  • 6/28 6:26pm   CL: Contact Bob Bullock in town hall and tell him your story. They are running a business ovedr there, if I'm not mistaken. I have had to cope with a sawmill - that's right- in the Seekonk area, which produces small mountains of firewood on a regular basis with trucks coming and going. Firing guns to train horses? Sounds barbaric. No, we did not sign up for this level of noise. Ordinary, household power equipment may run from 7 AM to 7 PM, excluding Sundays. Good luck,
    - AB-G

  • 6/28 6:20pm   Ok here are my complaints.
The roads in Norfolk ~ While there has been some limited patching of the winter pot holes, the small patches come up with the first rain storm and the holes are worse than before.
During the course of the day I travel the roads from the Noon Hill Area over toward Wrentham. The wet weather we had in the spring caused a lot of growth on the overhanging trees. I have scratches down my passenger side from pulling over as far as I can to avoid someone in an Audi or Lexus or Range Rover or a red Chrysler Mini Van who can't slow down and can't stay in their lane so their car doesn't get scratched. To the guy in the gray Lexus with the last two characters in the license plate of MT, you don't own the road.
Dog walkers ~ I own a dog, and yes we walk on the sidewalks and the correct side of the road. We also pick up after our dog, we carry plastic bags. Please do the same.
Landscaping Companies ~ There are a few local companies from Walpole, Attleboro, Medfield, Norfolk and Franklin that seem to think it is OK to park on a blind corner, don't pull over to the side of the road, leave their equipment behind their trailer that creates a road hazard. It is even worse when my fellow Norfolkians think it is OK to come into oncoming traffic when their lane is blocked and this is done without slowing or looking for oncoming traffic. I know they are from Norfolk cause I'm stopped and can clearly see their transfer station sticker on their vehicle window.
The intersection of Seekonk and Main. When the wall was rebuilt on the cemetery a few years ago, the line of sight toward the prison was reduced - my Honda sits too low to see over the wall. With the landscaping that was done the view is now even more limited. To the right the bushes in front of the house and the newly planted Sullivan's Corner Historical Sign has also reduced the line of sight to the right. In all seriousness, you need to be over the cross walk in the Main Street travel lane to be able to see if traffic is coming from the right. The sign needs to be moved and the shrubs need to be pruned. The Town spends thousands to take land by eminent domain on Miller Street when some signage could have done the job and at this intersection the Town projects have made things worse.
The roundabouts ~ I don't understand why we can't get signs posted that says ``Traffic in Roundabout has the Right of Way.'' Instead we have some sort of cryptic stick figure and a yield sign. And there are still drivers of Town vehicles that don't get this. Some of you are thinking that I'm going to fast to read a sign like that. It's 15 mph entering the roundabout!
Why do people that use the Pond Street fields feel it is OK to leave their trash behind next to the over flowing barrels?
I drove by the new playground on the corner of Boardman and Rockwood. I noticed two cars with Rhode Island plates.....
Other streets that I have been on that require pruning ~ North Street, Union Street, Park Street, Tucker Road, King Street and Holbrook.

  • 6/28 6:16pm   I received my Norfolk Real Estate tax bill for FY 2015 Q1 & Q2. It showed that $1,417.19 was due each quarter. After logging in to the Unipay site at https://unipaygold.unibank.com/Default.aspx?customerid=435 I selected "Tax Collector -> 2015 Real Estate Q1" and entered my bill number and the Fiscal year (2015). I saw that $1,417.19 was due. Since I was logged in, I could schedule that payment for the day it is due (1-Aug-2014).
Note: If at all possible, avoid paying through this site with a credit card. If I had paid this bill through the Unipay online system with a credit card, they would have charged an additional $40.00 fee to my credit card. (The fee would be larger for larger payments.) If you pay by ACH (Automated Clearing House, essentially an electronic funds transfer out of your bank account), they will deduct an additional $0.25 fee from your bank account. You don't have to use the Unipay online system at all - you can just pay by check.
After scheduling payment of the Q1 bill, I went back and selected "Tax Collector -> 2015 Real Estate Q2" and entered my bill number and the Fiscal year (2015). It showed me that $2,885.48 was due, even though the paper bill showed that the quarterly payment should be $1,417.19. (See below for a description of where the "$2,885.48" came from.) I knew that the amount I wanted to pay for the second quarter is $1,417.19, so I ignored the $2,885.48 and typed $1,417.19 into the "Pay Amount" text entry field and scheduled that payment for the day it is due (3-Nov-2014).
Explanation of why the system showed $2,885.48 due for 2015 Real Estate Q2: The system doesn't know that the Q1 payment will be made on time. The system assumes that no Q1 payment will be made and that I'll be making both the Q1 and Q2 payments when the Q2 payment is due. There are 94 days between when the Q1 payment is due (1-Aug-2014) and when the Q2 payment is due (3-Nov-2014). A late fee is charged at a rate of 14% per year. 94/365 * 14% * $1,417.19 = $51.10. So the payment shown is the total of $1,417.19 (due for Q1) + $51.10 (late fee on the assumption that I'm making the Q1 payment when the Q2 payment is due, that is 94 days late) + $1,417.19 (due for Q2) = $2,885.48.

  • 6/28 6:14pm   CL we too are tired of what's been happening in our neighborhood. We're on Cleveland St and on one side of us they built a farm with pigs and their smells and the other we have gunshots and building noises going on all weekend. I don't know what to do either but perhaps we all need to get together and discuss it. The moderator can give you my name and e-mail address

  • 6/28 5:20pm   About a week and a half ago a snapping turtle was crossing route 115 in front of Rocco Plaza, headed for the Stop River on the Four Kicks side. I pulled over to stop the obvious from happening. Immediately, and I stress immediately, 2 men pulled over to help avert the traffic. We discussed what to do while cars and trucks proceeded slowly around the big turtle. We knew that this animal had to clamp onto a strong stick rather than our fingers so we called my husband to come and help (not with his fingers but with a broom handle). BUT a third man pulled over and stated the obvious. He said, "I'll move him for you. I do this all the time." Obviously, this fellow did know what he was doing. He grabbed the turtle by the tail, carried him in the direction he had been headed, and put him safely into the Stop River. This man was indeed well-versed in the turtle saving routine so please, folks, don't try it yourselves (unless you are an expert, of course.) But do try to help this long surviving animal species make it safely to the other side. Three good men helped that day. I have read sad stories on Norfolk Net regarding less fortunate snapping turtles, which I hope will be somewhat offset by this happy ending. Thank you so much, those 3 good men.

  • 6/24 5:42pm   I live on Seekonk Street near the intersection on Fruit Street. Is anyone who lives in this area, Seekonk, Fruit and Cleveland street, tired of listening to the constant firing of a gun purportedly to train horses? Who gave permission for this to happen without any time or day restrictions and what are the rules for an R-3 zoning? This area may as well be zoned "firing range", I know I didn't sign up for this constant racket!

  • 6/16 3:14pm   I posted a complaint regarding BD and his friends who did not show up for yard work that I believed was scheduled for Sat. I would like to say at this point that I did receive an apology from BD and I accepted it. I didn't mean by "be warned" that the boys were running a con, but rather that when dealing with young people, they are sometimes not as organized or professional as we would like. I had a bad experience, I vented and it's over. Please don't let my experience with BD influence whether or not you hire them for your yard work. I understand that a lot of previous customers have been perfectly satisfied with their work. I will count to 10 a few times before posting again.

  • 6/16 3:08pm   The King Philip Parents' Network would like to acknowledge and thank the many community organizations, businesses, and individuals that sponsored this year's All Night Party. Without their generous financial support, the party would not be possible. The All Night Party is a 24-year-old tradition that keeps KP seniors safe on graduation night. Over 100 volunteers plan, decorate, and chaperone the party, and at least 80% of the senior class attends. A list of this year's sponsors is available on our website: kpparentnetwork.org/fundraising/sponsors

  • 6/16 3:07pm   AB:G - Thank you. I will take a pass on your advice regarding negotiations; as I am all set and can handle such matters without your (again) unrequested, but generously offered assistance. The fact that you feel one could negotiate in a "nail clause" with a local contractor, that ultimately withholds a certain small amount of the overall payment based on this logic, is illustrative of your skilled negotiating capabilities. Try that in the real world and see how many good contractors line up to do the work... Can we just drop this, please? It is tedious and some of us do not share your standards of performance.

  • 6/9 11:48am   CS, rest assured I will let you know. See, here's how it works: Let's say someone - maybe you, for instance - decides to get a new roof, and you like Cook's price, and what you've seen of his work. Before you close the deal, you say: By the way, Mr Cook, since you left a ton of nails (in my case it was probably 50 w/o a big roof) all over the lawn and decks of someone I know, I will withhold a certain modest sum of money until I am convinced they are all gone. Of course you're not that mean, so you could just say: "I understand you have a reputation for leaving nails all over the place; you'd better not..." You get the picture. In my continued defense, and to sooth your jangled sensibilities, I once posted that the masseuse at the esthetician near the Norfolk hardware store is excellent and reasonably priced. I thought the kids did an amazing job dancing at Town Day. Mr Glasser is an accomplished pianist. Did you ever watch him on NCTV? I praised David Rosenberg for his gracious attitude re his campaign. When are you coming for the flowers?

  • 6/9 11:47am   On 5/19 BD posted that he and 2 friends were "hard working" KP students who were looking for yard work to earn money. I contacted BD by email as well as phone and after a couple of starts and stops (I didn't know they were still in school) we arranged for all 3 students to come today for several hours of mulching, raking, etc. I asked for 9:00 am and was told that it would be closer to 10. I stocked up on bottles of water and Gatorade and even made sure that I had stuff for making them lunch... they not only did not show, they didn't call or email. So much for hard working and reliable. Be warned.

