  • 3/29 9:34pm   Are you looking for a babysitter? I am 16, an honors student and junior at King Philip HS, and have babysitting and child volunteer experience. I have also taken a 4H babysitting course. I love kids, and have always been told by my elders that I make a creative, compassionate, and mature role model. I could work on weekends and occasional weeknights. If interested, email me at elizabethc0598@gmail.com or text me @ 508-215-7616. Thanks!

  • 3/29 9:33pm   Need a flute teacher? I am currently a junior at King Philip High School, and participate in the symphony band and the marching band. I have a passion for music and intend to persue it as a minor in college in the future. I have been playing flute for almost 9 years. I love kids and have plenty of experience working with them, and ideally would provide lessons for anyone in their eighth grade year or below, or any age if help or guidance was needed. If interested, email me at elizabethc0598@gmail.com. Thanks!

  • 3/29 9:30pm   Norfolk Lions Announce 2015 Chili Fest Winner
On Saturday March 14, 2015, Norfolk Lions held their 8th Annual Chili Fest at St. Jude's Church. This annual event has become a staple in the community, tasting and judging chili from local restaurants.
The 2015 winner was the Horse N' Carriage Restaurant! The other participants included the Eagle Brook Saloon, Mr. Dooley's Olde Irish Country Pub, James' Roadside Cafe, Commonwealth BBQ and Novatos Bar & Grill.
According to Chairperson Lynn Worley, the competition was very hot with close voting results.
Lion Lynn Worley presented a plaque to Vinnie Megna, the Executive Chef of the Horse N' Carriage Restaurant, who prepared the winning chili. This is a repeat win for Vinnie and the Horse `N Carriage who won last year's Chili Fest as well.
The proceeds from the Chili Fest allowed the Lions to make a $1,000.00 donation to the Norfolk Food Pantry. Thank you to everyone who supported this worthwhile cause!

  • 3/29 9:28pm   Norfolk Lions Honor Veterans with "Field of Flags" on Town Hill
The Norfolk Lions Club is raising money to honor our veterans by selling 12" x 18" American flags. They will be placed in a grid on Town Hill for viewing from April 17 through May 31. A formal "Salute to the Flags" will be held on Saturday, May 23 at 10:00 AM to honor those brave men and women who have served in the armed forces. We also encourage you to visit the "Field of Flags" after the Town Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday, May 25.
Norfolk residents will receive a package in the mail from the Norfolk Lions requesting support for a "Field of Flags" on Town Hill. Residents of surrounding towns are also welcome to participate in this tribute to our veterans. The flags cost $10.00 each and may be dedicated to the memory of or the honor of a veteran. Donor's names and dedications will be on display at the Norfolk Public Library. What an inspirational sight - 1000 flags on Town Hill - proudly commemorating our veterans!
The net proceeds from this "Field of Flags" will be donated to The Fisher House Boston, a non-profit charity that provides a home away from home for families of veterans who are receiving treatment at the VA Boston Healthcare System in West Roxbury. There is no charge for any family to stay at The Fisher House.
The Lions ask the community of Norfolk and surrounding towns to rally around this commemorative in support of the men and women who have sacrificed so much, by buying a flag. Please return the remittance envelope you received in the mail or you may send a check with your name and dedication to Norfolk Lions Club/Fisher House, PO BOX 608, Norfolk MA 02056. For further information, please call Lion Don H. at 508-520-0225 or Jen D. from the Fisher House Boston at 508-728-8781.

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts The State Reclamation and Mosquito Control Board Norfolk County Mosquito Control District www.NorfolkCountyMosquito.org

    To: Boards of Health
    From: David A. Lawson, Director
    Date: March 26, 2015
    Re: Aerial Larval Control Application

Please be advised that the Norfolk County Mosquito Control District will be conducting aerial larval control helicopter applications for 2 to 4 days; some time between April 13 and April 24, 2015 . These applications are not sprays, but instead are granular applications of a biological larvicide applied to wetlands only. As always, the weather in the spring is unpredictable, and for this reason the District cannot pin down these dates with any more accuracy at this time. As the time approaches, the District will narrow down application dates, and will notify you via e-mail, fax or phone. Please inform your Fire and Police Departments of this scheduled application. The District will contact, each morning, those public safety departments in whose towns the application will be taking place. We receive very few complaints from residents regarding these applications. Many residents who live near the wetlands we treat are familiar with the application. Nevertheless a general notification to the public is appropriate (Town Website, local newspapers, cable, and message boards). Thank you for your assistance.

