappointed by your poor performance. First time, I received no call back from the "manager" about how long an alteration would take. Ok, bad business, but no big deal. 2nd time, my shirts which were supposed to be done in 24 hours took 3 days, annoying but ok, whatever. Third time, I ask for an alteration and a clean. I get an alteration only, no clean. Getting kinda annoyed.
    Ahh and the final straw. I come to pick up my pants tonight, and they can't be located.
    Just a thought, but you guys might want to think about having someone working in the "shop" whose age doesn't end in "teen".

Admittance is free and Norfolk's very own Moderator and Council on Aging Chairman, Jay Talerman, will be donning an auctioneer's hat for the occasion as he describes a variety of interesting items submitted for bids. Articles to be auctioned (may be antiques but are not restricted to timeworn items) will include attic treasures and basement finds, knick-knacks, collectibles, memorabilia, nostalgia, signed and unsigned sports and entertainment items, as well as the strange, the artistic, and the not-so-artistic. Due to the generous support of the Friends of the Norfolk Council on Aging, complimentary soft drinks, wine, appetizers, and a variety of snacks and refreshments will also be available to add to the evening's fun and camaraderie.
    Attention All Submitters: To submit an item for the auction, participants must sign-up at the front desk of the Senior Center on or before September 30th. Bidders, observers, or guests do not have to register. Come one, come all! All proceeds will revert to the owners of the submitted items and submissions should include a brief description of the item or items for bid, must be accompanied by the owners on the night of the event, are limited to two items, and they must be removed promptly if unsold. No heavy items or heavy furniture. The rule of thumb is that if you can carry it in, it is eligible. If you have a question regarding your submission, please call (508) 528-4430. Submitters are encouraged to register early as there will be space limitations restricting the total number of submissions permitted for the event.
    Do you have a friend, neighbor, or relative residing in Norfolk who has yet to visit the Senior Center? This event can also provide an ideal introduction to Norfolk's beautiful Senior Center, its staff, its volunteers, and the many services available to the community.

  • 9/14 10:22pm   The Norfolk Department of Public Works has installed the second historic information panel in the park by the Mill Pond on Main Street in City Mills. Designed by members of the Norfolk Historical Commission, the layout and digital master was completed by students at the Tri-County RVT High School and the fiber glass panel and stand fabricated by Pannier of Pennsylvania. This is the second of five panels in the series being funded by Community Preservation Funds. The first panel was completed and installed on Town Hill last summer on the site of the First Meeting House and traces the History of Town Hill and the area around it.
    The City Mills panel traces the history of this western section of Norfolk which was annexed from Franklin when Norfolk was incorporated in1870 and made up almost one fifth of the new town. Two other panels have been completed and will be installed soon. The first, Highland Lake Grove Park will be located on Fales Park Road which was the access road from Main Street to Highland Lake and tells the story of the Railroad Excursion Park that operated on the Lake from 1875 - 1900. The third will be sited at 24 Campbell Street at the entry to Fales Memorial Park Preserve and is titled : Settlement a Stop River Falls. The fifth panel is scheduled to start the process of digitalizing the layout at Tri-County shortly and should be ready for installation early in 2015. This one will depict the History of Pondville and will be located at on the green at the intersection of Valley Street and Old Pond Road.

The event will take place on Saturday September 27th from 10am to 2pm in the Franklin Village Shopping Plaza parking lot. To participate please bring any unwanted electronic devices including computers, laptops, printers etc, and a canned good for each item to be recycled.   • 9/14 9:55pm   The Preamble to the U.S. constitution is "We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America."
    Lincoln's Gettysburg Address closes with "... that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth."
    Many people feel that "we the people" have lost control of our government - that the policies and practices of our government are set by, and are for the benefit of, large organizations (domestic, foreign, and multinational) - not the citizens of the United States. This concern is shared by people across the political spectrum - Tea Party people, conservative Republicans, conservative Democrats, moderate Republicans, moderate Democrats, liberal Republicans, liberal Democrats, Libertarians, Liberals, etc.
    There is a non-partisan effort to wrest control of the government from the large organizations and return it to the citizens, as the founders intended. There are several different groups committed to this effort.
    The author Jeffrey Clements is on a book tour for the new edition of his book "Corporations Are Not People". His last stop in Massachusetts is at the new Franklin High School at 218 Oak Street in Franklin, MA on Monday, 22-Sep-2014 at 7:30 PM. All are welcome at this free forum. The format will be a talk by Jeff Clements followed by a public question and answer session. In his presentation, Clements will offer both a bipartisan and non-partisan argument that "individuals need to join the historic work to overcome partisan divides and re-engage in self-government by all Americans - community by community, state by state, and ultimately, in Washington itself." Clements will discuss the types of actions that "ordinary citizens" can take.
    If you are concerned that "we the people" are not being well served by our government and our voices have little influence in comparison with the voices of large organizations, consider coming to hear Jeff talk about the problem and how we might approach solving it.