  • 6/6 7:00pm   Lions Announce Norfolk Runs 5K Road Race Donations
The 8th annual Norfolk Runs 5K Road Race sponsored by the Norfolk Lions Club and the Norfolk Dunkin' Donuts was held on Sunday, April 27, 2014. This year the race had 151 5K runners and 45 1K Fun Run participants. Many local businesses supported the race with raffle donations and cases of water. The entire event, including the post race cookout, was funded by the Norfolk Dunkin' Donuts.
The Lions are proud to announce that due to the great success of this event, donations of $2,000 each have been awarded to the DARE to Dream Summer Day Program and to the King Philip High School SADD Chapter.
The DARE to Dream Summer Day Program provides fun summer activities to 3rd through 8th grade students in our local communities. It includes alternative activities to reinforce the concept that we can all have fun while staying drug free. This program which is both educational and recreational is held at the Sweatt Field Complex in Wrentham. More information about this program can be found at www.daretodreamsummer.com
Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) is a peer-to-peer education, prevention, and activism organization dedicated to preventing destructive decisions, particularly underage drinking, other drug use, risky and impaired driving, teen violence, and teen suicide. SADD's unique approach involves young people delivering education and prevention messages to their peers through school- and community-wide activities and campaigns responsive to the needs of their particular community.

  • 6/6 6:57pm   I would like to recognize and personally thank Norfolknet poster ``PD'' for his tireless effort in bringing to Town Meeting, zoning modifications to now dis-allow (again) PMLD's (planned multi lot developments) in our downtown B-1 district. I for one do not want to see our Town center built up to the likes of Franklin and Medfield with multi family dwellings crammed in side x side. I feel I speak for a majority of Town residents this way. At Town Meeting a majority of 2/3 voted to rescind the zoning laws that were previously (quietly) passed that would have allowed such.
I moved here some time ago for the quiet country charm this Town has. Let's keep preserving this gem of a country Town so other new families and residents will also find the attractive nature of simplicity and settle here too.
    Thank You PD! Great Job!

  • 6/6 6:55pm   I just saw my first turtle fatality on union street. So sad to see... It is egg laying season. Please be careful and learn to look down at the road when traveling down streets where turtles are known to cross to lay eggs and then make their way back across the road. And when you see turtle crossing signs, this means that they cross in a span that could be more than two miles long as in the case of Union Street.
I helped two that were together in the road yesterday. I just stood behind them and they almost ran across the road to get away from me. Snappers have very far reaching necks and if you are not extremely careful, they can whip their heads around and do harm with their powerful jaws. Always move them in the direction in which they are traveling since they are on a mission either to lay eggs or return from doing so. Very heavy duty gloves and a remnant of some indoor outdoor carpet can be helpful for moving a turtle. And an injured turtle can be brought to the Tufts wildlife clinic in No. Grafton which is only about a 40 minute ride from here. There is also a facility in Weymouth that does an excellent job with injured reptiles.

And are you working in tandem now with Andras to pre-approve all posts? That must be quite a gratifying yet time-consuming job, but surely you are joking... maybe you just wish you could control what everyone says. • 6/6 6:38pm   Area towns have been experiencing a rash of day time house breaks. Norfolk has also had two. If you see something suspicious please call the Norfolk Police. Often there will be a lookout that stays in a vehicle while the other person breaks into the house. If you notice a vehicle in your neighborhood that looks out of place please write down the license plate number and description of the vehicle and call us. The most common items taken during breaks are jewelry and electronics. The bad guys don't want to be in the house for a long period of time, so please hide your jewelry. Most people keep their jewelry in a box on their dresser in the master bedroom. The bad guys know this, and that is the first place they go. Make it harder for them to find it. Thanks!

Just wanted to post out here that we are holding our annual Low Cost Micro Chipping Clinic on June 21st at The Village Groomer in Walpole MA. The clinic will run from 11AM - 2PM and anyone can bring their dog or cat to the clinic to get a fully registered micro chip implanted, walk ins welcome. If you have a shy/aggressive dog or cat we ask you call me ahead of time to set up an appointment so we can have a quiet area for your pet. For a $25.00 donation into the Town of Norfolk Animal Gift Account a licensed veterinarian will implant a chip into your pet. All you need to do is contact the company online afterwards to submit your personal information. Under MA Law, all animal control officers must scan each and every domestic animal that comes into their care. This will increase your chances for a speedy reunion with your furry friend. Please stop on by June 21st with your cat or dog and support a worthy cause. Our gift account is in place to help animals that come into our care that need more help than our annual municipal budget can support.
    Sincerely,
    - Hilary Cohen, Norfolk Animal Control

  • 6/3 3:43pm   AB-G: So, now it is Lowes who has let you down. You have let us all know how disappointed you are with our local businesses so often that I don't take it seriously any more. • 6/3 3:42pm   To AB-G: While I am not a plumber, I have replaced all 3 toilets in my home. The wax ring acts as an air and water seal between the toilet and the waste pipe directly beneath the toilet. The ring is very important, as sewer gas and/or water can emerge if the ring if not properly installed. Under normal circumstances, there should be no oozing wax. It could be the installer was sloppy when scraping off the old wax ring, or perhaps the new ring was too big for the specific toilet, or the new ring is not properly installed. The telltale sign of an improperly installed ring is sewer odor or leaking water. If these symptoms are noted, I would recommend calling a local plumber to remove and reinstall the toilet. Absent the symptoms noted above, the issue, although annoying, could be cosmetic. Hope this helps.

  • 5/31 4:18pm   Norfolk's 5th Annual Clean and Green Event - Thank You! The Norfolk Grange #135 would like to thank all who helped make Norfolk's recent 5th Annual Clean and Green happen this year. The town-wide cleanup followed by an Earth Day celebration at the Grange hall took place on Saturday, May 3, 2014.
First and foremost, many thanks to those participants who volunteered to help clean the streets and public places in Norfolk this year! We collected just under three quarters of a ton of trash and several large bags of recyclables! In addition, we collected 2 large bags of redeemable bottles and cans and donated them to the King Philip Regional High School collection.
We also would like to thank the following Norfolk Town Offices for their assistance in making our 5th annual event a success -- the Norfolk Board of Selectmen's Office, Norfolk Police Department, Norfolk Public Library, Norfolk Recreation Department, the Freeman-Kennedy School and H. Olive Day School. We especially want to thank the Department of Public Works for their critical support in making this event possible.
Finally, the Norfolk Grange would like to thank the following local organizations and businesses for their generous contributions in support of this event: Roche Bros. Supermarket, LPC Removal Services and Dunkin' Donuts. And, also, many thanks to The Country Gazette, The Sun Chronicle, Norfolk & Wrentham Local Town Pages, Norfolknet and NCTV for publicizing our event.
    Once again, thank you everyone!
    - Robin Lind Biscaia, The Norfolk Grange #135

  • 5/31 4:15pm   My experience with plumbing installation at Lowe's in Plainville? NOT good. While their plumber was here he left water on the floor on which one of us nearlyn slipped and fell. The wax ring appears to be oozing slightly from the base of the toilet. I notice, too, that one of the little knobs covering the screws at the base of the toilet is off center, and he wiped some wax into the little gap instead of fixing it. This makes me wonder if the toilet is on straight. I cannot get a diiferent plumber to come as he is the only one they use, which I find amazing for a store of that size. I have a one year warranty on installation, but I have lost confidence in them. I will go to the sales floor to tell my story (one of them is supposedly a plumber) as well as write to corporate. I intend to insist on a diffewrent plumber. I hope I don't need to hire a private plumber if I can even get one to become involved. I am done with Lowe's. Are any of you plumbers who might advise as to the seriousness of this oozing wax? As always, thanks,
    - AB-G

  • 5/31 4:08pm   We would like to give a huge shout-out to Hilary Cohen, our wonderful Animal Control Officer. She helped me catch and keep a precious, homeless, young cat this week. Hilary approved my "Have a Heart" trap for cats, taught me its usage and answered a million questions. She also verified that now-named "Joelle" was not owned by anyone else who was frantically looking for their lost pet. We've had many, many cats but taking in a homeless, frightened outside kitty is new to us. Thank you, Hilary, for your patience, good humor and endless help! Norfolk is fortunate to have you.
Regarding homeless cats (and other domestic animals for that matter) I would sincerely hope that people would do the right thing when wanting to discard an unwanted animal. That would be to contact a shelter, a no-kill shelter, and ask for the animal to be taken in for adoption. Offering a donation is always helpful and desperately needed by the shelter as they do the humane thing in trying to find ``forever homes'' for these helpless animals--who cannot speak for themselves. I believe that our newly adopted ``Joelle'' was unwanted and quite frankly, ``dumped'' for someone else to worry about. I am grateful that my family can can be that someone else. She is young, loving, cuddly, innocent and worthy of a happy life. Again, I hope people will try to do the right thing.

  • 5/31 3:30pm   Free hosta plants! I've never seen hosta send out suckers, but it happened this spring. The ones I have plenty of are fluted (grooved) and sort of corrugated or rippled, and are solid green tinged with blue. They have wide, heart-shaped leaves and tend to grow pretty big. Please ask Andras for my email and we can arrange a time for you to come. Just bring something in which to take them away and your own shovel or spade. These are small-to-medium individuals, so there's no cutting or separating necessary. [Contact box484@norfolknet.com - Wm.]