  • 3/29 8:17pm   All Norfolk Parents, I have one question to ask, do you really have 100% confidence in your KP school district and how it treats your kids? Are they getting the education you are paying for? Would you like to? I am writing today to tell you about an extraordinary individual that lives in Norfolk, and who is currently running for school committee and who deserves your vote for this important position.
Patrick Touhey is a man of strong character, a Patriot who understands much about politics, local and otherwise, and who has dedicated his personal time and efforts to a variety of town offices and who is now running for the KP school district Board position.
A vote for Patrick would mean that information will be forthcoming and transparent, that the Board would continue to make positive changes for the sake of the children, and that organization and management of the schools would be as progressive as it has to be.
So please Vote for Patrick Touhey- your children deserve it.

  • 3/29 7:56pm   Do you currently use daycare or a nanny for you childcare needs? These options can be quite expensive. I'd like to tell you about an affordable, flexible alternative - hosting an Au Pair. My organization, Cultural Care Au Pair, Cambridge, MA, facilitates young adults (18-26 year olds) from different parts of the world (Europe, South America and parts of Asia) to come to the US and live with a host family for a year. They provide childcare for up to 45 flexible hours per week and also must take 6 college credits during their year here. The Au Pair Program is regulated by the US Department of State and is a wonderful childcare / cultural exchange! I'd love to share more information about the program with you and help you find the perfect au pair who would fit in with you family and fulfill you childcare needs. Currently I am servicing 4 Norfolk, MA families and over 20 others in local adjacent communities. Please contact Michelle Gray for more information at: 774-406-6921, michelle.gray@lcc.culturalcare.com or visit my website at mgray.aupairnews.com

  • 3/29 7:52pm   RC and BF: Spectra told us the new pipeline will run along the existing right-of-way for the Algonquin gas pipeline. The right of way is the same area through which the NSTAR (now Eversource) high-tension wires run in town. As for the "open house", there were roughly 25 Spectra representatives standing at tables and alongside aerial photos, explaining the project and their point of view as to why it is good.
Representatives from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission were also in attendance, to explain where in the application process Spectra now is positioned.
    - GH

  • 3/29 7:49pm   RE Spectra Energy was at the Town Library. And this is what I learned. The new 24 inch diameter pipe has 1 inch thick walls. Is always buried at least 3 ft. below the surface. It will mostly be under or adjacent to the power lines. Also follow the old rail bed. Spectra owns the pipe and not the gas. They make money by letting gas suppliers use their pipe. They will drill at an angle under the Charles River and the send the pipe through, never disturbing the river. The old existing small gas pipe was installed in 1966. It is said to be in good shape and should continue being in service 30 years or more. New pipe project should start in 2017, completed in 10 months.
I'm glad to see the investment being made to help the supply of energy flowing smoothly.

  • 3/22 12:27pm   KD, thanks for the heads up about Spectra's library meeting. It's great that more energy choices are being made available to oil. The collective benefit of the disruptive technology has been helping all of our residents this cold heating season. Will there be a separate pipe for the "fracked" gas or does it just transport through some political conduit?
Thank god for the utility rate break this year - yet it barely offsets the $17.66 tax rate - this is much more damaging to Norfolk than fracking ever will be!
    - PC

  • 3/22 11:43am   KD: In the spirit of full disclosure ~ I don't work for Spectra, I don't even have natural gas at my home in Norfolk. But your post is lacking. The the new line that Spectra is installing is in addition to an existing line that is already in place and has been there for over 30 years. I really don't think you can say that any of this gas is fracked ~ (a bit misleading). If you haven't noticed that your electric bill has gone up ~ any idea why?. The overall demand for natural gas by consumers (most of our electricity is produced from natural gas) has taxed the infrastructure. There isn't a natural gas shortage, the system can't deliver the amount that is needed to met the demands. So unless you are willing to conserve energy...

  • 3/13 9:53pm   Spectra Energy is holding an Open House at the Norfolk Library on Tuesday, March 17th from 5:30-7:30 pm. They plan to put a 24 inch pipeline of fracked natural gas from New York to Hingham, passing through Norfolk. This has generated opposition in several towns in Massachusetts. Residents may want to come out to this and see where the pipeline will be placed in Norfolk and what safety concerns may arise.