    Does anyone know where to buy K1 Kerosene? I just got a kerosene heater for my outdoor garage to take the edge off while working out there during the winter. The instructions caution to only use K1 grade (clear) kerosene, not the "red-dye" kerosene. Apparently, most fuel oil suppliers sell the red-dye type, indicating that it is not taxed for transportation use. From what I have been reading on the net, the red-dye kerosene smells and leaves deposits in the heater. Any assist?

Once we've decided on the story, we can make it available so the artists can choose what to draw. We will then incorporate the illustrations into the show.     From April to September of 2013, Wendy Johnston backpacked the entire 2,700 mile long Pacific Crest Trail from the US/Mexican Border to the US/Canadian border through California, Oregon, and Washington. Join Wendy for a talk focusing on the lessons that she learned on her 5-month journey, followed by a visual representation of her journey through photos taken along her hike. It is Wendy's hope that you will leave inspired and encouraged to follow your own dreams!

    The Norfolk Lions are pleased to announce that the 2nd annual Young Performers Variety Show will be held on Sunday, November 9 at 6:00 PM at the King Philip Middle School in Norfolk. This show is open to performers ages 8 to 18, from Norfolk and surrounding towns. First, second and third prizes of $200, $100 and $50 will be awarded at the end of the show.
    Auditions will be held on Sunday October 19 & 26 at 4:00 PM, and Thursday October 23 at 6:00 PM at the Norfolk Public Library. Acts can be no longer than 5 minutes and no accompaniment will be provided, so auditioners must bring their own music (iPod, CD, etc.). I am also not pleased about having to spend two years replacing the brick that was previously installed in the round-abouts and crosswalks in the downtown area. However, the contractor did not choose the product that they installed. The bricks were made of concrete and were eaten by road salt. Some combination of the Town and State (I believe there was State funding for part of this project) approved the bricks and it falls on them as the Owner to pay for repairs. There is only one town near us that spent the extra money up front for granite. Everyone else has replaced what they did or dealt with the deterioration. Like it or not, we're on the hook.

    In 1951 it was on Main Street and the entrance was through the Old School House.
    In 1985 the entrance was moved to the new expansion on North Street on the back side of Town Hill.
    Today we enter the library parking lot from Liberty Lane with the entrance facing Liberty Lane.
    The current address is still listed as Main Street.
    How can you explain this ?

    Come join us a for a Haunted Train ride through the woods and a trip through the Spooky Maze. Costumes are encouraged as well as canned goods for donation to the Norfolk Food Pantry. The Haunted Train ride is geared to kids from Kindergarten through Middle School. As the evening gets darker, the ride gets scarier! There will also be food, music and fun to keep you entertained in line!
    This popular event requires a ticket. $6 per ticket with the proceeds going to worthy Norfolk causes through distributions from NCL and Norfolk Lions.
    Tickets Sale will be Tuesday, September 16- Thursday, September 18th from 3-7 at the Norfolk Public Library. There are a limited number of tickets available and they will be sold on a first come, first serve basis. No tickets will be sold at the event. You must have a ticket to enter the parking lot.