  • 5/25 12:31pm   Registration for Stony Brook Wildlife Sanctuary Day Camp is open and spots are still available. Please register by either calling us at 508-528-3140 or filling out the registration forms online at massaudubon.org. Stony Brook day camp is open to children from ages 4 to 15 and hosts a variety of educational and exciting activities for campers.
Stony Brook's 244-acre wildlife sanctuary is a great natural classroom. Campers will learn about forest, field, and wetland habitats. The curriculum is enhanced by trail explorations, hands-on activities, crafts, and non-competitive games. Our goal is to provide an entertaining and educational experience in a safe, supportive setting. We strive to help your child better understand, enjoy and appreciate nature.
All sessions feature different activities. Campers may attend more than one session without repetition. One counselor and one counselor-in-training (CIT) will lead each group. The camper-to-counselor ratio for 5 and 6 year olds is five campers to one counselor. Other ages, it is eight campers to each counselor.
Staff are selected for their maturity and experience working with children in an outdoor setting. A majority of the counselors are undergraduate students majoring in education or environmental science. This generates a vibrant and highly motivated atmosphere as their enthusiasm for the natural world is contagious with the campers.

Watch out for your little doggie there - the mud is far from fragrant.

  • 5/25 12:19pm   regarding the "mess" of downtown -- CN, what specifically are you talking about? The new buildings; the library addition, town hall, even Walgreens, blend nicely. The only disjointed buildings are the ones with with Foodmart (it's a shame that landowner wouldn't sell to Daley -- look at the great job they did with their station) and the Wayside building, both of which are older than the other buildings.
I think the center is going in the right direction, and the Walgreens was a great addition that saves many trips out of town. Considering what the downtown was 20 years ago when I first moved in it's much improved.

  • 5/18 10:45pm   Thanks to all who replied to my post about the lost dress! Finally, after mentioning in an email to the manager that I would pursue this however possible, he responded and offered me a low reimbursement, which I said I would consider after researching the value online. I found an identical dress, in a different size, on EBay, for $49, and told him I'd settle for that, since I would have EBay'ed the dress if I hadn't brought it to Chic 2 Chic for consignment. He said I could go to their new shop after it opened last Sunday, and collect that amount. Yesterday, I showed up and was given $5 less than the agreed amount. I took the money, without a word, and left forever. I will try the Walpole consignment store next time, because there's nothing like a good recommendation to restore confidence. It's one of the great values of this website.

  • 5/18 10:23pm   Norfolk Lions 50/50 Golf Ball Drop
Weather forecast for Norfolk Community Day 2014: It will be raining golf balls at mid-afternoon!
How would you like a chance to win up to $1000 or $250 and support local charities at the same time? Buy one of the Norfolk Lion's charity golf balls for $10.00. This year up to 250 numbered golf balls will be sold and two prizes will be awarded.
Between 2:30 and 3:00 on Norfolk Community Day, all numbered balls will be placed in a container and dropped 40 feet from the top of the Norfolk Fire Dept ladder truck. The balls will fall onto a 100 foot circle painted on the grass with a pin in the center. The ball closest to the pin wins $1000 and the second closest ball wins $250. The remaining $1250 will be donated to Norfolk charities to be named at a later date.
In the unlikely event of a tie, the winnings will be split. The Norfolk Police Dept will monitor judging. You do not have to be present to win.
With only 250 balls sold, your odds of winning are fantastic, so hurry and get yours. The Norfolk Lions will be selling golf balls at the Norfolk Recycling/Transfer Station on Saturday, May 31 from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and at the Pond Street Complex on Sunday, June 1 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. They will also be on sale at Community Day, if not already sold out.
You must be 18 or older to participate. Norfolk Lions and their families are eligible to enter.

  • 5/12 4:10pm   For (I think) MJS: About your "lost" dress at Chic2Chic. I don't see why that's any different than a dry cleaner losing a dress. You got a receipt for it, no? I heard them say at the new store they were "looking for things". If you know enough about the particulars of the dress, I bet there's a way to locate it online, or at least find out form the manufacturer what was the approximate value of that dress or its original price. If you have the time and/or the nerve, say you are willing to go to small claims court. Why not? They don't need any hassles with a new store to run and the owner having a baby soon, but unless you persevere, they'll just play the dunce. Plus, they must have a record of the price they put on the dress as well as a description. They should give you half of that, or whatever the percentage is. Don't back down. Good luck,

  • 5/12 11:54am   I want to congratulate Jay Talerman on his election as Norfolk Town Moderator.
I am deeply indebted to all of you for your encouragement, support, advice, assistance, and hard work. Thank you!
The reason that I ran for Town Moderator was to increase citizen engagement and participation (not merely attendance) in Town Meetings (and, more generally, in town government). At the beginning of the campaign, I started soliciting suggestions about how to do that. I promised that if another candidate won the election, I'd share my ideas, what I've learned about practices in other jurisdictions, and all the input I've received with the winner.
I've decided that I should share that information not only with the winner, but with everyone. I have a Google site at sites.google.com/site/rosenberg4moderator It has a page of listing books related to Town Meetings and books related to increasing civic engagement in government decision-making (not necessarily at Town Meetings). The site also has a page with links to articles and papers about other civic engagement efforts and about people and groups that are working on open government and increased citizen participation. As soon as I've organized the suggestions that I've received, I'll create another page on the google site and post the suggestions there.
Jay is quoted in the Sun Chronicle article as saying "... I want to use my experience to help Norfolk voters get engaged in the process that is town meeting." I've offered to help Jay increase citizen participation. If I am successful in doing that, I will have accomplished the most important part of my goal.
I appreciated both Jay and Gerry running clean, civil, honorable, and friendly campaigns.
I certainly learned a lot from the experience of being a candidate.
Again, my deep thanks to all of you.
    - David Rosenberg

  • 5/12 11:04am   Norfolk Residents, there are 5 Citizen Petition Articles on the 2014 Annual Town Meeting Warrant. The articles are 27,28,29,30 and 31 and they are on pages 13-15 of this years warrant. The articles address High Density Residential development in Downtown Norfolk, something that many Norfolk residents that supported the petitions are against.
The Advisory Committee's comments and recommendation on these articles are disappointing. The Advisory Committee states that there is a "Defined Process" in Town for potential changes. Well, this process has led to potential changes that many residents around Town are not in favor of. But the fact is, a process every registered voter has the right to under Massachusetts General Law Chapter 39 Section 10, is to file a petition with a "registered voter subject" to bring directly to Town Meeting subject matter the he or she feels strongly for or against for the citizens of the town to vote on directly.
I ask that you review the articles and be sure to make an effort to attend Town Meeting where your vote will help, among other things, to preserve the character of Downtown Norfolk.
Here is a summary of what each article will do with your yes vote.
    1. Article 27: If passed, will add the language, or PMLD to Zoning Bylaw I.4.a.11 that specifies that a Planned Multi-Lot Development (PMLD) is also subject to the 16 bedroom limit that is imposed on a single lot. Without this language a developer can take a single lot and "pie" it up into multiple lots thereby circumventing the 16 bedroom limit that they were subject to as a single lot. There is also added language that clarifies who the Special Permit Granting Authority is, the Zoning Board of Appeals.
    2. Article 28: If passed, will delete the Zoning Bylaw I.7.a.1 in its entirety. Passed in 2010, bylaw I.7.a.1 allows High Density Residential Developments in our downtown business district. That's right, residential only development in our downtown business district. Norfolk has a small business district downtown and allowing residential only development in that zone is something that should be not allowed.
    3. Article 29: If passed, will add the property at 25 Rockwood Road to the R-1 residential zone. Currently this property is in the B-1 business district and was added to this district at the May 2013 Annual Town Meeting just last year. Brought in front of the town for a second time after it was voted down at the November 2012 special town meeting, this article passed at the 2013 Annual Town Meeting without a voter count during the meeting, something I feel should have been done. The property is currently used as residential and keeping it that way will preserve the character of the downtown area, which will be in harmony with the R-1 residential neighborhood which it abuts.
    4. Article 30: If passed, will add the property at 108 Main Street to the R-2 residential zone. The property is currently used as residential and keeping it that way will preserve the character of the downtown area, which will be in harmony with the R-2 residential neighborhood which it abuts.
    5. Article 31: If passed, will add the property at 106 Main Street to the R-2 residential zone. This property was used as residential until the current property owner let it fall into disarray. Placing this property in the residential zone will also preserve the character of the downtown area, which will be in harmony with the R-2 residential neighborhood which it abuts.
Please come and participate in our local democratic process and let your voice be heard. It is your right in this great country of ours to do so.
We ask for your support and yes vote on articles 27-31.
    Thank you,
    Norfolk Residents for Responsible Development

  • 5/12 10:52am   Responding to BF (2) regarding Jane & Paul's Farm and the pending indefinite postponement of the warrant article at upcoming Town Meeting -- At the last CPC meeting on April 30, I read the following statement during the public hearing for CPC warrant articles.
"As has been discussed at previous CPC meetings, and meetings of other Boards, the Trust for Public Land had reached an agreement with the owner of Jane and Paul's Farm to purchase about 70 acres of the farm. The purchase and sale agreement was signed, and the application for the APR was reviewed and nominated by the Department of Agricultural Resources. However, recently the owner decided it was not in their best interest to move forward with the agreement. Chris LaPointe (TPL) continued to work very closely with the owner to amend the original agreement so that the purchase of the APR would move forward in a manner that the owner was comfortable with. Ultimately, the farm's owner decided to retain ownership of the property, and not go forward with the Agricultural Preservation Restriction, and the contract has been terminated. Therefore this warrant article will be indefinitely postponed at Town Meeting."