  • 3/13 9:26pm   To LD regarding why Healthy Pet Supply has been closed so often in the last few weeks, we have also heard this concern from others and would like to pass along some information to all our customers.
As you know in this extreme winter weather, we were asked to stay off the roads multiple times by state and town officials. My plow broke down with a transmission problem after the January storm, and there were multiple times after that when we could not even get out of our own 130 yard driveway, until someone else could plow us out and this got fairly expensive. One time the snow was so heavy that the plow truck that came to our rescue, also got stuck halfway up our driveway and we had to help dig him out so he could back up, but came back with a different vehicle to finish the job.
Add to this that I have health issues including extremely painful gout, and a very cranky back that gets severely aggravated by snow shoveling. Due to our dead plow issue, I ended up having to shovel by hand more then any other time in memory. This has been the Winter From Hell but hopefully we can now get back to our normal work schedule, which is Monday and Friday 10am to 6pm, Tues-Weds-Thurs from 9:30am to 7pm, and Saturday 10am to 2pm. Call ahead to check that we are open, the store number is 508-541-7387.
We also had some problems with deliveries, receiving products from our suppliers, and heating issues at the store. We had to deal with roof snow removal and ice dams at home. Our mailbox was hit and taken down so we have been receiving our personal mail at the store since, please be sure to thank our post office workers for their hard work in dealing with all these problems.
We apologize for any inconvenience but hope you will understand how difficult it has been. Please continue to support our store because we barely make enough to pay the bills never mind profit, and cannot survive without our customers.
Thank you for reading, stop by anytime and we will try to work with you to accommodate your pet needs.

  • 3/5 7:57pm   Norfolk Lions Community Day is June 6, 2015
Save the date! June may seem like a long way off, but the Norfolk Lions Community Day team is already planning this annual event.
This year's event resurrects the original ``Old Tyme Day'' theme from years past when times were a little slower and more affordable. Community Day 2015 will take place on Saturday, June 6, 2015 from 11:00 until 4:00. Once again the Holmes Family has graciously agreed to host the event at their property at 22 Myrtle Street, Norfolk.
This will be the Lions' 23rd year bringing a day of family fun and entertainment. The Lions' goal is to provide a country fair type environment including music, dancing, games, petting animals, hayrides, train rides, pie eating contest, foam for kids to play in, food and historical displays. This is an event for the entire Norfolk Community to come out, celebrate and get to know neighbors.
The Lions welcome your participation and invite any Norfolk business, organization, neighborhood or group to participate in Community Day. Groups and organizations (including corporations) can take part in a number of ways, whether by setting up a booth or tent, sponsoring an activity or entertainment, or simply by becoming a sponsor.
There is no set fee to participate, but we do ask that you provide something in return. For example, if your company wants to have a booth, then you should have something to offer that will add to the fun such as a game or activity, or provide financial support that will be used towards other expenses. You can also sponsor an event or entertainment. We are flexible; just tell us what you have in mind.
Help make Norfolk Community Day 2015 one of the best and join the fun. You may contact the Norfolk Lions Club at norfolkcommunityday@gmail.com or call Patti M. @ 508-520-0540 or Frank Z. @ 508-520-0203.

    • 3/1 2:00am   Hi readers of Norfolknet... With all the talk of ice dams, snow rakes and the hiring of person's to clear off roofs and to handle the destruction of ice dams, I am providing a few images of what a properly snow raked roof and ice dam breaking should look like. A lot of guys are clearing roofs then applying large amounts of salt and other ice melt chemicals which may or may not work but, what definitely does work is to cut channels through the ice at the gutter line every 3 ~ 4 feet as shown. The channels cut have been created very carefully using a hatchet... If one is careful, the roof shingles and gutter are not damaged.
      Hope this information proves helpful.

    • 3/1 1:59am   The PC Handyman is pleased to announce:
      ``Computer Safety'' class ~ Thursday March 26, 7:00 PM
The threat to your privacy and security that comes with your use of your computer and the internet worsens every day. Malware like the Conficker worm gained national recognition, and people are becoming more and more aware of the increasing risks that online activity poses, although they don't fully understand them. But, we need our computers, so we need to be aware of what's going onout there, and we need to stay protected.
Virus writing used to be a competitive thing--the most widespread viruses gained attention and bragging rights for the developer. Today, things are different--it's now all about taking your money or stealing your personal information or even your identity.
So, I have developed a seminar designed to teach you about the various threats that you and your children may encounter through the use of your computer, and how to protect yourself and your PC from them. Some topics to be included:
-Downloading ``free'' software, music, and games--the risks to your computer and privacy
      -Updates ~ should I or shouldn't I?
      -Protecting your personal information
-Phishing--what it is and how it can hurt you
      -Online shopping--is it safe?
-The dangers of social networking sites and how to use them safely
-Virus protection and other security software--how much do you need, and which are the good ones?
-Malware (viruses, worms, Trojans, spyware, etc.) - what's out there, how do you get infected, and how do you get rid of it
      And much more.
When: Thursday March 26, at 7:00 PM. About 1 1/2 hours, unless we need to go longer.
Location: First Universalist Church, 262 Chestnut St., Franklin. Plenty of parking.
Cost: $30 - prepayment requested because I have to commit to the rental space
      To register: Call 508 346 3502 or email: info@pchman.com
If you would be interested in other computer courses, I'd like to know that too.