    While the calendar will soon say September, for a few hours next month it will feel like March 17. The first Halfway to St. Paddy's Day Bash will be held at Lake Pearl Luciano's to support the Massachusetts Chapter of The Cure Stars Now. The fundraising event, to benefit efforts to find a cure for brain stem tumor (DIPG), will provide a complimentary beer and wine happy hour from 7-8 p.m., followed by an Irish-themed buffet dinner and dessert. There will be live music by the local group, Band MLC, and an Irish step dance presentation, along with an impressive silent auction.
    The driving forces behind the event are John and Lisa Mackintosh whose 9-year-old daughter Nicole died from DIPG in 2011. DIPG is also the same cancer that affects Danny Nickerson, the young boy from Foxboro who received hundreds of thousands of birthday cards. ``Because there is little industry investment in childhood cancers,'' explains John Mackintosh, ``most do not garner the media attention that Danny has. Many children have died from DIPG in our area. The disease typically strikes children in the 5-10 year age group. It's the worst disease I've encountered. There has been VERY little investment in understanding the disease so the news to parents at diagnosis is the same today as it was 30 or 40 years ago. No cure. No known cause. This is simply unacceptable and this is why we are committed to funding research that will make a difference for children in the future.''
    All proceeds benefit The Cure Starts Now Foundation to fund vital pediatric cancer research in honor of Nicole. It is in her memory that her parents continue to raise money to help other children who face a similar battle. ``With over $2 million in research already funded through The Cure Starts Now, we hope this event will allow us to take one more step towards the cure,'' Mackintosh says.

Wouldn't it be great to get a head start on the writing before sports practices and science homework start to fill your calendar? If so, consider signing up for this workshop taught by Gwynne Sawtelle, a Norfolk resident and high school English teacher heading into her 20th year. The class meets for three 90 minute sessions, and you'll have access to the teacher via email in between. The first will involve looking at sample essays and questions, brainstorming, and outline writing. During the second we'll edit and revise.     This class may be just what a busy person needs! It is being offered early in the day (perhaps before work or getting kids off to school) and runs for just 30 minutes.
    This class incorporates short bursts of exercise using frequent repetitions, followed by another burst of exercise targeting a different muscle group.

    Corn season brings up something I've been noticing over the past 10-15 yrs - the peeling back of husks and full de-husking of ears right at the market or farm. Growing up, we would never have done this. It was common knowledge that corn stays fresher in husks. And it was rude to peel n' throw back. Like the kid asking for the big pizza slice, leaving the smaller slice for his pal. Really?
    When, and how, did this shucking trend start? Roachies and Shaw's provide "husk buckets." Or they pre-shuck and shrink wrap. I don't understand it at all. The customer is paying for an inferior product by not buying the whole product which is sold by piece, not by pound.

    Now, take sweet corn for instance. The endosperm is mostly made up of sugar. But when the ear is picked, the ear senses that something is seriously wrong and it deploys this enzyme which starts rapidly converting the sugar to a more easily metabolized starch.

    How fast does this happen? Well, let me put it this way. I know corn connoisseurs out there who actually put a pot of water on to boil before they go down to their market for their corn. In other words, once a again we're facing one of these. ... a culinary time bomb that is.

    You can also buy yourself some time by only choosing really fresh corn. When you pick up an ear take a really good look at it. Is it plump? Is the husk bright and moist? Is the cut end bright and moist? Shouldn't be any dark splotches there. And look at the tassel, important things, tassels. Should be slightly sticky and brown not matted and black. A black tassel signifies a mature ear and that means more starch than sugar.

    Store sweet corn in the refrigerator. Its sugar and vitamin C content will diminish in warm temperatures, diminishing both flavor and nutritional value. Keep the husk attached during storage as it helps corn retain its moisture content. If the husk has been removed, the refrigerated fresh corn should be loosely wrapped or put in a lightly perforated plastic bag so that air can circulate around it. That will prevent Clostridium botulinim from growing and producing botulism toxin.

    Any thoughts on the development of this de-husk trend? The client is ensuring themselves an inferior product.

    Occasionally I point out that our DPW is very good. Lately they seem everywhere: Park St. got repaired, Miller patched. Sightlines project at corner on Myrtle is underway. They did Leland inc new lines and they brush-hogged the first 6ft of roadside slop. It is noticed. We walk alot too and although we dont walk by Main & Canterberry, its nice to see sidewalk connections. Paying higher taxes isnt much fun but these touches make me happy. P.s. We need some more sports fields: Pond St. is always too busy, needs at least some rest/alt fields.