The Un-Common Theatre Company is thrilled to one of the first community theatre companies in the country to perform this newly released Broadway favorite! "The Addams Family" is a magnificently macabre tale that explores the darkly delirious world of Gomez, Morticia, Uncle Fester, Grandma, Wednesday, Pugsley and, of course, Lurch. The weird and wonderful family comes to spooky and spectacular life in a story that is every father's nightmare.
Wednesday Addams (Cara DiPietro, Norfolk, MA), the ultimate princess of darkness, has grown up and fallen in love with Lucus (Matthew Corbett, Attleboro, MA), a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family - a man her parents have never met. And if that weren't upsetting enough, Wednesday confides in her father Gomez (Joe Spirito, North Smithfield, RI) and begs him not to tell her mother Morticia (Alexandra Phillips, Plainville, MA). Now, Gomez must do something he's never done before - keep a secret from his beloved wife, Morticia. Everything will change for the whole family on the fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday's 'normal' boyfriend and his parents.
Un-Common's Spring Production showcases middle and high school students and reunites the NETC Moss Hart award winning team (from Un-Common's Secret Garden) of Director Michael La Fleur (Las Vegas, NV) and Music Director Esther Zabinski (Providence, RI).

This informative program includes a description of the five signs that put you at risk of diabetes, preventative measures, tips to improve glucose levels, and individualized follow-up sessions. Call the Senior Center at 508-528-4430 to register for this session.
Paula Sullivan, a certified Tai-Chi instructor and Reiki Practitioner, provides group instruction in Tai-Chi Tuesdays at 1 p. m. at the Center. Training in these graceful movements promotes mental focus, improved balance, and a more active lifestyle. As a result, many health professionals are now recommending Tai-Chi to their patients, especially those in their senior years. Paula's training is also adaptable for beginners or advanced students. In addition, there are Yoga classes conducted by Yoga Instructor Jennifer LaFond that meet Mondays at 10 a. m. and Thursdays at 10:15 a. m. The practice of various forms of Yoga has also grown dramatically in recent years as it quiets the mind while exercising the body and can be easily modified to the needs of seniors. A minimal fee of $2.00 per class is charged for both programs.
For those who prefer more conventional exercise, there is a free video program called "Easy Does It," that lives up to its name-a relaxing yet energizing series of exercises for all, including those who are older or are recovering from illness or surgery. This group meets at the Senior Center Monday through Friday from 9 a. m. to 10 a. m. And, finally, the use of state-of-the-art Cybex Exercise Cycles await Norfolk residents and are set up on the lower level of the Center. Participants must sign a waiver and take a few minutes to be trained in safety and proper use.
These are just a few of the activities available at Norfolk's beautiful Senior Center. To receive a full schedule of all Senior Center programs and events, call (508) 528-4430 or visit the Council on Aging site at http://www.virtualnorfolk.org/public_documents/norfolkma_coa/index

  • 5/12 10:35am   I realized it would take some time to get this in to the Norfolk Net so here are my posts (updated):
Question for Norfolk residents- If we want to have a 20' x 30' Tent put up for a graduation party do we need a permit? What about for a port-o-let? Thanks
I just wanted to thank the Norfolk Grange for hosting the Clean and Green Campaign again this year. They provided a wonderful opportunity to clean up our local roads and take pride in Norfolk. There was a team of folks available to grab the trash and recyclables right from the vehicle as well as refreshments for the hard work and lots of information about environmental causes. They put a lot of effort into this event and I encourage all of Norfolk to get involved. I realize that we are all busy but if we all take an hour out of our weekend and help clean up one section of road- it makes a BIG difference! Looking forward to it again next year.

  • 5/12 10:33am   I attended the NCL candidates night and was disappointed that the candidates were limited in the question and answer section to one minute. I have the same objection at Town Meeting.
We never received an answer to Mr Palumbo's question, he barely had time to think. Why was Ms Lehan allowed to answer questions that were directed to Ms Greene but Ms Greene was then told to sit down when there were questions designated for Ms Lehan. Unless the candidates are given questions earlier... how about, if the question is given to a candidate just ahead of the previous individual's remarks.
Mr Rosenberg is the man at each Town Meeting to ask the clarifying question... the question that many want to ask but may be reluctant. Many of the articles are written in a language that is not easily understood, his questions and comments help us all. He is the town moderator I want. We need experience in the town clerk's office, that means we need Carol Greene. Carol is pleasant and helpful, but most importantly she is organized and efficient, knows the policies and procedures and abides by the laws of Norfolk and the Commonwealth. We need her expertise. She has my vote. Please make your voice heard and Vote Tuesday, May 6th.

  • 5/4 2:19pm   At the Candidates' Night sponsored by the Norfolk Community League on 30-Apr-2014, I was asked what I would do as Town Moderator to increase voter participation in the Town Meeting and town decision making. I was given only one minute for my answer. I said that there is no magic fairy dust that would increase participation without time and effort on the part of both the Town Moderator and the voters. I said that I want to collaborate with town boards and committees to increase participation. I said that my first step would be to ask the voters in Norfolk what they thought should be done to make it easier and worth their while to participate more fully.
That is all true. But I suspect that it left the questioner unsatisfied because I suspect that he or she wanted concrete examples of specific things that we could do to increase participation. There are a number of specific things that were done in other cities and towns. I also have some specific ideas that I haven't seen used in other places. Unfortunately, the one minute that I was given for my answer didn't give me time to list any of them. I'd like to invite anyone who is interested in exploring this to discuss it with me.
There are "Links to civic engagement efforts in other locations" on my Google site at https://sites.google.com/site/rosenberg4moderator/home/links
We can have the discussion on my Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/Rosenberg4Moderator
You can send E-mail to me at the address David-Rosenberg@earthlink.net with "Norfolk Civic Engagement" in the subject (to help me find those messages among the other E-Mail I get). Or if you'd prefer, you can call me at 1-508-528-7124.
Of course, the other candidates for Town Moderator are invited (and encouraged) to join the discussion.
    - David Rosenberg, Candidate for Norfolk Town Moderator

  • 5/4 2:18pm   Hello - Please take the time to get to know the candidates. Election Day is next Tuesday, May 6.
I ask that you please consider Carol Greene for the Town Clerk's position. In addition to her current experience as Acting Town Clerk and her previous positions as Asst. Town Clerk and Records Clerk, electing Carol will bring continuity to the duties of the office and will benefit the community by having someone that is knowledgeable and well versed on Mass General Laws, elections, local town issues, and Norfolk By-laws and Regulations. The investments that we as taxpayers have already made towards the courses and training from the Massachusetts Town Clerks Association and other state and local agencies for the town clerk position will save us the added cost of having to start the process all over again.
It is important that the community has an experienced town clerk that can address the many issues, needs and questions the community may have from town meeting procedures, open meeting laws, conflicts of interest to licensing and permits. The reason why many towns that appoint their Town Clerk require qualified individuals with at least 3-5 years of experience is because everything that occurs in the office is governed by both Mass General Law and the town's By-laws.
The town clerk's office is usually the first place people go to for answers or help. Carol's commitment to the community and the town clerk position is beyond reproach. She has demonstrated that she is extremely capable and conducts herself in a very professional and personable manner. Her knowledge of the laws and the duties of the office will serve Norfolk well. Carol has also been instrumental in helping to streamline processes and create better efficiencies in the everyday functions of the town clerk's office through the use of technology and online access.
One aspect that is often forgotten but is very important is the relationships that town officials have with each other and with officials from other communities. It takes time and effort to develop and nurture these relationships which are mutually beneficial. The strong relationships Carol has with the clerks from other communities to discuss issues and share ideas benefits Norfolk. I hope you will take the time to learn more about Carol and join me in voting for Carol Greene as Town Clerk next Tuesday, May 6th.
    Thank you.

  • 5/4 2:17pm   I was very impressed with David Rosenberg's presentation at Candidate's Night. He has been a Norfolk resident for over 35 years and has attended most of the Town Meetings over the last 35 years. He wants to increase attendance at Town Meetings by making it a more meaningful experience and taking advantage of the ideas, advice, and wisdom of Norfolk voters. He has asked us to work with him in coming up with ideas and suggestions that will enable us to be more effective in helping to make the town's decisions. If you agree that that is worthwhile, I suggest that you support David Rosenberg for Norfolk Town Moderator in the May 6th Town election.

  • 5/4 2:16pm   I hope that you will join me in casting your vote on May 6th for Jason (``Jay'') Talerman for Norfolk's Moderator. I have known Jay and his family for many years and find him to be a dedicated, calm, compassionate, funny and highly intelligent guy. Jay has served Norfolk on countless boards but is also an attorney who serves as Town Counsel to many towns. His knowledge of municipal law is extensive and Norfolk has a great opportunity to tap that knowledge to help us run our Town Meeting. Please vote for Jay on May 6th and, in the meantime, check out his facebook page at www.facebook.com/talermanmoderator for more info.

  • 5/4 2:15pm   Please support Jay Talerman for Town Moderator in the town elections on May 6. Currently Deputy Moderator and Chair of the Council on Aging, Jay has also served on several town boards and committees, showing a long-standing commitment to the Norfolk community. As a municipal attorney representing a variety of client towns and cities, he has a wealth of expert knowledge about the laws and traditions governing Town Meeting procedure as well as the financial, zoning, and other issues facing Norfolk . Jay Talerman's dedication to our community, along with his professional experience, make him an ideal candidate for Town Moderator.