    • 3/1 1:54am   Our two year old black lab, Porter, needs a loving home. Our 7 month old daughter is allergic to Porter and although we have tried to make it work we are left realizing we cannot continue to care for him. Porter is fully house trained, knows basic commands, and is up-to-date with all shots. He is an amazing family dog and wonderful with kids(we also have a 3 and 7 year old). This is one of the hardest things we have had to do, therefore we would want to meet you and make sure you are the right owner for Porter. Please email me at cleonida@bu.edu with the subject line ``Porter."

    • 2/10 9:28pm   I'm thinking about developing a seminar designed to teach you about the various threats that you and your children may encounter through the use of your computer, and how to protect yourself and your PC from them. Some topics to be included:
      - Downloading ``free'' software, music, and games--the risks to your computer and privacy
      - Protecting your personal information
      - Phishing--what it is and how it can hurt you
      - Online shopping--is it safe?
      - The dangers of social networking sites (Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, etc.) and how to use them safely
      - Virus protection and other security software--how much do you need, and which are the good ones?
      - Malware (viruses, worms, Trojans, spyware, etc.) - what's out there, how do you get infected, and how do you get rid of it
      And much more.
I'm looking to see if there's any interest in a class like this. It would likely run 1 to 1 1/2 hours, and cost around 30 dollars. It would be held at a local hall most likely on a weekday evening. Additional classes may follow.
If you would be interested in a course like this, please email info@pchman.com and let me know. If you would be interested in other computer courses, I'd like to know that too.

    • 2/5 10:50am   There is a lot of junk mail being sent to addresses that have appared on Norfolknet, so I've turned off all box###@norfolknet relays. It's hitting all the norfolknet.com post-to addresses, too. Turning off the realays won't help those being spammed directly because they've already harvested the addresses from the pages. The emails are coming from machines all over the world, so I suspect they've been infected by a virus that turns them into spammer bots. The "From" senders are just as much a victim as the recipients.
Needless to say this is all very frustrating, and I apologize to everyone. One more nail in the coffin of email, I guess.

    • 1/19 9:12pm   For JPB: Right you are, all lives matter. Some of your post was missing (as was part of mine re our blue state), but I wanted to mention that the group for whom black lives matter LEAST is apparently African Americans, as 93% of black deaths from murder are at the hands of other blacks according to the DOJ in 2007, which was the first statistic I found. The 8th cause of death among black Americans is from homicide according to the CDC (I did not continue wading through the many pages to get the dates or other details), if they can be believed.

    • 1/19 9:05pm   I read in the newspaper that the Norfolk Town Chief Assessor left his position with the town at the first of this year. While I have not seen the vacant position advertised in a newspaper, it has been posted under the tab ``Job Opportunities'' on the Norfolk Town Hall website. The posting does not contain the date of the posting or a deadline for applying. It would be helpful to potential applicants, if the town Administrator would furnish further information on the Chief Assessors position along with a posting on the ``The Norfolk Net''. Thank you for your consideration.

    • 1/19 8:57pm   Is your dog bored at home? Leashrly Life has the solution. Let us take your pet out for a hiking excursion!
The benefits of hiking with your dog are immeasurable. Hiking can be great therapy for a dog that is exhibiting boredom-based behavior at home such as shoe, rug or furniture chewing, lawn digging, or gratuitous barking. Hiking is a great way to get rid of this boredom!! If your dog is sleeping all day, a hike might just be the activity needed to perk him up and run off pent up energy.
Even the toughest four-legged couch potato loves to get outside for much needed exercise. Dogs love variety ~ new scents to smell and investigate; rolling hills to race up and down; and grass, dirt or mulch to walk on instead of cement (especially now that the colder months can take a toll on their little paws). Just like us, dogs need stimulation and a little excitement. A hike for your dog will give him a mini vacation from his daily routine.
When you get home, you'll notice the sparkle in his eyes after he returns from a place with lots of interesting sights, smells and things to do. He will love you even more for it!! Remember, a tired dog is a good dog -- and hiking is great exercise for pets! Call us today to schedule your pet's hike at 781-241-2083 or email lisa@leashrlylife.com. Please leave us your phone number if you email us. You can also visit us online at www.leashrlylife.com.

If you haven't done research on Common Core and PARCC, I urge you to look into the creation and subservient problems it is creating nationwide [Washington Post article here]

    • 1/2 5:38pm   My wife's sister who resides in Arizona told us about a practice in their area to show support for law enforcement in this trying time of protests and general demonization of all the police. People are putting a candle with a Blue Bulb in their window. They intend on displaying this lit candle throughout the year to show support for, not only their local police, but for all law enforcement personnel in the country. We think this is an excellent idea. My blue candle is lit and will remain lit to show my support. Norfolk residents please get behind this and spread the word.