  • 7/21 12:09pm   I live close to the Freeman Kennedy School and enjoy the opportunity to walk the grounds with my dog. He is always on his leash and we are very diligent about cleaning up after him. This past Friday evening my dog was viciously attacked by another dog who was not on a leash. While my son and his friend were fending this dog off, the female owner ran at them screaming that her dog was not a "friendly" dog. She then proceeded to grab her dog, jump in her car, and leave without ever checking on the condition of my dog.
    My dog has had two vet visits as a result of this attack and thankfully he is OK and will not need surgery.
    If your dog is not friendly, keep it at home and away other dogs and people. And certainly don't come back to the Freeman because I'm looking for you!

  • 7/5 6:28pm   AB ~ I thought I was the king conservative (but really moderate) curmudgeon !! You make me look like an amateur.
    I agree the roads are awful but is it only ``young and rich'' people driving nice cars that bother you? I say this only because you did not mention Ford Focus's, Honda Accords, etc. Did you ever think maybe you had maybe crossed the center line?
    I kind of agree about the landscapers but it bothers me more when they prune my neighbors shrubs for 2 weekdays with gas powered trimmers on my weekday off.
    The round-a-bouts. I have given up because most people do not have a clue about traffic rules. In too much of a hurry and on the phone. I prefer to remember my driver education instructor always telling us to look out for the other guy. Good advice. Has worked for 46 years. I never go into the round-about with my eyes not wide open. Are the cars that bother you also Audi's and Land Rover's? However, on the serious side, if we put a part time police officer, yes, on a detail, at both round-a-bouts writing tickets we could pay the officer and have $$ to fix the roads !!
    Have no problem with dogs. My neighbors all walk around the neighborhood with bags of doggie poop! Does anyone else think pets are in charge !!!
    Pond Street ~ Sounds to me that the Rec. Dept. should monitor this and call the highway garage and provide more trash barrels and more frequent pickups. Would you rather people throw it out their car window on the way home?
    Finally ~ the new Kids Place playground. Did it ever occur to you, since RI is a 15 minute ride from here, that grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, friends , etc. could be visiting or watching childen in Norfolk? I would only be upset about this if I saw RI plates at the dump. Oh. Pardon me. The Transfer / Recycling Station.
    One curmudgeon to another. Lighten up and go with the flow. There are bigger battles to fight.

  • 7/5 6:11pm   BF: Getting together to discuss it won't do a thing. I have a noise issue from a business on my end of Seekonk, that is ridulous. I have held off going officially to Bob Bullock (I spoke to him informally, already) because it has been quieter over there. I don't know if he went and spoke to them or not. I was supposed to get back to him and I personally don't want to play this card until I need to. However, if you want to get a group together (I'm in to support you), and go to Bob Bullock, in town hall, that is your only recourse, in my opinion, IF the noise is coming from businesses.. I can tell you if someone is working on their residential property, or has workmen doing something, then the 7-7 Mon-Sat will apply. At least check this yourself with the police to see if my information is correct, though I am pretty sure it is. Get my email from Andras if you wish. I totally agree: We didn't sign up for this by moving to Norfolk.

  • 7/5 6:10pm   Well, AB, let your complaint flag fly... I couldn't agree more (perhaps we are kindred spirits)... just be braced for anger and indignation from the loyalists. You HAVE to tell your story to Town Hall to possibly GET RESULTS re the sightlines, the roads and the hanging bushes. I don't understand why people think posting here will do them any good re town-management issues, though all are free to do so, of course. Trimming the bushes SURELY cannot be too expensive to do. I've also been meaning to say something about the bush by the corner house @ Seekonk and Main, but I wonder if that bush is on private property. (I don't see HOW a house can be historic covered with vinyl, but let that go. The truly old house is the one diagonally across the street with the [...] assortment of refuse in the yard.) There's also the matter of the flowering trees near the cemetery sign, but they will soon lose their flowers and you can mostly see through them. However, I have a tall vehicle.

  • 7/5 6:09pm   AB, Your concerns are pretty serious. You should consider a citizens arrest of those out-of-staters using our new playground. These immigration issues are just so complex, would we have to arrest the children too and deport them back to RI? Perhaps the police could do a strip search of all those driving cars with out of state plates as they cross our Norfolk borders. I have to go see my dad in RI this afternoon and I am ready for anything. You keep worrying so we don't have to!