  • 5/4 1:31pm   For those residents interested in the future of education in our public and private schools, please watch this brilliant breakdown of the origins of Common Core and all the tentacles that are attached to it. Dr. Duke Pesta, an English Literature Professor from Wisconsin has given 140 speeches across the country about the unknowns of this federal and private intrusion into our schools. I watched it twice and I am still shaking.

  • 5/4 1:30pm   Respected Norfolk Voters,
My name is Glenn Hill, and I am running as an incumbent for Library Trustee. When making your choice on May 6, I urge you to cast your vote based on experience and a track record of accomplishment. Since my appointment last May, the Library Trustees have accomplished significant strategic goals, including review and revision of all policies and procedures, and institution of new policies and practices where needed. The Board has worked cooperatively and seamlessly in this effort, and in cooperation with the Library Director, continues to advocate for the interests of the Library and the community. On May 6, I respectfully ask for your vote so I may continue to serve. Thank you most kindly for your consideration.
    - Glenn C. Hill, Member, Board of Library Trustees

  • 5/4 1:28pm   Having resided in Norfolk for nearly 64 years and working as the assistant Town Clerk and collecting taxes when the office was twofold, not as one as it is today, I can tell you that the Town Clerk has a lot of responsibilityand one can not just step in to do the job without some assistance. Carol Greene, in my opinion, is the only qualified person for the job. Is she willing to help someone else to forfill that job? There is much to learn and how well I know. Please in voting think about what the consequences will be if Carol is not elected. I went through this before and we had a serious problem that most in town do not realize today.
I shall vote for qualification and experience.

  • 5/4 1:19pm   Here's some interesting data on Norfolk's cost of car insurance compared to other cities in Massachusetts. We're at $1,104 a year, which is 18% less than the overall state average and ranks us as the 18th cheapest city for auto insurance in the state. That's a little more than what our neighbors in Franklin, Medfield, and Medway pay, but 8 - 13% less than what drivers in Wrentham, Foxborough, and Walpole. • 5/4 1:07pm   I would like to caution people who use Chic2Chic, the consignment shop in Foxboro, when consigning your things, to make duplicate lists, with descriptions and pictures of your items. Have the clerk sign your lists. I left an expensive dress with them. They lost it, and won't help me, or return any of my phone calls! I was told that most people aren't that attached to their consignments, and maybe I never even brought it in! It was the first time I consigned, and what an awful experience - I'll never do that again.

  • 5/4 1:06pm   David Rosenberg, I want to thank you for giving us a real choice for Norfolk Town Moderator. I find that not very many voters participate in Town Meetings and those that do attend are pretty much constrained to voting yes or no on articles that other people formulated. I look forward to working with you to develop ideas to enhance participation in Town Meetings and civic engagement in Town Government. You have my vote. I hope that everyone else who wants to increase voters' participation in Town Meetings and town decision-making will join me in supporting David Rosenberg for Norfolk Town Moderator in the May 6th Town election.

  • 5/4 1:03pm   RE: The Upcoming Town Election - Norfolk's Town Moderator
On May 6th as our Norfolk Town elections come around again, we will be voting on who will be our next Town Moderator. Three candidates have stepped up and "put their hats" in the race for this important position.
Of the three, it seems to me, one of those candidates, David Rosenberg, has a very interesting and in my opinion, most necessary approach to this position. In the past David worked diligently to create a user friendly webpage providing knowledge about our town's civic issues. He continues to focus on encouraging as well as increasing participation in decision making by providing Norfolk residents with helpful tools before the voting process begins. David says that an informed voter is an EMPOWERED voter. To his credit, Rosenberg's campaign web site https://sites.google.com/site/Rosenberg4Moderator contains some very valuable info, including the names of various books detailing how to improve Town Meetings and what we as voters need in order to make the most of our participation. I heartily suggest you take a look at his website.
I feel David is collaborative. Already he has been in touch with the other two candidates for Town Moderator as well as with our Norfolk Board of Selectmen to discuss good ways to to increase civic involvement.
Through his Norfolknet postings and his campaign flyers David asks town residents for suggestions and input. When I spoke with him recently, David said that if another candidate is elected, he would be happy to turn over the suggestions and input he has received from fellow Norfolk neighbors and voters during this campaign. I think if you as residents feel that Norfolk Town Meetings should be more participatory and that you desire more opportunities to engage in the making of town decisions, I suggest you consider supporting David Rosenberg for the position of Norfolk Town Moderator in our Town Election on May 6th. Thanks.
    - PR

  • 5/4 1:02pm   While reading Norfolknet today, I realized 2 things:
Someone with my initials is supporting David Rosenberg for moderator. Good for him/her; I plan to vote that way. How could he/she have known?
I need to tell you why I think Carol Green should be elected Clerk
Two years ago, I had planned to drive south to a squadron reunion in Florida in late October. Because of the drive time and the event time, I would not be back in time to vote in the election. I verified with the clerks office that I would be able to fill out an absentee ballot on the Monday before I left.
Monday arrived. So did Hurricane Sandy. Town Hall closed. I called the clerks office and got a recorded message. There then followed a couple of phone calls back and forth with Carol, who was at home, She could not have been more helpful. The upshot of this (and one of the reasons it's nice to live in a small town in New England) was the Sean Dooley, having completed his work with the Fire Department that afternoon, called me at home from the Town Hall at about 7PM to tell me that if I could get there and show ID, he would give me an absentee ballot, and I could submit my votes.
This isn't a story about qualificiations or political alignment; its a story told about elected officials who serve their constituents. I hope Carol is elected to continue her service to the people in Norfolk.

In Internet slang, a troll is a person who sows discord on the Internet by starting arguments or upsetting people, by posting inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community (such as a forum, chat room, or blog) with the deliberate intent of provoking readers into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion

  • 4/25 6:10pm   May 6, 2014 - Election in Norfolk MA. David Rosenberg has been a Norfolk resident for over 35 years. As a candidate for Norfolk Town Moderator he offers a breath of fresh air. • 4/25 5:51pm   A Letter From George Washington To Martha On his Overnight Stay In Norfolk, Massachusetts, 1775
This letter was recently discovered in 2009 in the Massachusetts State Archives by actual researchers, and was recently transcribed from the original and represents factual information.
    Background Information:
In the year 1775, George Washington was Commander-in -chief of the newly formed Continental Army, and on the run from the Redcoats, who were searching for him throughout Medfield to Newton. Below is a letter he wrote to his wife Martha, about his overnight stay in Norfolk, MA, and had dispatched back to Virginia by horseback... in case he never made it home.
    Dearest, Martha,

Today I write to you from a peculiar place, twixt the Pole of Wal and Medsway, a bare pit of a stop called, Nor'folk, which I hardly afrain because it does have few souls. My accommodations at Josiah Wares' Place are quite accommodating, and we must slap many knees with mirth some day as dists have come from our gaurds over their accommodations amongst the Nor'folk- mosquitoes-hilly pines! Laughter Oust Loudst!

But the inhabitants of the land of few peoples are most strange, sometimes odd, and me thinks the swamp gases may affect thine senses. Today a young maiden, Tilpka Smith, went to water thy trusty steeed, and tripped over her hoop-skirt ad infinitum and almost into the drink-well, But truth be told, it made for much mirth and meeriment!

And the Nor'forkians speak in strange tongues sometimes, about events that plague them and us, and of course Wares Tavern and its hearty oatbeers sometimes increase dousts volume. There a Mon did presenteth me a shiny new axe, for I am thankful to Ye God, but when I told I held nary a tool since management, he sayeth, loudly, "For fending off Redcoats-Ye-baby-supplehand-skin-wig-fancy-pantaloon-wearer". Needless to sayeth doust drink and demons go in handeth in handeth.

In parting, I will be glad to be gone from this Nor' folk and swamp er' place, and thinking of you, as I ponder these thoughts under the only Cherry tree in Nor'folk, caring for duties against tyranny, as I sharpenst my new axe.

    All mY Love,

    George W.

  • 4/25 5:48pm   Go Greene, Norfolk!
Hello - Thanks for giving me the opportunity to tell you about Carol Greene.
I have known Carol and her family for over 10 years, and have had many opportunities to observe and work with Carol in a variety of civic and community endeavors.
Carol is a standout person and citizen. Besides her obvious intelligence, Carol has always been keenly aware of the strengths and needs of her community, whether it be in the community of her home, her town, or her world. Carol helped me with several humanitarian and community projects while we served on the Norfolk TPA, and she has continued to serve Norfolk and the King Philip Schools in many ways.
Carol is not afraid of hard work, and when she faces a challenge, she not only brings her talents and effort, Carol brings her heart. Carol Green is a compassionate member of our community. She is a member of the Norfolk Lions, the King Philip Music Association, a volunteer for the Norfolk Brigade, a past Vice President of the Norfolk Teacher Parent Association, and a former Treasurer of the Federated Church. Her vision is not only limited to Norfolk. In 2006, Carol volunteered for Habitat for Humanity and helped rebuild homes in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. We need more Carols in the world, and we are most fortunate to have her in Norfolk.
Carol is running for Town Clerk in Norfolk. Most voters in Norfolk already know Carol as an elections staff member and record clerk. She has been our Assistant Town Clerk for several years, and is the current Acting Town Clerk. She is familiar with the requirements needed to do the job. And Carol Greene does it well. Very well!
It is important to note that Norfolk has had 3 Town Clerks in the past 8 years. That is too much turnover for such an important position in town. The responsibilities and functions of a Town Clerk warrant continuity. Unlike most town positions, the Town Clerk must be familiar not only with the By Laws and Regulations of its town, but also be familiar with and adhere to the Massachusetts General Laws. Carol is already familiar and well versed in these areas. By electing Carol Town Clerk, we have an individual who is already experienced in the position; neither Carol or the Town will suffer through a huge learning curve while Carol learns the job- she already knows it. In addition, we will save money in not having to educate or train another newcomer to the position. Carol has already participated in coursework through the Massachusetts Town Clerks Association and other State agencies. Additionally, Carol was the Assistant Town Clerk when the Attorney General's Office and the Secretary of the Commonwealth's Office implemented new policies for Town Clerk offices. Carol has been involved with the Town Hall project (funded by the CPC) to get vital documents digitalized and in a workable, usable database. She is fully trained to use this system and has even trained other town personnel when it has been expanded to other Town offices.
Look at the list of Carol's experience in Norfolk and her experience as the Assistant and Acting Town Clerk, and it is clear that we have a hard working, intelligent, and committed woman seeking to make Norfolk and even better place to live in. I trust Carol, I believe in Carol, and I encourage you to vote for Carol Greene for Town Clerk on May 6.
    Thanks for your consideration.
    - KM
  • 4/25 5:47pm   The voters of Norfolk are fortunate in having candidates for two of the important positions in town government. My selection for Moderator is Jay Talerman and for Town Clerk Carol Greene.
I support Jay because of his legal background, Town Counsel to an assortment of towns and performance as interim Town meeting Moderator when the standing Moderator has recused herself. Further, as Chairman of The Council on Aging, Jay has demonstrated leadership, willingness to support and compassion for the needs of the senior citizens Norfolk.
Carol Greene possesses the experience and knowledge to provide the uninterrupted Town Clerk duties for the Norfolk townspeople. Working her way up through the Town Clerks office positions and attending the state sponsored/Attorney General Town Clerks courses with the Norfolk Town Clerk her knowledge is up to date and reliable. She was chosen for and is currently the Acting Town Clerk and she continues to fully perform that function.
I ask that you consider these two fine candidates when you vote on May 6th. Thank you.

  • 4/20 4:30pm   To KP, I've done my homework on the origins of Common Core and PARCC, have you?
Here some facts about Common Core written by Dr, Sandra Stostky:
Fact Sheet on Common Core 's Developers, Writers, Validation Committee, and Standards

Posted on February 25, 2014 by chascherrie

    Sandra Stotsky
    February 2014

    1. Who developed Common Core's standards? Three private organizations in Washington DC: the National Governors Association (NGA), the Council for Chief State School Officers (CCSSO), and Achieve, Inc.-all funded by a fourth private organization, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

    2. Who selected the members of the Standards Development Work Groups? In the absence of official information, it seems that Achieve, Inc. and the Gates Foundation selected most of the key personnel to write the high school-level college-readiness standards.

    3. Who was represented on the Standards Development Work Groups that wrote the high school college-readiness standards? Chiefly test and curriculum developers from ACT, CB, Achieve, and NCEE.

    4. Who was not represented on the Standards Development Work Groups? High school English and mathematics teachers, English professors, scientists, engineers, parents, state legislators, and state or local school board members

    5. Are records available of their meetings? No. These groups had no open meetings and have never provided access to any public comment or critiques they received.

  • 4/20 4:26pm   Please show your support for Glenn Hill for the Library Board of Trustees and Jay Talerman for Town Moderator in the upcoming town elections on May 6th. We are very fortunate in that these two fellow-residents are not only the most effective candidates for these positions, but ideal ones as well.
Mr. Hill has past experience serving on the Library Board and, over the years, has shown an ongoing involvement and interest in our library and its many community activities. He also brings invaluable computer and information technology expertise to that position.
Similarly, Jay Talerman possesses the perfect resume for Town Moderator. As the town's Deputy Moderator as well as his past service on a variety of town boards and committees (including the Council on Aging, Master Plan Committee, Bylaw Review Committee, et al.), he has clearly demonstrated his dedication to the town and his commitment to the best interests of its residents. Additionally, as a municipal attorney representing a variety of towns in the state he is not only acutely familiar with the laws, procedures, and traditions of the New England Town Meeting, he brings his extraordinary knowledge and capabilities addressing the present-day (and often) crucial issues facing towns very similar to ours throughout the Commonwealth.

  • 4/20 4:25pm   To KP: Two points: One, if a student asks if some particular material is going to be on a test, the teacher should tell that student, all material covered is fair game. That way, if they want to memorize something, they can memorize everything! Second, regarding Common Core and the idea that tests don't indicate competency or something along those lines: I think it is possible to take a test, score well and not necessarily know the subject matter thoroughly (could have studied the "right" material, could have gotten lucky etc.). I also think it's possible, in certain cases, to take a test, score poorly and know the material pretty well (could be nerves etc.). But to go all one way to the "method only" approach, which is what I believe Common Core does (learn the method, don't worry so much about the answer), is ridiculous. Think about how that would work for most people in their jobs. Think about a doctor who is performing a surgery or airline pilot attempting to land a 747, or even about store clerk who "isn't sure how to make change for that $20 but they are "pretty sure they understand the approach". That is ludicrous. Analysis is essential, but you shouldn't be so dismissive of pure memorization, or being able to come up with the correct answer. I am sure we could probably improve on the current teaching-learning methodology, but I have a sneaking suspicion "common core" is not the answer. To me, it looks like a classic case of people over-thinking something and coming up with the wrong solution. Ah, another example of big government trying to insert their influence into all aspects of our lives. Sorry, but this has clear political overtones.

  • 4/20 4:21pm   Tickets are now available for The Un-Common Theater Company's production of "The Addams Family" being presented at the Orpheum Theatre, Foxboro May 9- 11, 2014. Tickets may be purchased by calling (800) 838-3006 or online at www.brownpapertickets.com/event/619297.
The Un-Common Theatre Company is thrilled to one of the first community theatre companies in the country to perform this newly released Broadway favorite! This production reunites the NETC Moss Hart award winning team (from Un-Common's Secret Garden) of Director Michael La Fleur (Las Vegas, NV) and Music Director Esther Zabinski (Providence, RI). Michael has just completed his tenure as Creative Director for Resorts World Sentosa in Singapore and has created a memorable theatrical experience for both the cast and audience alike.
Performances are Friday, May 9th at 7:30 pm, Saturday, May 10th at 7:30 pm and Sunday, May 11th at 2:00 pm at the Orpheum Theatre, One School Street, Foxboro, MA. Pre-Sale Tickets are $22 for Adults and $17 for Students and Seniors and may be purchased by calling (800) 838-3006 or on line at www.brownpapertickets.com/event/619297. • 4/20 4:20pm   The Un-Common Theatre Co. is thrilled to announce auditions for the Tony Award winning Broadway musical "American Idiot". Un-Common has been chosen as one of the first theatre companies in the country to present this politically-charged rock opera. Auditions will be held on Sunday, May 18th with performances on July 17-20, 2014, at the Orpheum Theatre, Foxboro, MA.
Based on Green Day's Grammy Award-winning multi-platinum album, "American Idiot" chronicles the exhilarating journey of a new generation of young Americans as they struggle to find meaning in a post-9/11 world. Johnny, Will, and Tunny, childhood friends, long to escape their unhappy, media- saturated suburban lives, but pregnancy, drugs and the military keep them from pursuing the lives they are destined to lead.
A critical smash on Broadway and in London, this high-octane show is about the conflict between love and rage - a tale about self-destructive rebellion and the striving to change into a better self in a better world through ethical choices. "American Idiot" weaves a touching story that promises to leave a lasting impression on all who witness it.
Auditions will be held for students currently in Grade 10 through age 21, on Sunday, May 18th, 2014 at 5:00pm by appointment only in Foxboro, MA with call backs on Wednesday, May 21st, 2014 at 6:30pm in Mansfield, MA. If you are physically unable to attend the auditions, please contact us by email for information on presenting a video audition.
Rehearsals will be held on Sunday afternoons, Thursday evenings and one other weeknight evening in Mansfield and Foxboro beginning May 25th. The show will be performed at the Orpheum Theater in Foxboro, MA July 17-20, 2014.
Check the website www.uncommontheatre.org for more information on the roles and for details of what needs to be prepared for an audition then email uncommontheatre@verizon.net for an appointment time or information on a video audition. Please include your name, age, grade or year in college, phone number and email address. We will get back to you with an audition time and more details.

  • 4/20 4:06pm   KP - I have spoken with someone directly involved with Common Core standards - namely Dr. Sandra Stotsky - the only English Language Arts CONTENT expert on the validation committee for the CC standards. Dr. Stotsky has a very long and accomplished resume. Dr. Stotsky refused to sign off on the CC standards. Specifically, she answers the following questions which address why she refused to validate the CC standards: [source pdf - Wm.]
    11. What are the chief deficiencies of Common Core's standards?

    A. The standards are not internationally benchmarked.
    B. The standards are not research-based.
    C. The standards are not rigorous.
They omit high school mathematics standards leading to STEM careers, stress writing over reading, reduce literary study in grades 6-12, use an unproven approach to teaching Euclidean geometry, defer completion of Algebra I to grade 9 or 10, are developmentally inappropriate in the primary grades, and use the high school English class for informational reading instruction.

    15. What are the major flaws in Common Core's English language arts standards?

    A. Most of CC's reading standards are content-free skills.
    B. CC's ELA standards stress writing more than reading at every grade level.
    C. CC's writing standards are developmentally inappropriate at many grade levels and lack coordination with its reading standards.
    D. CC expects English teachers to spend at least half of their reading instructional time at every grade level on informational texts.
    E. CC reduces opportunities for students to develop critical thinking.
    F. CC's standards are not ``fewer, clearer, and deeper;'' they often bundle several objectives into one statement and call it one standard.

The above and more -- including Dr. Stotsky's contributions to independent research papers can be found at the Pioneer Institute website. None of it is ``misinformation''.
Further, if you re-read my post, I do not take issue with having standards. And, I do not take issue with teachers - if you re-read my post, in fact, I am quite complimentary toward the hard work of our teachers and the resulting achievement of our students.
I also never implied that the standards were ``so simple''. I said of lesser quality... meaning CC standards were not well-written, and in fact many people involved in writing the standards have little to no actual classroom or content teaching experience. Further, many of the standards, as Dr. Stotsky points out, are developmentally inappropriate, which, would then make them unnecessarily more difficult for students.
As a parent and a taxpayer, I take issue that our state is scrapping something that works and hundreds of millions were spent in developing.
I take issue that our state adopted the CC standards BEFORE they were even written and without notifying anyone. I take issue that no one on the pro-CC side can point to any research that validates why these standards are more rigorous or research that shows to which countries the CC standards are internationally benchmarked. I take issue that any such ``comparison'' research was conducted and paid for by the very people who helped develop the CC standards and are promoting the CC standards.
I take issue with the accusation of ``playing politics''. Nowhere in my post did I disparage either political party. You have no idea what my politics are. I simply stated it was not the role of the federal government to be involved in education matters. (I did not take to task any particular administration or people. Both political parties are involved). I simply acknowledged Shawn Dooley's attempt to give PARENTS the choice as to whether their children take the pilot of the PARRC test or not. This is not a left/right or Republican/Democrat issue. This is about giving our children the best education possible. Massachusetts had that -- demonstrated by our students consistent performance on the NAEP tests.
Finally, I take issue with the declaration that the debate about CC is over. You make excellent points about the use of assessments, and it is a discussion worth having. I would be interested to know what percentage of kids in MA are failing the tests and falling further behind. Wouldn't it be more reasonable to address that smaller percentage of kids, rather than change the entire system that seems to work for most students in MA? Also, if you have access to independent research that validates CC standards, please share with the community.
Discussions and debates about our children's education should be ongoing and held at the local level. Parents, teachers, school boards and taxpayers are the people who should be involved in leading the discussions and making the decisions about education.

  • 4/20 3:59pm   JD ~ I agree with much of your post about the Common Core State Standards but as a 20 year educator, I feel the need to jump in. I am tired of hearing people who are worried about the child's standards of education being ``dumbed down'' or that the CCSS is ``lowering the bar''. At the elementary level this is so not the case. In fact, I have yet to meet an educator that feels we are lowering the bar ~ It is the complete opposite. The depth of knowledge expected of the CCSS are far more rigorous than what we have been teaching over the past 20 years, not to mention the fact that the state of Massachusetts has additional add-on standards just for our state. Take a look at the PARCC field test www.parcconline.org/samples/mathematics/grade-3-mathematics - No comparison to the MCAS. I'm not even sure this is developmentally appropriate to set as expectations for our children.
Also, your mention of the CCSS omitting standards that will lead to STEM careers, I just spent the past week attending the NSTA conference in Boston translating the NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards) ~ www.nextgenscience.org. Massachusetts has adopted these standards as well - www.doe.mass.edu/stem/standards/NGSS-MAAComparison.html
There is a lot to worry about. However, ``lowering the bar'' is not one I'm concerned about. I too urge parents to do their research.

  • 4/20 3:55pm   AB-G and KP: Please do not make light of the Common Core standards. AB-G, as I recall, you were a teacher - yet you submit this, "Here's the reason for Common Core: The wealthy ruling class will continue to send their kids to exclusive private schools and those kids who attend public schools will turn into - wait for it - the Low Information Voter."
AB-G, so you ARE stating in clear terms that those of us who continue to support public education are allowing our children to become "low information voters", which can only imply that you feel we are doing our children a disservice. PLEASE EXPLAIN!! You are the first to call others out, so turn-about is fair play. If Norfolk kids go to King Philip, are you clearly stating that they are intellectually deficient (Low Information Voters), when compared with kids who attend private schools?
KP: that Kool-Aid that the Common Core folks serve is pretty good.

  • 4/12 9:52pm   Many thanks and enormous respect are given to Todor Stoinov, Director of the Ivy Music Academy of Norfolk. Last week I found myself in immediate need of an expert to put sheet music dating back to 1931, to piano music. This task needed to be done for use at the April 16th lecture at the Norfolk Library, ``Remember When: The Weber Duck Inn''.
I had been fortunate enough to acquire the music, written by Leon Pini who opened and ran the Inn from 1923-1933. I went on line and was not sure that I would have any luck finding someone, somewhere, who would be able to get the music, learn the music, record it and get it to me in less than a week's time. Well, Todor answered my call. The musical project was beautifully and professionally completed and I now have a CD at home here, for practice before the Library talk and at the Talk as well. What is so amazing is the fact that Todor and I were not able to actually meet each other because of our schedules, only speak on the phone. The piano playing is expert; it is delightful and means a great deal to me. I have read Todor's personal musical history and am enormously impressed with his credentials. Thank you, Todor Stoinov, and your wonderful Music Academy of Norfolk. And you were right there, at 175 Main Street in Norfolk. What could be better!

  • 4/12 9:47pm   I concur with JD's recent post about the new school standards. Common Core is not only very bad for our kids. The costs, which have not been estimated yet, will be very high and the town will have to absorb the costs. Which means higher taxes. Please research for yourself about the dangers of this FED led takeover of public control of our schools and children's lives.
Also Rep Shawn Dooley is organizing a forum on May 27th, possibly at the Norfolk Public Library with speakers on both sides of the issue. Please try to attend.
Try reading this book. "The Cult of Common Core" by Brad McQueen. It's only $5.00.
Here is a little history about Brad McQeen.
"A former Common Core insider and current public school teacher, Brad McQueen, delivers a compelling firsthand account of coming face to face with the inner workings of the Common Core. When he discovered what it has in store for our children's minds and our country's exceptionalism, he decided to work towards the destruction of the Common Core beast.

Written in a concise, easy-to-read style, The Cult of Common Core will inform you, alarm you, but it will also arm you with the necessary facts to intelligently and forcefully fight for your children and your country before school boards or arrogant politicians who voted it into your life. Using humor, and plain, mostly acronym-free language, Brad takes you with him to Chicago as he works with the Common Core high command. Brad takes you through a history of the Common Core and identifies all the key players, as well as warns you of the Common Core's true intentions for your child and our education delivery system.

Don't be on the sidelines in the fight for your children's minds and our country's exceptionalism!"

  • 4/12 9:36pm   Norfolk Lions Announce 2014 Chili Fest Winner
On Saturday March 22, 2014, Norfolk Lions held their 7th Annual Chili Fest at St. Jude's Church. This annual event has become a staple in the community, tasting and judging chili from local restaurants.
The 2014 winner was Horse N' Carriage Restaurant! The other participants included the Eagle Brook Saloon, Mr. Dooley's Olde Irish Country Pub, James' Roadside Cafe, Budabings 50s Cafe and Commonwealth BBQ. According to co-chairs Ray Cisneros and Lynn Worley, the competition was very hot with close voting results.
Lion Ray Cisneros presented a plaque to Vinnie Megna, the Executive Chef of the Horse N' Carriage Restaurant, who prepared the winning chili.
The Lions raised $1,000.00 at the Chili Fest, which will be donated to the Norfolk Food Pantry. Thank you to everyone who supported this worthwhile cause!

  • 4/12 9:29pm   JD - You might want to do a bit more research and maybe actually speak with those directly involved before you continue to misinform parents. Massachusetts did indeed adopt the Common Core standards. However they also incorporated a great deal of additional components to make it better. If you'd take a few moments to read the base standard against the MA standard, you'd see that. www.doe.mass.edu/frameworks/current.html Both were written by well respected professors from some of the country's top schools AS WELL AS actual teachers from Massachusetts public schools.
I have a personal friend who actually wrote the new math curriculum for her Town. And yes she's a teacher. And yes she believes it is better than what came before.
In many high schools across America, students will often ask, ``will this be on the test?'' and then they will memorize the bit of information for the test. Typically these students will not know how to analyze the information or use the information in a constructive manner, as they will only memorize the information for the test. The teacher then gives the assessment a grade based on the right or wrong answer and continues on with instruction the next class even if some of her students failed the test, leaving those failing students to fall further and further behind.
Assessment is not currently being used as a golf coach would use it, to try to discern what the student would need to learn next and what they needed to review, in order to make improvements. Assessment is being used to give a grade that would identify students as good or bad learners. This information tends to leave most students with an unpleasant view of assessment. It lacks utility to them as learners; assessments seldom serve to help improve a student's performance.
Standards-based assessments are different. And, I myself as a parent, much prefer to have my child be able to analyze information over memorize information. Here is a link to an example question from the PARCC exam, if you think it is so simple, try solving it yourself. www.parcconline.org/sites/parcc/files/PARCC_SampleItems_Mathematics_HSAlgIIMathIIITemperatureChange_081913_Final_0.pdf
PARCC is currently being piloted in 200 districts in the state, in addition to MCAS. We have finally gotten to the point where teachers will be held accountable for what they do and do not properly teach the students of Massachusets and CC scares the hell out of them. My friend isn't worried and I'm not worried for her. Stop playing politics. It isn't getting the country anywhere. PARCC and Common Core standards aren't going anywhere, so it would be better for all of us if you did some homework.

  • 4/12 9:22pm   BP - You said to "purchase their farm less 5 acres and their house", Will Jayne and Paul be able to develop those 5 acres they keep? Could they open a farm on those 5 acres? I would assume this is just an agreement to buy land then? If I read your post correctly... this land will be sold to a farmer but only after state, federal, and local funds buy it first?? If the land is worth what the fed, state, and local gov't would pay and the wish of Jayne and Paul to see their land used for farming then why not ask Jayne and Paul to put a restriction on the land so that it can only be used for farming and keep us the heck out of it??

  • 4/12 8:12pm   My name is Gerry (Girard) St. Amand and I am running for Town Moderator. The Moderator has three very important tasks; conduct Town Meeting in a manner that allows for a civil discourse of any issue brought before the meeting, appoint Advisory Board members such that a cross section of the Town is represented and all issues are completely reviewed, and appoint the Bylaw Study Committee.
My wife and I have lived in Norfolk since 1978. We raised our five children here, all who have graduated from the Norfolk and the KP school systems. Each holds degrees from Colleges and Universities. I was born in Acushnet, MA, graduated from New Bedford High and received my BS degree from what is known now as UMASS Dartmouth. While I have been retired for the last year, I was previously an Engineer, Engineering Manager and Program Manager with General Dynamics for 35 years.
Starting in 1979 I have served the Town in many capacities; Zoning Board of Appeals, Board of Health, Selectman for 12 years, and 2 years on the Advisory Board. At present I am on the Board of Registrars. My tenure with the Town has made me totally familiar with all aspects of issues that will come before a Town meeting. In addition to the Town activities I have served in many positions in the Lions Club for the last 33 years and currently am on the Board of Directors. For more information about me and why I am running for moderator, please check out my Facebook page at www.facebook.com/GerryForModerator. • 4/5 10:42am   To parents of children in grades K-12: As many of you may already know, Massachusetts has recently adopted the Common Core Curriculum Standards.
These standards replace the former MA State Frameworks, which were developed in the early 90's through a very rigorous and thorough and open process. Children in Massachusetts have performed remarkably well over the years on the NAEP tests -- placing number one in the country for consecutive years. Common Core on the other hand, was privately developed with little to no input from educators, content specialists or parents and was adopted in order to secure a one time grant of 250 million dollars in Race to the Top money. It was developed by the National Governor's Association and the Chief Council of State Schools Superintendents. These are private organizations -- not publicly elected bodies. As such, records of their meetings are unavailable. These private groups were/are funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Education is the responsibility of the parents, teachers, school boards and the state -- not private organizations and certainly not the responsibility of the Federal Government to coerce states into adopting untested standards in exchange for one-time stimulus funds.
I urge all parents in Norfolk to do their research on Common Core. The standards are of lesser quality than MA's previous standards. They reduce the study of classic literature and they "omit high school mathematics standards leading to STEM careers". (STEM -- Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.) Further, one of the writers of the standards admitted in testimony to the MA department of education that the standards are suitable for acceptance into non-selective colleges. Further, the standards are copyrighted, which means they cannot be changed, added to etc. they must be followed, exactly as written by our teachers, who had no say in their development.
Many states in the country are now revisiting their hasty adoption of these standards (which by the way, the states agreed to the adoption before the standards were completely written). Indiana and Oklahoma have recently dropped out of Common Core.
The SAT is now being revised to align with Common Core. The vocabulary portion of the test will now have "easier" words. The president of the College Board was a lead developer of the CC standards.
I am no expert in curriculum standards, but the past performance of our students on these national tests says something about the standards we are scrapping, that we have years of data on, that millions were spent in developing -- openly and in partnership with all stakeholders -- in favor of one-size fits all standards, developed in private, adopted without notice and its implementation is completely unfunded -- ie. new textbooks, technology, teacher training etc..
Finally, a word to Catholic school parents -- you are not immune. The Archdiocese of Boston has adopted, or "aligned" as they like to say, to these standards, even though they did not have to because they do not take federal funds.
I strongly encourage you to attend a Common Core forum if you see one advertised featuring Jamie Gass and Sandra Stotsky. Or, visit the Pioneer Institute website for more information on their research of the CC standards. Or, if you have 40 minutes to spare, you can watch a film on the history behind CC and a discussion of its deficiencies with the math and ELA content experts who sat on the validation committee of CC and refused to sign off on the standards. www.commoncoremovie.com.
I applaud Shawn Dooley for taking action and allowing parents in Norfolk to opt out their children of the pilot testing of the new, nationalized PAARC test -- which is to replace MCAS, and which will be based on the new CC standards.
Please do your research!! As a parent, I aspire to see my kids get into a selective university. I desire to see them have as robust an education experience as possible -- with teachers free to be creative in what and how they teach. Common core takes away that freedom from teachers, parents, and most important -- our students.
Standards are appropriate -- but make them HIGH standards developed by people in Massachusetts for the kids of Massachusetts. It is in the striving that we all achieve. Massachusetts students' past performance is proof of that! Lowering the bar across the nation serves no one well and it is certainly a disservice to our Massachusetts students and teachers who have worked so hard to achieve such great results.
    Thank you.

  • 4/5 10:10am   An agreement has been reached for a set price between Jane and Paul Newton and the Trust for Public Land a nationwide conservation agency, to purchase their farm excluding five acres and their house, which they will keep. A public meeting will be held at the Library May 1 at 7:30. Chris LaPointe from the Trust for Public Land will discuss all the details of the project and what this will mean to the citizens of Norfolk.
Because part of the purchase price will include Norfolk taxpayer funds from the Community Preservation Fund, a vote will be required at town meeting for the purchase to take place. The vote will be to purchase the development rights for all 70 acres of the farm purchased. Community Preservation funds have already been alocated, and are part of the preservation funds set aside over the past several years for this purpose. The total purchase price will be comprised of CPA funds, State and Federal funds and the purchase price that a farmer will pay. The sale of the land to the farmer will be arranged by the Trust for Public Lands. If the vote passes at town meeting the farm will be preserved as a farm forever. Please plan to attend the meeting at the library May 1st so that you can make an informed vote on May 13.
ATTEND TOWN MEETING MAY 13 7:00 TO LET YOUR VOICE BE HEARD ON THE PRESERVATION OF JANE AND PAUL'S FARM.

  • 4/5 9:46am   BF (2) - there have been past and present posts from "town residents" that have sounded like MON's. Your last line and JAB's post of 3/31. One could argue that since MON was a resident of Norfolk once he could fall into the "just to let us know you visited" guideline. I just find it funny that it's okay for present residents to write negatively about Norfolk or other people but no one else. I for one like to read MON's comments; it gives me something to chuckle about. I may not always agree with him but he does make me laugh!

  • 4/5 9:43am   Hello, my name is Glenn Hill, and I am running for election to the Board of Library Trustees. I would like to explain what a Library Trustee does and why you should consider voting for me on May 6th.
The primary role of a Library Trustee is to lend governance to the operation and maintenance of your Library, which is a center for educational, informational and recreational access to all categories of media and learning experiences. Secondary roles include working with the Library Director in maintaining, preparing and presenting the annual budget at Town Meeting, informing the Library Strategic Plan, and advocating for Library interests.
The Trustees are a team of three volunteers, where the unique talents, skills and experiences of each individual Trustee blends seamlessly to form an efficient and effective Board. Such is the composition of your Board of Library Trustees today. Together with fellow Trustees and the participation of the Library Director, the Trustees are reaching strategic goals at every meeting. Since my appointment in 2013, the Trustees have accomplished major goals that include:
    - Review and update of existing Policies and Procedures.
    - Creation of new Safety and Security Policy and Incident Response Procedures.
    - Published a document describing the Board of Trustees and their function.
    - Adopted a ``Contact Us'' link on the Library website to enable electronic inquiries.
    - Collaborate with Friends of the Library in support of their activities.
While my experience and efforts have contributed to these accomplishments, none of what has been accomplished could have been completed without the close cooperation and collaboration with my fellow Trustees and the Library Director. It is this team that works together to help deliver on the promise of having a well-managed, accessible Library that is welcome to all, and prepared for the future.
I have lived in Norfolk since 1995. My background includes 35 years in information security, protection of persons and property, and budget management. I am retired from Northeastern University, where I spent 10 years as the Director of Information Security and Identity Services, and as a graduate lecturer, teaching Information Protection and Risk Management. Before coming to Northeastern, I was the Director of Network and Telecommunications Services at Babson College.
I have served our community in several roles. In 2004, I participated on the Norfolk Public Schools Safety and Security Committee, where a set of recommendations was developed to help protect students and staff in their learning environment. In 2005, I was a member of the Library Strategic Planning Committee, whose charter was to inform the Strategic Plan that helps qualify the Library for state certification and grants. I give an annual presentation at the Library on Identity Theft and Internet Safety, and I support the Friends of the Library and regularly attend their meetings.
If elected, I will continue to help assure the Library has the guidance, policies and advocacy needed to preserve and enhance it's long legacy of service to the community, while at the same time, preparing for the future. I plan to attend Meet the Candidates Night, and look forward this opportunity. Thank you for your time, and for your consideration at Town Election on May 6th.
    Respectfully,
    - Glenn Hill Member, Board of Library Trustees

  • 4/5 9:37am   Wm: The decision is yours, obviously (as the person kind enough to host this site) - but why are MON's annoying shots at our town still being posted? It would seem that MON has long since left the town (score one for us), and that it has been quite a while now, so enough of the foolishness. Enough MON already, his humor has passed the expiration date.
